Let K be a complete ultrametric field. We give lower and upper bounds for the size of linearization discs for power series over K near hyperbolic fixed points. These estimates are maximal in the sense that there exist examples where these estimates give the exact size of the corresponding linearization disc. In particular, at repelling fixed points, the linearization disc is equal to the maximal disc on which the power series is injective.
Consider a local diffeomorphism f of an ultrametric Banach space over an ultrametric field, around a hyperbolic fixed point x. We show that, locally, the system is topologically conjugate to the linearized system. An analogous result is obtained for local diffeomorphisms of real p-Banach spaces (like l^p) for 0 < p =< 1. More generally, we obtain a local linearization if f is merely a local homeomorphism which is strictly differentialble at a hyperbolic fixed point x. Also a new global version of the Grobman-Hartman theorem is provided. It applies to Lipschitz perturbations of hyperbolic autom…
We give an exposition of the theory of invariant manifolds around a fixed point, in the case of time-discrete, analytic dynamical systems over a complete ultrametric field K. Typically, we consider an analytic manifold M modelled on an ultrametric Banach space over K, an analytic self-map f of M, and a fixed point p of f. Under suitable conditions on the tangent map of f at p, we construct a centre-stable manifold, a centre manifold, respectively, an r-stable manifold around p, for a given positive real number r not exceeding 1. The invariant manifolds are useful in the theory of Lie groups ov…
We study ultrametric germs in one variable having an irrationally indifferent fixed point at the origin with a prescribed multiplier. We show that for many values of the multiplier, the cycles in the unit disk of the corresponding monic quadratic polynomial are "optimal" in the following sense: They minimize the distance to the origin among cycles of the same minimal period of normalized germs having an irrationally indifferent fixed point at the origin with the same multiplier. We also give examples of multipliers for which the corresponding quadratic polynomial does not have optimal cycles. …
Let $K$ be a complete ultrametric field of charactersitic zero whose corresponding residue field $\Bbbk$ is also of charactersitic zero. We give lower and upper bounds for the size of linearization disks for power series over $K$ near an indifferent fixed point. These estimates are maximal in the sense that there exist exemples where these estimates give the exact size of the corresponding linearization disc. Similar estimates in the remaning cases, i.e. the cases in which $K$ is either a $p$-adic field or a field of prime characteristic, were obtained in various papers on the $p$-adic case (B…
In a spherically complete ultrametric space, a strictly contracting mapping has a fixed point. We indicate in this paper how this fixed point can either be reached or approximated.
We introduce the concept of 2-cyclicity for families of one-dimensional maps with a non-hyperbolic fixed point by analogy to the cyclicity for families of planar vector fields with a weak focus. This new concept is useful in order to study the number of 2-periodic orbits that can bifurcate from the fixed point. As an application we study the 2-cyclicity of some natural families of polynomial maps.
We show that for periodic non-autonomous discrete dynamical systems, even when a common fixed point for each of the autonomous associated dynamical systems is repeller, this fixed point can became a local attractor for the whole system, giving rise to a Parrondo's dynamic type paradox.
The main purpose of this article is to study box dimension of orbits near hyperbolic and nonhyperbolic fixed points of discrete dynamical systems in higher dimensions. We generalize the known results for one-dimensional systems, that is, the orbits near the hyperbolic fixed point in one-dimensional discrete dynamical system has the box dimension equal to zero and the orbits near nonhyperbolic fixed point has positive box dimension. In the process of studying box dimensions, we use the stable, unstable and center manifolds and appropriate system restrictions. The main result is that the box dim…
We study the Gevrey character of a natural parameterization of one dimensional invariant manifolds associated to a parabolic direction of fixed points of analytic maps, that is, a direction associated with an eigenvalue equal to $1$. We show that, under general hypotheses, these invariant manifolds are Gevrey with type related to some explicit constants. We provide examples of the optimality of our results as well as some applications to celestial mechanics, namely, the Sitnikov problem and the restricted planar three body problem.
For the study of the 2-dimensional space of cubic polynomials, J. Milnor considers the complex 1-dimensional slice S_n of the cubic polynomials which have a super-attracting orbit of period n. He gives in [M4] a detailed conjectural picture of S_n. In this article, we prove these conjectures for S_1 and generalize these results in higher degrees. In particular, this gives a description of the closures of the hyperbolic components and of the Mandelbrot copies sitting in the connectedness locus. We prove that the closure of hyperbolic components is a Jordan curve, the points of which are charact…
We give formulas for the numbers of type II and type IV hyperbolic components in the space of quadratic rational maps, for all fixed periods of attractive cycles.
Let $f: S^2 \to S^2$ be a continuous map of degree $d$, $|d|>1$, and let $N_nf$ denote the number of fixed points of $f^n$. We show that if $f$ is a Thurston map with non hyperbolic orbifold, then either the growth rate inequality $\limsup \frac{1}{n} \log N_nf\geq \log |d|$ holds for $f$ or $f$ has exactly two critical points which are fixed and totally invariant.
