This paper is complementary to the work Rosen-Silverman, which derives a criteria on the number fields for the independence of Heegner points associated to them on non-CM elliptic curves. We show that the same criteria holds for CM elliptic curves. A generalisation of the independence criteria for the Heegner points associated to an order of fixed conductor of quadratic imaginary fields can also be found in this paper.
Let E/Q be an elliptic curve with a fixed modular parametrization F : X_0(N) --> E and let P_1,...,P_r be Heegner points on E attached to the rings of integers of distinct quadratic imaginary field k_1,...,k_r. We prove that if the odd parts of the class numbers of k_1,...,k_r are larger than a constant C=C(E,F) depending only on E and F, then the points P_1,...,P_r are independent in E/(torsion). We also discuss a possible application to the elliptic curve discrete logarithm problem.
For certain elliptic curves $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ with multiplicative reduction at a prime $p\geq 5$, we prove the $p$-indivisibility of the derived Heegner classes defined with respect to an imaginary quadratic field $K$, as conjectured by Kolyvagin. The conditions on $E$ include that $E[p]$ be irreducible and not finite at $p$ and that $p$ split in the imaginary quadratic field $K$, along with certain $p$-indivisibility conditions on various Tamagawa factors. The proof extends the arguments of the second author for the case where $E$ has good ordinary reduction at~$p$.
We study generalised Heegner cycles, originally introduced by Bertolini-Darmon-Prasanna for modular curves, in the context of Mumford curves. The main result of this paper relates generalized Heegner cycles with the two variable anticyclotomic $p$-adic $L$-function attached to a Coleman family $f_\infty$ and an imaginary quadratic field $K$. Our generalised Heegner cycles allow us to study the restriction of this function to non-central critical lines. The main result expresses the derivative along the weight variable of this anticyclotomic $p$-adic $L$-function restricted to non necessarily c…
We give an alternative computation of the twisted second moment of critival values of class group $L$-functions attached to an imaginary quadratic field. The method avoids long calculations and yields the expected polynomial growth in the $s$-parameter for the remaining term.
In a recent paper, Castella and Hsieh proved results for Selmer groups associated with Galois representations attached to newforms twisted by Hecke characters of an imaginary quadratic field. These results are obtained under the so-called Heegner hypothesis that the imaginary quadratic field satisfies with respect to the level of the modular form. In particular, Castella and Hsieh prove the rank 0 case of the Bloch-Kato conjecture for $L$-functions of modular forms in their setting. The key point of the work of Castella and Hsieh is a remarkable link between generalized Heegner cycles and $p$-…
Given a rational elliptic curve E, a suitable imaginary quadratic field K and a quaternionic Hecke eigenform g of weight 2 obtained from E by level raising such that the sign in the functional equation for L_K(E,s) (respectively, L_K(g,1)) is -1 (respectively, +1), we prove a ``Jochnowitz congruence'' between the algebraic part of L'_K(E,1) (expressed in terms of Heegner points on Shimura curves) and the algebraic part of L_K(g,1). This establishes a relation between Zhang's formula of Gross-Zagier type for central derivatives of L-series and his formula of Gross type for special values. Our r…
We improve Kolyvagin's upper bound on the order of the $p$-primary part of the Shafarevich-Tate group of an elliptic curve of rank one over a quadratic imaginary field. In many cases, our bound is precisely the one predicted by the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjectural formula.
Let $E$ be a rational elliptic curve, and $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field. In this article we give a method to construct Heegner points when $E$ has a prime bigger than $3$ of additive reduction ramifying in the field $K$. The ideas apply to more general contexts, like constructing Darmon points attached to real quadratic fields which is presented in the appendix.
Perrin-Riou has formulated a form of the Iwasawa main conjecture, which relates Heegner points to the Selmer group of an elliptic curve as one goes up the anticyclotomic Z_p extension of a quadratic imaginary field K. Building on the earlier work of Bertolini on this conjecture, and making use of the recent work of Mazur and Rubin on Kolyvagin's theory of Euler systems, we prove one divisibility of Perrin-Riou's conjectured equality. As a consequence, one obtains an upper bound on the rank of the Mordell-Weil group E(K) in terms of Heegner points.
