Let $ω$ be a continuous weight on $\mathbb R^+$ and let $L^1(ω)$ be the corresponding convolution algebra. By results of Grønbæk and Bade & Dales the continuous derivations from $L^1(ω)$ to its dual space $L^{\infty}(1/ω)$ are exactly the maps of the form $$(D_ϕf)(t)=\int_0^{\infty}f(s)\,\frac{s}{t+s}\,ϕ(t+s)\,ds\qquad\text{($t\in\mathbb R^+$ and $f\in L^1(ω)$)}$$ for some $ϕ\in L^{\infty}(1/ω)$. Also, every $D_ϕ$ has a unique extension to a continuous derivation $\bar{D}_ϕ:M(ω)\to L^{\infty}(1/ω)$ from the corresponding measure algebra. We show that a certain condition on $ϕ$ implies that $\bar{D}_ϕ$ is weak-star continuous. The condition holds for instance if $ϕ\in L_0^{\infty}(1/ω)$. We also provide examples of functions $ϕ$ for which $\bar{D}_ϕ$ is not weak-star continuous. Similarly, we show that $D_ϕ$ and $\bar{D}_ϕ$ are compact under certain conditions on $ϕ$. For instance this holds if $ϕ\in C_0(1/ω)$ with $ϕ(0)=0$. Finally, we give various examples of functions $ϕ$ for which $D_ϕ$ and $\bar{D}_ϕ$ are not compact.
The main purpose of this paper is to treat semigroups properties, like norm continuity, compactness and differentiability for perturbed semigroups in Banach spaces. In particular, we investigate three large classes of perturbations, Miyadera-Voigt, Desch-Schappacher and Staffans-Weiss perturbations. Our approach is mainly based on feedback theory of Salamon-Weiss systems. Our results are applied to abstract boundary integro-differential equations in Banach spaces.
Let a:[0,1] -> R be a Lebesgue-almost everywhere positive function. We consider the Riemann-Liouville operator R^a of variable order a(.) as an operator from L_p[0,1] to L_q[0,1]. Our first aim is to study its continuity properties. For example, we show that R^a is always continuous in L_p[0,1] if p>1. Surprisingly, this becomes false for p=1. In order R^a to be continuous in L_1[0,1], the function a(.) has to satisfy some additional assumptions. In the second, central part of this paper we investigate compactness properties of R^a. We characterize functions a(.) for which R^a is a compact ope…
We deduce continuity, compactness and invariance properties for quasi-Banach Orlicz modulation spaces. We characterize such spaces in terms of Gabor expansions and by their images under the Bargmann transform.
We list multiplier and convolutor spaces of the spaces occurring in L. Schwartz' "Théorie des distributions". Furthermore we clarify whether the multiplications and convolutions are continuous or not.
Let $μ$ be a compactly supported probability measure on the positive half-line and let $μ^{\boxtimes t}$ be the free multiplicative convolution semigroup. We show that the support of $μ^{\boxtimes t}$ varies continuously as $t$ changes. We also obtain the asymptotic length of the support of these measures.
The dual space of the C*-algebra of bounded uniformly continuous functions on a uniform space carries several natural topologies. One of these is the topology of uniform convergence on bounded uniformly equicontinuous sets, or the UEB topology for short. In the particular case of a topological group and its right uniformity, the UEB topology plays a significant role in the continuity of convolution. In this paper we derive a useful characterisation of bounded uniformly equicontinuous sets on locally compact groups. Then we demonstrate that for every locally compact group G the UEB topology on …
The Pseudo-Differential Operator (p.d.o.) $h_{μ,a}$ associated with the Bessel Operator involving the symbol $a(x,y)$ whose derivatives satisfy certain growth conditions depending on some increasing sequences is studied on certain Gevrey spaces. The p.d.o. $h_{μ,a}$ on Hankel translation $τ$ and Hankel convolution of Gevrey functions is continuous linear map into another Gevrey spaces.
Using concentration-compactness arguments we prove a variant of the Brezis-Lieb-Lemma under weaker assumptions on the nonlinearity than known before. An intermediate result on the uniform continuity of superposition operators in Sobolev space is of independent interest.
