We establish the general phonon dynamics of magnetic solids by incorporating the Mead-Truhlar correction in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. The effective magnetic-field acting on the phonons naturally emerges, giving rise to the phonon Hall effect. A general formula of the intrinsic phonon Hall conductivity is obtained by using the corrected Kubo formula with the energy magnetization contribution incorporated properly. The resulting phonon Hall conductivity is fully determined by the phonon Berry curvature and the dispersions. Based on the formula, the topological phonon system could be rigorously defined. In the low temperature regime, we predict that the phonon Hall conductivity is proportional to $T^{3}$ for the ordinary phonon systems, while that for the topological phonon systems has the linear $T$ dependence with the quantized temperature coefficient.
We discuss the anomalous Hall effect in a two-dimensional electron gas subject to a spatially varying magnetization. This topological Hall effect (THE) does not require any spin-orbit coupling, and arises solely from Berry phase acquired by an electron moving in a smoothly varying magnetization. We propose an experiment with a structure containing 2D electrons or holes of diluted magnetic semiconductor subject to the stray field of a lattice of magnetic nanocylinders. The striking behavior predicted for such a system (of which all relevant parameters are well known) allows to observe unambiguo…
Since the discovery of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE), the anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) has been thought to be zero when there is no net magnetization. However, the recently found relation between the intrinsic AHE and the Berry curvature predicts other possibilities, such as a large AHC in non-colinear antiferromagnets with no net magnetization but net Berry curvature. Vice versa, the AHE in principle could be tuned to zero, irrespective of a finite magnetization. Here, we experimentally investigate this possibility and demonstrate that, the symmetry elements of Heusler magnets can be c…
Berry curvature plays a crucial role in exotic electronic states of quantum materials, such as intrinsic anomalous Hall effect. As Berry curvature is highly sensitive to subtle changes of electronic band structures, it can be finely tuned via external stimulus. Here, we demonstrate in SrRuO3 thin films that both the magnitude and sign of anomalous Hall resistivity can be effectively controlled with epitaxial strain. Our first-principles calculations reveal that epitaxial strain induces an additional crystal field splitting and changes the order of Ru d orbital energies, which alters the Berry …
The anomalous transport properties of Heusler compounds become a hotspot of research in recent years due to their unique band structure and possible application in spintronics. In this paper, we report the anomalous Hall effect in polycrystalline NiCoMnGa quaternary Heusler compound by experimental means and theoretical calculations. The experimental anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) was found at about 256 S/cm at 10K with an intrinsic contribution of ~ 121 S/cm. The analysis of Hall data reveals the presence of both extrinsic and intrinsic contributions in AHE. Our theoretical calculations sh…
The topological Hall effect (THE) is one of the key signatures of topologically non-trivial magnetic spin textures, wherein electrons feel an additional transverse voltage to the applied current. The magnitude of THE is often small compared to the anomalous Hall effect. Here, we find a large THE of 0.9 $μΩ$cm that is of the same order of the anomalous Hall effect in the single crystalline antiskyrmion hosting Heusler compound Mn$_{1.4}$PtSn, a non-centrosymmetric tetragonal compound. The THE is highly anisotropic and survives in the whole temperature range where the spin structure is noncoplan…
Co2-based Heusler compounds are the promising materials for the spintronics application due to their high Curie temperature, large spin-polarization, large magnetization density, and exotic transport properties. In the present manuscript, we report the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in a polycrystalline Co2FeAl Heusler compound using combined experimental and theoretical studies. The Rietveld analysis of high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction data reveals a large degree (~50 %) of antisite disorder between Fe and Al atoms. The analysis of anomalous transport data provides the experimental …
In this study, we implemented a finite-difference algorithm for computing anomalous Hall and Nernst conductivity. Based on the expression to evaluate the Berry curvature in an insulating system [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 74 1674(2005)], we extended the methods to a metallic system. We calculated anomalous Hall conductivity and Nernst conductivity in a two-dimensional ferromagnetic material FeCl$_2$ and three-dimensional ferromagnetic transition metals bcc-Fe, hcp-Co, and fcc-Ni. Our results are comparable to previously reported results computed by Kubo-formula or Wannier representation. To evaluate a…

Berry curvature (BC) governs topological phases of matter and generates anomalous transport. When a magnetic field is applied, phonons can acquire BC indirectly through spin-lattice coupling, leading to a linear phonon Hall effect. Here, we show that polar lattice distortion directly couples to a phonon BC dipole, which causes a switchable non-linear phonon Hall effect. In a SnS monolayer, the in-plane ferroelectricity induces a phonon BC and leads to the phononic version of the non-volatile BC memory effect. As a new type of ferroelectricity-phonon coupling, the phonon Rashba effect emerges a…
