We combine photometric metallicities with astrometry from Gaia DR3 to examine the chemodynamic structure of ~250,000 K dwarfs in the Solar Neighborhood (SN). In kinematics, we observe ridges/clumps of "kinematic groups", like studies of more massive main-sequence stars. Here we note clear differences in both metallicity and vertical velocity as compared to the surrounding regions in velocity space and hypothesize this is due to differences in mean age. To test this, we develop a method to estimate the age distribution of sub-populations of stars. In this method, we use GALAH data to define probability distributions of W vs. [M/H] in age bins of 2 Gyr and determine optimal age distributions as the best fit weighted sum of these distributions. This process is then validated using the GALAH subset. We estimate the probable age distribution for regions in the kinematic plane, where we find significant sub-structure that is correlated with the kinematic groups. Most notably, we find an age gradient across the Hercules streams that is correlated with birth radius. Finally, we examine the bending and breathing modes as a function of age. From this, we observe potential hints of an increase in the bending amplitude with age, which will require further analysis in order to confirm it. This is one of the first studies to examine these chemodynamics in the SN using primarily low-mass stars and we hope these findings can better constrain dynamical models of the Milky Way due to the increase in resolution the sample size provides.
In a companion paper, we have presented the combined asteroseismic-spectroscopic dataset obtained from CoRoT lightcurves and APOGEE infra-red spectra for 678 solar-like oscillating red giants in two fields of the Galactic disc (CoRoGEE). We have measured chemical abundance patterns, distances, and ages of these field stars which are spread over a large radial range of the Milky Way's disc. Here we show how to simulate this dataset using a chemodynamical Galaxy model. We also demonstrate how the observation procedure influences the accuracy of our estimated ages.
The Galactic Bulge can uniquely be studied from large samples of individual stars, and is therefore of prime importance for understanding the stellar population structure of bulges in general. Here the observational evidence on the kinematics, chemical composition, and ages of Bulge stellar populations based on photometric and spectroscopic data is reviewed. The bulk of Bulge stars are old and span a metallicity range -1.5<~[Fe/H]<~+0.5. Stellar populations and chemical properties suggest a star formation timescale below ~2 Gyr. The overall Bulge is barred and follows cylindrical rotation, and…
We analysed the chemodynamical evolution of the Galactic disc using precise [Mg/Fe] abundances from a previous study and accurate Gaia data. For this purpose, we estimated ages and dynamical properties for 366 MSTO solar neighbourhood stars from the AMBRE Project using PARSEC isochrones together with astrometric and photometric values from Gaia DR2. We find a radial gradient of -0.099 ${\pm}$ 0.031 dex kpc$^{-1}$ for [M/H] and +0.023 ${\pm}$ 0.009 dex kpc for the [Mg/Fe] abundance. The steeper [Mg/Fe] gradient than that found in the literature is a result of the improvement of the AMBRE [Mg/Fe…
Galactic Archaeology, i.e. the use of chemo-dynamical information for stellar samples covering large portions of the Milky Way to infer the dominant processes involved in its formation and evolution, is now a powerful method thanks to the large recently completed and ongoing spectroscopic surveys. It is now important to ask the right questions when analyzing and interpreting the information contained in these rich datasets. To this aim, we have developed a chemodynamical model for the Milky Way that provides quantitative predictions to be compared with the chemo-kinematical properties extracte…
The Galactic disk exhibits complex chemical and dynamical substructure thought to be induced by the bar, spiral arms, and satellites. Here, we explore the chemical signatures of bar resonances in action and velocity space and characterize the differences between the signatures of corotation and higher-order resonances using test particle simulations. Thanks to recent surveys, we now have large datasets containing metallicities and kinematics of stars outside the solar neighborhood. We compare the simulations to the observational data from Gaia EDR3 and LAMOST DR5 and find weak evidence for a s…
We present chemodynamical links between the present-day Milky Way halo field star population and Galactic globular clusters (GCs) using a dataset that combines information from the $\rm{\it Gaia}$ space mission and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV, DR14). Moreover, we incorporated a sample of halo giant stars with a distinct chemical signature (strong CN bandheads) that resembles the light-elements anomaly otherwise only seen in the second generation of GC stellar populations. Using three different tagging techniques, we could successfully establish unique associations between 151 extrati…