We introduce a new technique for proving the classical Stable Manifold theorem for hyperbolic fixed points. This method is much more geometrical than the standard approaches which rely on abstract fixed point theorems. It is based on the convergence of a canonical sequence of ``finite time local stable manifolds'' which are related to the dynamics of a finite number of iterations.
We show the hyperbolicity of the Feigenbaum fixed point using the inflexibility of the Feigenbaum tower, the Mane-Sad-Sullivan $λ$-Lemma and the existence of parabolic domains (petals) for semi-attractive fixed points.
The period doubling renormalization operator was introduced by M. Feigenbaum and by P. Coullet and C. Tresser in the nineteen-seventieth to study the asymptotic small scale geometry of the attractor of one-dimensional systems which are at the transition from simple to chaotic dynamics. This geometry turns out to not depend on the choice of the map under rather mild smoothness conditions. The existence of a unique renormalization fixed point which is also hyperbolic among generic smooth enough maps plays a crucial role in the corresponding renormalization theory. The uniqueness and hyperbolicit…
We prove that for a certain class of closed monotone symplectic manifolds any Hamiltonian diffeomorphism with a hyperbolic fixed point must necessarily have infinitely many periodic orbits. Among the manifolds in this class are complex projective spaces, some Grassmannians, and also certain product manifolds such as the product of a projective space with a symplectically aspherical manifold of low dimension. A key to the proof of this theorem is the fact that the energy required for a Floer connecting trajectory to approach an iterated hyperbolic orbit and cross its fixed neighborhood is bound…
This article focus on the connected locus of the cubic polynomial slice $Per_1(λ)$ with a parabolic fixed point of multiplier $λ=e^{2πi\frac{p}{q}}$. We first show that any parabolic component, which is a parallel notion of hyperbolic component, is a Jordan domain. Moreover, a continuum $\mathcal{K}_λ$ called the central part in the connected locus is defined. This is the natural analogue to the closure of the main hyperbolic component of $Per_1(0)$. We prove that $\mathcal{K}_λ$ is almost a double covering of the filled-in Julia set of the quadratic polynomial $P_λ(z) = λz+z^2$.
We give normal forms for strongly hyperbolic logarithmic transseries f = z^r + ... (r is a positive real number nonequal to 1), with respect to parabolic logarithmic normalizations. These normalizations are obtained using fixed point theorems, and are given algorithmically, as limits of Picard sequences in appropriate formal topologies. The results are applied to describe the supports of normalizations and to prove that the strongly hyperbolic complex Dulac germs are analytically normalizable on standard quadratic domains inside the class of complex Dulac germs.
Let G be a compact Lie group and X be a compact smooth G-manifold with finitely many G-fixed points. We show that if X admits a G-equivariant hyperbolic diffeomorphism having a certain convergence property, there exists an open covering of X indexed by the G-fixed points so that each open set is G-stable and G-equivariantly diffeomorphic to the tangential G-representation at the corresponding G-fixed point. We also show that the converse is also true in case of holomorphic torus actions
Exploiting a relationship between closed geodesics on a generic closed hyperbolic surface S and a certain unipotent flow on the product space T_1(S) x T_1(S), we obtain a local asymptotic equidistribution result for long closed geodesics on S. Applications include asymptotic estimates for the number of pants immersions into S satisfying various geometric constraints. Also we show that two uniformly random closed geodesics gamma_1, gamma_2 of length within epsilon of L have a high probability of partially bounding an immersed 4-holed sphere whose other boundary components also have length withi…
We prove structural stability under perturbations for a class of discrete-time dynamical systems near a non-hyperbolic fixed point. We reformulate the stability problem in terms of the well-posedness of an infinite-dimensional nonlinear ordinary differential equation in a Banach space of carefully weighted sequences. Using this, we prove existence and regularity of flows of the dynamical system which obey mixed initial and final boundary conditions. The class of dynamical systems we study, and the boundary conditions we impose, arise in a renormalisation group analysis of the 4-dimensional wea…
This paper contains some more results on the topology of a nondegenerate action of $\mathbb{R}^n$ on a compact connected $n$-manifold $M$ when the action is totally hyperbolic (i.e. its toric degree is zero). We study the $\mathbb{R}$-action generated by a fixed vector of $\mathbb{R}^n$, that provides some results on the number of hyperbolic domains and the number of fixed points of the action. We study with more details the case of the 2-sphere, in particular we investigate some combinatorial properties of the associated 4-valent graph embedded in $S^2$. We also construct hyperbolic actions i…
We prove that a Hamiltonian $p\in C^\infty(T^*{\bf R}^n)$ is locally integrable near a non-degenerate critical point $ρ_0$ of the energy, provided that the fundamental matrix at $ρ_0$ has no purely imaginary eigenvalues. This is done by using Birkhoff normal forms, which turn out to be convergent in the $C^\infty$ sense. We also give versions of the Lewis-Sternberg normal form near a hyperbolic fixed point of a canonical transformation. Then we investigate the almost holomorphic case.
