This paper is devoted to the study of Lifshitz tails for a continuous matrix-valued Anderson-type model $H_ω$ acting on $L^2(\R^d)\otimes \C^{D}$, for arbitrary $d\geq 1$ and $D\geq 1$. We prove that the integrated density of states of $H_ω$ has a Lifshitz behavior at the bottom of the spectrum. We obtain a Lifshitz exponent equal to $-d/2$ and this exponent is independent of $D$. It shows that the behaviour of the integrated density of states at the bottom of the spectrum of a quasi-d-dimensional Anderson model is the same as its behaviour for a d-dimensional Anderson model.
By using the adequate modified Prüfer variables, precise upper and lower bounds on the density of states in the (internal) Lifshitz tails are proven for a 1D Anderson model with bounded potential.
We prove an upper bound for the (differentiated) density of states of the Anderson model at the bottom of the spectrum. The density of states is shown to exhibit the same Lifshitz tails upper bound as the integrated density of states.
We consider the multi-particle Anderson model in the continuum and show that under some mild assumptions on the inter-particle interaction and the external potential, its lower spectral edge is almost surely constant and is the same with that of the single-particle model. We then obtain the lifshitz asymptotics for the multi-particle hamiltonian in the continuum near the bottom of the spectrum.
We consider the $d$-dimensional fractional Anderson model $(-Δ)^α+ V_ω$ on $\ell^2(\mathbb Z^d)$ where $0<α\leq 1$. Here $-Δ$ is the negative discrete Laplacian and $V_ω$ is the random Anderson potential consisting of iid random variables. We prove that the model exhibits Lifshitz tails at the lower edge of the spectrum with exponent $ d/ (2α)$. To do so, we show among other things that the non-diagonal matrix elements of the negative discrete fractional Laplacian are negative and satisfy the two-sided bound $$ \frac{c_{α,d}}{|n-m|^{d+2α}} \leq -(-Δ)^α(n,m)\leq \frac{C_{α,d}}{|n-m|^{d+2α}} $$ …
Consider the 3D Anderson model with a zero mean and bounded i.i.d. random potential. Let $λ$ be the coupling constant measuring the strength of the disorder, and $σ(E)$ the self energy of the model at energy $E$. For any $ε>0$ and sufficiently small $λ$, we derive almost sure localization in the band $E \le -σ(0)-λ^{4-ε}$. In this energy region, we show that the typical correlation length $ξ_E$ behaves roughly as $O((|E|-σ(E))^{-1/2})$, completing the argument outlined in the unpublished work of T. Spencer.
Originally introduced in solid state physics to model amorphous materials and alloys exhibiting disorder induced metal-insulator transitions, the Anderson model $H_ω= -Δ+ V_ω $ on $l^2(\bZ^d)$ has become in mathematical physics as well as in probability theory a paradigmatic example for the relevance of disorder effects. Here $Δ$ is the discrete Laplacian and $V_ω = \{V_ω(x): x \in \bZ^d\}$ is an i.i.d. random field taking values in $\bR$. A popular model in probability theory is the parabolic Anderson model (PAM), i.e. the discrete diffusion equation $\partial_t u(x,t) =-H_ω u(x,t)$ on $ \bZ^…
In this note, we study Lifshitz tails for a 2D Landau Hamiltonian perturbed by a random alloy-type potential constructed with single site potentials decaying at least at a Gaussian speed. We prove that, if the Landau level stays preserved as a band edge for the perturbed Hamiltonian, at the Landau levels, the integrated density of states has a Lifshitz behavior of the type $e^{-\log^2|E-2bq|}$.
We study the ergodic properties of Delone-Anderson operators, using the framework of randomly coloured Delone sets and Delone dynamical systems. In particular, we show the existence of the integrated density of states and, under some assumptions on the geometric complexity of the underlying Delone sets, we obtain information on the almost-sure spectrum of the family of random operators. We then exploit these results to study the Lifshitz-tail behaviour of the integrated density of states of a Delone-Anderson operator at the bottom of the spectrum. Furthermore, we use Lifshitz-tail estimates as…
We introduce and prove local Wegner estimates for continuous generalized Anderson Hamiltonians, where the single-site random variables are independent but not necessarily identically distributed. In particular, we get Wegner estimates with a constant that goes to zero as we approach the bottom of the spectrum. As an application, we show that the (differentiated) density of states exhibits the same Lifshitz tails upper bound as the integrated density of states.
