We propose an experimental feasible method for controlling the atomic currents of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate in a double well by applying an external field to the atoms in one of the potential wells. We study the ground-state properties of the system and show that the directions of spin currents and net-particle tunneling can be manipulated by adiabatically varying the coupling strength between the atoms and the field. This system can be used for studying spin and tunneling phenomena across a wide range of interaction parameters. In addition, spin-squeezed states can be generated. It is useful for quantum information processing and quantum metrology.
For optical Raman coherent effect we introduce the atomic coherent state (or the angular momentum coherent state with various angular momemtum values) in Schwinger bosonic realization, they are the eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian describing the Raman effect. Similar to the fact that the photon coherent state describes laser light, the atomic coherent state is related to Raman process.
We present two simple designs of matter-wave beam splitters in a trapped Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC). In our scheme, identical pairs of atomic solitons are produced by an adequate control --- in time and/or space --- of the scattering length. Our analysis is performed by numerical integration of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and supported by several analytic estimates. Our results show that these devices can be implemented in the frame of current BEC experiments. The system has potential applications for the construction of a soliton interferometer.
We propose to realize a passive optical quantum swapping device which allows for the exchange of the quantum fluctuations of two bright optical fields interacting with a coherent atomic medium in an optical cavity. The device is based on a quantum interference process between the fields within the cavity bandwidth arising from coherent population trapping in the atomic medium.
Introducing classical fields, we can transfer entanglement completely from discrete qubits into entangled coherent state. The entanglement also can be retrieved from the continuous-variable state of the cavities to the atomic qubits. Via postselection measure, atomic entangled state and entangled coherent state can be mutual transformed fully.
In this paper, we present a scheme to generate an entangled coherent state by considering a three-level Λ- type atom interacting with a two-mode cavity driven by classical fields. The two-mode entangled coherent state can be obtained under large detuning conditions. Considering the cavity decay, an analytical solution is deduced.
We demonstrate ultrafast coherent coupling between an atomic qubit stored in a single trapped cadmium ion and a photonic qubit represented by two resolved frequencies of a photon. Such ultrafast coupling is crucial for entangling networks of remotely-located trapped ions through photon interference, and is also a key component for realizing ultrafast quantum gates between Coulomb-coupled ions.
We propose a hybrid quantum-classical atomic clock protocol where the interrogation of an ensemble of uncorrelated atoms in a spin-coherent state is used to feedback one (or more) spin-squeezed atomic ensembles toward their optimal phase sensitivity point. This protocol overcomes the stability of a single Ramsey clock and it reaches a Heisenberg-limited stability while avoiding non-destructive measurements. Analytical predictions are compared with numerical simulations of clocks operations including correlated 1/f local oscillator noise.
We propose a scheme for creating atomic coherent superpositions via stimulated Raman adiabatic passage in a Lambda-type system where the final state has twofold levels. In the employ of a control field, the presence of double dark states leads to two arbitrary coherent superposition states with equal amplitude but inverse relative phase without the condition of multi-photon resonance. In particular, two orthogonal maximal coherent superposition states are created when the control field is resonant with the transition of the twofold levels. This scheme can also be extended to manifold Lambda-ty…
Theoretical prediction of antilocalization of light in ultracold atomic gas samples, in the weak localization regime, is reported. Calculations and Monte-Carlo simulations show that, for selected spectral ranges in the vicinity of atomic 85Rb hyperfine transitions, quantum coherence in optical transitions through nondegenerate hyperfine levels in multiple light scattering generates destructive interference in otherwise reciprocal scattering paths. This effect leads to enhancement factors less than unity in a coherent backscattering geometry, and suggests the possibility of enhanced diffusion o…
By using a quantized input light, we theoretically revisit the coherent two-color photo-association process in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. Under the single-mode approximations, we show two interesting regimes of the light transmission and the molecular generation. The quantum state transfer from light to molecules is exhibited, without or with the depletion of trapped atoms.
Coherent diffusion pertains to the motion of atomic dipoles experiencing frequent collisions in vapor while maintaining their coherence. Recent theoretical and experimental studies on the effect of coherent diffusion on key Raman processes, namely Raman spectroscopy, slow polariton propagation, and stored light, are reviewed in this Colloquium.
