We discuss results of global 3D MHD simulations of accretion on to a rotating magnetized star with a tilted dipole magnetic field, where the accretion is driven by the magneto-rotational instability (MRI). The simulations show that MRI-driven turbulence develops in the disc, and angular momentum is transported outwards due primarily to the magnetic stress. The turbulent flow is strongly inhomogeneous and the densest matter is in azimuthally-stretched turbulent cells. We investigate two regimes of accretion: a magnetospheric regime and a boundary layer (BL) regime. In the magnetospheric regime, the accretion disc is truncated by the star's magnetic field within a few stellar radii from the star, and matter flows to the star in funnel streams. The funnel streams flowing towards the south and north magnetic poles but are not equal due to the inhomogeneity of the flow. In the BL regime, matter accretes to the surface of the star through the boundary layer. The magnetic field in the inner disc is strongly amplified by the shear of the accretion flow, and the matter and magnetic stresses become comparable. Accreting matter forms a belt-shaped region on the surface of the star. The belt has inhomogeneous density distribution which varies in time due to variable accretion rate. Results of simulations can be applied to classical T Tauri stars, accreting brown dwarfs, millisecond pulsars, dwarf novae cataclysmic variables, and other stars with magnetospheres smaller than several stellar radii.
We review recent axisymmetric and three-dimensional (3D) magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) numerical simulations of magnetospheric accretion, plasma-field interaction and outflows from the disk-magnetosphere boundary.
We perform numerical simulations in the close vicinity of a slowly rotating young stellar object. Using our own resistive MHD Zeus347 code in 2D axisymmetry, magnetospheric interaction experiences four robust stages in evolution. Quasi-stationary axial and conical streams of outflowing matter can last many orbital periods as results of the resistivity-facilitated magnetic reconnections. The shape of the magnetic field depends on resistivity in the magnetosphere.
We discuss the results of modelling of young magnetized stars, where matter flow is calculated using the three-dimensional (3D) magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) "Cubed Sphere" code, and the spectra are calculated using the 3D Monte Carlo radiative transfer code "TORUS". Two examples of modelling are shown: (1) accretion onto stars in stable and unstable regimes, and (2) accretion to a young star V2129 Oph, modelled with realistic parameters.
We present results of global 3D MHD simulations of disk accretion to a rotating star with dipole and more complex magnetic fields using a Godunov-type code based on the "cubed sphere" grid developed earlier in our group. We describe the code and the grid and show examples of simulation results.
Recent spectropolarimetric observations suggest that young low-mass stars such as classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs) possess relatively strong (~kG) magnetic field. This supports a scenario in which the final accretion onto the stellar surface proceeds through a magnetosphere, and the winds are formed in magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) processes. We examine recent numerical simulations of magnetospheric accretions via an inclined dipole and a complex magnetic fields. The difference between a stable accretion regime, in which accretion occurs in ordered funnel streams, and an unstable regime, in which …
We discuss basic features of steady accretion disk morphology around magnetized compact astrophysical objects. A comparison between the standard model of accretion based on visco-resistive MHD and the plasma instabilities, like ballooning modes, triggered by very low value of resistivity, is proposed.