The current paper is devoted to the study of existence, uniqueness and Lifshitz tails of the integrated density of surface states (IDSS) for Schrödinger operators with alloy type random surface potentials. We prove the existence and uniqueness of the IDSS for negative energies, which is defined as the thermodynamic limit of the normalized eigenvalue counting functions of localized operators on strips with sections being special cuboids. Under the additional assumption that the single-site impurity potential decays anisotropically, we also prove that the IDSS for negative energies exhibits Lifs…
We prove Lifshitz behavior at the bottom of the spectrum for non--negative random potentials, i.\,e.\ show that the IDS is exponentially small at low energies. The theory is developed for the breather potential and generalized to all non--negative random potentials in a second step. Since our models need not be ergodic, we need to identify the minimum of the spectrum. We deduce an initial length scale estimate from the Lifshitz bound for the breather model and combine it with a recent Wegner estimate to establishes Anderson localization via multi-scale analysis. Finally, for ergodic models, we…
In this paper we consider the Interband Light Absorption Coefficient for various models. We show that at the lower and upper edges of the spectrum the Lifshitz tails behaviour of the density of states implies similar behaviour for the ILAC at appropriate energies. The Lifshitz tails property is also exhibited at some points corresponding to the internal band edges of the density of states.
We derive bounds on the integrated density of states for a class of Schrödinger operators with a random potential. The potential depends on a sequence of random variables, not necessarily in a linear way. An example of such a random Schrödinger operator is the breather model, as introduced by Combes, Hislop and Mourre. For these models we show that the integrated density of states near the bottom of the spectrum behaves according to the so called Lifshitz asymptotics. This result can be used to prove Anderson localization in certain energy/disorder regimes.
We study Lifshitz tails for random Schrödinger operators where the random potential is alloy type in the sense that the single site potentials are independent, identically distributed, but they may have various function forms. We suppose the single site potentials are distributed in a finite set of functions, and we show that under suitable symmetry conditions, they have Lifshitz tail at the bottom of the spectrum except for special cases. When the single site potential is symmetric with respect to all the axes, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of Lifshitz tails. …
In the present note, we determine the ground state energy and study the existence of Lifshitz tails near this energy for some non monotonous alloy type models. Here, non monotonous means that the single site potential coming into the alloy random potential changes sign. In particular, the random operator is not a monotonous function of the random variables.
We prove that the homogeneous hierarchical Anderson model exhibits a Lifshits tail at the upper edge of its spectrum. The Lifshits exponent is given in terms of the spectral dimension of the homogeneous hierarchical structure. Our approach is based on Dirichlet-Neumann bracketing for the hierarchical Laplacian and a large-deviation argument.
In this paper we study Lifshitz tails for continuous Laplacian in a continuous site percolation situation. By this we mean that we delete a random set $Γ_ω$ from $IR^d$ and consider the Dirichlet or Neumann Laplacian on $D=IR^d\setminusΓ_ω$. We prove that the integrated density of states exhibits Lifshitz behavior at the bottom of the spectrum when we consider Dirichlet boundary conditions, while when we consider Neumann boundary conditions, it is bounded from below by a van Hove behavior. The Lifshitz tails are proven independently of the percolation probability, whereas for the van Hove case…
We investigate the behavior near zero of the integrated density of states $\ell$ for random Schrödinger operators $Φ(-Δ) + V^ω$ in $L^2(\mathbb R^d)$, $d \geq 1$, where $Φ$ is a complete Bernstein function such that for some $α\in (0,2]$, one has $ Φ(λ) \asymp λ^{α/2}$, $λ\searrow 0$, and $V^ω(x) = \sum_{ \mathbf{i}\in \mathbb{Z}^d} q_{\mathbf{i}}(ω) W(x-\mathbf{i})$ is a random nonnegative alloy-type potential with compactly supported single site potential $W$. We prove that there are constants $C, \widetilde C,D, \widetilde D>0$ such that $$ -C \leq\liminf_{λ\searrow 0} \frac{λ^{d/α}}{|\log …
We prove a Lifshitz tail bound on the integrated density of states of random breather Schrödinger operators. The potential is composed of translated single site potentials. The single site potential is an indicator function of set $tA$ where $t$ is from the unit interval and $A$ is a measurable set contained in the unit cell. The challenges of this model are: Since $A$ is not assumed to be star-shaped the dependence of the potential on the parameter $t$ is not monotone. It is also non-linear and not differentiable.
