We study the evolution of the \eep cross section on nuclei with increasing asymmetry between the number of neutrons and protons. The calculations are done within the framework of the nonrelativistic and relativistic distorted-wave impulse approximation. In the nonrelativistic model phenomenological Woods-Saxon and Hartree-Fock wave functions are used for the proton bound-state wave functions, in the relativistic model the wave functions are solutions of Dirac-Hartree equations. The models are first tested against experimental data on $^{40}$Ca and $^{48}$Ca nuclei, and then they are applied to a set of spherical calcium isotopes.

Off-the-energy-shell pp scattering in the exclusive proton knockout 12C(p,2p) reaction at 392 MeV
Microscopics of meson degrees of freedom in nucleons and mesons in nuclei - what can be seen in the process of quasielastic knockout of mesons by high-energy electrons
The isoscalar $pn$ pair is expected to emerge in nuclei having the similar proton and neutron numbers but there is no clear experimental evidence for it. We aim to clarify the correspondence between the $pn$ pairing strength in many-body calculation and the triple differential cross section (TDX) of proton-induced deuteron knockout ($p,pd$) reaction on $^{16}$O. The radial wave function of the isoscalar $pn$ pair with respect to the center of $^{16}$O is calculated with the energy density functional (EDF) approach and is implemented in the distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA) framework.…
Knockout nuclear reactions, in which a nucleon is removed from a nucleus as a result of the collision with another nucleus, have been widely used as an experimental tool, both to populate isotopes further removed from stability, and to obtain information about the single-particle nature of the nuclear spectrum. In order to fully exploit the experimental information, theory is needed for the description of both the structure of the nuclei involved, and the dynamics associated with the nucleon removal mechanisms. The standard approach, using theoretical shell-model spectroscopic factors for the …
Our model, based on Quantum Chromodynamics, emphasizes the role of triton clustering in nuclei. As there is good empirical support of triton clustering in nuclei, we may even treat this as a good phenomenological working hypothesis as well. Here we show how our model finds remarkable success in being able to provide a consistent and interconnected understanding of such diverse empirical realities as the missing electric-charge in quasielastic electron scattering, and simultaneously, also the puzzling data within the studies of exotic nuclei. This gives us confidence, that our model should be t…
To discuss the dineutron correlation in the ground state, the quasi-free neutron knockout reaction on $^6$He is investigated. In the present work, the momentum distribution of the two emitted neutrons is calculated with the $α$~+~$n$~+~$n$ three-body model and a simple reaction model to assess the effects of the knockout process via the $^5$He resonance and the target dependence in the momentum distribution. A clear signature of the dineutron correlation can be obtained by choosing the kinematical condition so the process via the $^5$He resonance is excluded because the $^5$He resonance drastic…
The $α$-decay phenomennon has been studied for more than a century but the mechanism of the $α$ particle formation and its tunneling process have not yet been fully understood. As an alternative to the $α$-decay lifetime measurement, we propose the proton-induced $α$ knockout reaction, ($p$,$pα$), as a new probe for the surface $α$ formation probability of $α$-decay nuclei. The $^{210,212}$Po($p$,$pα$)$^{206,208}$Pb reaction is described by the distorted-wave impulse approximation framework. It shows that the $^{212}$Po/$^{210}$Po ratio of the $α$ knockout cross sections agrees with that of th…
Background: Proton-induced α-knockout reactions empower direct experimental manifestations of α-clustering in nuclei. This is obtained by relating the theoretical descriptions of clustering states with experimental reaction observables. It is desired to introduce microscopic structure models into the theoretical frameworks for α-knockout reactions. Purpose: Our goal is to probe the α-clustering in $^{10}$Be nucleus by proton-induced α-knockout reaction observables. Method: We adopt an extended version of the Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-Röpke (THSR) wave function of $^{10}$Be and integrate it with …
Background: One-nucleon knockout reactions provide insightful information on the single-particle structure of nuclei. When applied to one-neutron halo nuclei, they are purely peripheral, suggesting that they could be properly modeled by describing the projectile within a Halo Effective Field Theory (Halo-EFT). Purpose: We reanalyze the one-neutron knockout measurements of $^{11}$Be and $^{15}$C-both one-neutron halo nuclei-on beryllium at about 60MeV/nucleon. We consider Halo-EFT descriptions of these nuclei which already provide excellent agreement with breakup and transfer data. Method: We i…
Halo nuclei are located far from stability and exhibit a very peculiar structure. Due to their very short lifetime, they are often studied through reactions. Breakup reactions are of particular interest since their cross sections are large for these loosely-bound nuclei. Inclusive measurements of breakup--also called knockout reactions--have even higher statistics. In this proceeding, we study which nuclear-structure information can be inferred from the parallel-momentum distribution of the core of one-neutron halo nuclei after the knockout of its halo neutron. In particular, we analyse the in…