Generalised Heegner cycles are associated to a pair of an elliptic Hecke eigenform and a Hecke character over an imaginary quadratic extension $K/\Q$. Let $p$ be an odd prime split in $K/\Q$ and $l\neq p$ an odd unramified prime. We prove the non-triviality of the $p$-adic Abel-Jacobi image of generalised Heegner cycles modulo $p$ over the $\Z_l$-anticylotomic extension of $K$. The result is an evidence for the refined Bloch-Beilinson and the Bloch-Kato conjecture. In the case of two, it provides a refinement of the results of Cornut and Vatsal on the non-triviality of Heegner points over the …
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb Q$ and let $p\geq5$ be a prime of good supersingular reduction for $E$. Let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field satisfying a modified "Heegner hypothesis" in which $p$ splits, write $K_\infty$ for the anticyclotomic $\mathbb Z_p$-extension of $K$ and let $Λ$ denote the Iwasawa algebra of $K_\infty/K$. By extending to the supersingular case the $Λ$-adic Kolyvagin method originally developed by Bertolini in the ordinary setting, we prove that Kobayashi's plus/minus $p$-primary Selmer groups of $E$ over $K_\infty$ have corank $1$ over $Λ$. As an applicat…
The asymptotic behaviour of the Neron-Tate height of Heegner points on a rational elliptic curve attached to an arithmetically normalized new cusp form f of weight 2, level N and trivial character is studied in this paper. By Gross-Zagier formula, this height is related to the special value at the critical point for the derivative of the Rankin-Selberg convolution of f with a certain weight one theta series attached to some ideal class of some imaginary quadratic field. Asymptotic formula for the first moments asociated to these Dirichlet series are proved and experimental results are carefull…
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve of conductor $N$, and let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field such that the root number of $E/K$ is $-1$. Let $O$ be an order in $K$ and assume that there exists an odd prime $p$, such that $p^2 \mid\mid N$, and $p$ is inert in $O$. Although there are no Heegner points on $X_0(N)$ attached to $O$, in this article we construct such points on Cartan non-split curves. In order to do that we give a method to compute Fourier expansions for forms in Cartan non-split curves, and prove that the constructed points form a Heegner system as in the classical case.
In this paper, we consider normalized newforms $f\in S_k(Γ_0(N),\varepsilon_f)$ whose non-constant term Fourier coefficients are congruent to those of an Eisenstein series modulo some prime ideal above a rational prime $p$. In this situation, we establish a congruence between the anticyclotomic $p$-adic $L$-function of Bertolini-Darmon-Prasanna and the Katz two-variable $p$-adic $L$-function. From this, we derive congruences between images under the $p$-adic Abel-Jacobi map of certain generalized Heegner cycles attached to $f$ and special values of the Katz $p$-adic $L$-function. In particular…
Generalised Heegner cycles are associated to a pair of an elliptic newform and a Hecke character over an imaginary quadratic extension $K/\Q$. The cycles live in a middle dimensional Chow group of a Kuga-Sato variety arising from an indefinite Shimura curve over the rationals and a self product of a CM abelian surface. Let $p$ be an odd prime split in $K/\Q$. We prove the non-triviality of the $p$-adic Abel-Jacobi image of generalised Heegner cycles modulo $p$ over the $\Z_p$-anticylotomic extension of $K$. The result implies the non-triviality of the generalised Heegner cycles in the top grad…
Let $E/\mathbf{Q}$ be an elliptic curve of conductor $N$, let $p>3$ be a prime where $E$ has good ordinary reduction, and let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field satisfying the Heegner hypothesis. In 1987, Perrin-Riou formulated an Iwasawa main conjecture for the Tate-Shafarevich group of $E$ over the anticyclotomic $\mathbf{Z}_p$-extension of $K$ in terms of Heegner points. In this paper, we give a proof of Perrin-Riou's conjecture under mild hypotheses. Our proof builds on Howard's theory of bipartite Euler systems and Wei Zhang's work on Kolyvagin's conjecture. In the case when $p$ splits i…
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve, $p$ a prime and $K_{\infty}/K$ the anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of a quadratic imaginary field $K$ satisfying the Heegner hypothesis. In this paper we make a conjecture about the fine Selmer group over $K_{\infty}$. We also make a conjecture about the structure of the module of Heegner points in $E(K_{\mathfrak{p}_{\infty}})/p$ where $K_{\mathfrak{p}_{\infty}}$ is the union of the completions of the fields $K_n$ at a prime of $K_{\infty}$ above $p$. We prove that these conjectures are equivalent. When $E$ has supersingular reduction at $p$ we…
Given a weight two modular form f with associated p-adic Galois representation V_f, for certain quadratic imaginary fields K one can construct canonical classes in the Galois cohomology of V_f by taking the Kummer images of Heegner points on the modular abelian variety attached to f. We show that these classes can be interpolated as f varies in a Hida family, and construct an Euler system of big Heegner points for Hida's universal ordinary deformation of V_f. We show that the specialization of this big Euler system to any form in the Hida family is nontrivial, extending results of Cornut and V…
Stark-Heegner points are conjectural substitutes for Heegner points when the imaginary quadratic field of the theory of complex multiplication is replaced by a real quadratic field $K$. They are constructed analytically as local points on elliptic curves with multiplicative reduction at a prime $p$ that remains inert in $K$, but are conjectured to be rational over ring class fields of $K$ and to satisfy a Shimura reciprocity law describing the action of $G_K$ on them. The main conjectures of \cite{darmon-hpxh} predict that any linear combination of Stark-Heegner points weighted by the values o…
Building on ideas of Vatsal, Cornut proved a conjecture of Mazur asserting the generic nonvanishing of Heegner points on an elliptic curve E as one ascends the anticyclotomic Z_p-extension of a quadratic imaginary extension K/Q. In the present article Cornut's result is extended by replacing the elliptic curve E with the Galois cohomology of Deligne's 2-dimensional l-adic representation attached to a modular form of weight 2k>2, and replacing the family of Heegner points with an analogous family of special cohomology classes.
