Outer bounds on the admissible source region for broadcast channels with dependent sources are developed and used to prove capacity results for several classes of sources and channels.
Two outer bounds on the admissible source region for broadcast channels with correlated sources are presented: the first one is strictly tighter than the existing outer bound by Gohari and Anantharam while the second one provides a complete characterization of the admissible source region in the case where the two sources are conditionally independent given the common part. These outer bounds are deduced from the general necessary conditions established for the lossy source broadcast problem via suitable comparisons between the virtual broadcast channel (induced by the source and the reconstru…
An outer bound to the two-receiver discrete memoryless broadcast channel is presented. We compare it to the known outer bounds and show that the outer bound presented is at least as tight as the existing bounds.
An outer bound to the capacity region of the two-receiver discrete memoryless broadcast channel is given. The outer bound is tight for all cases where the capacity region is known. When specialized to the case of no common information, this outer bound is contained in the Korner-Marton outer bound. This containment is shown to be strict for the binary skew-symmetric broadcast channel. Thus, this outer bound is in general tighter than all other known outer bounds on the discrete memoryless broadcast channel.
The Marton-Gelfand-Pinsker inner bound on the capacity region of broadcast channels was extended by Han-Costa to include arbitrarily correlated sources where the capacity region is replaced by an admissible source region. The main arguments of Han-Costa are correct but unfortunately the authors overlooked an inequality in their derivation. The corrected region is presented and the absence of the omitted inequality is shown to sometimes admit sources that are not admissible.
In this note we establish two facts concerning the so-called {\em New-Jersey} outer bound. We show that this outer bound is equivalent to a much simpler {\em computable} region; and secondly we show that in the absence of private information this bound is exactly same as the $UV$-outerbound.
This paper presents outerbounds for the two-user Gaussian fading broadcast channel. These outerbounds are based on Costa's entropy power inequality (Costa-EPI) and are formulated mathematically as a feasibility problem. For classes of the two-user Gaussian fading broadcast channel where the outerbound is found to have a feasible solution, we find conditions under which a suitable inner and outer bound meet. For all such cases, this paper provides a partial characterization of the capacity region of the Gaussian two-user fading broadcast channel.
This paper investigates the joint source-channel coding problem of sending a memoryless source over a memoryless broadcast channel. An inner bound and several outer bounds on the admissible distortion region are derived, which respectively generalize and unify several existing bounds. As a consequence, we also obtain an inner bound and an outer bound for the degraded broadcast channel case. When specialized to the Gaussian or binary source broadcast, the inner bound and outer bound not only recover the best known inner bound and outer bound in the literature, but also generate some new results…
Recently, Tian et al. [1] considered joint source-channel coding of transmitting a Gaussian source over $K$-user Gaussian broadcast channel, and derived an outer bound on the admissible distortion region. In [1], they stated "due to its nonlinear form, it appears difficult to determine whether it is always looser than the trivial outer bound in all distortion regimes with bandwidth compression". However, in this correspondence we solve this problem and prove that for the bandwidth expansion case ($K\geq2$), this outer bound is strictly tighter than the trivial outer bound with each user being …
We consider a broadcast channel with 3 receivers and 2 messages (M0, M1) where two of the three receivers need to decode messages (M0, M1) while the remaining one just needs to decode the message M0. We study the best known inner and outer bounds under this setting, in an attempt to find the deficiencies with the current techniques of establishing the bounds. We produce a simple example where we are able to explicitly evaluate the inner bound and show that it differs from the general outer bound. For a class of channels where the general inner and outer bounds differ, we use a new argument to …
We derive a new outer bound on the capacity region of broadcast traffic in multiple input broadcast packet erasure channels with feedback, and extend this outer bound to packet erasure relay networks with feedback. We show the tightness of the outer bound for various classes of networks. An important engineering implication of this work is that for network coding schemes for parallel broadcast channels, the `xor' packets should be sent over correlated broadcast subchannels.