Under the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, the electronic ground state evolves adiabatically and can accumulate geometrical phases characterized by the molecular Berry curvature. In this work, we study the effect of the molecular Berry curvature on the lattice dynamics in a system with broken time-reversal symmetry. The molecular Berry curvature is formulated based on the single-particle electronic Bloch states. It manifests as a non-local effective magnetic field in the equations of motion of the ions that are beyond the widely adopted Raman spin-lattice coupling model. We employ the Bogoliubo…
Magnetic Weyl semimetals with spontaneously broken time-reversal symmetry exhibit a large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect originating from the Berry curvature. To employ this large Hall current for room temperature topo-spintronics applications, it is necessary to fabricate these materials as thin or ultrathin films. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that Weyl semimetal Co2MnGa thin films (20-50 nm) show a very large anomalous Hall angle ~11.4% at low temperature and ~9.7% at room temperature, which can be ascribed to the nontrivial topology of the band structure with large intrinsic Berry c…
Electron-phonon scatterings in solid-state systems are pivotal processes in determining many key physical quantities such as charge carrier mobilities and thermal conductivities. Here, we report on the direct probing of phonon mode specific electron-phonon scatterings in layered semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides WSe2, MoSe2, WS2, and MoS2 through inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy measurements, quantum transport simulations, and density functional calculation. We experimentally and theoretically characterize momentum-conserving single- and two-phonon electron-phonon scatte…
In two-dimensional insulators with time-reversal (TR) symmetry, a nonzero local Berry curvature of low-energy massive Dirac fermions can give rise to nontrivial spin and charge responses, even though the integral of the Berry curvature over all occupied states is zero. In this work, we present a new effect induced by the electronic Berry curvature. By studying electron-phonon interactions in BaMnSb$_2$, a prototype two-dimensional Dirac material possessing two TR-related massive Dirac cones, we find that the nonzero local Berry curvature of electrons can induce a phonon angular momentum. The d…
The topological quantum states in two-dimensional (2D) materials are fascinating subjects of research, which usually highlight electron-related systems. In this work, we present a recipe that leads to Dirac phonon states with quantized valley Berry phase in 2D hexagonal lattices by first-principles calculations. We show that candidates possessing the three-fold rotational symmetry at the corners of the hexagonal Brillouin zone host valley Dirac phonons, which are guaranteed to remain intact with respect to perturbations. We identify that such special topological features populated by Dirac pho…
Oxide materials exhibit several novel structural, magnetic, and electronic properties. Their stability under ambient conditions, easy synthesis, and high transition temperatures provide such systems with an ideal ground for realizing topological properties and real-life technological applications. However, experimental evidence of topological states in oxide materials is rare. In this study, we have synthesized single crystals of oxide double perovskite Sr2FeMoO6 and revealed its topological nature by investigating its structural, magnetic, and electronic properties. We observed that the syste…
Spin gapless semiconductors exhibit a finite band gap for one spin channel and closed gap for other spin channel, emerged as a new state of magnetic materials with a great potential for spintronic applications. The first experimental evidence for the spin gapless semiconducting behavior was observed in an inverse Heusler compound Mn2CoAl. Here, we report a detailed investigation of the crystal structure and anomalous Hall effect in the Mn2CoAl using experimental and theoretical studies. The analysis of the high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction data shows anti-site disorder between Mn a…
Phonons as collective excitations of lattice vibrations are the main heat carriers in solids. Tremendous effort has been devoted to investigate phonons and related properties, giving rise to an intriguing field of phononics, which is of great importance to many practical applications, including heat dissipation, thermal barrier coating, thermoelectrics and thermal control devices. Meanwhile, the research of topology-related physics, awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physics, has led to discoveries of various exotic quantum states of matter, including the quantum (anomalous/spin) Hall [Q(A/S)H] e…
Berry curvatures are computed for a set of Heusler compounds using density functional (DF) calculations and the wave functions that DF provide. The anomalous Hall conductivity is obtained from the Berry curvatures. It is compared with experimental values in the case of Co$_2$CrAl and Co$_2$MnAl. A notable trend cannot be seen but the range of values is quite enormous. The results for the anomalous Hall conductivities and their large variations can be qualitatively understood by means of the band structure and the Fermi-surface topology.
