The measurement of pion source radii in Pb-Pb collisions with the ALICE experiment at LHC is presented. By the analysis of Bose-Einstein enhancement in the correlation function of identical pions information on the size and evolution of the source region in space-time can be obtained. The source radii observed at LHC are larger than at RHIC, approximately scaling with the cube root of the particle multiplicity. A decrease of source radii with increasing pair momentum, indicating a collective expansion of the medium, was observed at RHIC and SPS and is also expected at LHC energies. The ALICE data confirm this and provide strict constraints on dynamical models describing the medium expansion. The results suggest that the created fireball has a higher temperature and a longer lifetime as compared to lower energies.
We present the first measurement of pion source radii in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. The radii were obtained by analyzing the Bose-Einstein enhancement in two-pion correlation functions. Like at lower energies, the radii drop with increasing transverse momentum, indicating presence of collective expansion. In absolute terms, all three radii (Rout, Rside, Rlong) are larger than at RHIC, roughly consistent with a linear scaling with the cube root of the particle multiplicity.
We present the results for direct photon and neutral pion production obtained from proton-proton and lead-lead collisions in the ALICE experiment. Measurement of neutral pions in pp collisions allows to test the validity of QCD-inspired models. The study of neutral pion yields in Pb-Pb collisions permits to study the medium-induced suppression relative to the pp case. The yield of direct photons is compared to perturbative QCD calculations. In the case of central Pb-Pb collisions the observed excess of photons below 4 GeV/c is used to find the effective temperature of the matter.
Femtoscopic correlations between charged pions and kaons for different charge combinations are measured in Pb$-$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=2.76$ TeV with ALICE at the LHC. The three-dimensional pion-kaon ($π-{\rm K}$) correlation functions and double ratios in the out-side-long pair rest frame are studied in different centrality bins. The $π-{\rm K}$ femtoscopic source size parameter ($R_{\rm out}$) and emission asymmetry ($μ_{\rm out}$) are extracted. It is observed that the average source size of the system and the emission asymmetry between pions and kaons increase from peripheral …
Invariant cross sections for neutral pions and eta mesons in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 0.9, 2.76, and 7 TeV were measured by the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD calculations describe the pi0 and eta spectra at 0.9 TeV, but overestimate the measured cross sections at 2.76 TeV and 7 TeV. The measured eta/pi0 ratio is consistent with mT scaling at 2.76 TeV. At 7 TeV indications for a violation of mT scaling were found.
We present the results of two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations measured in Pb--Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy sqrt(s_NN) = 2.76 TeV recorded by ALICE at the Large Hadron Collider. These types of correlations allow to extract, using the technique of femtoscopy (also known as Hanburry-Brown Twiss interferometry, or shortly HBT), the space-time characteristics of the source from the correlation calculated as a function of the pair momentum difference. The femtoscopic analysis was performed using both the Spherical Harmonics decomposition and the standard 3D Cartesian representation of th…
Femtoscopy of non-central heavy ion collisions provides access to information on the geometry of the effective pion-emitting source. In particular, the source shape can be studied by measuring femtoscopic radii as a function of the pion emission angle relative to the collision symmetry planes. We present the results of azimuthally differential femtoscopy of Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV at the LHC relative to the second harmonic event plane. We observe a clear oscillation of the extracted radii as a function of the emission angle. We find that $R_{side}$ and $R_{out}$ oscillate …
Azimuthally differential femtoscopic measurements, being sensitive to spatio-temporal characteristics of the source as well as to the collective velocity fields at freeze-out, provide very important information on the nature and dynamics of the system evolution. While the HBT radii modulations relative to the second harmonic event plane reflect mostly the spatial geometry of the source, the third harmonic results are mostly defined by the velocity fields. Radii variations with respect to the third harmonic event plane unambiguously signal a collective expansion and anisotropy in the flow field…
Measurements of direct photon and neutral pion production in heavy-ion collisions provide a comprehensive set of observables characterizing properties of the hot QCD medium. Direct photons provide means to test the initial stage of an AA collision and carry information about the temperature and space-time evolution of the hot medium. Neutral pion suppression probes the parton energy loss in the hot medium. Measurements of neutral meson spectra in pp collisions at LHC energies $\sqrt{s}=$0.9, 2.76, 7 TeV serve as a reference for heavy-ion collisions and also provide valuable input data for para…
The particle identification capabilities of the ALICE experiment are unique among the four major LHC experiments. The working principles and excellent performance of the central barrel detectors in a high-multiplicity environment are presented as well as two physics examples: the extraction of transverse momentum spectra of charged pions, kaons, protons, and the observation of the anti-4He-nucleus.