In this paper, we derive outer bounds on the capacity region of two classes of the general two-user discrete memoryless broadcast channels with side-information at the transmitter. The first class comprises the classical broadcast channel where a sender transmits two independent messages to two receivers. A constraint that each message must be kept confidential from the unintended receiver constitutes the second class. For both classes, the conditional distribution characterizing the channel depends on a state process and the encoder has side-information provided to it in a noncausal manner. F…
In this paper, we study capacity bounds for discrete memoryless broadcast channels with confidential messages. Two private messages as well as a common message are transmitted; the common message is to be decoded by both receivers, while each private message is only for its intended receiver. In addition, each private message is to be kept secret from the unintended receiver where secrecy is measured by equivocation. We propose both inner and outer bounds to the rate equivocation region for broadcast channels with confidential messages. The proposed inner bound generalizes Csiszár and Körner's…
We investigate novel inner and outer bounds on the rate region of a 2-user Gaussian broadcast channel with finite, heterogeneous blocklength constraints (HB-GBC). In particular, we introduce a new, modified Sato-type outer bound that can be applied in the finite blocklength regime and which does not require the same marginal property. We then develop and analyze composite shell codes, which are suitable for the HB-GBC. Especially, to achieve a lower decoding latency for the user with a shorter blocklength constraint when successive interference cancellation is used, we derive the number of sym…
We study the best known general inner bound[MAR '79] and outer bound[N-EG'07] for the capacity region of the two user discrete memory less channel. We prove that a seemingly stronger outer bound is identical to a weaker form of the outer bound that was also presented in [N-EG'07]. We are able to further express the best outer bound in a form that is computable, i.e. there are bounds on the cardinalities of the auxiliary random variables. The inner and outer bounds coincide for all channels for which the capacity region is known and it is not known whether the regions described by these bounds …
We investigate the effects of an additional relay node on the secrecy of broadcast channels by considering the model of relay broadcast channels with confidential messages. We show that this additional relay node can increase the achievable secrecy rate region of the broadcast channels with confidential messages. More specifically, first, we investigate the discrete memoryless relay broadcast channels with two confidential messages and one common message. Three inner bounds (with respect to decode-forward, generalized noise-forward and compress-forward strategies) and an outer bound on the cap…
Despite considerable progress on the information-theoretic broadcast channel, the capacity region of fading broadcast channels with channel state known at the receivers but unknown at the transmitter remains unresolved. We address this subject by introducing a layered erasure broadcast channel model in which each component channel has a state that specifies the received signal levels in an instance of a deterministic binary expansion channel. We find the capacity region of this class of broadcast channels. The capacity achieving strategy assigns each signal level to the user that derives the m…
We consider the Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel with common and private messages. We obtain the degrees of freedom (DoF) region of this channel. We first show that a parallel Gaussian broadcast channel with unmatched sub-channels can be constructed from any given Gaussian MIMO broadcast channel by using the generalized singular value decomposition (GSVD) and a relaxation on the power constraint for the channel input, in a way that the capacity region of the constructed parallel channel provides an outer bound for the capacity region of the original channel. The…
This paper investigates the capacity region of the three-receiver AWGN broadcast channel where the receivers (i) have private-message requests and (ii) may know some of the messages requested by other receivers as side information. We first classify all 64 possible side information configurations into eight groups, each consisting of eight members. We next construct transmission schemes, and derive new inner and outer bounds for the groups. This establishes the capacity region for 52 out of 64 possible side information configurations. For six groups (i.e., groups 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 8 in our te…
