We present the first results of a global axisymmetric simulation of accretion onto rotating magnetized stars from a turbulent, MRI-driven disk. The angular momentum is transported outward by the magnetic stress of the turbulent flow with a rate corresponding to a Shakura-Sunyaev viscosity parameter alpha\approx 0.01-0.04. The result of the disk-magnetosphere interaction depends on the orientation of the poloidal field in the disk relative to that of the star at the disk-magnetosphere boundary. If fields have the same polarity, then the magnetic flux is accumulated at the boundary and blocks the accretion which leads to the accumulation of matter at the boundary. Subsequently, this matter accretes to the star in outburst before accumulating again. Hence, the cycling, `bursty' accretion is observed. If the disc and stellar fields have opposite polarity, then the field reconnection enhances the penetration of the disk matter towards the deeper field lines of the magnetosphere. However, the magnetic stress at the boundary is lower due to the field reconnection. This decreases the accretion rate and leads to smoother accretion at a lower rate. Test simulations show that in the case of higher accretion rate corresponding to alpha=0.05-0.1, accretion is bursty in cases of both polarities. On the other hand, at much lower accretion rates corresponding to alpha < 0.01, accretion is not bursty in any of these cases. We conclude that the episodic, bursty accretion is expected during periods of higher accretion rates in the disc, and in some cases it may alternate between bursty and smooth accretion, if the disk brings the poloidal field of alternating polarity. We find that a rotating, magnetically-dominated corona forms above and below the disk, and that it slowly expands outward, driven by the magnetic force.
We investigate the interaction of differential rotation and a misaligned magnetic field. The incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations are solved numerically for a free-decay problem. In the kinematic limit, differential rotation annihilates the non-axisymmetric field on a timescale proportional to the cube root of magnetic Reynolds number ($Rm$), as predicted by Rädler. Nonlinearly, the outcome depends upon the initial energy in the non-axisymmetric part of the field. Sufficiently weak fields approach axisymmetry as in the kinematic limit; some differential rotation survives across magneti…
Effects of magnetic field on stellar differential rotation are studied by comparing magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models and their hydrodynamic (HD) counterparts in the broad range of rotation rate and in varying initial rotation profile. Fully-compressible MHD simulations of rotating penetrative convection are performed in a full-spherical shell geometry. Critical conditions for the transition of the differential rotation between faster equator (solar-type) and slower equator (anti-solar type) are explored with focusing on the "Rossby number (${\rm Ro}$)" and the "convective Rossby number (${\rm …
In this work, we study the properties of magnetized white dwarfs taking into account possible instabilities due to electron capture and pycnonuclear fusion reactions in the cores of such objects. The structure of white dwarfs is obtained by solving the Einstein-Maxwell equations with a poloidal magnetic field in a fully general relativistic approach. The stellar interior is composed of a regular crystal lattice made of carbon ions immersed in a degenerate relativistic electron gas. The onsets of electron capture reactions and pycnonuclear reactions are determined with and without magnetic fiel…
Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves are routinely observed in the solar atmosphere. These waves are important in the context of solar physics as it is widely believed they can contribute to the energy budget of the solar atmosphere and are a prime candidate to contribute towards coronal heating. Realistic models of these waves are required representing observed configurations such that plasma properties can be determined more accurately which can not be measured directly. This work utilises a previously developed numerical technique to find permittable eigenvalues under different non-uniform equil…
Rings and gaps are being observed in an increasing number of disks around young stellar objects. We illustrate the formation of such radial structures through idealized, 2D (axisymmetric) resistive MHD simulations of coupled disk-wind systems threaded by a relatively weak poloidal magnetic field (plasma-$β\sim 10^3$). We find two distinct modes of accretion depending on the resistivity and field strength. A small resistivity or high field strength promotes the development of rapidly infalling `avalanche accretion streams' in a vertically extended disk envelope that dominates the dynamics of th…
We present a linear stability analysis of the perturbation modes in anisotropic MHD flows with velocity shear and strong magnetic field. Collisionless or weakly collisional plasma is described within the 16-momentum MHD fluid closure model, that takes into account not only the effect of pressure anisotropy, but also the effect of anisotropic heat fluxes. In this model the low frequency acoustic wave is revealed into a standard acoustic mode and higher frequency fast thermo-acoustic and lower frequency slow thermo-acoustic waves. It is shown that thermo-acoustic waves become unstable and grow e…