Let f be a Bianchi modular form, that is, an automorphic form for GL(2) over an imaginary quadratic field F, and let P be a prime of F at which f is new. Let K be a quadratic extension of F, and L(f/K,s) the L-function of the base-change of f to K. Under certain hypotheses on f and K, the functional equation of L(f/K,s) ensures that it vanishes at the central point. The Bloch--Kato conjecture predicts that this should force the existence of non-trivial classes in an appropriate global Selmer group attached to f and K. In this paper, we use the theory of double integrals developed by Barrera Sa…
The main result of this text is a generalization of Perrin-Riou's p-adic Gross-Zagier formula to the case of Shimura curves over totally real fields. Let $F$ be a totally real field. Let $f$ be a Hilbert modular form over $F$ of parallel weight $2$, which is a new form and is ordinary at $p$. Let $E$ be a totally imaginary quadratic extension of $F$ of discriminant prime to $p$ and to the conductor of $f$. We may construct a $p$-adic $L$ function that interpolates special values of the complex $L$ functions associated to $f$, $E$ and finite order Hecke characters of $E$. The $p$-adic Gross-Zag…
Using class field theory, we prove a restriction on the intersection of the maximal abelian extensions associated with different number fields. This restriction is then used to improve a result of Rosen and Silverman about the linear independence of Heegner points. In addition, it yields effective restrictions for the special points lying on an algebraic subvariety in a product of modular curves. The latter application is related to the André-Oort conjecture.
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve and let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field. Under a certain Heegner hypothesis, Kolyvagin constructed cohomology classes for $E$ using $K$-CM points and conjectured they did not all vanish. Conditional on this conjecture, he described the Selmer rank of $E$ using his system of classes. We extend work of Wei Zhang to prove new cases of Kolyvagin's conjecture by considering congruences of modular forms modulo large powers of $p $. Additionally, we prove an analogous result, and give a description of the Selmer rank, in a complementary "definite" case (usi…
Following the prequel work \cite{VO3}, we prove a generalization of "Mazur's conjecture" for $L$-functions of elliptic curves in abelian extensions of imaginary quadratic fields, including the assertion that the Mordell-Weil rank of an elliptic curve in the ${\bf{Z}}_p^2$-extension is finitely generated modulo Heegner points. The novelty of the approach here is to use the existence of a suitable $p$-adic $L$-function to reduce the problem to a minimal nonvanishing criterion, which should be applicable to a broader class of problems than considered here.
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve having multiplicative reduction at a prime $p$. Let $(g,h)$ be a pair of eigenforms of weight $1$ arising as the theta series of an imaginary quadratic field $K$, and assume that the triple-product $L$-function $L(f,g,h,s)$ is self-dual and does not vanish at the central critical point $s=1$. The main result of this article is a formula expressing the $p$-adic iterated integrals introduced in [DLR] to the Kolyvagin classes associated by Bertolini and Darmon to a system of Heegner points on $E$.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over ${\bf Q}$ and $K$ an imaginary quadratic field satisfying the Heegner hypothesis. A classical result of Kolyvagin states that, under suitable assumptions, if the basic Heegner point $y_K \in E(K)$ is not divisible by an odd prime $p$, then the groups $E(K)/{\bf Z} y_K$ and $\sha(E/K)$ are finite and their orders are prime to $p$. In this article we develop the following themes: firstly, we discuss improvements of Kolyvagin's result, following Cha (2005) and Lawson and Wuthrich (2016). Secondly, we prove an abstract Iwasawa-theoretical result which allo…
Kolyvagin proved that the Tate-Shafarevich group of an elliptic curve over Q of analytic rank 0 or 1 is finite, and that its algebraic rank is equal to its analytic rank. A program of generalisation of this result to the case of some motives which are quotients of cohomology motives of Shimura varieties is offered. We prove some steps of this program, mainly for quotients of $H^7$ of Siegel sixfolds. For example, we "almost" find analogs of Kolyvagin's trace and reduction relations. Some steps of the present paper are new contribution, because they have no analogs in the case of elliptic curve…
