In Papers I and II of this series, the existence of two distinct halo populations of stars have been found in the solar neighborhood. Precise relative ages and orbital parameters are determined for 67 halo and 16 thick-disk stars having metallicities in the range -1.4 < [Fe/H] < -0.4 to better understand the context of the two halo populations in the formation and evolution of the Galaxy. Ages are derived by comparing the positions of stars in the logT_{eff}-log(g) diagram with isochrones from the Y^2 models interpolated to the exact [Fe/H] and [alpha/Fe] values of each star. Possible systematic errors in T_{eff} and log(g) are considered and corrected. With space velocities from Paper I as initial conditions, orbital integrations have been carried out using a detailed, observationally constrained Milky Way model including a bar and spiral arms. The `high-alpha' halo stars have ages 2-3 Gyr larger than the `low-alpha' ones. The orbital parameters show very distinct differences between the `high-alpha' and `low-alpha' halo stars. The `low-alpha' ones have r_{max}'s to 30-40 kpc, z_{max}'s to approx. 18 kpc, and e_{max}'s clumped at values greater than 0.85, while the `high-alpha' ones, r_{max}'s to about 16 kpc, z_{max}'s to 6-8 kpc, and e_{max} more or less uniformly distributed over 0.4-1.0. A dual in situ-plus-accretion formation scenario best explains the existence and characteristics of these two halo populations, but one remaining defect is that this model is not consistent regarding the r_{max}'s obtained for the in situ `high-alpha' component; the predicted values are too small. It appears that omega Cen may have contributed in a significant way to the existence of the `low-alpha' component; recent models, including dynamical friction and tidal stripping, have produced orbital parameters as great as those of the `low-alpha' component.
We analyse the thermal emission and resonant scattering of CMB radiation from the dark ages halos in the rotational lines of the helium hydride ion (HeH$^{+}$), one of the first chemical compounds in the Universe. Evaluating the optical depth, thermal and resonant brightness temperatures and spectral fluxes of dark ages halos is based on computing the cross-sections and rate coefficients of excitation/de-excitation of the lowest five rotational states of HeH$^{+}$ by inelastic collisions with atomic hydrogen. It was shown that in the Dark Ages the collisional excitation/de-excitation by atoms …
We exploit the [Mg/Mn]-[Al/Fe] chemical abundance plane to help identify nearby halo stars in the 14th data release from the APOGEE survey that have been accreted on to the Milky Way. Applying a Gaussian Mixture Model, we find a `blob' of 856 likely accreted stars, with a low disc contamination rate of ~7%. Cross-matching the sample with the second data release from Gaia gives us access to parallaxes and apparent magnitudes, which place constraints on distances and intrinsic luminosities. Using a Bayesian isochrone pipeline, this enables us to estimate new ages for the accreted stars, with typ…
The growth and properties of galaxies are thought to be closely connected to the ones of their host dark matter halos. Despite the importance of this so-called galaxy-halo connection, the potential role of dark matter halos in regulating observed galaxy properties remains yet to be fully understood. In this work, we derive the ages, metallicites and [Mg/Fe] abundances from optical spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey of nearby central galaxies, and study them in terms of their host halos. We investigate how the scatter in the stellar-to-halo mass relation and the velocity dispersion - hal…
We combine photometric metallicities with astrometry from Gaia DR3 to examine the chemodynamic structure of ~250,000 K dwarfs in the Solar Neighborhood (SN). In kinematics, we observe ridges/clumps of "kinematic groups", like studies of more massive main-sequence stars. Here we note clear differences in both metallicity and vertical velocity as compared to the surrounding regions in velocity space and hypothesize this is due to differences in mean age. To test this, we develop a method to estimate the age distribution of sub-populations of stars. In this method, we use GALAH data to define pro…
Knowledge of ages for stars formed over a galaxy's lifetime is fundamental to understand its formation and evolution. However, stellar ages are difficult to obtain since they cannot be measured from observations, being comparison with stellar models (Soderblom 2010) required. Alternatively, age distributions can be derived applying the robust technique of colour-magnitude diagram fitting (Gallart et al. 2005), till now mainly employed to study nearby galaxies. The new distances to individual Milky Way stars from the Gaia mission (Brown et al. 2018) have allowed us to use this technique to deri…
The emission from dark ages halos in the lines of transitions between lowest rotational levels of hydrogen and hydrogen deuteride molecules is analyzed. It is assumed molecules to be excited by CMB and collisions with hydrogen atoms. The physical parameters of halos and number density of molecules are precalculated in assumption that halos are homogeneous top-hat spheres formed from the cosmological density perturbations in the four-component Universe with post-Planck cosmological parameters. The differential brightness temperatures and differential spectral fluxes in the rotational lines of H…

