The thermal activation of magnetization reversal in magnetic nanoparticles is controlled by the anisotropy-energy barrier. Using perturbation theory, exact diagonalization and stability analysis of the ferromagnetic spin-s Heisenberg model with coupling or single-site anisotropy, we study the effects of quantum fluctuations on the height of the energy barrier. Opposed to the classical case, there is no critical anisotropy strength discriminating between reversal via coherent rotation and via nucleation/domain-wall propagation. Quantum fluctuations are seen to lower the barrier depending on the anisotropy strength, dimensionality and system size and shape. In the weak-anisotropy limit, a macrospin model is shown to emerge as the effective low-energy theory where the microscopic spins are tightly aligned due to the ferromagnetic exchange. The calculation provides explicit expressions for the anisotropy parameter of the effective macrospin. We find a reduction of the anisotropy-energy barrier as compared to the classical high spin-s limit.
A magnet with precessing magnetization pumps a spin current into adjacent leads. As a special case of this spin pumping, a precessing macrospin (magnetization) can assist electrons in tunneling. In small systems, however, the Coulomb blockade effect can block the transport of electrons. Here, we investigate the competition between macrospin-assisted tunneling and Coulomb blockade for the simplest system where both effects meet; namely, for a single tunnel junction between a normal metal and a metallic ferromagnet with precessing magnetization. By combining Fermi's golden rule with magnetizatio…
The relative contributions of in-plane (damping-like) and out-of-plane (field-like) spin-transfer-torques in the magnetization switching of out-of-plane magnetized magnetic tunnel junctions (pMTJ) has been theoretically analyzed using the transformed Landau-Lifshitz (LL) equation with the STT terms. It is demonstrated that in a pMTJ structure obeying macrospin dynamics, the out-of-plane torque influences the precession frequency but it does not contribute significantly to the STT switching process (in particular to the switching time and switching current density), which is mostly determined b…
We consider stochastic energy balance and entropy production (EP) in a generalized Langevin dynamics of macrospins, allowing for both amplitude and direction fluctuations, under external magnetic field. EP is calculated using Fokker-Planck equation, distinguishing between reversible and irreversible parts of probability currents. The system entropy increases due to irreversible non-equilibrium processes, and reduces as heat dissipates to surrounding environment. Using path probability distributions of time-forward trajectories and conjugate trajectories under time reversal, we obtain fluctuati…
We present a comprehensive experimental and numerical study of magnetization dynamics triggered in a thin metallic film by single-cycle terahertz pulses of $\sim20$ MV/m electric field amplitude and $\sim1$ ps duration. The experimental dynamics is probed using the femtosecond magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE), and it is reproduced numerically using macrospin simulations. The magnetization dynamics can be decomposed in three distinct processes: a coherent precession of the magnetization around the terahertz magnetic field, an ultrafast demagnetization that suddenly changes the anisotropy of t…
A complete analytical solution to the optimal reversal of a macrospin with easy-axis anisotropy is presented. Optimal control path minimizing the energy cost of the reversal is identified and used to derive time-dependent direction and amplitude of the optimal switching field. The minimum energy cost of the reversal scales inversely with the switching time for fast switching, follows an exponential asymptotics for slow switching and reaches the lower limit proportional to the energy barrier between the target states and to the damping parameter at infinitely long switching time. For a given sw…
We study the magnetization dynamics of thin-film magnetic elements with in-plane magnetization subject to a spin-current flowing perpendicular to the film plane. We derive a reduced partial differential equation for the in-plane magnetization angle in a weakly damped regime. We then apply this model to study the experimentally relevant problem of switching of an elliptical element when the spin-polarization has a component perpendicular to the film plane, restricting the reduced model to a macrospin approximation. The macrospin ordinary differential equation is treated analytically as a weakly…
The dynamics of a macrospin model for a single magnetic domain is investigated in two cases: (i) under the action of a periodic magnetic field and (ii) under the external field plus a spin transfer torque from spin-polarized current or spin current. It has been proved that (i) without spin transfer torque, the trajectory of magnetization (hysteresis) is always a closed curve oscillating between two stable points and following the same path each time; (ii) under the action of a constant field (or with small periodic perturbation) and a constant spin transfer torque, the spin would always turn t…
We simulate the spin torque-induced reversal of the magnetization in thin disks with perpendicular anisotropy at zero temperature. Disks typically smaller than 20 nm in diameter exhibit coherent reversal. A domain wall is involved in larger disks. We derive the critical diameter of this transition. Using a proper definition of the critical voltage, a macrospin model can account perfectly for the reversal dynamics when the reversal is coherent. The same critical voltage appears to match with the micromagnetics switching voltage regardless of the switching path.
