We present results of three-dimensional numerical simulations of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wave propagation in a solar magnetic flux tube. Our study aims at understanding the properties of a range of MHD wave modes generated by different photospheric motions. We consider two scenarios observed in the lower solar photosphere, namely, granular buffeting and vortex-like motion, among the simplest mechanism for the generation of waves within a strong, localized magnetic flux concentration. We show that granular buffeting is likely to generate stronger slow and fast magnetoacoustic waves as compared to swirly motions. Correspondingly, the energy flux transported differs as a result of the driving motions. We also demonstrate that the waves generated by granular buffeting are likely to manifest in stronger emission in the chromospheric network. We argue that different mechanisms of wave generation are active during the evolution of a magnetic element in the intergranular lane, resulting in temporally varying emission at chromospheric heights.
We describe the presence of wavefront dislocations in magnetohydrodynamic waves in stratified stellar atmospheres. Scalar dislocations such as edges and vortices can appear in Alfvén waves, as well as in general magneto-acoustic waves. We detect those dislocations in observations of magnetohydrodynamic waves in sunspots in the solar chromosphere. Through the measured charge of all the dislocations observed, we can give for the first time estimates of the modal contribution in the waves propagating along magnetic fields in solar sunspots.
With the adaptation of the FLASH code we simulate magnetohydrodynamic-gravity waves and vortices as well as their response in the magnetized three-dimensional (3D) solar atmosphere at different heights to understand the localized energy transport processes. In the solar atmosphere strongly structured by gravitational and magnetic forces, we launch a localized velocity pulse (in horizontal and vertical components) within a bottom layer of 3D solar atmosphere modelled by initial VAL-IIIC conditions, which triggers waves and vortices. The rotation direction of vortices depends on the orientation …
We report on simulations of laboratory experiments in which magnetized supersonic flows are driven through a wire mesh. The goal of the study was to investigate the ability of such a configuration to generate supersonic, MHD turbulence. We first report on the morphological structures that develop in both magnetized and non-magnetized cases. We then analyze the flow using a variety of statistical measures, including power spectra and probability distribution functions of the density. Using these results we estimate the sonic mach number in the flows downstream of the wire mesh. We find the init…
Formation of the H$β$ $λ$4861.34 Å line is an important topic related to the diagnosis of the basic configuration of magnetic fields in the solar and stellar chromospheres. Specifically, broadening of the H$β$ $λ$4861.34 Å line occurs due to the magnetic and micro-electric fields in the solar atmosphere. The formation of H$β$ in the model umbral atmosphere is presented based on the assumption of non-local thermodynamic equilibrium. It is found that the model umbral chromosphere is transparent to the Stokes parameters of the H$β$ line, which implies that the observed signals of magnetic fields …
Interfaces between hot and cold magnetized plasmas exist in various astrophysical contexts, for example where hot outflows impinge on an ambient interstellar medium (ISM). It is of interest to understand how the structure of the magnetic field spanning the interface affects the temporal evolution of the temperature gradient. Here we explore the relation between the magnetic field topology and the heat transfer rate by adding various fractions of tangled vs. ordered field across a hot-cold interface allow the system to evolve to a steady state. We find a simple mathematical relation for the rat…
$F$-state interference significantly modifies the polarization produced by scattering processes in the solar atmosphere. Its signature in the emergent Stokes spectrum in the absence of magnetic fields is depolarization in the line core. In the present paper, we derive the partial frequency redistribution (PRD) matrix that includes interference between the upper hyperfine structure states of a two-level atom in the presence of magnetic fields of arbitrary strengths. The theory is applied to the Na I D$_2$ line that is produced by the transition between the lower $J=1/2$ and upper $J=3/2$ states…
The quantification of all possible waves and instabilities in a given system is of paramount importance, and knowledge of the full magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) spectrum allows one to predict the (in)stability of a given equilibrium state. This is highly relevant in many (astro)physical disciplines, and when applied to the solar atmosphere it may yield various new insights in processes like prominence formation and coronal loop oscillations. In this work we present a detailed, high-resolution spectroscopic study of the solar atmosphere, where we use our newly developed Legolas code to calculate th…