In this paper, a class of broadcast interference channels (BIC) is investigated, where one of the two broadcast receivers is subject to interference coming from a point-to-point transmission. For a general discrete memoryless broadcast interference channel (DM-BIC), an achievable scheme based on message splitting, superposition and binning is proposed and a concise representation of the corresponding achievable rate region R is obtained. Two partial-order broadcast conditions interference-oblivious less noisy and interference-cognizant less noisy are defined, thereby extending the usual less n…
This paper considers the three-receiver AWGN broadcast channel where the receivers (i) have private-message requests and (ii) know some of the messages requested by other receivers as side information. For this setup, all possible side information configurations have been recently classified into eight groups and the capacity of the channel has been established for six groups (Asadi et al., ISIT 2014). We propose inner and outer bounds for the two remaining groups, groups 4 and 7. A distinguishing feature of these two groups is that the weakest receiver knows the requested message of the stron…
A partially cooperative relay broadcast channel (RBC) is a three-node network with one source node and two destination nodes (destinations 1 and 2) where destination 1 can act as a relay to assist destination 2. Inner and outer bounds on the capacity region of the discrete memoryless partially cooperative RBC are obtained. When the relay function is disabled, the inner and outer bounds reduce to new bounds on the capacity region of broadcast channels. Four classes of RBCs are studied in detail. For the partially cooperative RBC with degraded message sets, inner and outer bounds are obtained. F…
We study the effects of introducing a feedback channel in the two-receiver erasure source-broadcast problem in which a binary equiprobable source is to be sent over an erasure broadcast channel to two receivers subject to erasure distortion constraints. The receivers each require a certain fraction of a source sequence, and we are interested in the minimum latency, or transmission time, required to serve them all. We first show that for a two-user broadcast channel, a point-to-point outer bound can always be achieved. We further show that the point-to-point outer bound can also be achieved if …
Achievable data rates in wireless systems rely heavily on the available channel state information (CSI) throughout the network. However, feedback links, which provide this information, are scarce, unreliable, and subject to security threats. In this work, we study the impact of having intermittent feedback links on the capacity region of the canonical two-user erasure broadcast channels. In our model, at any time instant, each receiver broadcasts its CSI, and at any other node, this information either becomes available with unit delay or gets erased. For this setting, we develop a new set of o…
We consider the joint source-channel coding problem of sending a Gaussian source on a K-user Gaussian broadcast channel with bandwidth mismatch. A new outer bound to the achievable distortion region is derived using the technique of introducing more than one additional auxiliary random variable, which was previously used to derive sum-rate lower bound for the symmetric Gaussian multiple description problem. By combining this outer bound with the achievability result based on source-channel separation, we provide approximate characterizations of the achievable distortion region within constant …
This paper investigates the capacity region of the optical intensity broadcast channels (OI-BCs), where the input is subject to a peak-intensity constraint, an average-intensity constraint, or both. By leveraging the decomposition results of several random variables, i.e., uniform, exponential, and truncated exponential random variables, and adopting a superposition coding (SC) scheme, the inner bound on the capacity region is derived. Then, the outer bound is derived by applying the conditional entropy power inequality (EPI). In the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, the inner bound asy…
We study the problem of coding over a general discrete memoryless broadcast channel controlled by random parameters. The parameters are available at the transmitter in a non-causal manner and are subject to a state masking constraint on the receivers. We derive inner and outer bounds on the achievable region and show that for the special case of Gaussian broadcast channel with private messages, these bounds are tight.
