The problem of channel coding over the Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel (BC) with additive independent Gaussian states is considered. The states are known in a noncausal manner to the encoder, and it wishes to minimize the amount of information that the receivers can learn from the channel outputs about the state sequence. The state leakage rate is measured as a normalized blockwise mutual information between the state sequence and the channel outputs' sequences. We employ a new version of a state-dependent extremal inequality and show that Gaussian input maximizes the state-dependent version of Marton's outer bound. Further we show that our inner bound coincides with the outer bound. Our result generalizes previously studied scalar Gaussian BC with state and MIMO BC without state.
We study the problem of coding over a general discrete memoryless broadcast channel controlled by random parameters. The parameters are available at the transmitter in a non-causal manner and are subject to a state masking constraint on the receivers. We derive inner and outer bounds on the achievable region and show that for the special case of Gaussian broadcast channel with private messages, these bounds are tight.
Optimizing energy efficiency (EE) for the MIMO broadcasting channels (BC) is considered in this paper, where a practical power model is taken into account. Although the EE of the MIMO BC is non-concave, we reformulate it as a quasiconcave function based on the uplink-downlink duality. After that, an energy efficient iterative waterfilling scheme is proposed based on the block-coordinate ascent algorithm to obtain the optimal transmission policy efficiently, and the solution is proved to be convergent. Through simulations, we validate the efficiency of the proposed scheme and discuss the system…
This letter investigates the energy efficiency (EE) scaling law for the broadcasting channels (BC) with many users, in which the non-ideal transmit independent power consumption is taken into account. We first consider the single antenna case with $K$ users, and derive that the EE scales as $\frac{\log_2 \ln K}α$ when $α> 0$ and $\log_2 K$ when $α= 0$, where $α$ is the normalized transmit independent power. After that, we extend it to the general MIMO BC case with a $M$-antenna transmitter and $K$ users each with $N$ antennas. The scaling law becomes $\frac{M \log_2 \ln NK}α$ when $α> 0$ and $…
A novel distributed space-time block code (STBC) for the next generation mobile TV broadcasting is proposed. The new code provides efficient performance within a wide range of power imbalance showing strong adaptivity to the single frequency network (SFN) broadcasting deployments. The new code outperforms existing STBCs with equivalent decoding complexity and approaches those with much higher complexities.
The downlink of a massive MIMO system is considered for the case in which the base station must concurrently serve two categories of terminals: one group to which imperfect instantaneous channel state information (CSI) is available, and one group to which no CSI is available. Motivating applications include broadcasting of public channels and control information in wireless networks. A new technique is developed and analyzed: joint beamforming and broadcasting (JBB), by which the base station beamforms to the group of terminals to which CSI is available, and broadcasts to the other group of te…
We consider simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) in MIMO Broadcast networks where one energy harvesting (EH) user and one information decoding (ID) user share the same time and frequency resource. In contrast to previous SWIPT systems based on the information rate, this paper addresses the problem in terms of the weighted minimum mean squared error (WMMSE) criterion. First, we formulate the WMMSE-SWIPT problem which minimizes the weighted sum-MSE of the message signal arrived at the ID user, while satisfying the requirement on the energy that can be harvested from the s…
This paper investigates the distributed space-time (ST) coding proposals for the future Digital Video Broadcasting--Next Generation Handheld (DVB-NGH) standard. We first theoretically show that the distributed MIMO scheme is the best broadcasting scenario in terms of channel capacity. Consequently we evaluate the performance of several ST coding proposals for DVB-NGH with practical system specifications and channel conditions. Simulation results demonstrate that the 3D code is the best ST coding solution for broadcasting in the distributed MIMO scenario.
Wireless power transfer (WPT) is a promising new solution to provide convenient and perpetual energy supplies to wireless networks. In practice, WPT is implementable by various technologies such as inductive coupling, magnetic resonate coupling, and electromagnetic (EM) radiation, for short-/mid-/long-range applications, respectively. In this paper, we consider the EM or radio signal enabled WPT in particular. Since radio signals can carry energy as well as information at the same time, a unified study on simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) is pursued. Specifically, th…
We propose a scalable video broadcasting scheme over MIMO-OFDM systems. The scalable video source layers are channel encoded and modulated into independent signal streams, which are then transmitted from the allocated antennas in certain time-frequency blocks. Each receiver employs the successive group decoder to decode the signal streams of interest by treating other signal streams as interference. The transmitter performs adaptive coding and modulation, and transmission antenna and subcarrier allocation, based on the rate feedback from the receivers. We also propose a hybrid receiver that sw…
This paper considers a basic MIMO information-energy (I-E) broadcast system, where a multi-antenna transmitter transmits information and energy simultaneously to a multi-antenna information receiver and a dual-functional multi-antenna energy receiver which is also capable of decoding information. Due to the open nature of wireless medium and the dual purpose of information and energy transmission, secure information transmission while ensuring efficient energy harvesting is a critical issue for such a broadcast system. Assuming that physical layer security techniques are applied to the system …
In this paper, we design space-time block codes (STBCs) to broadcast the common information omnidirectionally in a massive MIMO downlink. To reduce the burden of the downlink channel estimation and achieve partial spatial diversity from base station (BS) transmit antennas, we propose channel-independently precoded low-dimensional STBC. The precoding matrix and the signal constellation in the low-dimensional STBC are jointly designed to guarantee omnidirectional coverage at any instant time and sufficiently utilize the power amplifier capacities of BS transmit antennas, and at the same time, ac…

In a recent work, a capacity-achieving scheme for the common-message two-user MIMO broadcast channel, based on single-stream coding and decoding, was described. This was obtained via a novel joint unitary triangularization which is applied to the corresponding channel matrices. In this work, the triangularization is generalized, to any (finite) number of matrices, allowing multi-user applications. To that end, multiple channel uses are jointly treated, in a manner reminiscent of space-time coding. As opposed to the two-user case, in the general case there does not always exist a perfect (capac…
This paper investigates reliable and covert transmission strategies in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wiretap channel with a transmitter, receiver and an adversarial wiretapper, each equipped with multiple antennas. In a departure from existing work, the wiretapper possesses a novel capability to act either as a passive eavesdropper or as an active jammer, under a half-duplex constraint. The transmitter therefore faces a choice between allocating all of its power for data, or broadcasting artificial interference along with the information signal in an attempt to jam the eavesdropper (…
In this paper, while considering the impact of antenna correlation and the interference from neighboring users, we analyze channel estimation and training sequence design for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) two-way relay (TWR) systems. To this end, we propose to decompose the bidirectional transmission links into two phases, i.e., the multiple access (MAC) phase and the broadcasting (BC) phase. By considering the Kronecker-structured channel model, we derive the optimal linear minimum mean-square-error (LMMSE) channel estimators. The corresponding training designs for the MAC and BC phases are…
The problem of jamming on multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian channels is investigated in this paper. In the case of a single target legitimate signal, we show that the existing result based on the simplification of the system model by neglecting the jamming channel leads to losing important insights regarding the effect of jamming power and jamming channel on the jamming strategy. We find a closed-form optimal solution for the problem under a positive semi-definite (PSD) condition without considering simplifications in the model. If the condition is not satisfied and the optimal so…