Old Globular Clusters (GCs) in the Milky Way have ages of about 13 Gyr, placing their formation time in the reionization epoch. We propose a novel scenario for the formation of these systems based on the merger of two or more atomic cooling halos at high-redshift (z>6). First generation stars are formed as an intense burst in the center of a minihalo that grows above the threshold for hydrogen cooling (halo mass M_h~10^8 Msun) by undergoing a major merger within its cooling timescale (~150 Myr). Subsequent minor mergers and sustained gas infall bring new supply of pristine gas at the halo cent…
The vast majority of Milky Way stellar halo stars were likely accreted from a small number ($\lesssim$3) of relatively large dwarf galaxy accretion events. However, the timing of these events is poorly constrained, relying predominantly on indirect dynamical mixing arguments or imprecise age measurements of stars associated with debris structures. Here, we aim to infer robust stellar ages for stars associated with galactic substructures to more directly constrain the merger history of the Galaxy. By combining kinematic, asteroseismic, and spectroscopic data where available, we infer stellar ag…

We determined the ages, the kinematic parameters and Galactic orbital parameters of six metal-poor (-2.4<[Fe/H]<-1 dex) F-type high proper motion (HPM) stars to investigate their HPM nature and origin. For the kinematical procedure, the astrometric data from the Gaia DR2 was used. High resolution ELODIE spectra of the six dwarfs were also used to obtain accurate [Fe/H] abundances and up-to-date [$α$/Fe] abundances. The calculations for stellar ages were based on Bayesian statistics, with the computed ages falling in the range 9.5-10.1 Gyrs. On the basis of the metallicities and ages, six HMP s…

We explore how the star formation and metal enrichment histories of present-day galaxies have been affected by environment combining stellar population parameter estimates and group environment characterization for SDSS DR7. We compare stellar ages, stellar metallicities and element abundance ratios [alpha/Fe] of satellite and central galaxies, as a function of their stellar and host group halo mass, controlling for the current star formation rate and for the infall epoch. We confirm that below log(Mstar/Msun)=10.5 satellites are older and metal-richer than equally-massive central galaxies. On…
Stellar Ages and Metallicities of Central and Satellite Galaxies: Implications for Galaxy Formation and Evolution
In this work we combine information from solar-like oscillations, high-resolution spectroscopy and Gaia astrometry to derive stellar ages, chemical abundances and kinematics for a group of seven metal-poor Red Giants and characterise them in a multidimensional chrono-chemo-dynamical space. Chemical abundance ratios were derived through classical spectroscopic analysis employing 1D LTE atmospheres on Keck/HIRES spectra. Stellar ages, masses and radii were calculated with grid-based modelling, taking advantage of availability of asteroseismic information from Kepler. The dynamical properties wer…
The standard picture of galaxy formation motivates the decomposition of the Milky Way into 3--4 stellar populations with distinct kinematic and elemental abundance distributions: the thin disk, thick disk, bulge, and stellar halo. To test this idea, we construct a Gaussian mixture model (GMM) for both simulated and observed stars in the Solar neighborhood, using measured velocities and iron abundances (i.e., an augmented Toomre diagram) as the distributions to be decomposed. We compare results for the Gaia-APOGEE DR16 crossmatch catalog of the Solar neighborhood with those from a suite of synt…
The formation of galaxies can be understood in terms of the assembly patterns of each type of galactic component. To perform this kind of analysis, is necessary to define some criteria to separate those components. Decomposition methods based on dynamical properties are more physically motivated than photometry-based ones. We use the unsupervised Gaussian Mixture model of \texttt{galactic structure finder} to extract the components of a sub-sample of galaxies with Milky Way-like masses from the EAGLE simulations. A clustering in the space of first and second order dynamical moments of all iden…
We directly compare predictions of dwarf galaxy properties in a semi-analytic model (SAM) with those extracted from a high-resolution hydrodynamic simulation. We focus on galaxies with halo masses of 1e9<Mvir/Msol<1e11 at high redshift ($z\ge5$). We find that, with the modifications previously proposed in Qin et al. (2018), including to suppress the halo mass and baryon fraction, as well as to modulate gas cooling and star formation efficiencies, the SAM can reproduce the cosmic evolution of galaxy properties predicted by the hydrodynamic simulation. These include the galaxy stellar mass funct…
There is a dichotomy in the Milky Way in the $[α/$Fe]-[Fe/H] plane, in which stars fall into high-$α$, and low-$α$ sequences. The high-$α$ sequence comprises mostly old stars, and the low-$α$ sequence comprises primarily young stars. The origin of this dichotomy is uncertain. To better understand how the high- and low-$α$ stars are affiliated, we examine if the high- and low-$α$ sequences have distinct orbits at all ages, or if age sets the orbital properties of stars irrespective of their $α$-enhancement. Orbital actions $J_R$, $J_z$, and $J_ϕ$ (or $L_z$) are our labels of stellar dynamics. W…