We consider the 2D Landau Hamiltonian $H$ perturbed by a random alloy-type potential, and investigate the Lifshitz tails, i.e. the asymptotic behavior of the corresponding integrated density of states (IDS) near the edges in the spectrum of $H$. If a given edge coincides with a Landau level, we obtain different asymptotic formulae for power-like, exponential sub-Gaussian, and super-Gaussian decay of the one-site potential. If the edge is away from the Landau levels, we impose a rational-flux assumption on the magnetic field, consider compactly supported one-site potentials, and formulate a the…
We consider the parabolic Anderson problem $\partial_t u=κΔu+ξu$ on $(0,\infty)\times \Z^d$ with random i.i.d. potential $ξ=(ξ(z))_{z\in\Z^d}$ and the initial condition $u(0,\cdot)\equiv1$. Our main assumption is that $\esssupξ(0)=0$. Depending on the thickness of the distribution $\prob(ξ(0)\in\cdot)$ close to its essential supremum, we identify both the asymptotics of the moments of $u(t,0)$ and the almost-sure asymptotics of $u(t,0)$ as $t\to\infty$ in terms of variational problems. As a by-product, we establish Lifshitz tails for the random Schrödinger operator $-κΔ-ξ$ at the bottom of its…
The survival problem for a diffusing particle moving among random traps is considered. We introduce a simple argument to derive the quenched asymptotics of the survival probability from the Lifshitz tail effect for the associated operator. In particular, the upper bound is proved in fairly general settings and is shown to be sharp in the case of the Brownian motion in the Poissonian obstacles. As an application, we derive the quenched asymptotics for the Brownian motion in traps distributed according to a random perturbation of the lattice.
We consider the annealed asymptotics for the survival probability of Brownian motion among randomly distributed traps. The configuration of the traps is given by independent displacements of the lattice points. We determine the long time asymptotics of the logarithm of the survival probability up to a multiplicative constant. As applications, we show the Lifshitz tail effect of the density of states of the associated random Schrödinger operator and derive a quantitative estimate for the strength of intermittency in the Parabolic Anderson problem.
As put forth by Kerov in the early 1990s and elucidated in subsequent works, numerous properties of Wigner random matrices are shared by certain linear maps playing an important rôle in the representation theory of the symmetric group. We introduce and study an operator of representation-theoretic origin which bears some similarity to discrete random Schrödinger operators acting on the $d$-dimensional lattice. In particular, we define its integrated density of states and prove that in dimension $d \geq 2$ it boasts Lifshitz tails similar to those of the Anderson model. The construction is clos…
We consider Schrödinger operators on $L^2(R^d)$ with a random potential concentrated near the surface $R^{d_1}\times\{0\}\subset R^d $. We prove that the integrated density of states of such operators exhibits Lifshits tails near the bottom of the spectrum. From this and the multiscale analysis by Boutet de Monvel and Stollmann [Arch. Math. 80 (2003) 87] we infer Anderson localization (pure point spectrum and dynamical localization) for low energies. Our proof of Lifshits tail relies on spectral properties of Schrödinger operators with partially periodic potentials. In particular, we show that…
We resolve an existing question concerning the location of the mobility edge for operators with a hopping term and a random potential on the Bethe lattice. The model has been among the earliest studied for Anderson localization, and it continues to attract attention because of analogies which have been suggested with localization issues for many particle systems. We find that extended states appear through disorder enabled resonances well beyond the energy band of the operator's hopping term. For weak disorder this includes a Lifshits tail regime of very low density of states.
We study the Integrated Density of States of one-dimensional random operators acting on $\ell^2(\mathbb Z)$ of the form $T + V_ω$ where $T$ is a Laurent (also called bi-infinite Toeplitz) matrix and $V_ω$ is an Anderson potential generated by i.i.d. random variables. We assume that the operator $T$ is associated to a bounded, Hölder-continuous symbol $f$, that attains its minimum at a finite number of points. We allow for $f$ to attain its minima algebraically. The resulting operator $T$ is long-range with weak (algebraic) off-diagonal decay. We prove that this operator exhibits Lifshitz tails…
The density of states of disordered hopping models generically exhibits an essential singularity around the edges of its support, known as a Lifshitz tail. We study this phenomenon on the Bethe lattice, i.e. for the large-size limit of random regular graphs, converging locally to the infinite regular tree, for both diagonal and off-diagonal disorder. The exponential growth of the volume and surface of balls on these lattices is an obstacle for the techniques used to characterize the Lifshitz tails in the finite-dimensional case. We circumvent this difficulty by computing bounds on the moments …
We consider the discrete Laplace operator $Δ^{(N)}$ on Erdős--Rényi random graphs with $N$ vertices and edge probability $p/N$. We are interested in the limiting spectral properties of $Δ^{(N)}$ as $N\to\infty$ in the subcritical regime $0<p<1$ where no giant cluster emerges. We prove that in this limit the expectation value of the integrated density of states of $Δ^{(N)}$ exhibits a Lifshitz-tail behavior at the lower spectral edge E=0.