We report recent results from the ALICE experiment at the LHC for minimum bias pp collisions. This overview includes results on inelastic cross section, with analysis of single and double diffractive events; the study of hadron production mechanisms, both for inclusive and identified particles; Bose-Einstein correlations; and fluctuations in $<p_T>$
Three- and four-pion Bose-Einstein correlations are presented in pp, p-Pb, and Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. We compare our measured four-pion correlations to the expectation derived from two- and three-pion measurements. Such a comparison provides a method to search for coherent pion emission. We also present mixed-charge correlations in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of several analysis procedures such as Coulomb corrections. Same-charge four-pion correlations in pp and p-Pb appear consistent with the expectations from three-pion measurements. However, the presence of non-negligible b…
An overview of recent ALICE results aimed to understand collective phenomena in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC is presented. These include the centrality dependence of the transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) distributions of charged pions, kaons, and protons as well as results on anisotropic flow using data from Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV. In addition, comparisons between data and model predictions are presented.
Measurement of quantumstatistical correlation functions in high energy nuclear physics is an important tool to investigate the QCD phase diagram. It may be used to search for the critical point, and also to understand underlying processes such as in-medium mass modifications or partially coherent particle production. Furthermore, the measurements of the femtoscopic correlation functions shed light on the space-time structure of particle production. Consequently, the precise measurements and description of the correlation functions are essential. The shape of two-pion Bose-Einstein correlation …
By studying the balance functions of several hadronic species, one can gain insight into the chem-ical evolution of the Quark \textendash Gluon Plasma and radial flow. In a picture of early hadronisation, pairs of particles and anti-particles (created at the same space \textendash time point) are separated furtherin rapidity due to the higher initial temperature and diffusive interactions with other particles. Therefore delayed hadronisation will lead to strong correlations in rapidity in the final state. In this work, balance functions for identified charged-pion pairs measured by the ALICE det…
In November 2010 the ALICE experiment at CERN has collected the first Pb--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV produced by the LHC. A first characterization of the hot and dense state of matter produced in this new energy domain became available shortly after the run. In this paper we present the results on charged-particle multiplicity, Bose-Einstein correlations, elliptic flow and their dependence on the collision centrality. Results from first measurements of strange and identified particle production and suppression of high-momentum hadrons with respect to $pp$ collisions are also r…
We present femtoscopic results for proton and Lambda correlation functions measured by ALICE in sqrt(sNN) = 2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions. Femtoscopic radii are extracted from pp, pbarpbar, and ppbar pairs. Comparisons of these radii with those from pion and kaon analyses reveal an approximate transverse mass scaling that is consistent with explanations of radial flow. Inelastic final state interactions are explored in baryon-antibaryon correlations functions to investigate their relationship with reduced proton yields at LHC energies.
Investigation of femtoscopic correlation functions in relativistic heavy ion reactions is an important tool to access the space-time structure of particle production in the sQGP. The shape of the correlation functions is often assumed to be Gaussian, but a detailed analysis reveals that the statistically correct assumption could be the so-called Lévy distribution. The detailed analysis of correlation functions in various systems may shed light on the location of the critical endpoint on the QCD phase diagram. It could also reveal if there is partially coherent pion production or could indicate…
Light flavour transverse momentum spectra at intermediate and high pT provide an important baseline for the measurement of perturbative QCD processes in pp, for the evaluation of initial state effects in p-Pb, and for investigating the suppression from parton energy loss in Pb-Pb collisions. The measurement of the nuclear modification factor RpPb for inclusive charged particles is extended up to 50 GeV/c in pT compared to our previous measurement and remains consistent with unity up the largest momenta. Results on RpPb of charged pions, kaons and protons that cover up to 14 GeV/c in pT are pre…
The Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) provides particle identification in the ALICE central barrel. In particular, it allows electron identification via the measurement of transition radiation for $\rm p >$ 1 GeV/$c$, where pions can no longer be rejected sufficiently via specific energy loss in the ALICE Time Projection Chamber. The ALICE TRD is uniquely designed to record the time evolution of the signal, which allows even better electron/pion separation. In addition, the electron identification capability of the TRD can be used on-line to trigger at level 1. The particle identification an…
We report on the studies of two-particle angular correlations measured in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded by ALICE at the LHC. Two-particle correlations in relative azimuth (Δϕ) and pseudorapidity (Δη) are expected to exhibit several structures which arise from different physics mechanisms and allow us to study the wide landscape of correlations. The results include the dependence of the correlation function on the event multiplicity, the charge combination and species (pions, kaons or protons) of particles in the pair.