A scheme for preparation of coherent superposition of Fock states of electromagnetic field is constructed. The superposition state is created inside the cavity via a strong interaction of a four-level atom with quantum field of the cavity and classic laser fields. We demonstrate the possibility to create desired arbitrary superposition of the cavity Fock states just by changing the relative delay of the fields. Then, as another application of our model, we study a means of creating entanglement of neutral four-level atoms using different sequences of interactions with the cavity and laser fiel…
We report on the simultaneous observation, by delayed Bragg diffraction, of four- and six-wave mixing processes in a coherently prepared atomic ensemble consisting of cold cesium atoms. For each diffracted order, we observe different temporal pulse shapes and dependencies with the intensities of the exciting fields, evidencing the different mechanisms involved in each process. The various observations are well described by a simplified analytical theory, which considers the atomic system as an ensemble of three-level atoms in Λ configuration.
Coherent control of collective spontaneous emission in an extended atomic ensemble resonantly interacting with single-photon wave packets is analyzed. A scheme for coherent manipulation of collective atomic states is developed such that superradiant states of the atomic system can be converted into subradiant ones and vice versa. Possible applications of such a scheme for optical quantum state storage and single-photon wave packet shaping are discussed. It is shown that also in the absence of inhomogeneous broadening of the resonant line, single-photon wave packets with arbitrary pulse shape m…
We report on coherent and multi-temporal mode storage of light using the full atomic frequency comb memory scheme. The scheme involves the transfer of optical atomic excitations in Pr3+:Y2SiO5 to spin-waves in the hyperfine levels using strong single-frequency transfer pulses. Using this scheme, a total of 5 temporal modes are stored and recalled on-demand from the memory. The coherence of the storage and retrieval is characterized using a time-bin interference measurement resulting in visibilities higher than 80%, independent of the storage time. This coherent and multimode spin-wave memory i…
We show that the $N$-photon generalized binomial states of electromagnetic field may be put in a bijective mapping with the coherent atomic states of $N$ two-level atoms. We exploit this correspondence to simply obtain both known and new properties of the $N$-photon generalized binomial states. In particular, an over-complete basis of these binomial states and an orthonormal basis are obtained. Finally, the squeezing properties of generalized binomial state are analyzed.
Scalable and efficient quantum computation with photonic qubits requires (i) deterministic sources of single-photons, (ii) giant nonlinearities capable of entangling pairs of photons, and (iii) reliable single-photon detectors. In addition, an optical quantum computer would need a robust reversible photon storage devise. Here we discuss several related techniques, based on the coherent manipulation of atomic ensembles in the regime of electromagnetically induced transparency, that are capable of implementing all of the above prerequisites for deterministic optical quantum computation with sing…
The adiabatic solutions of Maxwell-Bloch equation governing the three-level EIT medium is presented. The time evolution of the density matrix elements of the EIT system and the probe light is thus investigated by using the adiabatic approximation formulation and the slowly varying envelope condition.
Protocols for quantum communication between massive particles, such as atoms, are usually based on transmitting nonclassical light, and/or super-high finesse optical cavities are normally needed to enhance interaction between atoms and photons. We demonstrate a surprising result: an unknown quantum state can be teleported from one free-space atomic ensemble to the other by transmitting only coherent light. No non-classical light and no cavities are needed in the scheme, which greatly simplifies its experimental implementation.
Using the eigenvalue definition of binomial states we construct new intermediate number-coherent states which reduce to number and coherent states in two different limits. We reveal the connection of these intermediate states with photon-added coherent states and investigate their non-classical properties and quasi-probability distributions in detail. It is of interest to note that these new states, which interpolate between coherent states and number states, neither of which exhibit squeezing, are nevertheless squeezed states. A scheme to produce these states is proposed. We also study the in…
A scheme for the optimal Gaussian cloning of coherent light states at the light-atoms interface is proposed. The distinct feature of this proposal is that the clones are stored in an atomic quantum memory, which is important for applications in quantum communication. The atomic quantum cloning machine requires only a single passage of the light pulse through the atomic ensembles followed by the measurement of a light quadrature and an appropriate feedback, which renders the protocol experimentally feasible. An alternative protocol, where one of the clones is carried by the outgoing light pulse…
We describe a technique for generating pulses of light with controllable photon numbers, propagation direction, timing, and pulse shapes. The technique is based on preparation of an atomic ensemble in a state with a desired number of atomic spin excitations, which is later converted into a photon pulse. Spatio-temporal control over the pulses is obtained by exploiting long-lived coherent memory for photon states and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in an optically dense atomic medium. Using photon counting experiments we observe generation and shaping of few-photon sub-Poissonian…
We describe a new method of coherent optical control of internal dynamics of atomic collisions by means of two correlated light beams having entangled polarizations. We show that if excitation of a colliding pair of atoms is by two photons having entangled polarizations, it is possible to redirect the output fragments of the collision into certain channels with a selected type of internal transition symmetry. The transition symmetry is defined in the body-fixed coordinate frame which has random and originally unknown orientation in space.