This work investigates the secrecy capacity of the Wiretap Broadcast Channel (WBC) with an external eavesdropper where a source wishes to communicate two private messages over a Broadcast Channel (BC) while keeping them secret from the eavesdropper. We derive a non-trivial outer bound on the secrecy capacity region of this channel which, in absence of security constraints, reduces to the best known outer bound to the capacity of the standard BC. An inner bound is also derived which follows the behavior of both the best known inner bound for the BC and the Wiretap Channel. These bounds are show…
The two-receiver broadcast packet erasure channel with feedback and memory is studied. Memory is modeled using a finite-state Markov chain representing a channel state. Outer and inner bounds on the capacity region are derived when the channel state is strictly causally known at the transmitter. The bounds are both formulated in terms of feasibility problems and they are matching in all but one of the constraints. The results are extended to feedback with larger delay. Numerical results show that the bounds are close in many examples and the gains offered through feedback can be quite large. T…
In wireless data networks, communication is particularly susceptible to eavesdropping due to its broadcast nature. Security and privacy systems have become critical for wireless providers and enterprise networks. This paper considers the problem of secret communication over the Gaussian broadcast channel, where a multi-antenna transmitter sends independent confidential messages to two users with perfect secrecy. That is, each user would like to obtain its own message reliably and confidentially. First, a computable Sato-type outer bound on the secrecy capacity region is provided for a multi-an…
This paper focuses on the 1-to-K broadcast packet erasure channel (PEC), which is a generalization of the broadcast binary erasure channel from the binary symbol to that of arbitrary finite fields GF(q) with sufficiently large q. We consider the setting in which the source node has instant feedback of the channel outputs of the K receivers after each transmission. Such a setting directly models network coded packet transmission in the downlink direction with integrated feedback mechanisms (such as Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ)). The main results of this paper are: (i) The capacity region for …
We study the capacity regions of broadcast channels with binary inputs and symmetric outputs. We study the partial order induced by the more capable ordering of broadcast channels for channels belonging to this class. This study leads to some surprising connections regarding various notions of dominance of receivers. The results here also help us isolate some classes of symmetric channels where the best known inner and outer bounds differ.
The problem of channel coding over the Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel (BC) with additive independent Gaussian states is considered. The states are known in a noncausal manner to the encoder, and it wishes to minimize the amount of information that the receivers can learn from the channel outputs about the state sequence. The state leakage rate is measured as a normalized blockwise mutual information between the state sequence and the channel outputs' sequences. We employ a new version of a state-dependent extremal inequality and show that Gaussian input maximi…
We investigate the effects of user cooperation on the secrecy of broadcast channels by considering a cooperative relay broadcast channel. We show that user cooperation can increase the achievable secrecy region. We propose an achievable scheme that combines Marton's coding scheme for broadcast channels and Cover and El Gamal's compress-and-forward scheme for relay channels. We derive outer bounds for the rate-equivocation region using auxiliary random variables for single-letterization. Finally, we consider a Gaussian channel and show that both users can have positive secrecy rates, which is n…
In wireless data networks, communication is particularly susceptible to eavesdropping due to its broadcast nature. Security and privacy systems have become critical for wireless providers and enterprise networks. This paper considers the problem of secret communication over the Gaussian broadcast channel, where a multi-antenna transmitter sends independent confidential messages to two users with information-theoretic secrecy. That is, each user would like to obtain its own confidential message in a reliable and safe manner. This communication model is referred to as the multi-antenna Gaussian …
We derive the capacity region of the state-dependent semideterministic broadcast channel with noncausal state-information at the transmitter. One of the two outputs of this channel is a deterministic function of the channel input and the channel state, and the state is assumed to be known noncausally to the transmitter but not to the receivers. We show that appending the state to the deterministic output does not increase capacity. We also derive an outer bound on the capacity of general (not necessarily semideterministic) state-dependent broadcast channels.
We consider scheduled message communication over a discrete memoryless degraded broadcast channel. The framework we consider here models both the random message arrivals and the subsequent reliable communication by suitably combining techniques from queueing theory and information theory. The channel from the transmitter to each of the receivers is quasi-static, flat, and with independent fades across the receivers. Requests for message transmissions are assumed to arrive according to an i.i.d. arrival process. Then, (i) we derive an outer bound to the region of message arrival vectors achieva…
Jolfaei et al. used feedback to create transmit signals that are simultaneously useful for multiple users in a broadcast channel. Later, Georgiadis and Tassiulas studied erasure broadcast channels with feedback, and presented the capacity region under certain assumptions. These results provided the fundamental ideas used in communication protocols for networks with delayed channel state information. However, to the best of our knowledge, the capacity region of erasure broadcast channels with feedback and with a common message for both receivers has never been presented. This latter problem sho…
The broadcast channel (BC) with one common and two private messages with leakage constraints is studied, where leakage rate refers to the normalized mutual information between a message and a channel symbol string. Each private message is destined for a different user and the leakage rate to the other receiver must satisfy a constraint. This model captures several scenarios concerning secrecy, i.e., when both, either or neither of the private messages are secret. Inner and outer bounds on the leakage-capacity region are derived when the eavesdropper knows the codebook. The inner bound relies o…
This paper establishes the capacity region of a class of broadcast channels with random state in which each channel component is selected from two possible functions and each receiver knows its state sequence. This channel model does not fit into any class of broadcast channels for which the capacity region was previously known and is useful in studying wireless communication channels when the fading state is known only at the receivers. The capacity region is shown to coincide with the UV outer bound and is achieved via Marton coding.