The s-th forward difference sequence that tends to zero, inspired by the consecutive terms of a sequence approaching zero, is examined in this study. Functions that take sequences satisfying this condition to sequences satisfying the same condition are called s-ward continuous. Inclusion theorems that are related to this kind of uniform continuity and continuity are also considered. Additionally, the concept of $s$-ward compactness of a subset of $X$ via $s$-quasi-Cauchy sequences are investigated. One finds out that the uniform limit of any sequence of $s$-ward continuous function is $s$-ward…
For $l$-homogeneous linear differential operators $\mathcal{A}$ of constant rank, we study the implication $v_j\rightharpoonup v$ in $X$ and $\mathcal{A} v_j\rightarrow \mathcal{A} v$ in $W^{-l}Y$ implies $F(v_j)\rightsquigarrow F(v)$ in $Z$, where $F$ is an $\mathcal{A}$-quasiaffine function and $\rightsquigarrow$ denotes an appropriate type of weak convergence. Here $Z$ is a local $L^1$-type space, either the space $\mathscr{M}$ of measures, or $L^1$, or the Hardy space $\mathscr{H}^1$; $X,\, Y$ are $L^p$-type spaces, by which we mean Lebesgue or Zygmund spaces. Our conditions for each choic…
If G is a Lie group, let D(G) be the space of compactly supported smooth functions on G. Consider the bilinear map B : D(G) x D(G) -> D(G), (f,g) |-> f*g which takes a pair of test functions to their convolution. We show that B is continuous if and only if G is sigma-compact. More generally, let r,s,t be non-negative integers (or infinity) with t <= r+s. Let E_1, E_2 be locally convex spaces and b : E_1 x E_2 -> F be a continuous bilinear map to a complete locally convex space F. The main result is a characterization of those (G,r,s,t,b) for which the convolution map C^r_c(G,E_1) x C^s_c(G,E_2…
Separately continuous bihomomorphisms on a product of convergence or topological groups occur with great frequency. Of course, in general, these need not be jointly continuous. In this paper, we exhibit some results of Banach-Steinhaus type and use these to derive joint continuity from separate continuity. The setting of convergence groups offers two advantages. First, the continuous convergence structure is a powerful tool in many duality arguments. Second, local compactness and first countability, the usual requirements for joint continuity, are available in much greater abundance for conver…
Let the measure algebra of a topological group be equipped with the topology of uniform convergence on bounded right uniformly equicontinuous sets of functions. Convolution is separately continuous on the measure algebra, and it is jointly continuous if and only if the group has the SIN property.
For a locally compact group G, the convolution product on the space N(L^p(G)) of nuclear operators was defined by Neufang. We study homological properties of the convolution algebra N(L^p(G)) and relate them with some properties of the group G, such as compactness, finiteness, discreteness, and amenability.
We consider the compactness of derivations from commutative Banach algebras into their dual modules. We show that if there are no compact derivations from a commutative Banach algebra, $A$, into its dual module, then there are no compact derivations from $A$ into any symmetric $A$-bimodule; we also prove analogous results for weakly compact derivations and for bounded derivations of finite rank. We then characterise the compact derivations from the convolution algebra $\ell^1(\Z_+)$ to its dual. Finally, we give an example (due to J. F. Feinstein) of a non-compact, bounded derivation from a un…
Let $G$ be a compact Lie group of Lie type $B_{n},$ such as $SO(2n+1)$. We characterize the tuples\ $(x_{1},...,x_{L})$ of the elements $x_{j}\in G$ which have the property that the product of their conjugacy classes has non-empty interior. Equivalently, the convolution product of the orbital measures supported on their conjugacy classes is absolutely continuous with respect to Haar measure. The characterization depends on the dimensions of the largest eigenspaces of each $x_{j}$. Such a characterization was previously only known for the compact Lie groups of type $A_{n}$.
We discuss continuity of the twisted convolution on (weighted) Fourier modulation spaces. We use these results to establish continuity results for the twisted convolution on Lebesgue spaces. For example we prove that if $ω$ is an appropriate weight and $1\le p\le 2$, then $L^p_{(ω)}$ is an algebra under the twisted convolution.
A method of proving local continuity of concave functions on convex set possessing the $μ$-compactness property is presented. This method is based on a special approximation of these functions. The class of $μ$-compact sets can be considered as a natural extension of the class of compact metrizable subsets of locally convex spaces, to which particular results well known for compact sets can be generalized. Applications of the obtained continuity conditions to analysis of different entropic characteristics of quantum systems and channels are considered.
Recently, a concept of forward continuity and a concept of forward compactness are introduced in the senses that a function $f$ is forward continuous if $\lim_{n\to\infty} Δf(x_{n})=0$ whenever $\lim_{n\to\infty} Δx_{n}=0$,\; and a subset $E$ of $\textbf{R}$ is forward compact if any sequence $\textbf{x}=(x_{n})$ of points in $E$ has a subsequence $\textbf{z}=(z_{k})=(x_{n_{k}})$ of the sequence $\textbf{x}$ such that $\lim_{k\to \infty} Δz_{k}=0$ where $Δz_{k}=z_{k+1}-z_{k}$. These concepts suggest us to introduce a concept of second forward continuity in the sense that a function $f$ is seco…
Continuity, compactness, the spectrum and ergodic properties of the differentiation operator are investigated, when it acts in the Fréchet space of all Dirichlet series that are uniformly convergent in all half-planes $\{s \in \mathbb{C} \ | \ {\rm Re} s > \varepsilon \}$ for each $\varepsilon>0$. The properties of the formal inverse of the differentiation are also investigated.