This paper examines the outflows associated with the interaction of a stellar magnetosphere with an accretion disk. In particular, we investigate the magnetospheric ejections (MEs) due to the expansion and reconnection of the field lines connecting the star with the disk. Our aim is to study the dynamical properties of the outflows and evaluate their impact on the angular momentum evolution of young protostars. Our models are based on axisymmetric time-dependent magneto-hydrodynamic simulations of the interaction of the dipolar magnetosphere of a rotating protostar with a viscous and resistive…
We have derived the full set of MHD equations for incompressible shear flow of a magnetized fluid and considered their solution in the wave-vector space. The linearized equations give the famous amplification of slow magnetosonic waves and describe the magnetorotational instability. The nonlinear terms in our analysis are responsible for the creation of turbulence and self-sustained spectral density of the MHD (Alfven and pseudo-Alfven) waves. Perspectives for numerical simulations of weak turbulence and calculation of the effective viscosity of accretion disks are shortly discussed in k-space…
MHD waves can be responsible for plasma fluctuations and short-term variations of the pulsar emission. We consider the properties of plane and cylindrical waves that can exist in the force-free magnetosphere. Waves are considered by means of a linear analysis of the force-free MHD equations. We argue that these particular types of waves can exist in the magnetosphere of pulsars. These waves are closely related to the Alfven waves of the standard magnetohydrodynamics but are modified by the force-free condition and non-zero charge density. We derive the dispersion relation for magnetospheric wa…
We investigate magnetized solar-like stellar winds by means of self-consistent three-dimensional (3D) magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) numerical simulations. We analyze winds with different magnetic field intensities and densities as to explore the dependence on the plasma-beta parameter. By solving the fully ideal 3D MHD equations, we show that the plasma-beta parameter is the crucial parameter in the configuration of the steady-state wind. Therefore, there is a group of magnetized flows that would present the same terminal velocity despite of its thermal and magnetic energy densities, as long as t…
Effects of magnetic field on stellar differential rotation are studied by comparing magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models and their hydrodynamic (HD) counterparts in the broad range of rotation rate and in varying initial rotation profile. Fully-compressible MHD simulations of rotating penetrative convection are performed in a full-spherical shell geometry. Critical conditions for the transition of the differential rotation between faster equator (solar-type) and slower equator (anti-solar type) are explored with focusing on the "Rossby number (${\rm Ro}$)" and the "convective Rossby number (${\rm …
NGC 1624-2 is the most strongly magnetized O-type star known. Previous spectroscopic observations of this object in the ultraviolet provided evidence that it hosts a large and dense circumstellar magnetosphere. Follow-up observations obtained with the \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} not only confirm that previous inference, but also suggest that NGC 1624-2's magnetosphere has a complex structure. Furthermore, an expanded spectropolarimetric time series shows a potential departure from a dipolar magnetic field geometry, which could mean that the strongest field detected at the surface of an O-t…
Stars form in dense cores of molecular clouds that are observed to be significantly magnetized. A dynamically important magnetic field presents a significant obstacle to the formation of protostellar disks. Recent studies have shown that magnetic braking is strong enough to suppress the formation of rotationally supported disks in the ideal MHD limit. Whether non-ideal MHD effects can enable disk formation remains unsettled. We carry out a first study on how disk formation in magnetic clouds is modified by the Hall effect, the least explored of the three non-ideal MHD effects in star formation…
Context: The stellar wind and the interplanetary magnetic field modify the topology of planetary magnetospheres. Consequently, the hazardous effect of the direct exposition to the stellar wind, for example regarding the integrity of satellites orbiting the Earth or the habitability of exoplanets, depend upon the space weather conditions. Aims: The aim of the study is to analyze the response of an Earth-like magnetosphere for various space weather conditions and interplanetary coronal mass ejections. The magnetopause stand off distance, open-close field line boundary and plasma flows towards th…
Observations of jets from young stellar objects reveal the asymmetric outflows from some sources. A large set of $2.5$D MHD simulations has been carried out for axisymmetric viscous/diffusive disc accretion to rotating magnetized stars for the purpose of assessing the conditions where the outflows or jets are asymmetric relative to the equatorial plane. We consider initial magnetic fields that are symmetric about the equatorial plane and consist of a radially distributed field threading the disc (disc-field) and a stellar dipole field.({\bf 1}). For pure disc-fields the symmetry or asymmetry o…
We present a linear stability analysis of the perturbation modes in anisotropic MHD flows with velocity shear and strong magnetic field. Collisionless or weakly collisional plasma is described within the 16-momentum MHD fluid closure model, that takes into account not only the effect of pressure anisotropy, but also the effect of anisotropic heat fluxes. In this model the low frequency acoustic wave is revealed into a standard acoustic mode and higher frequency fast thermo-acoustic and lower frequency slow thermo-acoustic waves. It is shown that thermo-acoustic waves become unstable and grow e…

