Using the multiband model we analyze the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between the magnetic impurities in layered ferropnictide superconductors. In the normal state the interaction is spin isotropic and is dominated by the nesting features of the electron and hole bands separated by the antiferromagnetic momentum, ${\bf Q}_{AF}$. In the AF state the RKKY interaction maps into an effective anisotropic XXZ-type Heisenberg exchange model. The anisotropy originates from the breaking of the spin-rotational symmetry induced by the AF order and its strength depends on the size of the AF gap and the structure of the folded Fermi surface. We discuss our results in connection to the recent experiments.
The indirect RKKY interaction in iron pnictide and chalcogenide metals is calculated for a simplified four bands Fermi surface (FS) model. We investigate the specific multi-band features and show that distinct length scales of the RKKY oscillations appear. For the regular lattice of the local moments, the generalized RKKY interaction is defined in momentum space. We consider its momentum dependence in paramagnetic and spin density wave (SDW) phases, discuss its implications for the possible type of magnetic order and compare it to the results obtained from more realistic tight-binding type Fer…
Recent experimental studies have revealed several unexpected properties of Mn-doped BaFe2As2. These include extension of the stripe-like magnetic (pi,0) phase to high temperatures above a critical Mn concentration only, the presence of diffusive and weakly temperature dependent magnetic (pi,pi) checkerboard scattering, and an apparent absent structural distortion from tetragonal to orthorhombic. Here, we study the effects of magnetic impurities both below and above the Néel transition temperature within a real-space five-band model appropriate to the iron pnictides. We show how these experimen…
We argue that salient experimental features of the magnetic excitations in the SDW phase of iron-based superconductors can be understood within an itinerant model. We identify a minimal itinerant model and use a multi-band RPA treatment of the dynamical spin susceptibility. Weakly-damped spin-waves are found near the ordering momentum and it is shown how they dissolve into the particle-hole continuum. We show that ellipticity of the electron bands accounts for the anisotropy of the spin waves along different crystallographic directions and the gap at the momentum conjugated to the ordering one…
We investigate the quasiparticle relaxation and low-energy electronic structure in undoped SrFe_2As_2 exhibiting spin-density wave (SDW) ordering using optical pump-probe femtosecond spectroscopy. A remarkable critical slowing down of the quasiparticle relaxation dynamics at the SDW transition temperature T_SDW = 200K is observed. From temperature dependence of the transient reflectivity amplitude we determine the SDW-state charge gap magnitude, 2Delta_SDW/k_BT_SDW=7.2+-1. The second moment of the Eliashberg function, lambda<(hbar omega)^2>=110+-10meV^2, determined from the relaxation time abo…
In iron-based superconductors, a spin-density-wave (SDW) magnetic order is suppressed with doping and unconventional superconductivity appears in close proximity to the SDW instability. The optical response of the SDW order shows clear gap features: substantial suppression in the low-frequency optical conductivity, alongside a spectral weight transfer from low to high frequencies. Here, we study the detailed temperature dependence of the optical response in three different series of the Ba122 system [Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ and BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-…
Spin wave excitations and stability of the (0,pi) ordered SDW state are investigated within the minimal two-band model for iron pnictides including a Hund's coupling term. The SDW state is shown to be stable in two distinct doping regimes --- finite hole doping in the lower SDW band for small second neighbour hoppings, and small electron doping in the upper SDW band for comparable first and second neighbour hoppings. In both cases, Hund's coupling strongly stabilizes the SDW state due to generation of additional ferromagnetic spin couplings involving the inter-orbital part of the particle-hole…
Motivated by recent experiments in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ {[}A. E. Böhmer \textit{et al}, to be published{]}, we analyze the type of spin-density wave (SDW) order in doped iron-pnictides and the discontinuities of the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ in the coexistence phase with SDW magnetism. By tracking the magnetic transition line $T_{N}(x)$ towards optimal doping within an itinerant fermionic model, we find a sequence of transitions from the stripe-orthorhombic ($C_{2}$) SDW order to the tetragonal ($C_{4}$) order and then back to the $C_{2}$ order. We argue that …
We show the existence of an emergent SO(6) symmetry in the low energy description of the iron pnictides. This approximate symmetry provides a unifying framework for the occurrence of spin density wave (SDW) and superconductivity (SC) in these materials. We use this symmetry to make several predictions for future experiments, including the topology of the phase diagram and the presence of various resonant modes in neutron scattering experiments in both the SC and SDW phases. We also predict the existence of a new "Orbital Density Wave" state, which competes with both SDW and SC orders.