In this paper, the first femtoscopic analysis of pion-kaon correlations at the LHC is reported. The analysis was performed on the Pb-Pb collision data at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}$ = 2.76 TeV recorded with the ALICE detector. The non-identical particle correlations probe the spatio-temporal separation between sources of different particle species as well as the average source size of the emitting system. The sizes of the pion and kaon sources increase with centrality, and pions are emitted closer to the centre of the system and/or later than kaons. This is naturally expected in a system with strong …
In late 2017, the ALICE experiment recorded a data sample of Xe--Xe collisions at the unprecedented energy in A--A systems of $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}} = 5.44\text{ TeV}$. The $p_{\rm T}$ spectra at mid-rapidity ($|y| < 0.5$) of pions, kaons and protons are presented. The preliminary $p_{\rm T}$ spectra are obtained by combining independent analyses with the Inner Tracking System (ITS), the Time Projection Chamber (TPC), and the Time-Of-Flight (TOF) detectors. This paper focuses on the details of the analysis performed with TOF and in particular on the performance implications of the special Xe--Xe …
We present the results on two-particle Bose-Einstein correlations measured in proton-proton collisions at center of mass energies of sqrt{s}=0.9 TeV, sqrt{s}=2.76 TeV and sqrt{s}=7 TeV registered by the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Detailed analysis reveals that the three dimensional experimental correlation functions do not have Gaussian shape in two dimensions. We found that they are better described by an exponential functional form in the outward and longitudinal directions, while the sideward remains a Gaussian. This is interpreted as a result of a significant contributi…
Multiplicity-dependent measurements of identified particle production led to the discovery of collective-like behavior in pp collisions at the LHC. Better understanding of the effects attributed to well-understood physics, like multiple hard scatterings, is required to establish whether this behaviour is truly collective in origin. Experimentally, those effects can be controlled using event shapes, like transverse spherocity, which allows the classification of pp collisions either as jetty or isotropic events. The transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) spectra of light-flavor hadrons in pp collisio…
The first measurement of two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations in central Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 2.76$ TeV at the Large Hadron Collider is presented. We observe a growing trend with energy now not only for the longitudinal and the outward but also for the sideward pion source radius. The pion homogeneity volume and the decoupling time are significantly larger than those measured at RHIC.
The ALICE experiment studies Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC in order to investigate the properties of the hot and dense QCD matter at extreme energy densities. Recent results from ALICE in identified particle flow allow for the exploration of the collective properties of the medium created in heavy-ion collisions. In this paper, I give special attention to strange and charm particles which probe the medium differently and thus provide new constraints for the study of its properties. The paper covers results on elliptic flow for pion, kaon, kzero, antiproton, phi, lambda, xi, omega, dplus, dzero a…
We report the first measurement of charged pion, kaon and (anti-)proton production in jets from hadron colliders. The measurement was carried out with the ALICE detector using $2\times10^8$ minimum bias pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV at the LHC. We present the $π$, K and p transverse momentum ($p_\textrm{T}$) spectra, as well as the spectra of the reduced momentum (${z^\textrm{ch}\equiv p_\textrm{T}^\textrm{track}/p_\textrm{T, jet}^\textrm{ch}}$), in charged jets of $p_\textrm{T}$ between 5--20 $\textrm{GeV}/c$. The measurement is compared to Monte Carlo calculati…
In this work the results on the transverse momentum distributions ($\sim0.3<p_{\rm T}<15$ GeV/$c$) of charged pions, kaons and (anti)protons, measured in $\rm pp$ and $\rm Pb-Pb$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=2.76$ TeV and in $\rm p-Pb$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02$ TeV, are presented. The evolution of the spectral shapes and particle ratios with multiplicity is shown and the similarities among the different systems are discussed.
ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is one of the seven experiments at the the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland. ALICE is especially designed for heavy-ion collisions but it also operates a rich proton-proton (pp) program. ALICE has collected pp collision data at $\sqrt{s}=$ 0.9, 2.36, 2.76, and 7 TeV and lead-lead (Pb--Pb) collision data at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=$2.76 TeV. Here, we report minimum bias measurements obtained until the end of 2010: the results include measurements of charged-particle pseudorapidity, multiplicity and transverse momentum distributions…
We present results of femtoscopic analysis with K0s-K0s, Kch-Kch, p-p, pbar-pbar, p-pbar and lambda-antilambda in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt{s_NN}=2.76 TeV and K0s-K0s in pp collisions at sqrt{s}=7 TeV registered by ALICE at the LHC. The femtoscopic radius is extracted from the one-dimensional correlation functions. The analysis reveals that the emission source sizes of pions, kaons and protons measured in heavy-ion collisions exhibit approximate transverse mass scaling which is consistent with hydrodynamic collectivity prediction. Furthermore, baryon-antibaryon correlations are investigated to …
The ALICE experiment has unique capabilities for particle identification at mid rapidity over a wide range of transverse momenta, making it an ideal tool for comprehensive measurements of hadrons such as charged pions, kaons, and protons as well as lambdas, K0s, and phi. The transverse momentum distributions and nuclear modification factors, R_pPb and R_PbPb, of these hadrons measured in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions are presented. Baryon-to-meson ratios exhibit a multiplicity-dependent enhancement at intermediate transverse momenta for both p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions, while no significant dynamics…
We report on the first measurement of the charged hadron composition in charged jets from pp collisions. The ALICE detector at the LHC was used to study charged pion, kaon and (anti-)proton production in jets. The results were extracted from $2 \times 10^8$ minimum bias events at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV. We present the transverse momentum ($p_{\mathrm{T}}$) spectra and reduced momentum spectra ($z^{\mathrm{ch}} \equiv p_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{track}} / p_{\mathrm{T, jet}}^{\mathrm{ch}}$) of $π$, K and p in charged jets with $p_{\mathrm{T, jet}}^{\mathrm{ch}}$ between 5 and…
The main goal of the ALICE experiment is to study the properties of the hot and dense medium created in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The measurement of the (multi-)strange particles is an important tool to understand particle production mechanisms and the dynamics of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). We report on the production of K$^{0}_{S}$, $Λ$($\overlineΛ$), $Ξ^{-}$($\overlineΞ^{+}$) and $Ω^{-}$($\overlineΩ^{+}$) in proton-lead (p-Pb) collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV and lead-lead (Pb-Pb) collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV measured by ALICE at the LHC. The com…
We report on the first measurements of elliptic and triangular flow for charged pions, kaons and anti-protons in lead-lead collisions at 2.76 TeV measured with the ALICE detector at the LHC. We compare the observed mass splitting of differential elliptic flow at LHC energies to RHIC measurements at lower energies and theory predictions. We test the quark coalescence picture with the quark number scaling of elliptic and triangular flow.
We report on the results of femtoscopic analyses of Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=2.76 TeV and pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$= 7 TeV with identical charged and neutral kaons. The femtoscopic correlations allow one to measure the space-time characteristics of particle production using particle correlations due to the effects of quantum statistics for identical particles and final state interaction for both identical and non-identical ones. Small contributions from resonance decays make kaon femtoscopy an ideal tool for the correlation studies. In conjunction with pion and proton femtoscopy, …
Two particle correlations are used to extract information about the characteristic size of the system for proton-proton collisions at 900 GeV measured by the ALICE (A Large Ion Collider experiment) detector at CERN. The correlation functions obtained show the expected Bose-Einstein effect for identical particles, but there are also long range correlations present that shift the baseline from the expected flat behavior. A possible source of these correlations is the conservation of energy and momentum, especially for small systems, where the energy available for particle production is limited. …
The ALICE experiment has studied strangeness production in different collision systems (pp, p-Pb, Xe-Xe and Pb-Pb) and energies. The ratio of the strange particle yield to pion yield as a function of multiplicity for different collision energies and systems follow a continuously increasing trend ("enhancement") from low multiplicity pp to high-multiplicity Pb-Pb collisions, independent of the initial collision energy and colliding particles. It is also observed that the enhancement is larger for the particles with larger strangeness content. Several other features that were observed in large c…