In Papers I and II of this series, the existence of two distinct halo populations of stars have been found in the solar neighborhood. Precise relative ages and orbital parameters are determined for 67 halo and 16 thick-disk stars having metallicities in the range -1.4 < [Fe/H] < -0.4 to better understand the context of the two halo populations in the formation and evolution of the Galaxy. Ages are derived by comparing the positions of stars in the logT_{eff}-log(g) diagram with isochrones from the Y^2 models interpolated to the exact [Fe/H] and [alpha/Fe] values of each star. Possible systemat…
The $([α/{\rm Fe}],[{\rm Fe/H}])$ distribution of Milky Way stars shows at least two distinct sequences, which have traditionally been associated with the thin and thick disc components. The abundance distribution varies systematically with location $R$ and $|z|$ across the Galaxy. Using an analytical chemodynamical model that includes the effects of radial migration and kinematic heating, we show that it is possible to reproduce the observed abundance distribution at different locations. Unlike some earlier models, our scheme does not require a distinct thick disc component emerging from a se…
Oxygen and carbon are important elements in stellar populations. Their behavior refers to the formation history of the stellar populations. C and O abundances would also obviously influence stellar opacities and the overall metal abundance $Z$. With observed high-quality spectroscopic properties, we construct stellar models with C and O elements, to give more accurate ages for 70 metal-poor dwarfs, which have been determined to be high-$α$ halo, low-$α$ halo and thick-disk stars. Our results show that high-$α$ halo stars are relatively older than low-$α$ halo stars by around 2.0 Gyr. The thick…

[Abridge] In the first paper of this series (paper I) we presented a new approach for studying the chemo-odynamical evolution in disk galaxies, focusing on the Milky Way. Here we extend these results to different distances from the Galactic center, looking for variations of observables that can be related to on-going and future spectroscopic surveys. By separating the effects of kinematic heating and radial migration, we show that migration is much more important, even for the oldest and hottest stellar population. The distributions of stellar birth guiding radii and final guiding radii (signi…
The study of the stellar formation history in the solar neighborhood is a powerful technique to recover information about the early stages and evolution of the Milky Way. We present a new method which consists of directly probing the formation history from the nearby stellar remnants. We rely on the volume complete sample of white dwarfs within 20 pc, where accurate cooling ages and masses have been determined. The well characterized initial-final mass relation is employed in order to recover the initial masses (1 < M/Msun < 8) and total ages for the local degenerate sample. We correct for mod…
We determined the ages, the kinematic parameters and Galactic orbital parameters of six metal-poor (-2.4<[Fe/H]<-1 dex) F-type high proper motion (HPM) stars to investigate their HPM nature and origin. For the kinematical procedure, the astrometric data from the Gaia DR2 was used. High resolution ELODIE spectra of the six dwarfs were also used to obtain accurate [Fe/H] abundances and up-to-date [$α$/Fe] abundances. The calculations for stellar ages were based on Bayesian statistics, with the computed ages falling in the range 9.5-10.1 Gyrs. On the basis of the metallicities and ages, six HMP s…
We report the discovery of three nearby old halo white dwarf candidates in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), including two stars in a common proper motion binary system. These candidates are selected from our 2800 square degree proper motion survey on the Bok and U.S. Naval Observatory Flagstaff Station 1.3m telescopes, and they display proper motions of 0.4-0.5 arcsec/yr. Follow-up MMT spectroscopy and near-infrared photometry demonstrate that all three objects are hydrogen-dominated atmosphere white dwarfs with Teff = 3700 - 4100 K. For average mass white dwarfs, these temperature estimat…

We study the chemodynamical properties of the Carina dwarf spheroidal by combining an intermediate spectroscopic resolution dataset of more than 900 red giant and red clump stars, with high-precision photometry to derive the atmospheric parameters, metallicities and age estimates for our targets. Within the red giant branch population, we find evidence for the presence of three distinct stellar sub-populations with different metallicities, spatial distributions, kinematics and ages. As in the Fornax and Sculptor dwarf spheroidals, the subpopulation with the lowest average metallicity is more e…
