The isoscalar $pn$ pair is expected to emerge in nuclei having the similar proton and neutron numbers but there is no clear experimental evidence for it. We aim to clarify the correspondence between the $pn$ pairing strength in many-body calculation and the triple differential cross section (TDX) of proton-induced deuteron knockout ($p,pd$) reaction on $^{16}$O. The radial wave function of the isoscalar $pn$ pair with respect to the center of $^{16}$O is calculated with the energy density functional (EDF) approach and is implemented in the distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA) framework. The $pn$ pairing strength $V_0$ in the EDF calculation is varied and the corresponding change in the TDX is investigated. A clear $V_0$ dependence of the TDX is found for the $^{16}$O($p,pd$)$^{14}$N($1_2^+$) at $101.3$ MeV. The nuclear distortion is found to make the $V_0$ dependence stronger. Because of the clear $V_0$-TDX correspondence, the ($p,pd$) reaction will be a promising probe for the isoscalar $pn$ pair in nuclei. For quantitative discussion, further modification of the description of the reaction process will be necessary.

We consider constraints on the isoscalar S-wave pi-N scattering length a+ from pi-deuteron scattering, to third order in small momenta and pion masses in chiral perturbation theory. To this order, the pi-deuteron scattering length is determined by a+ together with three-body corrections that involve no undetermined parameters. We extract a novel value for a combination of dimension two low-energy constants which is in agreement with previous determinations.
A new model for short-range isoscalar currents in the deuteron and in the NN system is developed; it is based on the generation of an intermediate dibaryon which is the basic ingredient for the medium- and short-range NN interaction which was proposed recently by the present authors. This new current model can very well describe the experimental data for the three basic deuteron observables of isoscalar magnetic type, viz. the magnetic moment, the circular polarization of the photon in the $np\to dγ$ process at thermal neutron energies and the structure function B up to Q$^2$=60 fm$^{-2}$.
An isoscalar $pn$ pair is expected to emerge in nuclei that have similar proton and neutron numbers and it may be a candidate for a deuteron ``cluster.'' There is, however, no experimental evidence for it. The purpose of this paper is to construct a new reaction model for the ($p,pd$) reaction including the deuteron breakup in the elementary process and the deuteron reformation by the final-state interactions (FSIs). How these processes contribute to the observables of the reaction is investigated. The distorted wave impulse approximation is extended in twofold. The elementary processes of the…
Following precise experimental studies at the Duke Free-Electron Laser Laboratory, we discuss photodisintegration of deuterons with 100% linearly polarized photons using a model independent theoretical approach taking together $M1$ and $E1$ amplitudes simultaneously. The isoscalar $M1_s$ contribution is also taken exactly into account. From the existing experimental measurement on doubly polarized thermal neutron capture, it is seen that the isoscalar $M1_s$ contribution could be of the same order of magnitude as the experimentally measured cross sections at energies relevant to Big Bang Nucle…
Theoretical predictions for the deuteron and the isoscalar trinucleon charge form factors are compared. Correlations between them are found. Linear relations hold for the position of the diffraction minimum and for the position and height of the secondary maximum. The linear relation for the diffraction minimum misses the experimental data.
The polarization degrees of freedom in photoinduced two-nucleon knockout from finite nuclei are studied. It is pointed out that they open good perspectives to study the dynamics of dinucleons in the medium in detail. The ($γ,pp$) and ($γ,pn$) angular cross sections, photon asymmetries and outgoing nucleon polarizations are calculated for the target nuclei $^{16}$O and $^{12}$C and photonenergies ranging from 100 up to 500 MeV. It is investigated to which degree the two-nucleon emission reaction is dominated by photoabsorption on $^3S_1(T=0)$ proton-neutron and $^1S_0(T=1)$ proton-proton pairs …
The isoscalar and isovector scattering lengths (b_0,b_1) are determined using a unitarized coupled channel approach based on chiral Lagrangians. Using experimental values of pionic hydrogen and deuterium as well as low energy pi N scattering data, the free parameters of the model are calculated. Isospin violation is incorporated to a certain extent by working with physical particle masses. For the deuterium scattering length a_{pi-d} new significant corrections concerning real and imaginary parts are evaluated, putting new constraints from pi-d scattering on the values of (b_0,b_1). In particu…
The production near threshold of isoscalar pion pairs in the pd -> 3He(pi pi)^0 reaction is estimated in a two-step model which successfully describes the production of eta, omega and eta' mesons. A virtual pion beam, generated through an NN -> d pi reaction on one of the nucleons in the deuteron, produces a second pion via a pi N -> pi pi N reaction on the other nucleon. Using the same scale factor as for heavy meson production, the model reproduces the total pi^0 pi^0 production rate determined at an excess energy of 37 MeV. There are some indications in the data for a suppression of events …
Coherent photoproduction of two neutral pions on the deuteron and ^3He is calculated. The isoscalar and isovector parts of the elementary photoproduction amplitude was determined by fitting the measured total cross section on protons and neutrons. The dependence of the cross section on the isospin of the target nucleus is discussed.
