We consider a switched (queuing) network in which there are constraints on which queues may be served simultaneously; such networks have been used to effectively model input-queued switches and wireless networks. The scheduling policy for such a network specifies which queues to serve at any point in time, based on the current state or past history of the system. In the main result of this paper, we provide a new class of online scheduling policies that achieve optimal queue-size scaling for a class of switched networks including input-queued switches. In particular, it establishes the validity of a conjecture (documented in Shah, Tsitsiklis and Zhong [Queueing Syst. 68 (2011) 375-384]) about optimal queue-size scaling for input-queued switches.
Consider a switched queueing network with general routing among its queues. The MaxWeight policy assigns available service by maximizing the objective function $\sum_j Q_j σ_j$ among the different feasible service options, where $Q_j$ denotes queue size and $σ_j$ denotes the amount of service to be executed at queue $j$. MaxWeight is a greedy policy that does not depend on knowledge of arrival rates and is straightforward to implement. These properties, as well as its simple formulation, suggest MaxWeight as a serious candidate for implementation in the setting of switched queueing networks; M…
In this paper, I develop a generalized method to approximate end-to-end delay (average delay, jitter and density functions) in packet-switched networks (PSNs) of any size under 1) Kleinrock's independence assumption (KIA) and 2) when packet lengths are kept unchanged when they traverse from node to node in a network, which is an Alternative to Kleinrock's independence assumption (AKIA). I introduce a new phase-type distribution $C(\mathbf{p},\boldsymbol θ)$; and then use results from the network flow theory and queueing theory to show that the end-to-end delay in PSNs under KIA and AKIA are tw…

We consider the optimal control of input-queued switches under a cost-weighted variant of MaxWeight scheduling, for which we establish theoretical properties that include showing the algorithm exhibits optimal heavy-traffic queue-length scaling. Our results are expected to be of theoretical interest more broadly than input-queued switches.
Discrete-time queueing system has widespread applications in packet switching networks, internet protocol, Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (B-ISDN), circuit switched time-division multiple access etc. In this paper, we analyze an infinite-buffer discrete-time group-arrival queue with single and multiple vacation policy where processing/transmission/service times dynamically vary with batch-size under service. The bivariate probability generating function of queue length and server content distribution has been derived first, and from that we extract the probabilities in terms of …
This paper considers the steady-state performance of load balancing algorithms in a many-server system with distributed queues. The system has $N$ servers, and each server maintains a local queue with buffer size $b-1,$ i.e. a server can hold at most one job in service and $b-1$ jobs in the queue. Jobs in the same queue are served according to the first-in-first-out (FIFO) order. The system is operated in a heavy-traffic regime such that the workload per server is $λ= 1 - N^{-α}$ for $0.5\leq α<1.$ We identify a set of algorithms such that the steady-state queues have the following universal s…
This note describes several open questions concerning scaling limits of queue-length processes of symmetric queues in heavy traffic, distinguishing between service-time distributions with finite and infinite variance.
We examine a queue-based random-access algorithm where activation and deactivation rates are adapted as functions of queue lengths. We establish its heavy traffic behavior on a complete interference graph, which turns out to be highly nonstandard in two respects: (1) the scaling depends on some parameter of the algorithm and is not the $N/N^2$ scaling usually found in functional central limit theorems; (2) the heavy traffic limit is deterministic. We discuss how this nonstandard behavior arises from the idleness induced by the distributed nature of the algorithm. In order to prove our main res…
Consider a system of $N$ parallel single-server queues with unit-exponential service time distribution and a single dispatcher where tasks arrive as a Poisson process of rate $λ(N)$. When a task arrives, the dispatcher assigns it to one of the servers according to the Join-the-Shortest Queue (JSQ) policy. Eschenfeldt and Gamarnik (2015) established that in the Halfin-Whitt regime where $(N-λ(N))/\sqrt{N}\toβ>0$ as $N\to\infty$, appropriately scaled occupancy measure of the system under the JSQ policy converges weakly on any finite time interval to a certain diffusion process as $N\to\infty$. R…
We consider a two-node tandem queueing network in which the upstream queue is GI/GI/1 and each job reuses its upstream service requirement when moving to the downstream queue. Both servers employ the first-in-first-out policy. To investigate the evolution of workload in the second queue, we introduce and study a process M, called the plateau process, which encodes most of the information in the workload process. We focus on the case of infinite-variance service times and show that under appropriate scaling, workload in the first queue converges, and although the workload in the second queue do…
We study a sequence of single server queues with customer abandonment (GI/GI/1+GI) under heavy traffic. The patience time distributions vary with the sequence, which allows for a wider scope of applications. It is known ([20, 18]) that the sequence of scaled offered waiting time processes converges weakly to a reflecting diffusion process with non-linear drift, as the traffic intensity approaches one. In this paper, we further show that the sequence of stationary distributions and moments of the offered waiting times, with diffusion scaling, converge to those of the limit diffusion process. Th…
Functional central limit theorems for a large network in which customers join the shortest of several queues
大数定律(laws of large numbers,LLN)。
We consider the model of a token-based joint auto-scaling and load balancing strategy, proposed in a recent paper by Mukherjee, Dhara, Borst, and van Leeuwaarden (SIGMETRICS '17, arXiv:1703.08373), which offers an efficient scalable implementation and yet achieves asymptotically optimal steady-state delay performance and energy consumption as the number of servers $N\to\infty$. In the above work, the asymptotic results are obtained under the assumption that the queues have fixed-size finite buffers, and therefore the fundamental question of stability of the proposed scheme with infinite buffer…
Cryptocurrency networks such as Bitcoin have emerged as a distributed alternative to traditional centralized financial transaction networks. However, there are major challenges in scaling up the throughput of such networks. Lightning network and Spider network are alternates that build bidirectional payment channels on top of cryptocurrency networks using smart contracts, to enable fast transactions that bypass the Blockchain. In this paper, we study the problem of routing transactions in such a payment processing network. We first propose a Stochastic model to study such a system, as opposed …
We study an optimal-control problem of polling systems with large switchover times, when a holding cost is incurred on the queues. In particular, we consider a stochastic network with a single server that switches between several buffers (queues) according to a pre-specified order, assuming that the switchover times between the queues are large relative to the processing times of individual jobs. Due to its complexity, computing an optimal control for such a system is prohibitive, and so we instead search for an asymptotically optimal control. To this end, we first solve an optimal control pro…
We discuss joint spatial-temporal scaling limits of sums $A_{λ,γ}$ (indexed by $(x,y) \in \mathbb{R}^2_+$) of large number $O(λ^γ)$ of independent copies of integrated input process $X = \{X(t), t \in \mathbb{R}\}$ at time scale $λ$, for any given $γ>0$. We consider two classes of inputs $X$: (I) Poisson shot-noise with (random) pulse process, and (II) regenerative process with random pulse process and regeneration times following a heavy-tailed stationary renewal process. The above classes include several queueing and network traffic models for which joint spatial-temporal limits were previou…