We have constructed a catalog containing best available astrometric, photometric, radial velocity and astrophysical data for mainly F-type and G-type stars (called the Astrometric catalog associated with Astrophysical Data, ACAD), which contains 27,553 records, and is used for the purpose of analyzing the stellar kinematics in the Solar neighborhood. Using the Lindblad-Oort Model and compiled ACAD, we calculated the Solar motion and Oort constants in different age/metallicity bins. The evolution of kinematical parameters with stellar age and metallicity were investigated directly. The results …
The variations of kinematic parameters with age are considered for a sample of 15 402 thin-disk O--F stars with accurate $α$, $δ$, $μ$, and $π>3$ mas from the Hipparcos catalogue and radial velocities from the PCRV catalogue. The ages have been calculated from the positions of the stars on the Hertzsprung--Russell diagram relative to the isochrones from the Padova database by taking into account the extinction from the previously constructed 3D analytical model and extinction coefficient $R_V$ from the 3D map of its variations. Smooth, mutually reconciled variations of the velocity dispersions…
In this paper we investigate how the chemical and kinematic properties of stars vary as a function of age. Using data from a variety of photometric, astrometric and spectroscopic surveys, we calculate the ages, phase space information and orbits for $\sim$125,000 stars covering a wide range of stellar parameters. We find indications that the inner regions of the disk reached high levels of enrichment early, while the outer regions were more substantially enriched in intermediate and recent epochs. We consider these enrichment histories through comparison of the ages of stars, their metalliciti…
Recent improvements in the age dating of stellar populations and single stars allow us to study the ages and abundance of stars and galaxies with unprecedented accuracy. We here compare the relation between age and α-element abundances for stars in the solar neighborhood to that of local, early-type galaxies. We find both relations to be very similar. Both fall into two regimes with a flat slope for ages younger than ~9 Gyr and a steeper slope for ages older than that value. This quantitative similarity seems surprising, given the different types of galaxies and scales involved. For the sample…
Currently clusters/associations of stars are mainly detected as surface density enhancements relative to the background field. While clusters form, their surface density increases. It likely decreases again at the end of the star formation process when the system expands as a consequence of gas expulsion. Therefore the surface density of a single cluster can change considerably in young clusters/associations during the first 20 Myr of their development. We investigate the effect of the gas expulsion on the detectability of clusters/associations typical for the solar neighborhood, where the sta…
Based on a new version of the Hipparcos catalogue and an updated Geneva-Copenhagen survey of F and G dwarfs, we analyze the space velocity field of about 17000 single stars in the solar neighborhood. The main known clumps, streams, and branches (Pleiades, Hyades, Sirius, Coma Berenices, Hercules, Wolf 630-alpha Ceti, and Arcturus) have been identified using various approaches. The evolution of the space velocity field for F and G dwarfs has been traced as a function of the stellar age. We have managed to confirm the existence of the recently discovered KFR08 stream. We have found 19 Hipparcos …
Using a sample of 31 main-sequence OB stars located between galactocentric distances 8.4 - 15.6 kpc, we aim to probe the present-day radial abundance gradients of the Galactic disk. The analysis is based on high-resolution spectra obtained with the MIKE spectrograph on the Magellan Clay 6.5-m telescope on Las Campanas. We used a non-NLTE analysis in a self-consistent semi-automatic routine based on TLUSTY and SYNSPEC to determine atmospheric parameters and chemical abundances. Stellar parameters (effective temperature, surface gravity, projected rotational velocity, microturbulence, and macrot…
Apache Point Observatory follow-up of ACcelerating Candidate ExopLanet host Stars (APO ACCELS): Ages for 166 Accelerating Stars in the Northern Hemisphere
We present a detailed model atmosphere analysis of two of the oldest stars known in the solar neighborhood, the high proper motion white dwarfs SDSS J110217.48+411315.4 (hereafter J1102) and WD 0346+246 (hereafter WD0346). We present trigonometric parallax observations of J1102, which places it at a distance of only 33.7 +- 2.0 pc. Based on the state of the art model atmospheres, optical, near-, mid-infrared photometry, and distances, we constrain the temperatures, atmospheric compositions, masses, and ages for both stars. J1102 is an 11 Gyr old (white dwarf plus main-sequence age), 0.62 Msol …