Short-range correlations (SRC) in asymmetric nuclei with an unusual neutron-to-proton ratio can be studied with quasi-free two-nucleon knockout processes following the collision between accelerated ions and a proton target. We derive an approximate factorized cross section for those SRC-driven $p(A,p^{\prime} N_1 N_2)$ reactions. Our reaction model hinges on the factorization properties of SRC-driven $A(e, e^\prime N_1 N_2)$ reactions for which strong indications are found in theory-experiment comparisons. In order to put our model to the test we compare its predictions with results of $^{12}\…
Background: Information about the structure of halo nuclei are often inferred from one-neutron knockout reactions. Typically the parallel-momentum distribution of the remaining core is measured after a high-energy collision of the exotic projectile with a light target. Purpose: We study how the structure of halo nuclei affects knockout observables considering an eikonal model of reaction. Method: To evaluate the sensitivity of both the diffractive and stripping parallel-momentum distributions to the structure of halo nuclei, we consider several descriptions of the projectile within a halo effe…
Background. Knockout reactions with proton targets provide an invaluable tool to access the properties of two-neutron halo nuclei. Recently, experimental results for the average opening angle as a function of the intrinsic neutron momentum in 11Li have shown a localization of dineutron correlations on the nucleus surface. Purpose. Study the model dependence and the effect of distortion and absorption on the opening angle distributions to assess the reliability of this observable to extract properties of Borromean two-neutron halo nuclei. Method. A quasifree sudden model is used to describe the…
We present a high-resolution in-beam $γ$-ray spectroscopy study of excited states in the mirror nuclei $^{55}$Co and $^{55}$Ni following one-nucleon knockout from a projectile beam of $^{56}$Ni. The newly determined partial cross sections and the $γ$-decay properties of excited states provide a test of state-of-the-art nuclear structure models and probe mirror symmetry in unique ways. A mirror asymmetry for the partial cross sections leading to the two lowest $3/2^-$ states in the $A = 55$ mirror pair was identified as well as a significant difference in the $E1$ decays from the $1/2^+_1$ stat…

Background: Recent theoretical and experimental researches using proton-induced $α$-knockout reactions provide direct manifestation of $α$-cluster formation in nuclei. In recent and future experiments, $α$-knockout data are available for neutron-rich beryllium isotopes. In $^{12}$Be , rich phenomena are induced by the formation of $α$-clusters surrounded by neutrons, for instance, breaking of the neutron magic number $N=8$. Purpose: Our objective is to provide direct probing of the $α$-cluster formation in the $^{12}$Be target through associating the structure information obtained by a microsc…
Understanding of inclusive one-nucleon knockout reactions for long-lived fission fragments (LLFPs) is crucial for nuclear transmutation studies. However, the particle and heavy ion transport code system (PHITS) severely overshoots the inclusive one-nucleon knockout cross sections sigma_-1N. Therefore development of a reaction model for describing the inclusive one-nucleon knockout processes is necessary. A key is specification of the position and the momentum of a nucleon inside a nucleus to be struck by the incident nucleon. In this paper the semiclassical distorted wave model incorporating t…
Background: Exclusive two-nucleon knockout after electroexcitation of nuclei ($A(e,e'NN)$ in brief) is considered to be a primary source of information about short-range correlations (SRC) in nuclei. For a proper interpretation of the data, final-state interactions (FSI) need to be theoretically controlled. Purpose: Our goal is to quantify the role of FSI effects in exclusive $A(e,e'pN)$ reactions for four target nuclei representative for the whole mass region. Our focus is on processes that are SRC driven. We investigate the role of FSI for two characteristic detector setups corresponding wit…
An isoscalar $pn$ pair is expected to emerge in nuclei that have similar proton and neutron numbers and it may be a candidate for a deuteron ``cluster.'' There is, however, no experimental evidence for it. The purpose of this paper is to construct a new reaction model for the ($p,pd$) reaction including the deuteron breakup in the elementary process and the deuteron reformation by the final-state interactions (FSIs). How these processes contribute to the observables of the reaction is investigated. The distorted wave impulse approximation is extended in twofold. The elementary processes of the…
We discuss recent \emph{ab initio} calculations based on self-consistent Green's function theory. It is found that a simple extension of the formalism to account for two-nucleon scattering outside the model space allows to calculate non-soft interactions. With this, it is possible to make predictions for Lattice QCD potentials, obtained so far at pion masses of $m_π= 0.47$GeV/c$^2$. More traditional calculations that use saturating chiral EFT forces yield a good description of nuclear responses and nucleon knockout spectroscopy.
Applications of configuration mixing methods for nuclei near the proton and neutron drip lines are discussed. A short review of magic numbers is presented. Prospects for advances in the regions of four new "outposts" are highlighted: $^{28}$O, $^{42}$Si, $^{60}$Ca and $^{78}$Ni. Topics include: shell gaps, single-particle properties, islands-of-inversion, collectivity, neutron decay, neutron halos, two-proton decay, effective charge, and quenching in knockout reactions.