We examine neutral-current quasi-elastic neutrino-nucleus reactions on $^{12}$C and $^{208}$Pb targets. We use the relativistic mean field theory approach to describe the nuclear dynamics. We compute the cross sections for the scattering of 150-MeV, 500-MeV and 1000-MeV neutrinos on a $^{12}$C target and study the effect of the strange-quark content of the nucleon which appears in these reactions via the isoscalar weak current. We compare our results with the data of the MiniBooNE experiment for mineral oil (CH$_2$). We also calculate the cross section for the quasi-elastic neutron knockout re…
Neutral-current neutrino scattering from the deuteron leading to proton-neutron final states is considered using an approach that incorporates relativistic dynamics and consequently provides robust modeling at relatively high energies and momenta. In this work the focus is placed on the fully exclusive reaction where both the proton and neutron in the final state are assumed to be detected. Accordingly, the incident neutrino energy, the neutrino scattering angle and the scattered neutrino's energy can all be reconstructed. It is shown that for specific choices of kinematics the reaction procee…
On the basis of the generalized eikonal approximation we study the exclusive reactions $\bar p d \to J/ψ\, n$ and $\bar p d \to ψ^\prime\, n$ in vicinity of the thresholds for charmonium production on a free proton target. It is shown that the rescattering of the incoming antiproton and outgoing charmonium on the spectator neutron leads to a depletion of the charmonium production at low- and to an enhancement at high transverse momenta. This is in qualitative agreement with previous studies of hard proton knockout in proton-deuteron collisions. We analyze different physical sources of uncertai…
A model combining self-consistent mean-field and shell-model techniques is used to study the competition between particle like and proton-neutron pairing correlations in fp-shell even-even self-conjugate nuclei. Results obtained using constant two-body pairing interactions as well as more sophisticated interactions are presented and discussed. The standard BCS calculations are systematically compared with more refined approaches including correlation effects beyond the independent quasi-particle approach. The competition between proton-neutron correlations in the isoscalar and isovector channe…
We review several experimental and theoretical advances that emphasise common aspects of the study of T=1 and T=0 pairing correlations in nuclei. We first discuss several empirical evidences of the special role played by the T=1 pairing interaction. In particular, we show the peculiar features of the nuclear pairing interaction in the low density regime, and possible outcomes such as the BCS-BEC crossover in nuclear matter and, in an analogous way, in loosely bound nuclei. We then move to the competition between T=1 and T=0 pairing correlations. The effect of such competition on the low-lying …
This dissertation explores two main topics: 1) Color Transparency and quasi-elastic knockout reactions involving pions and $ρ$ mesons; and 2) determination of the $J/ψ$-nucleon scattering amplitude and scattering length via $J/ψ$ electroproduction on the deuteron. It is shown that at the energies available at the COMPASS experiment at CERN, Color Transparency should be detectable in the reaction $π+A\to π+p+(A-1)^*$ (proton knockout). It is also shown that Color Transparency should be detectable in the electroproduction reaction $γ^*+A\toρ+p+(A-1)^*$ at small $Q^2$ (where $Q^2$ is the virtuali…
Nuclei in the $sd$-shell demonstrate a remarkable interplay of cluster and mean-field phenomena. The $N=Z$ nuclei, such as $^{24}$Mg and $^{28}$Si, have been the focus of the theoretical study of both these phenomena in the past. The cluster and vortical mean-field phenomena can be probed by excitation of isoscalar monopole and dipole states in scattering of isoscalar particles such as deuterons or $α$ particles. Inelastically scattered $α$ particles were momentum-analysed in the K600 magnetic spectrometer at iThemba LABS, Cape Town, South Africa. The scattered particles were detected in two m…