We investigate the possible development of magnetohydrodynamical instabilities in the EULAG-MHD "millenium simulation" of Passos & Charbonneau (2014). This simulation sustains a large-scale magnetic cycle characterized by solar-like polarity reversals taking place on a regular multidecadal cadence, and in which zonally-oriented bands of strong magnetic field accumulate below the convective layers, in response to turbulent pumping from above in successive magnetic half-cycles. Key aspects of this simulation include low numerical dissipation and a strongly subadiabatic fluid layer underlying the…
We investigate whether the broad wings of H2O emission identified with Herschel towards low-mass Class 0 and Class 1 protostars may be consistent with an origin in a dusty MHD disk wind, and the constraints it would set on the underlying disk properties. We present synthetic H2O line profiles predictions for a typical MHD disk wind solution with various values of disk accretion rate, stellar mass, extension of the launching area, and view angle. We compare them in terms of line shapes and intensities with the HIFI profiles observed by the WISH Key Program. We find that a dusty MHD disk wind la…
Our main goal in this work is to study magnetized neutron stars by using a fully general$-$relativity approach presented in the LORENE package\footnote{http://www.lorene.obspm.fr}. Here we have adopted a non-uniform magnetic field profile which depends on the baryon density. This profile has been used in many previous works and seems to be a good choice to explore maximum effects of the internal magnetic field in these objects. Equally important, the magnetic field treated here is poloidal and axisymmetric. The preliminary results show that stars endowed with a strong magnetic field will be de…
This work provides a concrete implementation of E. Fermi's model of particle acceleration in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence, connecting the rate of energization to the gradients of the velocity of magnetic field lines, which it characterizes within a multifractal picture of turbulence intermittency. It then derives a transport equation in momentum space for the distribution function. This description is shown to be substantiated by a large-scale numerical simulation of strong MHD turbulence. The present, general framework can be used to model particle acceleration in a variety of environ…
We calculate non-axisymmetric oscillations of neutron stars magnetized by purely poloidal magnetic fields. We use polytropes of index $n=1$ and 1.5 as a background model, where we ignore the equilibrium deformation due to the magnetic field. Since separation of variables is not possible for the oscillation of magnetized stars, we employ finite series expansions for the perturbations using spherical harmonic functions. Solving the oscillation equations as the boundary and eigenvalue problem, we find two kinds of discrete magnetic modes, that is, stable (oscillatory) magnetic modes and unstable …
Magnetic field lines in interstellar media have a rich morphology, which could be characterized by geometrical parameters such as curvature and torsion. In this paper, we explore the statistical properties of magnetic field line curvature $κ$ in compressible magnetized turbulence. We see that both the mean and standard deviation of magnetic field line curvature obey power-law relations to the magnetization. Moreover, the power-law tail of the curvature probability distribution function is also proportional to the Alfvenic Mach number. We also explore whether the curvature method could be used …

The study of the interaction between solid objects and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) fluids is of great importance in physics as consequence of the significant phenomena generated, such as planets interacting with stellar wind produced by their host stars. There are several computational tools created to simulate hydrodynamic and MHD fluids, such as the FLASH code. In this code there is a feature which permits the placement of rigid bodies in the domain to be simulated. However, it is available and tested for pure hydrodynamic cases only. Our aim here is to adapt the existing resources of FLASH to…
The Naval Research Laboratory "Mag Noh problem", described in this paper, is a self-similar magnetized implosion flow, which contains a fast MHD outward propagating shock of constant velocity. We generalize the classic Noh (1983) problem to include azimuthal and axial magnetic fields as well as rotation. Our family of ideal MHD solutions is five-parametric, each solution having its own self-similarity index, gas gamma, magnetization, the ratio of axial to the azimuthal field, and rotation. While the classic Noh problem must have a supersonic implosion velocity to create a shock, our solutions …
Previous axisymmetric investigations in two dimensions (2D) have shown that rings and gaps develop naturally in non-ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) disk-wind systems, especially in the presence of ambipolar diffusion (AD). Here we extend these 2D simulations to three dimensions (3D) and find that rings and gaps are still formed in the presence of a moderately strong ambipolar diffusion. The rings and gaps form from the same basic mechanism that was identified in the 2D simulations, namely, the redistribution of the poloidal magnetic flux relative to the disk material as a result of the reconne…