Observed X-ray spectra of some isolated magnetized neutron stars display absorption features, sometimes interpreted as ion cyclotron lines. Modeling the observed spectra is necessary to check this hypothesis and to evaluate neutron star parameters. We develop a computer code for modeling magnetized neutron star atmospheres in a wide range of magnetic fields (10^{12} - 10^{15} G) and effective temperatures (3 \times 10^5 - 10^7 K). Using this code, we study the possibilities to explain the soft X-ray spectra of isolated neutron stars by different atmosphere models. The atmosphere is assumed to c…
The formation of shocks within the solar atmosphere remains one of the few observable signatures of energy dissipation arising from the plethora of magnetohydrodynamic waves generated close to the solar surface. Active region observations offer exceptional views of wave behavior and its impact on the surrounding atmosphere. The stratified plasma gradients present in the lower solar atmosphere allow for the potential formation of many theorized shock phenomena. In this study, using chromospheric Ca II 854.2nm spectropolarimetric data of a large sunspot, we examine fluctuations in the plasma par…
The main aim of this submission is to investigate the effects of some parameters like wave number, shear velocity, magnetic field and temperature for the growth rate of the magnetized Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) with incessant profiles through interface of two viscous fluid layer occurred in the solar atmosphere using the model of Hoshoudy, Cavus and Mahdy (2019). In this examination, the presence of KHI is identified for the various cases of wave number, magnetic field, shear velocity and temperature in the solar atmosphere. The sensible values of these parameters were acquired.
Observations of the solar atmosphere show that internal gravity waves are generated by overshooting convection, but are suppressed at locations of magnetic flux, which is thought to be the result of mode conversion into magneto-acoustic waves. Here, we present a study of the acoustic-gravity wave spectrum emerging from a realistic, self-consistent simulation of solar (magneto-)convection. A magnetic field free, hydrodynamic simulation and a magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) simulation with an initial, vertical, homogeneous field of 50 G flux density were carried out and compared with each other to hi…
Magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) turbulence is ubiquitous in magnetized astrophysical plasmas, and it radically changes a great variety of astrophysical processes. In this review, we give the concept of MHD turbulence and explain the origin of its scaling. We consider the implications of MHD turbulence to various problems: dynamo in different types of stars, flare activity, solar and stellar wind from different stars, propagation of cosmic rays, and star formation. We also discuss how the properties of MHD turbulence provide a new way of tracing magnetic fields in interstellar and intracluster medi…
In this second paper of the series on internal gravity waves (IGWs), we present a study of the generation and propagation of IGWs in a model solar atmosphere with diverse magnetic conditions. A magnetic field free, and three magnetic models that start with an initial, vertical, homogeneous field of 10 G, 50 G, and 100 G magnetic flux density, are simulated using the CO$^{\rm 5}$BOLD code. We find that the IGWs are generated in similar manner in all four models in spite of the differences in the magnetic environment. The mechanical energy carried by IGWs is significantly larger than that of the…
Observations show various jets in the solar atmosphere with significant rotational motions, which may undergo instabilities leading to heat ambient plasma. We study the Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instability of twisted and rotating jets caused by the velocity jumps near the jet surface. We derive a dispersion equation with appropriate boundary condition for total pressure (including centrifugal force of tube rotation), which governs the dynamics of incompressible jets. Then, we obtain analytical instability criteria of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in various cases, which were verified by numerical …
We investigate magnetized solar-like stellar winds by means of self-consistent three-dimensional (3D) magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) numerical simulations. We analyze winds with different magnetic field intensities and densities as to explore the dependence on the plasma-beta parameter. By solving the fully ideal 3D MHD equations, we show that the plasma-beta parameter is the crucial parameter in the configuration of the steady-state wind. Therefore, there is a group of magnetized flows that would present the same terminal velocity despite of its thermal and magnetic energy densities, as long as t…