We report on the elliptic and triangular flow measurements for a number of hadrons including charged pions, and (anti-)protons, as well as those with strangeness content: kaons, ${\rm ϕ}$-meson, ${\rm K^0_s}$, ${\rm Λ/\barΛ}$, ${\rm Ξ}$, and ${\rm Ω}$. The results reported cover mid--rapidity, $|η|<0.8$, and a wide, $0.2 < p_{\rm T} < 16$ GeV/$c$, transverse momentum range for Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV recorded by ALICE at the LHC. The mass splitting and the scaling properties of the elliptic flow with the number of constituent quarks and the particle transverse mass a…
The event-by-event fluctuations of identified particles in ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions give information about the state of matter created in these collisions as well as the phase diagram of nuclear matter. In this proceedings, we present the latest results from ALICE on the centrality and pseudorapidity dependence of net-proton fluctuations, which are closely related to net-baryon fluctuations, as well as net-kaon and net-pion fluctuations. The effects of volume fluctuations and global baryon conservation on these observables are discussed. Furthermore, the correlated fluctuat…
We develop an event mixing technique with a missing mass consistency (MMC) cut and a pion energy (PE) cut for the measurement of two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations (BEC) in reactions with only two identical pions produced in the final state. A multi mixing mode that allows one event to be mixed with multiple other events is proposed for the purpose of improving the statistics of mixed samples, and compared with the single mixing mode which requires one original event can be mixed only once. Numerical tests using the γp -> π^0 π^0 p events are used to testify its ability to measure two-pion co…
We argue that the two-particle momentum correlation functions of high-multiplicity $p+p$ collisions at the LHC provide a signal for a ground state structure of a quasi equilibrium state of the longitudinally boost-invariant expanding quantum field which lies in the future light cone of a collision. The physical picture is that pions are produced by the expanding quantum emitter with two different scales approximately attributed to the expanding ideal gas in local equilibrium state and ground-state condensate. Specifically, we show that the effect of suppressing the two-particle Bose-Einstein m…
Results on the production of $π^{\pm}$, $\textrm{K}^{\pm}$, $\textrm{p}(\bar{\textrm{p}})$, $Λ(\barΛ)$, $Ξ^{-} \left(\barΞ^{+}\right)$ and $Ω^{-} \left(\barΩ^{+}\right)$ at midrapidity (${|y|<0.5}$) as a function of multiplicity in $\sqrt{s}~=~7~\textrm{TeV}$ pp collisions are reported. Transverse momentum distributions and integrated yields are compared to expectations from statistical hadronization models along with results from different colliding systems and center-of-mass energies. The evolution of spectral shapes with multiplicity show similar patterns to those seen in p-Pb and Pb-Pb col…
Identified particle spectra represent a crucial tool to understand the behavior of the matter created in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. The transverse momentum p_T distributions of identified hadrons contain informations about the transverse expansion of the system and constrain the freezeout properties of the matter created. The ALICE experiment has good particle identification performance over a broad p_T range. In this contribution the results for identified pions, kaons and protons in heavy-ion collisions at 2.76 TeV center-of-mass energy are presented. These results are compared with o…
ALICE is the experiment dedicated to the study of the quark gluon plasma in heavy-ion collisions at the CERN LHC. Improvements of ALICE sub-detectors are envisaged for the upgrade plans of year 2017. The Muon Forward Tracker (MFT) is a proposal in view of this upgrade, motivated both by the possibility to overcome the intrinsic limitations of the Muon Spectrometer, and by the possibility to perform new measurements of general interest for the whole ALICE physics. The measurement of the offset of single muons and dimuons will permit to disentangle open charm ($cτ\sim 150 μ$m) and beauty ($cτ\si…
The midrapidity $π^0$ nuclear modification factor, $R_{\rm{AA}}$, at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} =$ 2.76 TeV in 6 centrality classes as well as the corresponding $π^0$ invariant yields in Pb-Pb and in pp collisions are presented. The transverse momentum range covered is 0.6 (0.4) GeV/$c$ $< p_{\mathrm{T}} <$ 12 (10) GeV/$c$ for Pb-Pb (pp) collisions. A suppression of neutral pions increasing with centrality is observed. The yield of charged particles associated with a high $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ neutral pion trigger (8 GeV/$c$ $< p_{\mathrm{T}} <$ 16 GeV/$c$) is measured in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at $\sq…
The possibility of formation of Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) is studied in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt s$ = 7 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. A thermodynamically consistent non-extensive formulation of the identified hadron transverse momentum distributions is used to estimate the critical temperature required to form BEC of charged pions, which are the most abundant species in a multi-particle production process in hadronic and nuclear collisions. The obtained results have been contrasted with the systems produced in Pb-Pb collisions to have a better understanding. We observe an explicit …