We experimentally demonstrate the coherent manipulation of atomic states in far-detuned dipole traps and registers of dipole traps based on two-dimensional arrays of microlenses. By applying Rabi, Ramsey, and spin-echo techniques, we systematically investigate the dephasing mechanisms and determine the coherence time. Simultaneous Ramsey measurements in up to 16 dipole traps are performed and proves the scalability of our approach. This represents an important step in the application of scalable registers of atomic qubits for quantum information processing. In addition, this system can serve a…
We analyze a double $Λ$ atomic configuration interacting with two signal beams and two control beams. Because of the quantum interference between the two $Λ$ channels, the four fields are phase-matched in electromagnetically induced transparency. Our numerical simulation shows that this system is able to manipulate synchronous optical signals, such as generation of optical twin signals, data correction, signal transfer and amplification in the atomic storage.
We review experimental and theoretical studies of coherent backscattering of near resonant radiation from an ultracold atomic gas in the weak localization regime. Recent accomplishments in high resolution spectroscopy of atomic ensembles based on the coherent backscattering process are discussed. We also propose several new experimental schemes for time-dependent spectroscopy as applied to multiple scattering in the regime of weak localization.
We investigate theoretically the optical properties of an atomic gas which has been cooled by the laser cooling method velocity-selective coherent population trapping. We demonstrate that the application of a weak laser pulse gives rise to a backscattered pulse, which is a direct signal for the entanglement in the atomic system, and which leads to single-particle entanglement on the few-photon level. If the pulse is applied together with the pump lasers, it also displays the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency. We suggest that the effect should be observable in a gas of Rubi…
We discuss methods for coherently controlling mesoscopic atomic ensembles where the number of atoms varies randomly from one experimental run to the next. The proposed schemes are based on adiabatic passage and Rydberg blockade and can be used for implementation of a scalable quantum register formed by an array of randomly loaded optical dipole traps.
Quantum theoretical treatment of coherent forward scattering of light in a polarized atomic ensemble with an arbitrary angular momentum is developed. We consider coherent forward scattering of a weak radiation field interacting with a realistic multi-level atomic transition. Based on the concept of an effective Hamiltonian and on the Heisenberg formalism, we discuss the coupled dynamics of the quantum fluctuations of the polarization Stokes components of propagating light and of the collective spin fluctuations of the scattering atoms. We show that in the process of coherent forward scattering…
We report on the realization of dynamical control of transport for ultra-cold Sr88 atoms loaded in an accelerated and amplitude-modulated 1D optical lattice. We tailor the energy dispersion of traveling wave packets and reversibly switch between Wannier-Stark localization and driven transport based on coherent tunneling. Within a Loschmidt-echo scheme where the atomic group velocities are reversed at once, we demonstrate a novel mirror for matter waves working independently of the momentum state and discuss possible applications to force measurements at micrometric scales.
We analyze the nonlinear optical response of a six-level atomic system under a configuration of electromagnetically induced transparency. The giant fifth-order nonlinearity generated in such a system with a relatively large cross-phase modulation effect can produce efficient three-way entanglement and may be used for realizing a three-qubit quantum phase gate. We demonstrate that such phase gate can be transferred to a Toffoli gate, facilitating practical applications in quantum information and computation.
We investigate the spontaneous emission from an inverted Y-type atomic system coupled by three coherent fields. We use the Schrödinger equation to calculate the probability amplitudes of the wave function of the system and derive an analytical expression of the spontaneous emission spectrum to trace the origin of the spectral features. Quantum interference effects, such as the spectral line narrowing, spectrum splitting and dark resonance are observed. The number of spectral components, the spectral linewidth, and relative heights can be very different depending on the physical parameters. A v…
We introduce a protocol for dynamical dispersion engineering in an atomic chain consisting of an ordered array of multi-level atoms with subwavelength lattice constant. This chain supports dark states that are protected from dissipation in the form of photon emission and can be understood as propagating spin waves traveling along the array. By using an external control field with a spatially-varying elliptical polarization we correlate internal and external degrees of freedom of the array in a controllable way. The coherent control over the atomic states translates into control over the group …
We investigate the problem of propagation of three-component resonant light pulses with adiabatically varying amplitudes through a medium consisting of atoms with the tripod level configuration. By means of both analytic and numerical methods we found the two modes of shape-preserving pulse propagation. The pulse propagation velocity is found to be either equal to the speed of light or significantly slowed down, depending on a particular propagation mode.