This chapter reviews the recent progress made mainly during the last two decades on wave turbulence in magnetized plasmas (MHD, Hall MHD and electron MHD) in the incompressible and compressible cases. The emphasis is made on homogeneous and anisotropic turbulence which usually provides the best theoretical framework to investigate space and laboratory plasmas. The interplanetary medium and the solar atmosphere are presented as two examples of media where anisotropic wave turbulence is relevant. The most important results of wave turbulence are reported and discussed in the context of space and…
We find the forms of the transfer equations for polarized cyclotron radiation in the atmospheres of compact stars, which are simple enough to allow practical implementation and still preserve all important physical effects. We take into account a frequency redistribution of radiation within the cyclotron line as well as the relativistic and quantum-electrodynamic effects. Our analysis is valid for the magnetic fields up to $10^{13}$G and for temperatures well below 500keV.} We present and compare two forms of the radiation transfer equations. The first form, for the intensities of ordinary and…
The effect of a magnetic field on the linear phase of the advective-acoustic instability is investigated, as a first step toward a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) theory of the stationary accretion shock instability taking place during stellar core collapse. We study a toy model where the flow behind a planar stationary accretion shock is adiabatically decelerated by an external potential. Two magnetic field geometries are considered: parallel or perpendicular to the shock. The entropy-vorticity wave, which is simply advected in the unmagnetized limit, separates into five different waves: the entrop…
Although barotropic matter does not constitute a realistic model for magnetic stars, it would be interesting to confirm a recent conjecture that states that magnetized stars with a barotropic equation of state would be dynamically unstable (Reisenegger 2009). In this work we construct a set of barotropic equilibria, which can eventually be tested using a stability criterion. A general description of the ideal MHD equations governing these equilibria is summarized, allowing for both poloidal and toroidal magnetic field components. A new finite-difference numerical code is developed in order to …
We present first results from three-dimensional radiation magnetohydrodynamic simulations of M-type dwarf stars with CO5BOLD. The local models include the top of the convection zone, the photosphere, and the chromosphere. The results are illustrated for models with an effective temperature of 3240 K and a gravitational acceleration of log g = 4.5, which represent analogues of AD Leo. The models have different initial magnetic field strengths and field topologies. This first generation of models demonstrates that the atmospheres of M-dwarfs are highly dynamic and intermittent. Magnetic fields a…
We present 2D magnetohydrodynamic simulations performed with the PLUTO code to model magnetized star-planet interactions. We study two simple scenarios of magnetized star-planet interactions: the unipolar and dipolar interactions. Despite the simplified hypotheses we consider in the model, the qualitative behavior of the interactions is very well recovered. These encouraging results promote further developments of the model to obtain predictions on the effect and the physical manifestation of magnetized star--close-in planet interactions.
We investigate the effects of interactions between ions and neutrals on the chromosphere and overlying corona using 2.5D radiative MHD simulations with the Bifrost code. We have extended the code capabilities implementing ion-neutral interaction effects using the Generalized Ohm's Law, i.e., we include the Hall term and the ambipolar diffusion (Pedersen dissipation) in the induction equation. Our models span from the upper convection zone to the corona, with the photosphere, chromosphere and transition region partially ionized. Our simulations reveal that the interactions between ionized parti…
Waves are observed at all layers of the solar atmosphere and the magnetic field plays a key role in their propagation. While deep down in the atmosphere the p-modes are almost entirely of acoustic nature, in the upper layers magnetic forces are dominating, leading to a large variety of new wave modes. Significant advances have been made recently in our understanding of the physics of waves interaction with magnetic structures, with the help of analytical theories, numerical simulations, as well as high-resolution observations. In this contribution, we review recent observational findings and c…
We compare non-locality of interactions between different scales in hydrodynamic (HD) turbulence and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in a strongly magnetized medium. We use 3-dimensional incompressible direct numerical simulations to evaluate non-locality of interactions. Our results show that non-locality in MHD turbulence is much more pronounced than that in HD turbulence. Roughly speaking, non-local interactions count for more than 10\% of total interactions in our MHD simulation on a grid of $512^3$ points. However, there is no evidence that non-local interactions are important in our…