We investigate whether the broad wings of H2O emission identified with Herschel towards low-mass Class 0 and Class 1 protostars may be consistent with an origin in a dusty MHD disk wind, and the constraints it would set on the underlying disk properties. We present synthetic H2O line profiles predictions for a typical MHD disk wind solution with various values of disk accretion rate, stellar mass, extension of the launching area, and view angle. We compare them in terms of line shapes and intensities with the HIFI profiles observed by the WISH Key Program. We find that a dusty MHD disk wind la…
We studied roles of a turbulent resistivity in the core-collapse of a strongly magnetized massive star, carrying out 2D-resistive-MHD simulations. The three cases with different initial strengths of magnetic field and rotation are investigated; 1. strongly magnetized rotating core; 2.moderately magnetized rotating core; 3. very strongly magnetized non-rotating core. In each case, both an ideal-MHD model and resistive-MHD models are computed. As a result of computations, each model shows a matter eruption helped by a magnetic acceleration (and also by a centrifugal acceleration in the rotating …
We present the first results of a global axisymmetric simulation of accretion onto rotating magnetized stars from a turbulent, MRI-driven disk. The angular momentum is transported outward by the magnetic stress of the turbulent flow with a rate corresponding to a Shakura-Sunyaev viscosity parameter alpha\approx 0.01-0.04. The result of the disk-magnetosphere interaction depends on the orientation of the poloidal field in the disk relative to that of the star at the disk-magnetosphere boundary. If fields have the same polarity, then the magnetic flux is accumulated at the boundary and blocks th…
We present an analytical formula for the position and shape of the spots on the surface of accreting magnetized stars in cases where a star has a dipole magnetic field tilted at a small misalignment angle Theta < 30 degrees about the rotational axis, and the magnetosphere is 2.5-5 times the radius of the star. We observed that the azimuthal position of the spots varies significantly when the position of the inner disc varies. In contrast, the polar position of the spots varies only slightly because of the compression of the magnetosphere. The azimuthal width of the spots strongly varies with T…
We present results of three-dimensional numerical simulations of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wave propagation in a solar magnetic flux tube. Our study aims at understanding the properties of a range of MHD wave modes generated by different photospheric motions. We consider two scenarios observed in the lower solar photosphere, namely, granular buffeting and vortex-like motion, among the simplest mechanism for the generation of waves within a strong, localized magnetic flux concentration. We show that granular buffeting is likely to generate stronger slow and fast magnetoacoustic waves as compare…
We study the interaction of strong shock waves with magnetized clumps. Previous numerical work focused on the simplified scenario in which shocked clumps are immersed in a globally uniform magnetic field that extends through both the clump and the ambient medium. Here we consider the complementary circumstance in which the field is completely self-contained within the clumps. This could arise naturally during clump formation via dynamical or thermal instabilities for example as magnetic field pinches off from the ambient medium. Using our AMR MHD code AstroBEAR, we carry out a series of simula…
We obtained equations for a thin magnetic accretion disk, using the method of asymptotic approximation. They cannot be solved analytically-without solutions for a magnetic field in the magnetosphere between the star and the disk, only a set of general conditions on the solutions can be derived. To compare the analytical results with numerical solutions, we find expressions for physical quantities in the disk, using our results from resistive and viscous star-disk magnetospheric interaction simulations.
Magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) turbulence is ubiquitous in magnetized astrophysical plasmas, and it radically changes a great variety of astrophysical processes. In this review, we give the concept of MHD turbulence and explain the origin of its scaling. We consider the implications of MHD turbulence to various problems: dynamo in different types of stars, flare activity, solar and stellar wind from different stars, propagation of cosmic rays, and star formation. We also discuss how the properties of MHD turbulence provide a new way of tracing magnetic fields in interstellar and intracluster medi…
We report results of the first global three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the waves excited in an accretion disc by a rotating star with a dipole magnetic field misaligned from the star's rotation axis (which is aligned with the disc axis). The main results are the following: (1) If the magnetosphere of the star corotates approximately with the inner disc, then we observe a strong one-armed bending wave (a warp). This warp corotates with the star and has a maximum amplitude between corotation radius and the radius of the vertical resonance. The disc's center of mass can deviat…