We propose an explanation for the electronic nematic state observed recently in parent iron-based superconductors [T.-M. Chuang et al., Science 327, 181 (2010)]. We argue that the quasi-one-dimensional nanostructure identified in the quasiparticle interference (QPI) is a consequence of the interplay of the magnetic ($π$, 0) spin-density wave (SDW) order with the underlying electronic structure. We show that the evolution of the QPI peaks largely reflects quasiparticle scattering between electronic bands involved in the SDW formation. Because of the ellipticity of the electron pocket and the fa…
A review of the magnetism in the parent compounds of the iron-based superconductors is given based on the transmission Moessbauer spectroscopy of 57Fe and 151Eu. It was found that the 3d magnetism is of the itinerant character with varying admixture of the spin-polarized covalent bonds. For the 122 compounds a longitudinal spin density wave (SDW) develops. In the case of the EuFe2As2 a divalent europium orders antiferromagnetically at much lower temperature as compared to the onset of SDW. These two magnetic systems remain almost uncoupled one to another. For the non-stoichiometric Fe(1+x)Te p…
We investigate the role of Hund's coupling in the spin-wave excitations of the ($π, 0$) ordered magnetic state within a five-orbital tight-binding model for iron pnictides. To differentiate between the roles of intraorbital Coulomb interaction and Hund's coupling, we focus on the self-consistently obtained mean-field SDW state with a fixed magnetic moment obtained by using different sets of interaction parameters. We find that the Hund's coupling is crucial for the description of various experimentally observed characteristics of the spin-wave excitations including the anisotropy, energy-depen…
We report ultrafast quasiparticle (QP) dynamics and coherent acoustic phonons in undoped CaFe_2As_2 iron pnictide single crystals exhibiting spin-density wave (SDW) and concurrent structural phase transition at temperature TSDW ~ 165 K using femtosecond time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy. The contributions in transient differential reflectivity arising from exponentially decaying QP relaxation and oscillatory coherent acoustic phonon mode show large variations in the vicinity of T_SDW. From the temperature-dependence of the QP recombination dynamics in the SDW phase, we evaluate a BCS-like …
In this paper, we investigate the quasiparticle scattering interference(QPI) in the nematic phase of iron pnictides, based on the magnetic and orbital scenarios of nematicity, respectively. In the spin density wave(SDW) state, the QPI pattern exhibits a dimer structure in the energy region of the SDW gap, with its orientation along the ferromagnetic direction of the SDW order. When the energy is increased to be near the Fermi level, it exhibits two sets of dimers along the same direction. The dimer structure of the QPI patterns persists with the decrease of the SDW correlation length in the ma…
Aimed at identifying the role of microscopic Hamiltonian parameters on spin wave excitations, orbital order, and magnetic moments in the $(π,0)$ SDW state, two different three band models for iron pnictides are compared --- one at two-third filling ($n=4$) and another at half filling $(n=3)$ --- both of which yield qualitatively correct Fermi surface structure in the paramagnetic state. Spin wave analysis of the model at $n=4$ shows instability of the SDW state, which is attributed to weakly developed magnetic moments and weak magnetic couplings due to overfilling, as inferred from the observe…
It is demonstrated that SC mechanism of doped Fe-based compounds is characteristic for itinerant electron systems with coexistence of both (e-e)- and (e-h)-pairing arising due to electron-phonon and Coulomb interactions, respectively. The higher Tc of the SC transition here (as compared with conventional (LTSC) BCS-systems without (e-h)-pairing) is a natural consequence of (e-e)-pairing at the background of high density of states which arises in the narrow energy range near dielectric-(SDW)-gap (pseudogap) edges due to removing of electronic states from the energy region of dielectric (SDW) ga…
The normal state of the iron arsenides shows the poor metallic behavior mixed with strong magnetic fluctuations. In particular, some FeAs-1111 and FeAs-122 compounds show the linear-T dependence of susceptibility above the spin-density wave (SDW) transition and the logarithmic upturn of resistivity at low temperatures. We suggest that this is due to the spin-flip scattering between the charge carriers and the local moments in the undoped FeAs layer where Kondo effect coexists with the SDW. This scenario is also accounted for the change of the magnetoresistance from positive to negative in the …
Spin waves in (0,pi) and (0,pi,pi) ordered spin-density-wave (SDW) states of the t-t' Hubbard model are investigated at finite doping. In the presence of small t', these composite ferro-antiferromagnetic (F-AF) states are found to be strongly stabilized at finite hole doping due to enhanced carrier-induced ferromagnetic spin couplings as in metallic ferromagnets. Anisotropic spin-wave velocities, spin-wave energy scale of around 200meV, reduced magnetic moment, and rapid suppression of magnetic order with electron doping x (corresponding to F substitution of O atoms in La O_{1-x} F_x Fe As or …
We investigate the spin-wave excitations in the spin-density wave state of doped iron pnictides within a five-orbital model. We find that the excitations along ($π, 0$)$\rightarrow$($π, π$) are very sensitive to the doping whereas they do not exhibit a similar sensitivity along ($0, 0$) $\rightarrow$ ($π, 0$). Secondly, anisotropy in the excitations around ($π, 0$) with an elliptical shape grows on moving towards the hole-doped region for low energy, whereas it decreases for the high-energy excitations on the contrary. Thirdly, spin-wave spectral weight shifts towards the low-energy region on …
