We derive the capacity region of the state-dependent semideterministic broadcast channel with noncausal state-information at the transmitter. One of the two outputs of this channel is a deterministic function of the channel input and the channel state, and the state is assumed to be known noncausally to the transmitter but not to the receivers. We show that appending the state to the deterministic output does not increase capacity.
We also derive an outer bound on the capacity of general (not necessarily semideterministic) state-dependent broadcast channels.
The capacity of the semideterministic discrete memoryless broadcast channel (SD-BC) with partial message side-information (P-MSI) at the receivers is established. In the setting without a common message, it is shown that P-MSI to the stochastic receiver alone can increase capacity, whereas P-MSI to the deterministic receiver can only increase capacity if also the stochastic receiver has P-MSI. The latter holds only for the setting without a common message: if the encoder also conveys a common message, then P-MSI to the deterministic receiver alone can increase capacity. These capacity results …
The capacity regions of semideterministic multiuser channels, such as the semideterministic relay channel and the multiple access channel with partially cribbing encoders, have been characterized using the idea of partial-decode-forward. However, the requirement to explicitly decode part of the message at intermediate nodes can be restrictive in some settings; for example, when nodes have different side information regarding the state of the channel. In this paper, we generalize this scheme to $\textit{cooperative-bin-forward}$ by building on the observation that explicit recovering of part of…
We provide a necessary and sufficient condition that under some technical assumption characterizes all two-receiver broadcast channels for which time division is optimal for transmission of private messages.
We present an achievable rate region for the general three user discrete memoryless broadcast channel, based on nested coset codes. We characterize 3-to-1 discrete broadcast channels, a class of broadcast channels for which the best known coding technique\footnote{We henceforth refer to this as Marton's coding for three user discrete broadcast channel.}, which is obtained by a natural generalization of that proposed by Marton for the general two user discrete broadcast channel, is strictly sub-optimal. In particular, we identify a novel 3-to-1 discrete broadcast channel for which Marton's codi…
Capacity Bounds for Broadcast Channels with Confidential Messages
Two outer bounds on the admissible source region for broadcast channels with correlated sources are presented: the first one is strictly tighter than the existing outer bound by Gohari and Anantharam while the second one provides a complete characterization of the admissible source region in the case where the two sources are conditionally independent given the common part. These outer bounds are deduced from the general necessary conditions established for the lossy source broadcast problem via suitable comparisons between the virtual broadcast channel (induced by the source and the reconstru…
The identification capacity region of the compound broadcast channel is determined under an average error criterion, where the sender has no channel state information. We give single-letter identification capacity formulas for discrete channels and multiple-input multiple-output Gaussian channels under an average input constraint. The capacity theorems apply to general discrete memoryless broadcast channels. This is in contrast to the transmission setting, where the capacity is only known for special cases, notably the degraded broadcast channel and the multiple-input multiple-output broadcast…
We investigate the effects of an additional relay node on the secrecy of broadcast channels by considering the model of relay broadcast channels with confidential messages. We show that this additional relay node can increase the achievable secrecy rate region of the broadcast channels with confidential messages. More specifically, first, we investigate the discrete memoryless relay broadcast channels with two confidential messages and one common message. Three inner bounds (with respect to decode-forward, generalized noise-forward and compress-forward strategies) and an outer bound on the cap…
We establish the capacity region of several classes of broadcast channels with random state in which the channel to each user is selected from two possible channel state components and the state is known only at the receivers. When the channel components are deterministic, we show that the capacity region is achieved via Marton coding. This channel model does not belong to any class of broadcast channels for which the capacity region was previously known and is useful in studying wireless communication channels when the fading state is known only at the receivers. We then establish the capacit…
This paper investigates the capacity regions of two-receiver broadcast channels where each receiver (i) has both common and private-message requests, and (ii) knows part of the private message requested by the other receiver as side information. We first propose a transmission scheme and derive an inner bound for the two-receiver memoryless broadcast channel. We next prove that this inner bound is tight for the deterministic channel and the more capable channel, thereby establishing their capacity regions. We show that this inner bound is also tight for all classes of two-receiver broadcast ch…
We consider a discrete memoryless broadcast channel consists of two users and a sender. The sender has two independent confidential messages for each user. We extend the work of Liu et al.\ on broadcast channels with two confidential messages with weak secrecy criterion to strong secrecy. Our results are based on an extension of the techniques developed by Hou and Kramer on bounding Kullback-Leibler divergence in context of \textit{resolvability} and \textit{effective secrecy}.