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve, and $p$ a prime where $E$ has good reduction, and assume that $E$ admits a rational $p$-isogeny. In this paper, we study the anticyclotomic Iwasawa theory of $E$ over an imaginary quadratic field in which $p$ splits, which we relate to the anticyclotomic Iwasawa theory of characters following the method of Greenberg--Vatsal. As a result of our study, we obtain a proof, under mild hypotheses, of Perrin-Riou's Heegner point main conjecture, as well as a $p$-converse to the theorem of Gross--Zagier and Kolyvagin and the $p$-part of the Birch--Swinnerton-Dy…
Let E/Q be an elliptic curve and p a rational prime of good ordinary reduction. For every imaginary quadratic field K/Q satisfying the Heegner hypothesis for E we have a corresponding line in E(K)\otimes Q_p, known as a shadow line. When E/Q has analytic rank 2 and E/K has analytic rank 3, shadow lines are expected to lie in E(Q)\otimes Q_p. If, in addition, p splits in K/Q, then shadow lines can be determined using the anticyclotomic p-adic height pairing. We develop an algorithm to compute anticyclotomic p-adic heights which we then use to provide an algorithm to compute shadow lines. We con…
The Linear Independence hypothesis (LI), which states roughly that the imaginary parts of the critical zeros of Dirichlet L-functions are linearly independent over the rationals, is known to have interesting consequences in the study of prime number races, as was pointed out by Rubinstein and Sarnak. In this paper, we prove that a function field analogue of LI holds generically within certain families of elliptic curve L-functions and their symmetric powers. More precisely, for certain algebro-geometric families of elliptic curves defined over the function field of a fixed curve over a finite …
Let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field, $N$ be a positive integer, $f(z)$ be a newform of level $Γ_1(N)$, and $A_f$ be the abelian variety associated to $f$. For each $τ\in K$ ($\operatorname{Im} τ>0$), we construct a certain point $P_τ$ on $A_f$ defined over an extended ring class field of $K$ of level $N$. Our construction generalizes Birch's construction of the Heegner points to the abelian varieties associated to modular forms of level $Γ_1(N)$ and nontrivial character. Then, we show that $P_τ$'s satisfy the distribution and congruence relations of an Euler system, which implies that it s…
The exceptional zero phenomenon has been widely studied in the realm of $p$-adic $L$-functions, where the starting point lies in the foundational work of Mazur, Tate and Teitelbaum. This phenomenon also appears in the study of Euler systems, which comes as no surprise given the interaction between these two settings. When this occurs, one is led to study higher order derivatives of the Euler system in order to extract the arithmetic information which is usually encoded in the explicit reciprocity laws. In this work, we focus on the elliptic units of an imaginary quadratic field and study this …
We prove a $p$-converse theorem for elliptic curves $E/\mathbb{Q}$ with complex multiplication by the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ of an imaginary quadratic field $K$ in which $p$ is ramified. Namely, letting $r_p = \mathrm{corank}_{\mathbb{Z}_p}\mathrm{Sel}_{p^{\infty}}(E/\mathbb{Q})$, we show that $r_p \le 1 \implies \mathrm{rank}_{\mathbb{Z}}E(\mathbb{Q}) = \mathrm{ord}_{s = 1}L(E/\mathbb{Q},s) = r_p$ and $\#\mathrm{Sha}(E/\mathbb{Q}) < \infty$. In particular, this has applications to two classical Diophantine problems. First, it resolves Sylvester's conjecture on rational sums of cubes…
We formulate a multi-variable p-adic Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for p-ordinary elliptic curves A over number fields K. It generalises the one-variable conjecture of Mazur-Tate-Teitelbaum, who studied the case K=Q and the phenomenon of exceptional zeros. We discuss old and new theoretical evidence towards our conjecture and in particular we fully prove it, under mild conditions, in the following situation: K is imaginary quadratic, A=E_K is the base-change to K of an elliptic curve over the rationals, and the rank of A is either 0 or 1. The proof is naturally divided into a few cases.…
Iwasawa theory of modular forms over anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of imaginary quadratic fields has been studied by several authors, starting from the works of Bertolini-Darmon and Iovita-Spiess, under the crucial assumption that the prime $p$ is unramified in $K$. We start in this article the systematic study of anticyclotomic $p$-adic $L$-functions when $p$ is ramified in $K$. In particular, when $f$ is a weight $2$ modular form attached to an elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$ having multiplicative reduction at $p$, and $p$ is ramified in $K$, we show an analogue of the exceptional z…