We study the interaction of two photons in a Rydberg atomic ensemble under the condition of electromagnetically induced transparency, combining a semi-classical approach for pulse propagation and a complete quantum treatment for quantum state evolution. We find that the blockade regime is not suitable for implementing photon-photon cross-phase modulation due to pulse absorption and dispersion. However, approximately ideal cross-phase modulation can be realized based on relatively weak interactions, with counter-propagating and transversely separated pulses.
We present a quantum interference approach to preserve coherence in the external states of an atom trapped in an optical lattice. We show that this is possible by suitably choosing the initial state of the atom. We demonstrate this in context of decoherence due to spontaneous emission in an one-dimensional optical double-well lattice.
Motivated by the recent experiment [V.A. Sautenkov, Yu.V. Rostovtsev, and M.O. Scully, Phys. Rev. A 72, 065801 (2005)], we develop a theoretical model in which the field intensity fluctuations resulted from resonant interaction of a dense atomic medium with laser field having finite bandwidth. The intensity-intensity cross correlation between two circular polarized beams can be controlled by the applied external magnetic field. A smooth transition from perfect correlations to anti-correlations (at zero delay time) of the outgoing beams as a function of the magnetic field strength is observed. …
Coherent transport of atoms trapped in an optical lattice can be controlled by microwave-induced spin flips that correlate with site-to-site hopping. We study the controllability of homogeneous one-dimensional systems of noninteracting atoms in the absence of site addressability. Given these restrictions, we construct a deterministic protocol to map an initially localized Wannier state to a wave packet that that is coherently distributed over n sites. This is extended to analytic solutions for arbitrary unitary maps given homogenous systems and in the presence of time-dependent uniform forces.…
Quantum technologies are built on the power of coherent superposition. Atomic coherence is typically generated from optical coherence, most often via Rabi oscillations. However, canonical coherent states of light create imperfect resources; a fully-quantized description of "$\tfracπ{2}$ pulses" shows that the atomic superpositions generated remain entangled with the light. We show that there are quantum states of light that generate coherent atomic states perfectly, with no residual atom-field entanglement. These states can be found for arbitrarily short times and approach slightly-number-sque…
For an asymmetric double-well potential system, it is shown that, if the potential is quadratic until it reaches several times of the zero-point energies from the bottoms in each well, the energy eigenvalues of the low lying excited states of the double-well system must be close to the eigenvalues of the quadratic potentials. These eigenvalue structures suggest a method for the coherent control of the tunneling as well as realizing almost complete localization of the wave packet in one of the wells, by handling the double-well asymmetry. Numerical examples are included to indicate that the met…
We report a combined theoretical and experimental study of the spectral and polarization dependence of near resonant radiation coherently backscattered from an ultracold gas of 85Rb atoms. Measurements in an approximately 6 MHz range about the 5s^{2}S_{1/2}- 5p^{2}P_{3/2}, F=3 - F'=4 hyperfine transition are compared with simulations based on a realistic model of the experimental atomic density distribution. In the simulations, the influence of heating of the atoms in the vapor, magnetization of the vapor, finite spectral bandwidth, and other nonresonant hyperfine transitions are considered. G…
We show that coherent multiple light scattering, or diffuse light propagation, in a disordered atomic medium, prepared at ultra-low temperatures, can be be effectively delayed in the presence of a strong control field initiating a stimulated Raman process. On a relatively short time scale, when the atomic system can preserve its configuration and effects of atomic motion can be ignored, the scattered signal pulse, diffusely propagating via multiple coherent scattering through the medium, can be stored in the spin subsystem through its stimulated Raman-type conversion into spin coherence. We de…
We demonstrate how to use feedback to control the internal states of trapped coherent ensembles of two-level atoms, and to protect a superposition state against the decoherence induced by a collective noise. Our feedback scheme is based on weak optical measurements with negligible back-action and coherent microwave manipulations. The efficiency of the feedback system is studied for a simple binary noise model and characterized in terms of the trade-off between information retrieval and destructivity from the optical probe. We also demonstrate the correction of more general types of collective …
We show that coherently driven atomic or molecular media potentially yield strong controllable short pulses of THz radiation. The method is based on excitation of maximal quantum coherence in a gas medium by optical pulses and coherent scattering of infra-red radiation to produce pulses of THz radiation. The pulses have the energies range from several nJ to $μ$J and time durations from several fs to ns at room temperature.
