Adsorption of $O_{2}$ molecule on Al surface has been a long standing puzzle for the first principles calculation. We have studied the adsorption of $O_{2}$ molecule on the Al(111) surface using hybrid functionals. In contrast to the previous LDA/GGA, the present calculations with hybrid functionals successfully predict that $O_{2}$ molecule can be absorbed on the Al(111) surface with a barrier around 0.2$\thicksim$0.4 eV, which is in good agreement with experiments. Our calculations predict that the LUMO of $O_{2}$ molecule is higher than the Fermi level of the Al(111) surface, which is responsible for the barrier of the $O_{2}$ adsorption.
The shortcomings of semi-local and hybrid functionals: what we can learn from surface science studies
A study of the adsorption of CO on late 4d and $5d$ transition metal (111) surfaces (Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, Os, Ir, and Pt) considering atop and hollow site adsorption is presented. The applied functionals include the gradient corrected PBE and BLYP functional, and the corresponding hybrid Hartree-Fock density functionals HSE and B3LYP. We find that PBE based hybrid functionals (specifically HSE) yield, with the exception of Pt, the correct site order on all considered metals, but they also considerably overestimate the adsorption energies compared to experiment. On the other hand, the semi-local BLY…
Application of van der Waals Density Functional to an Extended System: Adsorption of Benzene and Naphthalene on Graphite
它表明,它现在是可能的,包括范德华相互作用,通过非经验的实施密度泛函理论来描述在电子结构计算中的相关能无限系统的没有特定的对称性。vdW-DF泛函[Phys. Rev. Lett. 92,246401(2004)]应用于苯和萘在无限石墨片上的吸附,以及两个石墨片之间的结合。与最近的热脱附数据[Phys.Rev.B69,535406(2004)]的比较显示了vdW-DF方法的巨大前景。
Density functional study of the adsorption of K on the Ag(111) surface
Comparative Density Functional Theory and Density Functional Tight Binding Study of Arginine and Arginine-Rich Cell-Penetrating Peptide TAT Adsorption on Anatase TiO2
We provide a general thermodynamic framework for the understanding of guest-induced structural transitions in hybrid organic-inorganic materials. The method is based on the analysis of experimental adsorption isotherms. It allows the determination of the free energy differences between host structures involved in guest-induced transitions, especially hard to obtain experimentally. We discuss the general case of adsorption in flexible materials and show how a few key quantities, such as pore volumes and adsorption affinities, entirely determine the phenomenology of adsorption, including the occ…
We perform first-principles calculations of electronic and dielectric properties of bismuthene functionalized with small ligands using first-principle calculations. We show that all functionalized structures have topological insulating (TI) behavior with a sizeable gap by calculating the Z$_2$ topological invariant. Furthermore the adsorption of all groups induce a quasi-planar structure to the initially pristine bismuthene structure. Finally we show that the dielectric properties show a large anisotropy with two main in plane absorption peaks.
Adsorption of the molecule CO on metallic surfaces is an important unsolved problem in Kohn-Sham density functional theory (KS-DFT). We present a detailed study of carbon monoxide adsorption on fcc (111) surfaces of 3d, 4d and 5d metals using nonempirical semilocal density functionals for the exchange-correlation energy: the local-density approximation (LDA), two generalized gradient approximations or GGAs (PBE and PBEsol), and a meta-GGA (SCAN). The typical error pattern (as found earlier for free molecules and for free transition metal surfaces), in which results improve from LDA to PBE or P…
Adsorption of carbon monoxide (CO) on transition-metal surfaces is a prototypical process in surface sciences and catalysis. Despite its simplicity, it has posed great challenges to theoretical modeling. Pretty much all existing density functionals fail to accurately describe surface energies, CO adsorption site preference, as well as adsorption energies simultaneously. Although the random phase approximation (RPA) cures these density functional theory failures, its large computational cost makes it prohibitive to study the CO adsorption for any but the simplest ordered cases. Here, we address…

In this paper, we investigate the adsorption of water monomer on fluorinated graphene using state-of-the-art first principles methods within the framework of density functional theory (DFT). Four different methods are employed to describe the interactions between water and the carbon surface: The traditional DFT calculations within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA), and three types of calculations using respectively the semi-empirical DFT-D2method, the original van der Waals density functional (vdW-DF) method, and one of its variants. Compared with the adsorption on pristine graphen…
The structure of the double-layer formed at the surface of carbon electrodes is governed by the interactions between the electrode and the electrolyte species. However, carbon is notoriously difficult to simulate accurately, even with well-established methods such as electronic Density Functional Theory and Molecular Dynamics. Here we focus on the important case of a lithium ion in contact with the surface of graphite, and we perform a series of reference Quantum Monte Carlo calculations that allow us to benchmark various electronic Density Functional Theory functionals. We then fit an accurat…
Starting from the planar molecule 1,3,5-trihydroxybenzene, Du et al. reported synthesizing one of a couple of possible 2D materials: graphenylene or 3-carbophene. 3-carbophene is a member of a novel class of two-dimensional covalent organic framework, [N]-carbophenes (carbophenes). Using a high throughput method, we computed the formation energies and conduction properties of 3-, 4-, 5-, and 6-carbophenes with hydroxyl (OH), carbonyl (CO), nitro (NO$_2$), amine (NH$_2$), carboxyl (COOH) functional groups replacing hydrogen terminating agents. Five hundred and nine structures with randomly pick…
The understanding of atomic adsorption on graphene is of high importance for many advanced technologies. Here we present a complete database of the atomic adsorption energies for the elements of the Periodic Table up to the atomic number 86 (excluding lanthanides) on pristine graphene. The energies have been calculated using the projector augmented wave (PAW) method with PBE, long-range dispersion interaction corrected PBE (PBE+D2, PBE+D3) as well as non-local vdW-DF2 approach. The inclusion of dispersion interactions leads to an exothermic adsorption for all the investigated elements. Dispers…
Semi-local density functional approximations are widely used. None of them can capture the long-range van der Waals (vdW) attraction between separated subsystems, but they differ remarkably in the extent to which they capture intermediate-range vdW effects responsible for equilibrium bonds between neighboring small closed-shell subsystems. The local density approximation (LDA) often overestimates this effect, while the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) generalized gradient approximation (GGA) underestimates it. The strongly-constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) meta-GGA often estimates it wel…
Two-dimensional materials composed of transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) are poised to revolutionize energy conversion and storage. In this work, we used density functional theory (DFT) to investigate adsorption of Mg and Na adatoms on five M$_{2}$CS$_{2}$ monolayers (where M= Mo, Nb, Ti, V, Zr) for battery applications. We assessed the stability of the adatom (i.e. Na and Mg)-monolayer systems by calculating adsorption and formation energies, as well as voltages as a function of surface coverage. For instance, we found that Mo$_{2}$CS$_{2}$ cannot support a full layer of Na nor e…
In this work we investigate the electronic properties of mercaptocarboxylic acids with several carbon chain lengths adsorbed on ZnO-(10-10) surfaces via density functional theory calculations using semi-local and hybrid exchange-correlation functionals. Amongst the investigated structures, we identify the monodentate adsorption mode to be stable. Moreover, this mode introduces optically active states in the ZnO gap, is further confirmed by the calculation of the dielectric function at PBE0 and TD-PBE0 levels. One interesting finding is that adsorption mode and the dielectric properties of the …