Just as $^3\roarrow{\rm He}$ can be approximately characterized as a polarized neutron target, polarized \Li6D has been advocated as a good {\em isoscalar} nuclear target for the extraction of the polarized gluon content of the nucleon. The original argument rests upon a presumed ``alpha + deuteron'' picture of \Li6, with the polarization of the nucleus carried by the polarization of the deuteron. We have calculated the polarization of the constituents of \Li6 as a three-body bound state of $α+ n + p$ interacting with local potentials fitted to the scattering data. It is necessary to include p…
We study Compton scattering in systems with A=1 and 2 using chiral perturbation theory up to fourth order. For the proton we fit the two undetermined parameters in the O(Q^4) $γ$p amplitude of McGovern to experimental data in the region $ω,\sqrt{|t|} \leq 180$ MeV, obtaining a chi^2/d.o.f. of 133/113. This yields a model-independent extraction of proton polarizabilities based solely on low-energy data: alpha_p=12.1 +/- 1.1 (stat.) +/- 0.5 (theory) and beta_p=3.4 +/- 1.1 (stat.) +/- 0.1 (theory), both in units of 10^{-4} fm^3. We also compute Compton scattering on deuterium to O(Q^4). The $γ$d …
We present a model for weak CC induced nuclear reactions at energies of interest for current and future neutrino oscillation experiments. This model is a natural extension of the work of Refs.[1,2], where the QE contribution to the inclusive electron and neutrino scattering on nuclei was analyzed. The model is based on a systematic many body expansion of the gauge boson absorption modes that includes one, two and even three body mechanisms, as well as the excitation of Delta isobars. The whole scheme has no free parameters, besides those previously adjusted to the weak pion production off the …
We present the results of lattice QCD calculations of the magnetic moments of the lightest nuclei, the deuteron, the triton and ${}^3$He, along with those of the neutron and proton. These calculations, performed at quark masses corresponding to $m_π\sim 800$ MeV, reveal that the structure of these nuclei at unphysically heavy quark masses closely resembles that at the physical quark masses. In particular, we find that the magnetic moment of ${}^3$He differs only slightly from that of a free neutron, as is the case in nature, indicating that the shell-model configuration of two spin-paired prot…
The role of neutron-proton pairing correlations on the structure of nuclei along the $N=Z$ line is reviewed. Particular emphasis is placed on the competition between isovector ($T=1$) and isoscalar $(T=0$) pair fields. The expected properties of these systems, in terms of pairing collective motion, are assessed by different theoretical frameworks including schematic models, realistic Shell Model and mean field approaches. The results are contrasted with experimental data with the goal of establishing clear signals for the existence of neutron-proton ($np$) condensates. We will show that there …

Compton scattering provides important insight into the structure of the nucleon. For photons up to about 300 MeV, it is parameterised by six dynamical dipole polarisabilities which characterise the response of the nucleon to a monochromatic photon of fixed frequency and multipolarity. Their zero-energy limit yields the well-known static electric and magnetic dipole polarisabilities αand β, and the four dipole spin polarisabilities. Chiral Effective Field Theory (ChiEFT) describes nucleon, deuteron and 3-He Compton scattering, using consistent nuclear currents, rescattering and wave functions. …
The coalescence model based on nucleon distribution functions from an isospin-dependent transport model is used to study the production of light clusters such as deuteron, triton, and $^{3}$He from heavy-ion collisions induced by neutron-rich nuclei at intermediate energies. It is found that the emission time of light clusters depends on their masses. For clusters with the same momentum per nucleon, heavier ones are emitted earlier. Both the yield and energy spectrum of light clusters are sensitive to the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy, with more light clusters produced in the c…
