The property of cyclicity of a linear operator, or equivalently the property of simplicity of its spectrum, is an important spectral characteristic that appears in many problems of functional analysis and applications to mathematical physics. In this paper we study cyclicity in the context of rank-one perturbation problems for self-adjoint and unitary operators. We show that for a fixed non-zero vector the property of being a cyclic vector is not rare, in the sense that for any family of rank-one perturbations of self-adjoint or unitary operators acting on the space, that vector will be cyclic for every operator from the family, with a possible exception of a small set with respect to the parameter. We discuss applications of our results to Anderson-type Hamiltonians.
We survey the relationships of rank one self-adjoint and unitary perturbations as well as finite rank unitary perturbations with various branches of analysis and mathematical physics. We include the case of non-inner characteristic operator functions. For rank one perturbations and non-inner characteristic functions, we prove a representation formula for the adjoint of the Clark operator. Throughout we mention many open problems at varying levels of difficulty.
In this note, following the theory of discrete frame perturbations in a complex Hilbert space, we examine perturbation of rank $n$ continuous frame, rank $n$ continuous Bessel family and rank $n$ continuous Riesz family in a non-commutative setting, namely in a right quaternionic Hilbert space.
A holomorphic family of closed operators with a rank one perturbation given by the function $x^{\frac{m}{2}}$ is studied. The operators can be used in a toy model of renormalization group.
A number of random matrix ensembles permitting exact determination of their eigenvalue and eigenvector statistics maintain this property under a rank $1$ perturbation. Considered in this review are the additive rank $1$ perturbation of the Hermitian Gaussian ensembles, the multiplicative rank $1$ perturbation of the Wishart ensembles, and rank $1$ perturbations of Hermitian and unitary matrices giving rise to a two-dimensional support for the eigenvalues. The focus throughout is on exact formulas, which are typically the result of various integrable structures. The simplest is that of a determ…
We derive a description of the family of canonical selfadjoint extensions of the operator of multiplication in a de Branges space in terms of singular rank-one perturbations using distinguished elements from the set of functions associated with a de Branges space. The scale of rigged Hilbert spaces associated with this construction is also studied from the viewpoint of de Branges's theory.
Motivated by applications of the discrete random Schrödinger operator, mathematical physicists and analysts, began studying more general Anderson-type Hamiltonians; that is, the family of self-adjoint operators $$H_ω= H + V_ω$$ on a separable Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, where the perturbation is given by $$V_ω= \sum_n ω_n (\cdot, φ_n)φ_n$$ with a sequence $\{φ_n\}\subset\mathcal{H}$ and independent identically distributed random variables $ω_n$. We show that the the essential parts of Hamiltonians associated to any two realizations of the random variable are (almost surely) related by a rank …
For any $β>0$, we provide a tridiagonal matrix model and compute the joint eigenvalue density of a random rank one non-Hermitian perturbation of Gaussian and Laguerre $β$-ensembles of random matrices.
We prove decorrelation estimates for generalized lattice Anderson models on $Z^d$ constructed with finite-rank perturbations in the spirit of Klopp \cite{klopp}. These are applied to prove that the local eigenvalue statistics $ξ^ω_{E}$ and $ξ^ω_{E^\prime}$, associated with two energies $E$ and $E'$ satisfying $|E - E'| > 4d$, are independent. That is, if $I,J$ are two bounded intervals, the random variables $ξ^ω_{E}(I)$ and $ξ^ω_{E'}(J)$, are independent and distributed according to a compound Poisson distribution whose Lévy measure has finite support. We also prove that the extended Minami es…
The classical Aronszajn-Donoghue theorem states that for a rank one perturbation of a self-adjoint operator (by a cyclic vector) the singular parts of the spectral measures of the original and perturbed operators are mutually singular. As simple direct sum type examples show, this result does not hold for finite rank perturbations. However, the set of exceptional perturbations is pretty small. Namely, for a family of rank $d$ perturbations $A_{\boldsymbolα} := A +\mathbf{B} \boldsymbolα \mathbf{B}^*$, $\mathbf{B}:\mathbb{C}^d\to \mathbf{H}$, with Ran$\,\mathbf{B}$ being cyclic for $A$, paramet…
We study the hybrid type of rank one perturbations in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and $\mathbb{R}^3$, where the perturbation supported by a circle/sphere is considered together with the delta potential supported by a point outside of the circle/sphere. The construction of the self-adjoint Hamiltonian operator associated with the formal expressions for the rank one perturbation supported by a circle and by a point is explicitly given. The bound state energies and scattering properties for each problem are also studied. Finally, we consider the rank one perturbation supported by a deformed circle/sphere and …
We construct a norm resolvent approximation to the family of point interactions $f(+0)=αf(-0)+βf'(-0)$, $f'(+0)=α^{-1}f'(-0)$ by Schrödinger operators with localized rank-two perturbations coupled with short range potentials. In particular, a new approximation to the $δ'$-interactions is obtained.