We combine spectroscopic, photometric, and astrometric information from APOGEE data release 17 and $Gaia$ early data release 3 to perform a self-consistent characterization of $Gaia$-Sausage/Enceladus (GSE), the remnant of the last major merger experienced by the Milky Way, considering stars and globular clusters (GCs) altogether. Our novel set of chemodynamical criteria to select genuine stars of GSE yields a metallicity distribution function with a median [Fe/H] of $-1.22$ dex and $0.23$ dex dispersion. Stars from GSE present an excess of [Al/Fe] and [Mg/Mn] (also [Mg/Fe]) in comparison to s…
We revisit the moving groups (MGs) in the solar neighborhood with a sample of 91969 nearby stars constructed from LAMOST DR7. Using the wavelet technique and Monte Carlo simulations, five MGs together with a new candidate located at $V \simeq$ -130 km s$^{-1}$ are detected simultaneously in $V-\sqrt{U^2+2V^2}$ space. Taking into account the other known MGs, we conclude that MGs in the Galactic disk are spaced by approximately 15 $\sim$ 25 km s$^{-1}$ along $V$ velocity. The origin of detected MGs is analysed through the distributions of [Fe/H]$-$[Mg/Fe] and ages. Our results support attributin…
We investigate the distribution of bright main sequence stars near the northern edge of the M33 disk. Clustering on sub-kpc scales is seen among stars with ages near 10 Myr, and two large star-forming complexes are identified. Similar large-scale grouping is not evident among stars with ages 100 Myr. These stars are also distributed over a much larger area than those with younger ages, and it is argued that random stellar motions alone, as opposed to orderly motions of the type spurred by large scale secular effects, can re-distribute stars out to distances of at least 2 kpc (i.e. one disk sca…
We report the discovery of a young (only 30-40\,Myr) snake-like structure (dubbed a stellar "snake") in the solar neighborhood from {\it Gaia} DR2. The average distance of this structure is about 310\,pc from us. Both the length and width are over 200\,pc, but the thickness is only about 80\,pc. The "snake" has one tail and two dissolving cores, which can be clearly distinguished in the 6D phase space. The whole structure includes thousands of members with a total mass of larger than 2000\,$M_{\odot}$ in an uniform population. The population is so young that it can not be well explained with t…
A previous study of correlations between element abundance ratios, [X/Fe], and ages of solar twin stars is extended to include Sc, Mn, Cu, and Ba. HARPS spectra with S/N > 600 are used to derive very precise (+/- 0.01 dex) differential abundances, and stellar ages with internal errors less than 1 Gyr are obtained by interpolation in the logg - Teff diagram between isochrones calculated with the Aarhus Stellar Evolution Code. For stars younger than 6 Gyr, [X/Fe] is tightly correlated with stellar age for all elements. For ages between 6 and 9 Gyr, the [X/Fe] - age correlations break down and th…
With the calculated guiding center radius $R_{guiding}$ and birth radius $R_{birth}$, we investigate the role of radial migration on the description of lithium evolution in the Galactic disk based on the upper envelope of the A(Li) vs. [Fe/H] diagram. Using migration distances, we find that stars in the solar neighborhood are born at different locations in the galactic disk, and cannot all be explained by models of chemical evolution in the solar neighborhood. It is found that the upper envelope of the A(Li) vs. [Fe/H] diagram varies significantly with $R_{birth}$, which explains the decrease …
Rotation is a directly-observable stellar property, and drives magnetic field generation and activity through a magnetic dynamo. Main sequence stars with masses below approximately 0.35Msun (mid-to-late M dwarfs) are fully-convective, and are expected to have a different type of dynamo mechanism than solar-type stars. Measurements of their rotation rates provide insights into these mechanisms, but few rotation periods are available for these stars at field ages. Using photometry from the MEarth transit survey, we measure rotation periods for 387 nearby, mid-to-late M dwarfs in the Northern hem…
Images recorded with the Gemini South Adaptive Optics Imager (GSAOI) and corrected for atmospheric seeing by the Gemini Multiconjugate Adaptive Optics System (GeMS) are used to investigate the stellar contents of the young outer Galactic disk clusters Haffner 17, NGC 2401, and NGC 3105. Ages estimated from the faint end of the main sequence (MS) and the ridgeline of the pre-main sequence (PMS) on the (K, J-K) color-magnitude diagrams are consistent with published values that are based on the MS turn-off, with the GSAOI data favoring the younger end of the age range for NGC 2401 in the literatu…