We numerically study magnetic reconnection on different spatial scales and at different heights in the weakly ionized plasma of the low solar atmosphere (around $300-800$~km above the solar surface) within a reactive 2.5 D multi-fluid plasma-neutral model. We consider a strongly magnetized plasma ($β\sim 6\% $) evolving from a force-free magnetic configuration and perturbed to initialize formation of a reconnection current sheet. On large scales, the resulting current sheets are observed to undergo a secondary 'plasmoid' instability. A series of simulations at different scales demonstrate a ca…
It has recently been established that the evolution of protoplanetary disks is primarily driven by magnetized disk winds, requiring large-scale magnetic flux threading the disks. The size of such disks is expected to shrink in time, as opposed to the conventional scenario of viscous expansion. We present the first global 2D non-ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of protoplanetary disks that are truncated in the outer radius, aiming to understand the interaction of the disk with the interstellar environment, as well as global evolution of the disk and magnetic flux. We find that as the…
This work provides a concrete implementation of E. Fermi's model of particle acceleration in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence, connecting the rate of energization to the gradients of the velocity of magnetic field lines, which it characterizes within a multifractal picture of turbulence intermittency. It then derives a transport equation in momentum space for the distribution function. This description is shown to be substantiated by a large-scale numerical simulation of strong MHD turbulence. The present, general framework can be used to model particle acceleration in a variety of environ…
A subcritical transition to turbulence in magnetized Keplerian shear flows is investigated using a statistical approach. Three-dimensional numerical simulations of the shearing box equations with zero net magnetic flux are employed to determine the transition from decaying to sustained turbulence as a function of the magnetic Reynolds number Rm. The results reveal no clear transition to sustained turbulence as the average lifetime of the transients grows as an exponential function of Rm, in accordance with a type-II supertransient law.
The solar surface is covered by high-speed jets transporting mass and energy into the solar corona and feeding the solar wind. The most prominent of these jets have been known as spicules. However, the mechanism initiating these eruptions events is still unknown. Using realistic numerical simulations we find that small-scale eruptions are produced by ubiquitous magnetized vortex tubes generated by the Sun's turbulent convection in subsurface layers. The swirling vortex tubes (resembling tornadoes) penetrate into the solar atmosphere, capture and stretch background magnetic field, and push surr…
We perform nonlinear general relativistic ideal magnetohydrodynamic simulations of poloidal magnetic fields in rotating polytropic neutron stars. We have three primary goals: i) to understand the nature of magnetohydrodynamic instabilities inherent to poloidal magnetic fields in non-rotating and rotating neutron stars, ii) to explore the possible space of stable equilibrium configurations and iii) to understand gravitational wave emissions caused by the catastrophic reconfiguration of magnetic fields associated with giant magnetar flares. Our key physical contributions can be summarized as fol…
We describe a numerical scheme for magnetohydrodynamics simulations of dust-gas mixture by extending smoothed particle magnetohydrodynamics. We employ the single-species particle approach to describe dust-gas mixture with several modifications from the previous studies. We assume that the charged and neutral dusts can be treated as single-fluid and the electro-magnetic force acts on the gas and that on the charged dust is negligible. The validity of these assumption in the context of protostar formation is not obvious and is extensively evaluated. By investigating the electromagnetic force and…
The problem of three-dimensional combined magnetic and velocity shear driven instabilities of a compressible magnetized jet modeled with a plane neutral/current double vortex sheet in the framework of the resistive magnetohydrodynamics is addressed. The resulting dynamics given by the stream+current sheet interaction is analyzed and the effects of a variable geometry of the basic fields are considered. Depending on the basic asymptotic magnetic field configuration, a selection rule of the linear instability modes can be obtained. Hence, the system follows a two-stage path developing either thr…
We consider the influence of Faraday rotation in chaotic magnetic field on the intensity and linear polarization of multiple scattered radiation. All fluctuations are assumed as Gaussian type and isotropic. The values of magnetic field are less than $10^5$Gauss. In this case the parameter $ ω_B/ω=(eB/m_ec)/ω\simeq 0.93\cdot 10^{-8}λ$($μ$m)$B($G$)$ is small and the radiation scatterings are the usual scatterings on free electrons. Only the Faraday rotation influences on the intensity and polarization of radiation. We consider the Milne problem in the electron magnetized atmosphere without the m…
