We compute boundary three-point functions involving two scalars and a gauge field of arbitrary spin in the AdS vacuum of Vasiliev's higher spin gravity, for any deformation parameter λ. In the process, we develop tools for extracting scalar field equations in arbitrary higher spin backgrounds. We work in the context of hs[λ] + hs[λ] Chern-Simons theory coupled to scalar fields, and make efficient use of the associative lone-star product underlying the hs[λ] algebra. Our results for the correlators precisely match expectations from CFT; in particular they match those of any CFT with W_{\infinity}[λ] symmetry at large central charge, and with primary operators dual to the scalar fields. As this is expected to include the `t Hooft limit of the W_N minimal model CFT, our results serve as further evidence of the conjectured AdS/CFT duality between these two theories.
The divergences coming from a particular sector of gravitational fluctuations around a generic background in general theories of quadratic gravity are analyzed. They can be summarized in a particular type of scalar model, whose properties are analyzed.
We study the Weak Gravity Conjecture in the presence of scalar fields. The Weak Gravity Conjecture is a consistency condition for a theory of quantum gravity asserting that for a U(1) gauge field, there is a particle charged under this field whose mass is bounded by its charge. It was extended to a statement about any canonical pair of (p - 1)-dimensional object and p-form coupling to it, in particular to axion-instanton pairs. The gauge-scalar Weak Gravity Conjecture is a modification of this bound that includes scalar interactions. We propose a similar extension to cases where scalar fields …
We study the zeroth law for Killing horizon in scalar-hairy Lovelock gravity, and show that the surface gravity of a general Killing horizon in the scalar-hairy Lovelock gravity is constant, provided that the dominant energy condition is obeyed by the matter field.
We consider f(R) gravity theories in the presence of a scalar field minimally coupled to gravity with a self-interacting potential. When the scalar field backreacts to the metric we find at large distances scalarized Schwarzschild-AdS and Schwarzschild-AdS-like black hole solutions. At small distances due to strong curvature effects and the scalar dynamis we find a rich structure of scalarized black hole solutions. When the scalar field is conformally coupled to gravity we also find scalarized black hole solutions at small distances.
We revisit the analogy between a minimally coupled scalar field in general relativity and a perfect fluid, correcting previous identifications of effective temperature and chemical potential. This provides a useful complementary picture for the first-order thermodynamics of scalar-tensor gravity, paving the way for the Einstein frame formulation (which eluded previous attempts) and raises interesting questions to further develop the analogy.
Analytical solutions of nonminimally coupled scalar field cosmology corresponding to critical scalar field values constitute a potential challenge to the recent first-order thermodynamics of scalar-tensor gravity (a formalism picturing general relativity as the zero-temperature equilibrium state for modified gravity). The critical solutions are unstable with respect to homogeneous perturbations, hence unphysical.
Scalar-tensor theories of gravity are known to allow significant deviations from general relativity through various astrophysical phenomena. In this paper, we formulate a scalar-connection gravity by setting up scalars and connection configurations instead of metric. Since the matter sector is not straightforward to conceive without a metric, we invoke cosmological fluids in terms of their one-form velocity in the volume element of the invariant action. This leads to gravitational equations with a perfect fluid source and a generated metric, which are expected to produce reasonable deviations …
One-loop effective potential of scalar-tensor gravity with a quartic scalar field self-interaction is evaluated up to first post-Minkowskian order. The potential develops an instability in the strong field regime which is expected from an effective theory. Depending on model parameters the instability region can be exponentially far in a strong field region. Possible applications of the model for inflationary scenarios are highlighted. It is shown that the model can enter the slow-roll regime with a certain set of parameters.
We derive an exact wormhole spacetime supported by a phantom scalar field in the context of $f({\sf R})$ gravity. Without specifying the form of the $f({\sf R})$ function, the scalar field self-interacts with a mass term potential that is derived from the scalar equation and the resulting $f({\sf R})$ model is purely supported by the scalar field and it is free of ghosts and avoids the tachyonic instability.
In this paper, using Hamilton-Jacobi ansatz, we investigate scalar particles tunneling radiation in the Demianski-Newman spacetime. We get the effective temperature with influences of quantum gravity, and compare this temperature with the original temperature of the Demianski-Newman black hole. We find that it's similar to the case of fermions, for scalar particles the influence of quantum gravity will also slow down the increase of Hawking temperatures, which naturally leads to remnants left in the evaporation.
Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity has recently been known to exhibit spontaneous scalarization. In the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet term the no-hair theorem can be evaded and novel black hole solutions with non-trivial scalar fields have been found besides the general relativistic solutions. In this paper, we aim to investigate the possibility of observationally testing Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity using thin accretion disk properties around such scalarized black holes. Using the Novikov-Thorne model, we numerically calculate the electromagnetic flux, temperature distribution, emiss…
The classical double copy relations establish correspondence between exact gravity solutions and their counterparts in biadjoint and gauge theories. In this work, we investigate a peculiar case of double copy relations arising in exact solutions of the scalar gravity equation, relating static spacetime geometry to the Komar density distribution. We use a scalar-restricted static metric ansatz to isolate the degree of freedom governed by the linear equation for the zeroth copy. The corresponding metric solutions are interpreted as describing gravity without self-interaction, based on the Komar …
Pure $R^2$ gravity has been shown to be equivalent to Einstein gravity with non-zero cosmological constant and a massless scalar field. We show that the Palatini formulation of pure $R^2$ gravity is equivalent to Einstein gravity with non-zero cosmological constant as before but with no massless scalar field. This is an important new development because the massless scalar field is not readily identifiable with any known particle in nature or unknown particles like cold dark matter which are expected to be massive. We then include a non-minimally coupled Higgs field as well as fermions to disc…
We consider $f(R)$ gravity theories in the presence of a scalar field minimally coupled to gravity with a self-interacting potential in $(2+1)$-dimensions. Without specifying the form of the $f(R)$ function, we first obtain an exact black hole solution dressed with scalar hair with the scalar charge to appear in the $f(R)$ function and we discuss its thermodynamics. This solution at large distances gives a hairy BTZ black hole, and it reduces to the BTZ black hole when the scalar field decouples. In a pure $f(R)$ gravity supported by the scalar field, we find an exact hairy black hole similar …
Out of several possible extensions of general relativity, the scalar-tensor theory is the most popular for several reasons. Since the quantum description of gravity is yet to be formulated properly, the understanding of a gravitational theory remains incomplete until the study of thermodynamic and fluid-gravity aspects, which provides an alternative viewpoint to understand the gravitational theory. In this review, we study these features (thermodynamics and the fluid gravity analogy) in a rigorous and yet in a concise manner for the scalar-tensor gravity, which has been revealed in our recent …
We consider a recently proposed class of extended teleparallel theories of gravity, which entail a scalar field which is non-minimally coupled to the torsion of a flat, metric-compatible connection. This class of scalar-torsion theories of gravity is constructed in analogy to and as a direct extension of the well-studied class of scalar-curvature gravity theories, and has various common features, such as the conformal frame freedom. For this class we determine the parametrized post-Newtonian limit, both for a massive and a massless scalar field. In the massive case, we determine the effective …
We investigate whether the classical equivalence of $f(R)$ gravity and its formulation as scalar-tensor theory still holds at the quantum level. We explicitly compare the corresponding one-loop divergences and find that the equivalence is broken by off-shell quantum corrections, but recovered on-shell.
