The twisted torus knots lie on the standard genus 2 Heegaard surface for $S^3$, as do the primitive/primitive and primitive/Seifert knots. It is known that primitive/primitive knots are fibered, and that not all primitive/Seifert knots are fibered. Since there is a wealth of primitive/Seifert knots that are twisted torus knots, we consider the twisted torus knots to partially answer the question of which primitive/Seifert knots are fibered. A braid computation shows that a particular family of twisted torus knots is fibered, and that computation is then used to generalize the results of a previous paper by the author.
We define the surface complex for $3$-manifolds and embark on a case study in the arena of Seifert fibered spaces. The base orbifold of a Seifert fibered space captures some of the topology of the Seifert fibered space, so, not surprisingly, the surface complex of a Seifert fibered space always contains a subcomplex isomorphic to the curve complex of the base orbifold.
A Heegaard splitting of a $3$-manifold is flippable if there is an isotopy that interchanges the two sides of the Heegaard splitting. We explore which Heegaard splittings of Seifert fibered spaces are flippable.
Suppose $α$ and $R$ are disjoint simple closed curves in the boundary of a genus two handlebody $H$ such that $H[R]$ embeds in $S^3$ as the exterior of a hyperbolic knot $k$(thus, $k$ is a tunnel-number-one knot), and $α$ is Seifert in $H$(i.e., a 2-handle addition $H[α]$ is a Seifert-fibered space) and not the meridian of $H[R]$. Then for a slope $γ$ of $k$ represented by $α$, $γ$-Dehn surgery $k(γ)$ is a Seifert-fibered space. Such a construction of Seifert-fibered Dehn surgeries generalizes that of Seifert-fibered Dehn surgeries arising from primtive/Seifert positions of a knot, which was i…
In this paper, we define the primitive/Seifert-fibered property for a knot in S^3. If satisfied, the property ensures that the knot has a Dehn surgery that yields a small Seifert-fibered space (i.e. base S^2 and three or fewer critical fibers). Next we describe the twisted torus knots, which provide an abundance of examples of primitive/Seifert-fibered knots. By analyzing the twisted torus knots, we prove that nearly all possible triples of multiplicities of the critical fibers arise via Dehn surgery on primitive/Seifert-fibered knots.
We examine surgery on a knot in $S^3$ to determine surgery obstructions to Seifert fibered integral homology spheres. We find such surgery obstructions using Heegaard Floer, Knot Floer homology and the mapping cone formula for computing Heegaard Floer homology of surgery on a knot. Here however, we take a different approach and use the number of singular fibers of a Seifert fibered integral homology sphere, which is the toroidal structure, to find obstructions. This approach allows us to show that genus one knots cannot yield Seifert fibered integral homology spheres with six or more singular …
One measure of the complexity of a 3-manifold is its triangulation complexity: the minimal number of tetrahedra in a triangulation of it. A natural question is whether we can relate this quantity to its topology. We determine the triangulation complexity of Seifert fibered spaces with non-empty boundary in terms of their Seifert data, up to a multiplicative constant. We also show that all singular fibres of such a Seifert fibered space (aside from those of multiplicity two) can be made simplicial in the 79th barycentric subdivision of any triangulation of it.
We study spanning sets for the Kauffman bracket skein module $\mathcal{S}(M,\mathbb{Q}(A))$ of orientable Seifert fibered spaces with orientable base and non-empty boundary. As a consequence, we show that the KBSM of such manifolds is a finitely generated $\mathcal{S}(\partial M, \mathbb{Q}(A))$-module.
We establish an inequality which gives strong restrictions on when the standard definite plumbing intersection lattice of a Seifert fibered space over $S^2$ can embed into a standard diagonal lattice, and give two applications. First, we answer a question of Neumann-Zagier on the relationship between Donaldson's theorem and Fintushel-Stern's $R$-invariant. We also give a short proof of the characterisation of Seifert fibered spaces which smoothly bound rational homology $S^1 \times D^3$'s.
We study small Seifert possibly chiral cosmetic surgeries on not necessarily null-homologous knot in rational homology spheres. Using $PSL_2(\mathbb{C})$-character variety theory we give a sharp bound on the number of slopes producing the same small Seifert manifold if the ambient manifold satisfies some representation theoretic conditions.
Let $\barγ$ be a link in a Seifert fibered space $M$ over a hyperbolic $2$-orbifolds $\mathcal O$ that projects injectively to a filling multicurve of closed geodesics $γ$ in $\mathcal O.$ We prove that the complement $M_{\barγ}$ of $\barγ$ in $M$ admits a hyperbolic structure of finite volume and give combinatorial bounds of its volume.
Using an obstruction based on Donaldson's theorem, we derive strong restrictions on when a Seifert fibered space $Y = F(e; \frac{p_1}{q_1}, \ldots, \frac{p_k}{q_k})$ over an orientable base surface $F$ can smoothly embed in $S^4$. This allows us to classify precisely when $Y$ smoothly embeds provided $e > k/2$, where $e$ is the normalized central weight and $k$ is the number of singular fibers. Based on these results and an analysis of the Neumann-Siebenmann invariant $\overlineμ$, we make some conjectures concerning Seifert fibered spaces which embed in $S^4$. Finally, we also provide some ap…
It is well known that, among closed spherical Seifert three-manifolds, only lens spaces and prism manifolds admit several Seifert fibrations which are not equivalent up to diffeomorphism. Moreover the former admit infinitely many fibrations, and the latter exactly two. In this work, we analyse the non-uniqueness phenomenon for orbifold Seifert fibrations. For any closed spherical Seifert three-orbifold, we determine the number of its inequivalent fibrations. When these are in a finite number (in fact, at most three) we provide a complete list. In case of infinitely many fibrations, we describe…
The Ozsvath-Szabo contact invariant is a complete classification invariant for tight contact structures on small Seifert fibered 3-manifolds which are L-spaces.
We present relations in the mapping class monoid of $S_{0,0}^n$ between products of boundary parallel twists and those involving only non boundary parallel twists. These are of particular interest because each element gives an open book decomposition of a contact 3-manifold, and different factorizations of the same mapping class give potentially distinct symplectic fillings with diffeomorphic boundaries. We apply these results in order to compute the Euler characteristics of fillings resulting from different factorizations, present plumbing graphs for the fillings given by products of boundary…
In this paper we provide the classification of tight contact structures on some small Seifert fibered manifolds. As an application of this classification, combined with work of Lekili in \cite{L2010}, we obtain infinitely many counterexamples to a question of Honda-Kazez-Matić that asks whether a right-veering, non-destabilizable open book necessarily supports a tight contact structure.