This survey focuses on two main types of finite-rank perturbations: self-adjoint and unitary. We describe both classical and more recent spectral results. We pay special attention to singular self-adjoint perturbations and model representations of unitary perturbations.
We prove that certain natural random variables associated with the local eigenvalue statistics for generalized lattice Anderson models constructed with finite-rank perturbations are compound Poisson distributed. This distribution is characterized by the fact that the Levy measure is supported on at most a finite set determined by the rank. The proof relies on a Minami-type estimate for finite-rank perturbations. For Anderson-type continuum models on $\R^d$, we prove a similar result for certain natural random variables associated with the local eigenvalue statistics. We prove that the compound…
Following [D,BDG,DR], I describe several exactly solvable families of closed operators. Some of these families are defined by the theory of singular rank one perturbations. The remaining families are Schrodinger operators with inverse square potentials and various boundary conditions. I describe a close relationship between these families. In all of them one can observe interesting renormalization group flows (action of the group of dilations).
In this note we prove Minami's estimate for a class of discrete alloy-type models with a sign-changing single-site potential of finite support. We apply Minami's estimate to prove Poisson statistics for the energy level spacing. Our result is valid for random potentials which are in a certain sense sufficiently close to the standard Anderson potential (rank one perturbations coupled with i.i.d. random variables).
This paper is a didactic commentary (a transcription with variations) to the paper of S.R. Foguel {\it Finite Dimensional Perturbations in Banach Spaces}. Addressed, mainly: postgraduates and related readers. Subject: Suppose we have two linear operators, A, B, so that B - A is rank one. Let λ_o be an {\it isolated} point of the spectrum of A. In addition, let λ_o be an {\it eigenvalue} of A: λ_o \in σ_{pp}(A) . The question is: Is λ_o an eigenvalue of B ? And, if so, is the multiplicity of λ_o in σ_{pp}(B) equal to the multiplicity of λ_o in σ_{pp}(A) ? -- or less? -- or greater? Keywords: M.…

In this paper the scattering matrix of a scattering system consisting of two selfadjoint operators with finite dimensional resolvent difference is expressed in terms of a matrix Nevanlinna function. The problem is embedded into an extension theoretic framework and the theory of boundary triplets and associated Weyl functions for (in general nondensely defined) symmetric operators is applied. The representation results are extended to dissipative scattering systems and an explicit solution of an inverse scattering problem for the Lax-Phillips scattering matrix is presented.
A family $H_μ(p),$ $μ>0,$ $p\in\T^3$ of the Generalized Firedrichs models with the perturbation of rank one, associated to a system of two particles, moving on the three dimensional lattice $\mathbb{\Z}^3,$ is considered. The existence or absence of the unique eigenvalue of the operator $H_μ(p)$ lying outside the essential spectrum, depending on the values of $μ>0$ and $p\in U_δ(p_{\,0})\subset\T^3$ is proven. Moreover, the analyticity of associated eigenfunction is shown.
In this paper, we investigate dispersive estimates for the time evolution of Hamiltonians $$ H=-Δ+\sum_{j=1}^N\langle\cdot\,, φ_j\rangle φ_j\quad\,\,\,\text{in}\,\,\,\mathbb{R}^d,\,\, d\ge 1, $$ where each $φ_j$ satisfies certain smoothness and decay conditions. We show that, under a spectral assumption, there exists a constant $C=C(N, d, φ_1,\ldots, φ_N)>0$ such that $$ \|e^{-itH}\|_{L^1-L^{\infty}}\leq C t^{-\frac{d}{2}}, \,\,\,\text{for}\,\,\, t>0. $$ As far as we are aware, this seems to provide the first study of $L^1-L^{\infty}$ estimates for finite rank perturbations of the Laplacian in…
A family of Friedrichs models under rank one perturbations $h_μ(p),$ $p \in (-π,π]^3$, $μ>0,$ associated to a system of two particles on the three dimensional lattice $\Z^3$ is considered. We prove the existence of a unique eigenvalue below the bottom of the essential spectrum of $h_μ(p)$ for all nontrivial values of $p$ under the assumption that $h_μ(0)$ has either a threshold energy resonance (virtual level) or a threshold eigenvalue. The threshold energy expansion for the Fredholm determinant associated to a family of Friedrichs models is also obtained.