A mechanism for phonon Hall effect (PHE) in non-magnetic insulators under an external magnetic field is theoretically studied. PHE is known in (para)magnetic compounds, where the magnetic moments and spin-orbit interaction play an essential role. In sharp contrast, we here show that a non-zero Berry curvature of acoustic phonons is induced by an external magnetic field due to the correction to the adiabatic Born-Oppenheimer approximation. This results in the finite thermal Hall conductivity $κ_H$ in nonmagnetic band insulators. Our estimate of $κ_H$ for a simple model gives $κ_H \sim 1.0\times…
The intrinsic spin Hall conductivity and the anomalous Hall conductivity of ferromagnetic L1$_0$-CoPt are studied using first principle calculations of the spin Berry and Berry curvatures, respectively. We find that the Berry curvature and the spin Berry curvature exhibit different symmetry with respect to that of the band structure. The Berry curvature preserves the $C_{4v}$ crystal rotation symmetry along the c-axis whereas the symmetry of the spin Berry curvature reduces to $C_{2v}$. Contributions to the Berry curvature and the spin Berry curvature are classified by the spin character of ba…
Berry phase and Berry curvature play a key role in the development of topology in physics and do contribute to the transport properties in solid state systems. In this paper, we report the finding of novel nonzero Hall effect in topological material ZrTe5 flakes when in-plane magnetic field is parallel and perpendicular to the current. Surprisingly, both symmetric and antisymmetric components with respect to magnetic field are detected in the in-plane Hall resistivity. Further theoretical analysis suggests that the magnetotransport properties originate from the anomalous velocity induced by Be…
The anomalous Hall conductivity of "dirty" ferromagnetic metals is dominated by a Berry-phase contribution which is usually interpreted as an intrinsic property of the Bloch electrons in the pristine crystal. In this work we evaluate the geometric Hall current directly from the electronic ground state with disorder, and then recast it as an integral over the crystalline Brillouin zone. The integrand is a generalized k-space Berry curvature, obtained by unfolding the Berry curvature from the small Brillouin zone of a large supercell. Therein, disorder yields a net extrinsic Hall contribution, w…
Recently it has been suggested that the complicated temperature dependence of the extraordinary Hall effect (EHE) in the itinerant ferromagnet SrRuO3 could be explained by the Berry phase effect in the crystal momentum space. We test this model by measurements of EHE as a function of an applied magnetic field at a constant temperature and show that the results seem to contradict the Berry phase mechanism.
Various Co2 based Heusler compounds are predicted to be Weyl materials. These systems with broken symmetry possess a large Berry curvature, and introduce exotic transport properties. The present study on epitaxially grown Co2TiSn films is an initial approach to understand and explore this possibility. The anomalous Hall effect in the well-ordered Co2TiSn films has been investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The measured Hall conductivity is in good agreement to the calculated Berry curvature. Small deviations between them are due to the influence of skew scattering on the Hall eff…
The electronic topology is generally related to the Berry curvature, which can induce the anomalous Hall effect in time-reversal symmetry breaking systems. Intrinsic monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides possesses two nonequivalent K and K' valleys, having Berry curvatures with opposite signs, and thus vanishing anomalous Hall effect in this system. Here we report the experimental realization of asymmetrical distribution of Berry curvature in a single valley in monolayer WSe2 through applying uniaxial strain to break C3v symmetry. As a result, although the Berry curvature itself is still …

The spin Hall effect is investigated in a high mobility two dimensional electron system with the spin-orbital coupling of both the Rashba and the Dresselhaus types. A spin current perpendicular to the electric field is generated by either the Rashba or the Dresselhaus coupling. The spin Hall conductance is independent of the stength of the coupling, but its sign is determined by the relative ratio of the two couplings. The direction of spin current is controllable by tuning the magnitude of the surface electric field perpendicular to the two dimensional plane via adjusting the Rashba coupling.…
The Berry phase understanding of electronic properties has attracted special interest in condensed matter physics, leading to phenomena such as the anomalous Hall effect and the topological Hall effect. A non-vanishing Berry phase, induced in momentum space by the band structure or in real space by a non-coplanar spin structure, is the origin of both effects. Here, we report a sign conversion of the anomalous Hall effect and a large topological Hall effect in (Cr0.9B0.1)Te single crystals. The spin reorientation from an easy-axis structure at high temperature to an easy-cone structure below 14…
Various nonlinear characteristics of solid states, such as the circular photogalvanic effect of time-reversal symmetric insulators, the quantized photogalvanic effect of Weyl semimetals, and the nonlinear Hall effect of time-reversal symmetric metals, have been associated with the Berry curvature dipole (BCD). Here, we explore the question of whether the Berry curvature dipole and multipoles of time-reversal symmetric insulators can be traced in the nonlinear optical responses. We performed real-time time-dependent density functional theory calculations and examined the second harmonic generat…