Micromagnetics simulation based on the classical Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation has long been a powerful method for modeling magnetization dynamics and reversal of three-dimensional (3D) magnets. For two-dimensional (2D) magnets, the magnetization reversal always accompanies the collapse of the magnetization even at low temperatures due to intrinsic strong spin fluctuation. We propose a micromagnetic theory that explicitly takes into account the rapid demagnetization and remagnetization dynamics of 2D magnets during magnetization reversal. We apply the theory to a single-domain magnet …
A mechanism of current-induced magnetization reversal based on the parametric resonance is described. The source of the magnetization reversal is a current-induced magnetic field, which is applied perpendicularly to the easy axis of magnetic anisotropy of a ferromagnetic nanomagnet. The current-induced magnetic field was measured in a FeCoB nanomagnet to be 60 Gauss at a current density of 65 mA/um2. Two mechanisms of the magnetization reversal are described and calculated. The first mechanism is the reversal by a RF electrical current, which modulated at a frequency close to the precession fr…
The conditions of field and voltage for inducing steady state excitations in fully perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions (pMTJs), adapted for memory applications, were numerically investigated by the resolution of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation in the macrospin approach. Both damping-like and the field-like spin transfer torque terms were taken into account in the simulations, as well as the contribution of the second order uniaxial anisotropy term (K2), which has been recently revealed in MgO-based pMTJs. An in-plane applied magnetic field balances the out of plane symmetry of the pMT…
Magnetization reversal of interconnected Kagome artificial spin ice was studied by the first-order reversal curve (FORC) technique based on the magneto-optical Kerr effect and magnetoresistance measurements. The magnetization reversal exhibits a distinct six-fold symmetry with the external field orientation. When the field is parallel to one of the nano-bar branches, the domain nucleation/propagation and annihilation processes sensitively depend on the field cycling history and the maximum field applied. When the field is nearly perpendicular to one of the branches, the FORC measurement reveal…
Local magnetic moments can be created in graphene by incorporating different defects. The possibility of regulating dynamics of magnetization in graphene, by employing the Purcell effect, is analyzed. The role of the system parameters in magnetization reversal is studied. The characteristics of such a reversal can be varied in a wide range, which can be used for various applications in spintronics. It is shown that fast magnetization reversal generates coherent radiation.
The concept of perpendicular shape anisotropy spin-transfer torque magnetic random-access memory (PSA-STT-MRAM) consists in increasing the storage layer thickness to values comparable to the cell diameter, to induce a perpendicular shape anisotropy in the magnetic storage layer. Making use of that contribution, the downsize scalability of the STT-MRAM may be extended towards sub-20 nm technological nodes, thanks to a reinforcement of the thermal stability factor $Δ$. Although the larger storage layer thickness improves $Δ$, it is expected to negatively impact the writing current and switching …
Effects of a microwave voltage on magnetization precession are analyzed based on a macrospin model. The microwave voltage induces the oscillating anisotropy field through the voltage controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA) effect, and then stimulates the magnetization. The large angle precession is maintained if the magnetization synchronizes with the microwave voltage. The effective equations of motion of the magnetization with an oscillating anisotropy field are derived, and the mechanism of the synchronization is clarified by analyzing the derived equations of motion. The conditions of the an…
In this article we analyze by modeling two possible mechanisms for magnetization switching using spin orbit torques, which have been reported to cause field-free deterministic switching in experiments. Here we compare the field-free magnetization switching due to a tilt of the anisotropy direction against the use of an antiferromagnetic bias field. Simple results obtained analytically show that a bias field not only causes the magnetization reversal but also reduces the corresponding energy barrier. The critical current required for magnetization switching is analyzed on the basis of a macrosp…
Microwave assisted magnetization reversal are studied in the bulk bilayer exchange coupled system. We investigate the nonlinear magnetization reversal dynamics in a perpendicular exchange spring media using Landau-Lifshitz equation. In the limit of the infinite thickness of the system, the propagation field leads the reversal of the system. The reduction of the switching field and the magnetization profile in the extended system are studied numerically. The possibility to study the dynamics analytically is discussed and an approximation where two P-modes are coupled by an interaction field is …
We investigate the magnetization reversal of single-domain magnetic nanoparticle driven by linear down-chirp microwave magnetic field pulse. Numerical simulations based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation reveal that solely down-chirp pulse is capable of inducing subnanosecond magnetization reversal. With a certain range of initial frequency and chirp rate, the required field amplitude is much smaller than that of constant-frequency microwave field. The fast reversal is because the down-chirp microwave field acts as an energy source and sink for the magnetic particle before and after cross…