The capacity region of the 1-to-K PEC with COF was previously known only for the case K=2. Such a setting directly models network coded packet transmission in the downlink direction with integrated feedback mechanisms (such as Automa…
In general, the different links of a broadcast channel may experience different fading dynamics and, potentially, unequal or hybrid channel state information (CSI) conditions. The faster the fading and the shorter the fading block length, the more often the link needs to be trained and estimated at the receiver, and the more likely that CSI is stale or unavailable at the transmitter. Disparity of link fading dynamics in the presence of CSI limitations can be modeled by a multi-user broadcast channel with both non-identical link fading block lengths as well as dissimilar link CSIR/CSIT conditio…
In this paper, first, we investigate the model of degraded broadcast channel with side information and confidential messages. This work is from Steinberg's work on the degraded broadcast channel with causal and noncausal side information, and Csisz$\acute{a}$r-Körner's work on broadcast channel with confidential messages. Inner and outer bounds on the capacity-equivocation regions are provided for the noncausal and causal cases. Superposition coding and double-binning technique are used in the corresponding achievability proofs. Then, we investigate the degraded broadcast channel with side inf…
In this paper, we investigate upper and lower bounds on the capacity of two-user fading broadcast channels where one of the users has a constant (non-fading) channel. We use the Costa entropy power inequality (EPI) along with an optimization framework to derive upper bounds on the sum-capacity and superposition coding to obtain lower bounds on the sum-rate for this channel. For this fading broadcast channel where one channel is constant, we find that the upper and lower bounds meet under special cases, and in general, we show that the achievable sum-rate comes within a constant of the outer bo…
This paper shows that the capacity region of the continuous-time Poisson broadcast channel is achieved via superposition coding for most channel parameter values. Interestingly, the channel in some subset of these parameter values does not belong to any of the existing classes of broadcast channels for which superposition coding is optimal (e.g., degraded, less noisy, more capable). In particular, we introduce the notion of effectively less noisy broadcast channel and show that it implies less noisy but is not in general implied by more capable. For the rest of the channel parameter values, we…
We consider a $K$-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) broadcast channel (BC) where the channel state information (CSI) of user $i(i=1,2,\ldots,K)$ may be instantaneously perfect (P), delayed (D) or not known (N) at the transmitter with probabilities $λ_P^i$, $λ_D^i$ and $λ_N^i$, respectively. In this setting, according to the three possible CSIT for each user, knowledge of the joint CSIT of the $K$ users could have at most $3^K$ states. In this paper, given the marginal probabilities of CSIT (i.e., $λ_P^i$, $λ_D^i$ and $λ_N^i$), we derive an outer bound for the DoF region of the $K$-user …
In this paper, we derive information-theoretic performance limits for three classes of two-user state-dependent discrete memoryless broadcast channels, with noncausal side-information at the encoder. The first class of channels comprises a sender broadcasting two independent messages to two non-cooperating receivers; for channels of the second class, each receiver is given the message it need not decode; and the third class comprises channels where the sender is constrained to keep each message confidential from the unintended receiver. We derive inner bounds for all the three classes of chann…
In this paper, the capacity region of the Layered Packet Erasure Broadcast Channel (LPE-BC) with Channel Output Feedback (COF) available at the transmitter is investigated. The LPE-BC is a high-SNR approximation of the fading Gaussian BC recently proposed by Tse and Yates, who characterized the capacity region for any number of users and any number of layers when there is no COF. This paper derives capacity inner and outer bounds for the LPE-BC with COF for the case of two users and any number of layers. The inner bounds generalize past results for the two-user erasure BC, which is a special c…