For an almost radial and typical weight $v$, we characterize the continuity and compactness of the weighted composition operator $u C_φ$ acting on the weighted Banach spaces of analytic functions $H_{v}^{\infty}$ in terms of the $n$th power of the symbol $φ$, where $u: \mathbb{D} \to \mathbb{C}$ is an analytic function and $φ: \mathbb{D} \to \mathbb{D}$ is analytic. More precisely, we extend the results of Hyvärinen, Kemppainen, Lindström, Rautio and Saukko relating to the continuity and essential norm calculus of the operator $u C_φ$.
Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a compact, simple Lie algebra of dimension $d$. It is a classical result that the convolution of any $d$ non-trivial, $G$ -invariant, orbital measures is absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure on $\mathfrak{g}$ and the sum of any $d$ non-trivial orbits has non-empty interior. The number $d$ was later reduced to the rank of the Lie algebra (or rank $+1$ in the case of type $A_{n}$). More recently, the minimal integer $k=k(X)$ such that the $k$-fold convolution of the orbital measure supported on the orbit generated by $X$ is an absolutely continuous measure…
We make progress on a problem of R. Coifman, P.-L. Lions, Y. Meyer, and S. Semmes from 1993 by showing that the Jacobian operator $J$ does not map $W^{1,n}(\mathbb R^n,\mathbb R^n)$ onto the Hardy space $\mathcal{H}^1(\mathbb R^n)$ for any $n \ge 2$. The related question about surjectivity of $J \colon \dot{W}^{1,n}(\mathbb R^n,\mathbb R^n) \to \mathcal{H}^1(\mathbb R^n)$ is still open. The second main result and its variants reduce the proof of $\mathcal{H}^1$ regularity of a large class of compensated compactness quantities to an integration by parts or easy arithmetic, and applications are …
We consider modulation space and spaces of Schatten-von Neumann symbols where corresponding pseudo-differential operators map one Hilbert space to another. We prove Hölder-Young and Young type results for such spaces under dilated convolutions and multiplications. We also prove continuity properties for such spaces under the twisted convolution, and the Weyl product. These results lead to continuity properties for twisted convolutions on Lebesgue spaces, e.{}g. $L^p_{(ω)}$ is a twisted convolution algebra when $1\le p\le 2$ and appropriate weight $ω$.
In this paper, for a locally compact commutative hypergroup $K$ and for a pair $(Φ_1, Φ_2)$ of Young functions satisfying sequence condition, we give a necessary condition in terms of aperiodic elements of the center of $K,$ for the convolution $f\ast g$ to exist a.e., where $f$ and $g$ are arbitrary elements of Orlicz spaces $L^{Φ_1}(K)$ and $L^{Φ_2}(K)$, respectively. As an application, we present some equivalent conditions for compactness of a compactly generated locally compact abelian group. Moreover, we also characterize compact convolution operators from $L^1_w(K)$ into $L^Φ_w(K)$ for a…
We study the continuity and compactness of embeddings for radial Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces with weights in the Muckenhoupt class $A_\infty$. The main tool is a discretization in terms of an almost orthogonal wavelet expansion adapted to the radial situation.
The pull-back, push-forward and multiplication of smooth functions can be extended to distributions if their wave front set satisfies some conditions. Thus, it is natural to investigate the topological properties of these operations between spaces D\_$Γ$ of distributions having a wave front set included in a given closed cone $Γ$ of the cotangent space. As discovered by S. Alesker, the pull-back is not continuous for the usual topology on D\_$Γ$ , and the tensor product is not separately continuous. In this paper, a new topology is defined for which the pull-back and push-forward are continuou…
We prove a criterion for continuity of bilinear maps on countable direct sums of topological vector spaces. As a first application, we get a new proof for the fact (due to Hirai et al. 2001) that the map taking a pair of test functions on R^n to their convolution is continuous. The criterion also allows an open problem by K.-H. Neeb to be solved: If E is a locally convex space, regard the tensor algebra T(E) as the locally convex direct sum of the projective tensor powers T^j(E) of E. We show that T(E) is a topological algebra if and only if every sequence of continuous seminorms on E has an u…

Let $\mathcal{L}$ be a sub-Laplacian on a connected Lie group $G$ of polynomial growth. It is well known that, if $F : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{C}$ is in the Schwartz class $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R})$, then the convolution kernel $\mathcal{K}_{F(\mathcal{L})}$ of the operator $F(\mathcal{L})$ is in the Schwartz class $\mathcal{S}(G)$. Here we prove a sort of converse implication for a class of groups $G$ including all solvable noncompact groups of polynomial growth. We also discuss the problem whether integrability of $\mathcal{K}_{F(\mathcal{L})}$ implies continuity of $F$.