We have considered the effect of different spin-orbit interaction mechanisms on the process of demagnetization under the influence of short-pulse lasers. All-optical magnetization reversal of perpendicularly magnetized thin films can occur if there are sufficient strong spin-Hall, skew scattering, and Rashba interactions. In the presence of spin-orbit interactions, the transient charge currents provide the generation of transverse-spin currents and accumulations, which eventually exert spin-transfer torque on the magnetization. By combining the optically excited spin-dependent diffusive transp…
The magnetization reversal process in thin-film ferromagnetic elements with surface anisotropy of various shapes and sizes is investigated by means of numerical simulation. The dependence of the perpendicular and in-plane hysteresis loops on the element thickness and the value of the surface anisotropy constant is obtained. For sufficiently large values of the surface anisotropy constant the magnetization reversal of thin-film elements is shown to occur due to the nucleation of the buckling mode. For an elongated rectangular element the nucleation field of the buckling mode is proportional to …
We demonstrate the current-induced complete magnetization reversal of the free layer in lateral nanowires patterned from metallic pseudo spin valve stacks. The reversal is induced by Oersted fields in conjunction with a dipolar coupling via the lateral stray fields of the two magnetic layers. Starting from the parallel state the Oersted field rotates the magnetization vectors of both magnetic layers in opposite directions so far off the wire axis that the dipolar coupling becomes strong enough to stabilize an antiparallel configuration. As simulations and experiments show this coupling is only…
The reversal of a uniform axial magnetization in a ferromagnetic nanotube (FNT) has been predicted to nucleate and propagate through vortex domains forming at the ends. In dynamic cantilever magnetometry measurements of individual FNTs, we identify the entry of these vortices as a function of applied magnetic field and show that they mark the nucleation of magnetization reversal. We find that the entry field depends sensitively on the angle between the end surface of the FNT and the applied field. Micromagnetic simulations substantiate the experimental results and highlight the importance of t…

We report that the irreversible magnetization switching process in ferromagnetic nanoparticles is governed by the formation and dynamics of topological point-defects in the form of hedgehog-antihedgehog pairs. After nucleation, these pairs rapidly separate with speeds exceeding domain wall velocities, and they generate an emergent electric field of solenoidal character and substantial magnitude.
We show that a slowly decaying current pulse can lead to nearly deterministic precessional switching in the presence of noise. We consider a biaxial macrospin, with an easy axis in the plane and a hard axis out-of-the plane, typical of thin film nanomagnets patterned into asymmetric shapes. Out-of-plane precessional magnetization orbits are excited with a current pulse with a component of spin polarization normal to the film plane. By numerically integrating the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert-Slonczewski equation we show that thermal noise leads to strong dephasing of the magnetization orb…
A formulation for thermal noise in the stochastic form of the Landau Lifshitz Bloch equation used for modeling the magnetization dynamics at elevated temperatures is presented. The diffusion coefficients for thermal fluctuations are obtained via the Fokker-Plank equation using the mean field approximation of the field in defining the free energy. The presented model leads to a mean magnetization consistent with the equilibrium magnetization for small and large particles. The distribution of the magnetization magnitude is of a Poisson-like type rather than the classical Boltzmann distribution. …
We investigate the magnetization reversal of single-domain magnetic nanoparticle driven by the circularly polarized cosine chirp microwave pulse (CCMP). The numerical findings, based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, reveal that the CCMP is by itself capable of driving fast and energy-efficient magnetization reversal. The microwave field amplitude and initial frequency required by a CCMP are much smaller than that of the linear down-chirp microwave pulse. This is achieved as the frequency change of the CCMP closely matches the frequency change of the magnetization precession which leads…
It has been shown that a single-domain magnetic nanoparticle can be effectively switched by a linear down-chirp microwave field pulse (DCMWP) in zero temperature limit. However, finite temperature is ubiquitous in practice. Here, we study the effect of finite temperature on the DCMWP-induced magnetization reversal based on the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. It is found that any one of the three controlling parameters of a DCMWP, i.e. the amplitude, chirp rate, or initial frequency, decreases with increasing temperature while the other two are fixed. The maximal temperature at whi…
We show that the spin-orbit torque induced magnetization switching in nanomagnets presenting Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DMI) interaction is governed by a chiral domain nucleation at the edges. The nucleation is induced by the DMI and the applied in-plane magnetic field followed by domain wall propagation. Our micromagnetic simulations show that the DC switching current can be defined as the edge nucleation current, which decreases strongly with increasing amplitude of the DMI. This description allows us to build a simple analytical model to quantitatively predict the switching current. We find tha…
The half antivortex, a fundamental topological structure which determines magnetization reversal of submicron magnetic devices with domain walls, has been suggested also to play a crucial role in spin torque induced vortex core reversal in circular disks. Here we report on magnetization reversal in circular disks with nanoholes through consecutive metastable states with half antivortices. In-plane anisotropic magnetoresistance and broadband susceptibility measurements accompanied by micromagnetic simulations reveal that cobalt disks with two and three linearly arranged nanoholes directed at 45…