In this paper we consider some Anderson type models, with decaying randomness and the free parts having long range tails. The randomness may decay at different rates in different directions, though in majority of directions we require some sort of short range decay. We show that there is pure a.c. spectrum and some pure point spectrum in such models.
We consider the large-time behavior of the solution $u\colon [0,\infty)\times\Z\to[0,\infty)$ to the parabolic Anderson problem $\partial_t u=κΔu+ξu$ with initial data $u(0,\cdot)=1$ and non-positive finite i.i.d. potentials $(ξ(z))_{z\in\Z}$. Unlike in dimensions $d\ge2$, the almost-sure decay rate of $u(t,0)$ as $t\to\infty$ is not determined solely by the upper tails of $ξ(0)$; too heavy lower tails of $ξ(0)$ accelerate the decay. The interpretation is that sites $x$ with large negative $ξ(x)$ hamper the mass flow and hence screen off the influence of more favorable regions of the potential…
We consider the Anderson model on a strip. Assuming that potentials have bounded density with considerable tails we get a lower bound for the fluctuations of the logarithm of the Green's function in a finite box. This implies an effective estimate by $ \exp(CW^2) $ for the localization length of the Anderson model on the strip of width $ W $. The results are obtained, actually, for a more general model with a non-local operator in the vertical direction.
We give a new expression for the law of the eigenvalues of the discrete Anderson model on the finite interval $[0,N]$, in terms of two random processes starting at both ends of the interval. Using this formula, we deduce that the tail of the eigenvectors behaves approximatelylike $\exp(σB\_{|n-k|}-γ\frac{|n-k|}{4})$ where $B\_{s}$ is the Brownian motion and $k$ is uniformly chosen in $[0,N]$ independentlyof $B\_{s}$. A similar result has recently been shown by B. Rifkind and B. Virag in the critical case, that is, when the random potential is multiplied by a factor $\frac{1}{\sqrt{N}}$
We discuss the long time behaviour of the parabolic Anderson model, the Cauchy problem for the heat equation with random potential on $\Z^d$. We consider general i.i.d. potentials and show that exactly \emph{four} qualitatively different types of intermittent behaviour can occur. These four universality classes depend on the upper tail of the potential distribution: (1) tails at $\infty$ that are thicker than the double-exponential tails, (2) double-exponential tails at $\infty$ studied by Gärtner and Molchanov, (3) a new class called \emph{almost bounded potentials}, and (4) potentials bounde…
We study a discrete Laplace operator $Δ$ on percolation subgraphs of an infinite graph. The ball volume is assumed to grow at most polynomially. We are interested in the behavior of the integrated density of states near the lower spectral edge. If the graph is a Cayley graph we prove that it exhibits Lifshitz tails. If we merely assume that the graph has an exhausting sequence with positive $δ$-dimensional density, we obtain an upper bound on the integrated density of states of Lifshitz type.
We study the solutions $u=u(x,t)$ to the Cauchy problem on $\mathbb Z^d\times(0,\infty)$ for the parabolic equation $\partial_t u=Δu+ξu$ with initial data $u(x,0)=1_{\{0\}}(x)$. Here $Δ$ is the discrete Laplacian on $\mathbb Z^d$ and $ξ=(ξ(z))_{z\in\mathbb Z^d}$ is an i.i.d.\ random field with doubly-exponential upper tails. We prove that, for large $t$ and with large probability, a majority of the total mass $U(t):=\sum_x u(x,t)$ of the solution resides in a bounded neighborhood of a site $Z_t$ that achieves an optimal compromise between the local Dirichlet eigenvalue of the Anderson Hamilton…
It is shown that in a large class of disordered systems with non-degenerate disorder, in presence of non-local interactions, the Integrated Density of States (IDS) is at least Hölder continuous in one dimension and universally infinitely differentiable in higher dimensions. This result applies also to the IDS in any finite volume subject to the random potential induced by an ambient, infinitely extended disordered media. Dimension one is critical: in the Bernoulli case, within the class of exponential interactions, the IDS measure undergoes continuity phase transitions, from absolutely continu…
We shall consider the Schrödinger operators on $\mathbf{R}^2$ with random $δ$ magnetic fields. Under some mild conditions on the positions and the fluxes of the $δ$-fields, we prove the spectrum coincides with $[0,\infty)$ and the integrated density of states (IDS) decays exponentially at the bottom of the spectrum (Lifshitz tail), by using the Hardy type inequality by Laptev-Weidl. We also give a lower bound for IDS at the bottom of the spectrum.