We study the asymptotic behavior of outliers in the spectrum of bounded rank perturbations of large random matrices. In particular, we consider perturbations of elliptic random matrices which generalize both Wigner random matrices and non-Hermitian random matrices with iid entries. As a consequence, we recover the results of Capitaine, Donati-Martin, and Féral for perturbed Wigner matrices as well as the results of Tao for perturbed random matrices with iid entries. Along the way, we prove a number of interesting results concerning elliptic random matrices whose entries have finite fourth mome…
Matrix-valued measures provide a natural language for the theory of finite rank perturbations. In this paper we use this language to prove some new perturbation theoretic results. Our main result is a generalization of the Aronszajn--Donoghue theorem about the mutual singularity of the singular parts of the spectrum for rank one perturbations to the case of finite rank perturbations. Simple direct sum type examples indicate that an exact generalization is not possible. However, in this paper we introduce the notion of \emph{vector mutual singularity} for the matrix-valued measures and show tha…
We consider the generalized Anderson Model $Δ+\sum_{n\in\mathcal{N}}ω_n P_n$, where $\mathcal{N}$ is a countable set, $\{ω_n\}_{n\in\mathcal{N}}$ are i.i.d random variables and $P_n$ are rank $N<\infty$ projections. For these models we prove theorem analogous to that of Jakšić-Last on the equivalence of the trace measure $σ_n(\cdot)=tr(P_nE_{H^ω}(\cdot)P_n)$ for $n\in\mathcal{N}$ a.e $ω$. Our model covers the dimer and polymer models.
Norm resolvent approximation for a wide class of point interactions in one dimension is constructed. To analyse the limit behaviour of Schrödinger operators with localized singular rank-two perturbations coupled with δ-like potentials as the support of perturbation shrinks to a point, we show that the set of limit operators is quite rich. Depending on parameters of the perturbation, the limit operators are described by both the connected and separated boundary conditions. In particular an approximation for a four-parametric subfamily of all the connected point interactions is built. We give ex…
We consider the family $\hat h_μ:=\hat\varDelta\hat \varDelta - μ\hat v,$ $μ\in\mathbb{R}, $ of discrete Schrödinger-type operators in $d$-dimensional lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$, where $\hat \varDelta$ is the discrete Laplacian and $\hat v$ is of rank-one. We prove that there exist coupling constant thresholds $μ_o,μ^o\ge0$ such that for any $μ\in[-μ^o,μ_o]$ the discrete spectrum of $\hat h_μ$ is empty and for any $μ\in \mathbb{R}\setminus[-μ^o,μ_o]$ the discrete spectrum of $\hat h_μ$ is a singleton $\{e(μ)\},$ and $e(μ)<0$ for $μ>μ_o$ and $e(μ)>4d^2$ for $μ<-μ^o.$ Moreover, we study the asymptot…
This article is dedicated to the following class of problems. Start with an $N\times N$ Hermitian matrix randomly picked from a matrix ensemble - the reference matrix. Applying a rank-$t$ perturbation to it, with $t$ taking the values $1\le t \le N$, we study the difference between the spectra of the perturbed and the reference matrices as a function of $t$ and its dependence on the underlying universality class of the random matrix ensemble. We consider both, the weaker kind of perturbation which either permutes or randomizes $t$ diagonal elements and a stronger perturbation randomizing succe…
We study the eigenvalue trajectories of a time dependent matrix $ G_t = H+i t vv^*$ for $t \geq 0$, where $H$ is an $N \times N$ Hermitian random matrix and $v$ is a unit vector. In particular, we establish that with high probability, an outlier can be distinguished at all times $t>1+N^{-1/3+ε}$, for any $ε>0$. The study of this natural process combines elements of Hermitian and non-Hermitian analysis, and illustrates some aspects of the intrinsic instability of (even weakly) non-Hermitian matrices.
Relations between half- and full-lattice CMV operators with scalar- and matrix-valued Verblunsky coefficients are investigated. In particular, the decoupling of full-lattice CMV operators into a direct sum of two half-lattice CMV operators by a perturbation of minimal rank is studied. Contrary to the Jacobi case, decoupling a full-lattice CMV matrix by changing one of the Verblunsky coefficients results in a perturbation of twice the minimal rank. The explicit form for the minimal rank perturbation and the resulting two half-lattice CMV matrices are obtained. In addition, formulas relating the…
For a nonnegative self-adjoint operator $A_0$ acting on a Hilbert space $\mathfrak{H}$ singular perturbations of the form $A_0+V, \ V=\sum_{1}^{n}{b}_{ij}<ψ_j,\cdot>ψ_i$ are studied under some additional requirements of symmetry imposed on the initial operator $A_0$ and the singular elements $ψ_j$. A concept of symmetry is defined by means of a one-parameter family of unitary operators $\sU$ that is motivated by results due to R. S. Phillips. The abstract framework to study singular perturbations with symmetries developed in the paper allows one to incorporate physically meaningful connections…