Aurorae are detected from all the magnetized planets in our Solar System, including Earth. They are powered by magnetospheric current systems that lead to the precipitation of energetic electrons into the high-latitude regions of the upper atmosphere. In the case of the gas-giant planets, these aurorae include highly polarized radio emission at kilohertz and megahertz frequencies produced by the precipitating electrons, as well as continuum and line emission in the infrared, optical, ultraviolet and X-ray parts of the spectrum, associated with the collisional excitation and heating of the hydr…
This work provides a concrete implementation of E. Fermi's model of particle acceleration in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence, connecting the rate of energization to the gradients of the velocity of magnetic field lines, which it characterizes within a multifractal picture of turbulence intermittency. It then derives a transport equation in momentum space for the distribution function. This description is shown to be substantiated by a large-scale numerical simulation of strong MHD turbulence. The present, general framework can be used to model particle acceleration in a variety of environ…
Magnetic field lines in interstellar media have a rich morphology, which could be characterized by geometrical parameters such as curvature and torsion. In this paper, we explore the statistical properties of magnetic field line curvature $κ$ in compressible magnetized turbulence. We see that both the mean and standard deviation of magnetic field line curvature obey power-law relations to the magnetization. Moreover, the power-law tail of the curvature probability distribution function is also proportional to the Alfvenic Mach number. We also explore whether the curvature method could be used …

The study of the interaction between solid objects and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) fluids is of great importance in physics as consequence of the significant phenomena generated, such as planets interacting with stellar wind produced by their host stars. There are several computational tools created to simulate hydrodynamic and MHD fluids, such as the FLASH code. In this code there is a feature which permits the placement of rigid bodies in the domain to be simulated. However, it is available and tested for pure hydrodynamic cases only. Our aim here is to adapt the existing resources of FLASH to…
This chapter reviews the recent progress made mainly during the last two decades on wave turbulence in magnetized plasmas (MHD, Hall MHD and electron MHD) in the incompressible and compressible cases. The emphasis is made on homogeneous and anisotropic turbulence which usually provides the best theoretical framework to investigate space and laboratory plasmas. The interplanetary medium and the solar atmosphere are presented as two examples of media where anisotropic wave turbulence is relevant. The most important results of wave turbulence are reported and discussed in the context of space and…
We employ simulations of supersonic super-Alfvenic turbulence decay as a benchmark test problem to assess and compare the performance of nine astrophysical MHD methods actively used to model star formation. The set of nine codes includes: ENZO, FLASH, KT-MHD, LL-MHD, PLUTO, PPML, RAMSES, STAGGER, and ZEUS. We present a comprehensive set of statistical measures designed to quantify the effects of numerical dissipation in these MHD solvers. We compare power spectra for basic fields to determine the effective spectral bandwidth of the methods and rank them based on their relative effective Reynol…
The Naval Research Laboratory "Mag Noh problem", described in this paper, is a self-similar magnetized implosion flow, which contains a fast MHD outward propagating shock of constant velocity. We generalize the classic Noh (1983) problem to include azimuthal and axial magnetic fields as well as rotation. Our family of ideal MHD solutions is five-parametric, each solution having its own self-similarity index, gas gamma, magnetization, the ratio of axial to the azimuthal field, and rotation. While the classic Noh problem must have a supersonic implosion velocity to create a shock, our solutions …
We study the magnetospheric structure and the ionospheric Joule Heating of planets orbiting M-dwarf stars in the habitable zone using a set of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models. The stellar wind solution is used to drive a model for the planetary magnetosphere, which is coupled with a model for the planetary ionosphere. Our simulations reveal that the space environment around close-in habitable planets is extreme, and the stellar wind plasma conditions change from sub- to super-Alfvenic along the planetary orbit. As a result, the magnetospheric structure changes dramatically with a bow shock fo…
We recently developed a new general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic code with adaptive mesh refinement that evolves the electromagnetic (EM) vector potential (A) instead of the magnetic fields directly. Evolving A enables one to use any interpolation scheme on refinement level boundaries and still guarantee that the magnetic field remains divergenceless. As in classical EM, a gauge choice must be made when evolving A, and we chose a straightforward "algebraic" gauge condition to simplify the A evolution equation. However, magnetized black hole-neutron star (BHNS) simulations in this gauge exh…
Magnetized turbulence is ubiquitous in many astrophysical and terrestrial systems but no complete, uncontested theory even in the simplest form, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), exists. Many theories and phenomenologies focus on the joint (kinetic and magnetic) energy fluxes and spectra. We highlight the importance of treating kinetic and magnetic energies separately to shed light on MHD turbulence dynamics. We conduct an implicit large eddy simulation of subsonic, super-Alfvénic MHD turbulence and analyze the scale-wise energy transfer over time. Our key finding is that the kinetic energy spectrum…