We report on studies of untriggered two-particle angular correlations of identified particles (pions, kaons and protons) measured in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energy sqrt{s}=7 TeV recorded by ALICE at the LHC. These type of studies are sensitive to a wide range of correlations which arise from different physics mechanisms, each of them having a unique structure in DeltaEta-DeltaPhi space. The correlations of particles with different quark content and flavor are sensitive to various conservation laws. The study of these correlations is the main goal of this analysis. The result…
We report on the results of femtoscopic analysis of Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=2.76 TeV and pp collisions at sqrt(s)=0.9, 2.76 and 7 TeV with identical pions and kaons. Detailed femtoscopy studies in heavy-ion collisions at SPS and RHIC have shown that emission region sizes ("HBT radii") decrease with increasing pair transverse momentum k_T, which is understood as a manifestation of the collective behavior of matter. The trend was predicted to persist at the LHC. The data from Pb-Pb collisions confirm the existence of a flowing medium and provide strict constraints on the dynamical models.…
The study of event-by-event fluctuations of identified hadrons may reveal the degrees of freedom of the strongly interacting matter created in heavy-ion collisions and the underlying dynamics of the system. The observable $ν_{dyn}$, which is defined in terms of the moments of identified-particle multiplicity distributions, is used to quantify the magnitude of the dynamical fluctuations in event-by-event measurements of particle ratios. The ALICE detector at the LHC is well-suited for the study of $ν_{dyn}$, due to its excellent particle identification capabilities. Particle identification base…
We have developed an event mixing technique to observe Bose-Einstein correlations (BEC) between two identical neutral pions produced in photo-induced reactions in the non-perturbative QCD energy region. It is found that the missing-mass consistency cut and the pion-energy cut are essential for the event mixing method to effectively extract BEC observables. A Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is used to validate these constraints and confirms the efficiency of this method. Our work paves the way for similar BEC studies at lower energies where the multiplicity of emitted bosons is limited.
Multi-strange baryons are of particular interest in the understanding of particle production mechanisms, as their high strangeness content makes them susceptible to changes in the hadrochemistry of the colliding systems. In ALICE, these hyperons are reconstructed via the detection of their weak decay products, which are identified through their measured ionisation losses and momenta in the Time Projection Chamber. The production rates of charged $Ξ$ and $Ω$ baryons in proton-proton (pp), proton-lead (p-Pb) and lead-lead (Pb-Pb) collisions are reported as a function of $p_{\mathrm{T}}$. A direc…
The Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) for the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) identifies electrons in p+p and in the challenging high multiplicity environment of heavy-ion collisions and provides fast online tracking for the ALICE Level1 trigger. The TRD is designed to have excellent position resolution and pion rejection capability. Presently, six of the 18 TRD supermodules are installed in the ALICE central barrel. In 2008, four supermodules were installed and commissioning of the detector using cosmic ray tracks was successfully performed. We briefly describe the desig…
We present new results on transverse momentum spectra, integrated yields, and mean transverse momenta of pions, kaons, and protons, as well as of $ϕ$-mesons for various centrality classes measured in Pb-Pb and Xe-Xe collisions at the LHC. This unique set of data allows us to investigate bulk particle production for very different systems at similar multiplicities. The chemical and kinetic freeze-out parameters are extracted via statistical-thermal and combined blast-wave fits to the data in heavy-ion collisions and are compared to results obtained in pp and p-Pb collisions at similar multiplic…
One of the main goals of NA61/SHINE is the investigation of the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. NA61/SHINE observes collisions of various nuclei at different energies, allowing to study the same phenomena and observables in vastly different conditions. One of the observables related to the quark-hadron transition is the Bose-Einstein momentum correlation function of identical pions, related to the space-time structure of pion emission. In this paper we report on such measurements in Be+Be collisions at an SPS beam momentum of 150A GeV/c. Our correlation functions can be statistic…
We argue that the large instanton induced Pauli form factor in polarized proton-proton scattering may cause, through topological fluctuations, substantial charge-dependent azimuthal correlations for pi^+/pi^- production in peripheral heavy ion collisions both at RHIC and LHC, thanks to the large induced magnetic field. Our results compare favorably to the measured pion azimuthal correlations by the STAR and ALICE collaborations.