Using the Keck Cosmic Web Imager we obtain spectra of several globular clusters (GCs), ultra compact dwarfs (UCDs) and the inner halo starlight of M87, at a similar projected galactocentric radius of $\sim$5 kpc. This enables us, for the first time, to apply the same stellar population analysis to the GCs, UCDs and starlight consistently to derive ages, metallicities and alpha-element abundances in M87. We find evidence for a dual stellar population in the M87 halo light, i.e an $\sim$80\% component by mass which is old and metal-rich and a $\sim$20\% component which is old but metal-poor. Two…
We study the sizes, angular momenta and morphologies of high-redshift galaxies using an update of the Meraxes semi-analytic galaxy evolution model. Our model successfully reproduces a range of observations from redshifts $z=0$-$10$. We find that the effective radius of a galaxy disc scales with UV luminosity as $R_e\propto L_{\textrm{UV}}^{0.33}$ at $z=5$-$10$, and with stellar mass as $R_e\propto M_\ast^{0.24}$ at $z=5$ but with a slope that increases at higher redshifts. Our model predicts that the median galaxy size scales with redshift as $R_e \propto (1+z)^{-m}$, where $m=1.98\pm0.07$ for…

The clusters and their literature analogues are of moderate metallicity -1.1<[Fe/H]<-0.75 dex and old (10 Gyr). Mg, Ca, …
We report photometric estimates of effective temperature, $T_{\rm eff}$, metallicity, [Fe/H], carbonicity, [C/Fe], and absolute carbon abundances, $A{\rm (C)}$, for over 700,000 stars from the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) Data Release 2, covering a substantial fraction of the equatorial Sloan Digital Sky Survey Stripe 82. We present an analysis for two stellar populations: 1) halo main-sequence turnoff stars and 2) K-dwarf stars of mass $0.58 < M/M_{\odot} <0.75$ in the Solar Neighborhood. Application of the Stellar Photometric Index Network Explorer (SPHINX) to the mixe…
Recent stellar population analysis of early-type galaxy spectra has demonstrated that the low-mass galaxies in cluster centers have high [$α/\rm Fe$] and old ages characteristic of massive galaxies and unlike the low-mass galaxy population in the outskirts of clusters and fields. This phenomenon has been termed "coordinated assembly" to highlight the fact that the building blocks of massive cluster central galaxies are drawn from a special subset of the overall low-mass galaxy population. Here we explore this idea in the IllustrisTNG simulations, particularly the TNG300 run, in order to unders…