We present the results of a density-based clustering analysis of the 6-dimensional XYZ Galactic positions and UVW space velocities of nearby ($\leq$ 200 pc) Gaia EDR3 stars with radial velocities using HDBSCAN, in opposition to previous studies that only included positions and tangential velocities. Among the 241 recovered clusters, we identify more than 50 known associations, 32 new candidate stellar streams aged 100 Myr-3 Gyr, 9 extensions of known Theia groups uncovered by Kounkel & Covey (2019), and 8 newly recognized coronae around nearby open clusters. Three confirmed exoplanet-hosting s…
The age and chemical characteristics of the Galactic bulge link to the formation and evolutionary history of the Galaxy. Data-driven methods and large surveys enable stellar ages and precision chemical abundances to be determined for vast regions of the Milky Way, including the bulge. Here, we use the data-driven approach of The Cannon, to infer the ages and abundances for 125,367 stars in the Milky Way, using spectra from Apache Point Observatory Galaxy Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) DR14. We examine the ages and metallicities of 1654 bulge stars within $R_{\text{GAL}}<3.5$ kpc. We focus on fi…

I have used high-precision photometry and astrometry from the third data release of Gaia (DR3) to perform a survey for members of the Taurus star-forming region and young associations in its vicinity. This work has produced a new catalog of 532 adopted members of Taurus, which has only minor changes relative to the previous catalog from Esplin & Luhman 2019. I have used the Gaia astrometry to divide the Taurus members into 13 groups that have distinct kinematics. Meanwhile, I have identified 1378 candidate members of seven associations near Taurus. All of these associations have histograms of …
Accurate characterization of stellar populations is of prime importance to correctly understand the formation and evolution process of our Galaxy. The field of asteroseismology has been particularly successful in such an endeavor providing fundamental parameters for large samples of stars in different evolutionary phases. We present our results on determinations of masses, radii, and distances of stars in the CoRoT and Kepler fields, showing that we can map and date different regions of the galactic disk and distinguish gradients in the distribution of stellar properties at different heights. …
We present isochrone ages and initial bulk metallicities ($\rm [Fe/H]_{bulk}$, by accounting for diffusion) of 163,722 stars from the GALAH Data Release 2, mainly composed of main sequence turn-off stars and subgiants ($\rm 7000 K>T_{eff}>4000 K$ and $\rm log g>3$ dex). The local age-metallicity relationship (AMR) is nearly flat but with significant scatter at all ages; the scatter is even higher when considering the observed surface abundances. After correcting for selection effects, the AMR appear to have intrinsic structures indicative of two star formation events, which we speculate are co…
Stellar ages are a crucial component to studying the evolution of the Milky Way. Using Gaia DR2 distance estimates, it is now possible to estimate stellar ages for a larger volume of evolved stars through isochrone matching. This work presents [M/H]-age and [$α$/M]-age relations derived for different spatial locations in the Milky Way disc. These relations are derived by hierarchically modelling the star formation history of stars within a given chemical abundance bin. For the first time, we directly observe that significant variation is apparent in the [M/H]-age relation as a function of both…
A reliable census of pre-main sequence stars with known ages is critical to our understanding of early stellar evolution, but historically there has been difficulty in separating such stars from the field. We present a trained neural network model, Sagitta, that relies on Gaia DR2 and 2MASS photometry to identify pre-main sequence stars and to derive their age estimates. Our model successfully recovers populations and stellar properties associated with known star forming regions up to five kpc. Furthermore, it allows for a detailed look at the star-forming history of the solar neighborhood, pa…
Open star clusters from the MWSC (Milky Way Star Clusters) catalogue have been used to determine the Galactic rotation parameters. The circular rotation velocity of the solar neighborhood around the Galactic center has been found from data on more than 2000 clusters of various ages to be V_0=236+/-6 km s^{-1} for the adopted Galactocentric distance of the Sun R_0=8.3+/-0.2 kpc. The derived angular velocity parameters are Ω_0=28.48+/-0.36 km s^{-1} kpc^{-1}, Ω'_0=-3.50+/-0.08 km s^{-1} kpc^{-2}, and Ω"_0= 0.331+/-0.037 km s^{-1} kpc^{-3}. The influence of the spiral density wave has been detect…