We have detected and analyzed narrow, high contrast coherent population trapping resonances, which appear in transmission of the probe monochromatic light beam under action of the counterpropagating two-frequency laser radiation, on example of the nonclosed three level Λ-system formed by spectral components of the Doppler broadened D2 line of cesium atoms (in the cell with the rarefied Cs vapor). These nontrivial resonances are determined directly by the trapped atomic population on the definite lower level of the Λ-system and may be used in atomic frequency standards, sensitive magnetometers …
We demonstrate the coherent transport of two-dimensional (2D) arrays of small ensembles of neutral atoms in a shift register architecture based on 2D arrays of microlenses. We show the scalability of the transport process by presenting the repeated hand-over of atoms from site to site. We prove the conservation of coherence during transport, reloading, and a full shift register cycle. This shows that the fundamental shift sequence can be cascaded and thus scaled to complex and versatile 2D architectures for atom-based quantum information processing, quantum simulation, and the investigation of…
The transfer technique of quantum states from light to collective atomic excitations in a double $Λ$ type system is extended to matter waves in this paper, as a novel scheme towards making a continuous atom laser. The intensity of the output matter waves is found to be determined by the initial relative phase of the two independent coherent probe lights, which may indicate an interesting method for the measurement of initial relative phase of two independent light sources.
WaveguideQEDoffers the possibility of generating strong coherent atomic interactions either through appropriate atomic configurations in the dissipative regime or in the bandgap regime. In this work, we show how to harness these interactions in order to herald the generation of highly entangled atomic states, which afterwards can be mapped to generate single mode multi-photonic states with high fidelities.Weintroduce two protocols for the preparation of the atomic states, we discuss their performance and compare them to previous proposals. In particular, we show that one of them reaches high p…
We report on a direct visualization of coherent destruction of tunneling (CDT) of light waves in a double well system which provides an optical analog of quantum CDT as originally proposed by Grossmann, Dittrich, Jung, and Hanggi [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 67}, 516 (1991)]. The driven double well, realized by two periodically-curved waveguides in an Er:Yb-doped glass, is designed so that spatial light propagation exactly mimics the coherent space-time dynamics of matter waves in a driven double-well potential governed by the Schrödinger equation. The fluorescence of Er ions is exploited to image t…
The evolution of the quantum wave packet describing an atom trapped in the surface-tip junction of the scanning tunneling microscope is investigated by using the time-dependent Schroedinger equation, and by a quasi-classical Hamiltonian approach. The estimates concern a Xe atom in a biased double-well junction potential. The exact treatment shows that quantum coherence oscillations of the metastable ground state may occur at particular resonant values of the bias voltage. The effect of decoherence by partial localization is studied within the quasi-classical frame.
Free electrons provide a powerful tool to probe material properties at atomic-scale spatial resolution. Recent advances in ultrafast electron microscopy enable the manipulation of free electron wavefunctions using laser pulses. It would be of great importance if one could combine the spatial resolution of electron probes with the ability of laser pulses to probe coherent phenomena in quantum systems. To this end, we propose a novel technique that leverages free electrons that are coherently-shaped by laser pulses to measure quantum coherence in materials. Developing a quantum theory of electro…
Long-range quantum communication requires the development of in-out light-matter interfaces to achieve a quantum advantage in entanglement distribution. Ideally, these quantum interconnections should be as fast as possible to achieve high-rate entangled qubits distribution. Here, we demonstrate the coherent quanta exchange between single photons generated on-demand from a GaAs quantum dot and atomic ensemble in a $^{87}$Rb vapor quantum memory. Through an open quantum system analysis, we demonstrate the mapping between the quantized electric field of photons and the coherence of the atomic ens…
We report the experimental observation of Coherent Population Oscillation (CPO) based light storage in an atomic vapor cell at room temperature. Using the ultranarrow CPO between the ground levels of a $Λ$ system selected by polarization in metastable $^4$He, such a light storage is experimentally shown to be phase preserving. As it does not involve any atomic coherences it has the advantage of being robust to dephasing effects such as small magnetic field inhomogeneities. The storage time is limited by the population lifetime of the ground states of the $Λ$ system.