This paper shows that the capacity region of the continuous-time Poisson broadcast channel is achieved via superposition coding for most channel parameter values. Interestingly, the channel in some subset of these parameter values does not belong to any of the existing classes of broadcast channels for which superposition coding is optimal (e.g., degraded, less noisy, more capable). In particular, we introduce the notion of effectively less noisy broadcast channel and show that it implies less noisy but is not in general implied by more capable. For the rest of the channel parameter values, we…
In this paper, a class of broadcast interference channels (BIC) is investigated, where one of the two broadcast receivers is subject to interference coming from a point-to-point transmission. For a general discrete memoryless broadcast interference channel (DM-BIC), an achievable scheme based on message splitting, superposition and binning is proposed and a concise representation of the corresponding achievable rate region R is obtained. Two partial-order broadcast conditions interference-oblivious less noisy and interference-cognizant less noisy are defined, thereby extending the usual less n…
Achievable rate regions for cooperative relay broadcast channels with rate-limited feedback are proposed. Specifically, we consider two-receiver memoryless broadcast channels where each receiver sends feedback signals to the transmitter through a noiseless and rate-limited feedback link, and meanwhile, acts as relay to transmit cooperative information to the other receiver. It's shown that the proposed rate regions improve on the known regions that consider either relaying cooperation or feedback communication, but not both.
In this paper, the posterior matching scheme proposed by Shayevits and Feder is extended to the Gaussian broadcast channel with feedback, and the error probabilities and achievable rate region are derived for this coding strategy by using the iterated random function theory. A variant of the Ozarow-Leung code for the general two-user broadcast channel with feedback can be realized as a special case of our coding scheme. Furthermore, for the symmetric Gaussian broadcast channel with feedback, our coding scheme achieves the linear-feedback sum-capacity like the LQG code and outperforms the Krame…
We consider the discrete memoryless degraded broadcast channels. We prove that the error probability of decoding tends to one exponentially for rates outside the capacity region and derive an explicit lower bound of this exponent function. We shall demonstrate that the information spectrum approach is quite useful for investigating this problem.
Machine learning has shown promising results for communications system problems. We present results on the use of deep auto-encoders in order to learn a transceiver for the multiuser degraded broadcast channel, and see that the auto encoder is able to learn to communicate on this channel using superposition coding. Additionally, the deep neural net is able to determine a bit labeling and optimize the per user power allocation that depends on the per user SNR.
We derive upper and lower bounds on the reliability function for the common-message discrete memoryless broadcast channel with variable-length feedback. We show that the bounds are tight when the broadcast channel is stochastically degraded. For the achievability part, we adapt Yamamoto and Itoh's coding scheme by controlling the expectation of the maximum of a set of stopping times. For the converse part, we adapt Burnashev's proof techniques for establishing the reliability functions for (point-to-point) discrete memoryless channels with variable-length feedback and sequential hypothesis tes…
We consider a cache-aided communications system in which a transmitter communicates with many receivers over an erasure broadcast channel. The system serves as a basic model for communicating on-demand content during periods of high network congestion, where some content can be pre-placed in local caches near the receivers. We formulate the cache-aided communications problem as a joint cache-channel coding problem, and characterise some information-theoretic tradeoffs between reliable communications rates and cache sizes. We show that if the receivers experience different channel qualities, th…