We carry out a detailed analysis of the short-wave (semiclassical) approximation for the linear equations of the elasticity in a smoothly inhomogeneous isotropic medium. It is shown that the polarization properties of the transverse waves are completely analogous to those of electromagnetic waves and can be considered as spin properties of optical phonons. In particular, the Hamiltonian of the transverse waves contains an additional term of the phonon spin-orbit interaction arising from the Berry gauge potential in the momentum space. This potential is diagonal in the basis of the circularly p…
One big achievement in modern condensed matter physics is the recognition of the importance of various band geometric quantities in physical effects. As prominent examples, Berry curvature and the Berry curvature dipole are connected to the linear and the second-order Hall effects, respectively. Here, we show that the Berry connection polarizability (BCP) tensor, as another intrinsic band geometric quantity, plays a key role in the third-order Hall effect. Based on the extended semiclassical formalism, we develop a theory for the third-order charge transport and derive explicit formulas for th…
During the past two decades, it has been established that a non-trivial electron wave-function topology generates an anomalous Hall effect (AHE), which shows itself as a Hall conductivity non-linear in magnetic field. Here, we report on an unprecedented case of field-linear AHE. In Mn$_3$Sn, a kagome magnet, the out-of-plane Hall response, which shows an abrupt jump, was discovered to be a case of AHE. We find now that the in-plane Hall response, which is perfectly linear in magnetic field, is set by the Berry curvature of the wavefunction. The amplitude of the Hall response and its concomitan…
We report an experimental and computational study of the Hall effect in Mn$_{\rm 1-x}$Fe$_{\rm x}$Si, as complemented by measurements in Mn$_{\rm 1-x}$Co$_{\rm x}$Si, when helimagnetic order is suppressed under substitutional doping. For small $x$ the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and the topological Hall effect (THE) change sign. Under larger doping the AHE remains small and consistent with the magnetization, while the THE grows by over a factor of ten. Both the sign and the magnitude of the AHE and the THE are in excellent agreement with calculations based on density functional theory. Our stu…
Mn$_{3}$X (X= Sn, Ge) are noncollinear antiferromagnets hosting a large anomalous Hall effect (AHE). Weyl nodes in the electronic dispersions are believed to cause this AHE, but their locus in the momentum space is yet to be pinned down. We present a detailed study of the Hall conductivity tensor and magnetization in Mn$_{3}$Sn crystals and find that in the presence of a moderate magnetic field, spin texture sets the orientation of the $k$-space Berry curvature with no detectable in-plane anisotropy due to the $Z_6$ symmetry of the underlying lattice. We quantify the energy cost of domain nucl…
Under symmetry breaking, a three-dimensional nodal-line semimetal can turn into a topological insulator or Weyl semimetal, accompanied by the generation of momentum-space Berry curvature. We develop a theory that unifies their circular dichroism and highlights the roles of Berry curvature distribution and light incident direction. Nontrivially, these phases exhibit distinct dichroic optical absorption and radial Hall effects, with characteristic scalings with photon energy and electric field. Our findings offer a new diagnosis tool for examining topological phases of matter.
We carry out density functional theory calculations which demonstrate that the electron dynamics in the skyrmion phase of Fe-rich Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Ge alloys is governed by Berry phase physics. We observe that the magnitude of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, directly related to the mixed space-momentum Berry phases, changes sign and magnitude with concentration $x$ in direct correlation with the data of Shibata {\it et al.}, Nature Nanotech. {\bf 8}, 723 (2013). The computed anomalous and topological Hall effects in FeGe are also in good agreement with available experiments. We further de…
To justify the origin of anomalous Hall effect (AHE), it is highly desirable to have the system parameters tuned continuously. By quantitative calculations, we show that the doping dependent sign reversal in CuCr$_{2}$Se$_{4-x}$Br$_{x}$, observed but not understood, is nothing but direct evidence for the Berry-Phase mechanism of AHE. The systematic calculations well explain the experiment data for the whole doping range where the impurity scattering rates is changed by several orders with Br substitution. Further sign change is also predicted, which may be tested by future experiments.

Ever since the novel quantum Hall effect in bilayer graphene was discovered, and explained by a Berry phase of 2pi [K. S. Novoselov et al., "Unconventional quantum Hall effect and Berry's phase of 2pi in bilayer graphene", Nature Phys. 2, 177 (2006)], it has been widely accepted that the low-energy electronic wavefunction in this system is described by a non-trivial Berry phase of 2pi, different from the zero phase of a conventional two-dimensional electron gas. Here, we show that (i) the relevant Berry phase for bilayer graphene is not different from that for a conventional two-dimensional el…
By means of first-principles calculations and modeling analysis, we have predicted that the traditional 2D-graphene hosts the topological phononic Weyl-like points (PWs) and phononic nodal line (PNL) in its phonon spectrum. The phonon dispersion of graphene hosts three type-I PWs (both PW1 and PW2 at the BZ corners \emph{K} and \emph{K}', and PW3 locating along the $Γ$-\emph{K} line), one type-II PW4 locating along the $Γ$-\emph{M} line, and one PNL surrounding the centered $Γ$ point in the $q_{x,y}$ plane. The calculations further reveal that Berry curvatures are vanishingly zero throughout t…