The degrees of freedom (DoF) region of the fast-fading MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) Gaussian broadcast channel (BC) is studied when there is delayed channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). In this setting, the channel matrices are assumed to vary independently across time and the transmitter is assumed to know the channel matrices with some arbitrary finite delay. An outer-bound to the DoF region of the general $K$-user MIMO BC (with an arbitrary number of antennas at each terminal) is derived. This outer-bound is then shown to be tight for two classes of MIMO BCs, namely…
The two-user wireless ergodic fading Broadcast Channel (BC) with partial Channel State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT) is considered. The CSIT is given by an arbitrary deterministic function of the channel state. This characteristic yields a full control over how much state information is available, from perfect to no information. In literature, capacity derivations for wireless ergodic fading channels, specifically for fading BCs, mostly rely on the analysis of channels comprising of parallel sub-channels. This technique is usually suitable for the cases where perfect state information …
In this paper, a new proof for the degrees of freedom (DoF) region of the K-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel (BC) with no channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) and perfect channel state information at the receivers (CSIR) is provided. Based on this proof, the capacity region of a certain class of MIMO BC with channel distribution information at the transmitter (CDIT) and perfect CSIR is derived. Finally, an outer bound for the DoF region of the MIMO interference channel (IC) with no CSIT is provided.
In this work, we study the arbitrarily varying broadcast channel (AVBC), when state information is available at the transmitter in a causal manner. We establish inner and outer bounds on both the random code capacity region and the deterministic code capacity region with degraded message sets. The capacity region is then determined for a class of channels satisfying a condition on the mutual informations between the strategy variables and the channel outputs. As an example, we consider the arbitrarily varying binary symmetric broadcast channel with correlated noises. We show cases where the co…
Recently, the physical layer security (PLS) of the communication systems has been shown to be enhanced by using legal receiver's feedback. The present secret key based feedback scheme mainly focuses on producing key from the feedback and using this key to protect part of the transmitted message. However, this feedback scheme has been proved only optimal for several degraded cases. The broadcast channel with mutual secrecy requirement (BC-MSR) is important as it constitutes the essence of physical layer security (PLS) in the down-link of the wireless communication systems. In this paper, we inv…
In a multi-user channel, completion time refers to the number of channel uses required for users, each with some given fixed bit pool, to complete the transmission of all their data bits. This paper extends the information theoretic formulation of multi-access completion time to broadcast channel and interference channel, enabling us to obtain the so-called completion time region (CTR), which, analogous to capacity region, characterizes all possible trade-offs between users' completion times. Specifically, for Gaussian broadcast channel (GBC) and Gaussian interference channel (GIC) in the stro…
This paper investigates a joint source-channel secrecy problem for the Shannon cipher broadcast system. We suppose list secrecy is applied, i.e., a wiretapper is allowed to produce a list of reconstruction sequences and the secrecy is measured by the minimum distortion over the entire list. For discrete communication cases, we propose a permutation-based uncoded scheme, which cascades a random permutation with a symbol-by-symbol mapping. Using this scheme, we derive an inner bound for the admissible region of secret key rate, list rate, wiretapper distortion, and distortions of legitimate user…
This paper focuses on the Layered Packet Erasure Broadcast Channel (LPE-BC) with Channel Output Feedback (COF) available at the transmitter. The LPE-BC is a high-SNR approximation of the fading Gaussian BC recently proposed by Tse and Yates, who characterized the capacity region for any number of users and any number of layers when there is no COF. This paper provides a comparative overview of this channel model along the following lines: First, inner and outer bounds to the capacity region (set of achievable rates with backlogged arrivals) are presented: a) a new outer bound based on the idea…