We perform an analytical renormalization group (RG) study to address the role of Coulomb repulsion, the competition between extended s-wave superconducting order (s+-) and the spin-density wave (SDW) order and the angular dependence of the superconducting gap in multi-pocket models of Iron based superconductors. Previous analytic RG studies considered a toy model of one hole and one electron pocket. We consider more realistic models of two electron pockets and either two or three hole pockets, and also incorporate the angular dependence of interaction. We neglect for simplicity one of the two …
We report comprehensive resistivity measurements of single crystalline samples of the Ba(Fe(1-x)Co(x))2As2 high Tc superconductor under hydrostatic pressure up to 2.75 GPa and over a broad concentration range, 0 < x < 0.099. We show that application of pressure progressively suppresses the SDW transition temperature, T_SDW, in the underdoped regime. There is no sign of pressure-induced superconductivity in the undoped BaFe2As2 down to 1.8 K, but applied pressure dramatically enhances Tc in the underdoped regime. The effect of pressure on Tc is very small in the optimally and overdoped regimes.…
We study theoretically the coexistence of the spin-density-wave (SDW) and superconductivity in electron-doped iron-pnictide superconductors based on the two orbital model and Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. The phase diagram is mapped out and the evolution of the Fermi surface as the doping varies is presented. The local density of states (LDOS) has also been calculated from low to high doping. We show that the strength of the superconducting coherent peak at the positive energy gets enhanced and the one at the negative energy is suppressed by the SDW order in the underdoped region. Several fe…
In the limit of perfect nesting, the physics of iron-pnictides is governed by the density wave formation at the zone-edge vector M. At high energies, various spin- (SDW), charge- (CDW), orbital/pocket- (PDW) density waves, and their linear combinations, all appear equally likely, unified within the unitary order parameter of U(4)XU(4) symmetry. Nesting imperfections and low-energy interactions reduce this symmetry to that of real materials. Nevertheless, the generic ground state preserves a distinct signature of its highly symmetric origins: a SDW along one axis of the iron lattice is predicte…
We investigate the interplay between the magnetic and the superconducting degrees of freedom in unconventional multi-band superconductors such as iron pnictides. For this purpose a dynamical mode-mode coupling theory is developed based on the coupled Bethe-Salpeter equations. In order to investigate the region of the phase diagram not too far from the tetracritical point where the magnetic spin density wave, (SDW) and superconducting (SC) transition temperatures coincide, we also construct a Ginzburg - Landau functional including both SC and SDW fluctuations in a critical region above the tran…
The relationship between magnetism and superconductivity has been one of the most discussed topics in iron-based superconductors. Using the first-principles calculations, we have studied the electronic structure of 1144-type iron-based superconductor EuRbFe$_4$As$_4$. We find the crystal field splitting of EuRbFe$_4$As$_4$ is unique, such that the $d_{z^2}$ orbitals are closer to the Fermi level $ε_F$ than the $d_{xy}$ orbitals. The RKKY interaction strength is estimated to be approximately 0.12 meV in prestine EuRbFe$_4$As$_4$. Upon Ni-doping on the Fe site, the RKKY interaction strength is b…
57Fe Moessbauer spectroscopy was applied to investigate the superconductor parent compound Fe(1+x)Te for x=0.06, 0.10, 0.14, 0.18 within the temperature range 4.2 K - 300 K. A spin density wave (SDW) within the iron atoms occupying regular tetrahedral sites was observed with the square root of the mean square amplitude at 4.2 K varying between 9.7 T and 15.7 T with increasing x. Three additional magnetic spectral components appeared due to the interstitial iron distributed over available sites between the Fe-Te layers. The excess iron showed hyperfine fields at approximately 16 T, 21 T and 49 …
Like high Tc cuprates, the newly discovered iron based superconductors lie in close proximity to a magnetically ordered parent phase. However, while the magnetic order in parent cuprates is known to derive from a spin-spin local superexchange interaction, a plethora of experiments including neutron scattering have so far been unable to conclusively resolve whether a local moment Heisenberg description applies in parent iron based compounds, or whether magnetism arises from a collective SDW order instability. These two alternatives can in principle be distinguished by measuring the low energy m…
We investigate the nature of the SDW (Spin Density Wave) transition in the underdoped regime of an iron-based high Tc superconductor Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 by 75As NMR, with primary focus on a composition with x = 0.02 (T_SDW = 99 K).We demonstrate that critical slowing down toward the three dimensional SDW transition sets in at the tetragonal to orthorhombic structural phase transition, Ts = 105 K, suggesting strong interplay between structural distortion and spin correlations. In the critical regime between Ts and T_SDW, the dynamical structure factor of electron spins S(q,Wn) measured with the lo…
Using cluster-perturbation theory, we calculate the spectral density A(k,w) for a nematic phase of models describing pnictide superconductors, where very short-range magnetic correlations choose the ordering vector (pi,0) over the equivalent (0,pi) and thus break the fourfold rotation symmetry of the underlying lattice without inducing long-range magnetic order. In excellent agreement with angle resolved photo-emission spectroscopy (ARPES), we find that the yz bands at X move to higher energies. When onsite Coulomb repulsion brings the system close to a spin--density-wave (SDW) and renormalize…
We report temperature evolution of coherently excited acoustic and optical phonon dynamics in superconducting iron pnictide single crystal Ca(Fe_0.944Co_0.056)_2As_2 across the spin density wave transition at T_SDW ~ 85 K and superconducting transition at T_SC ~20 K. Strain pulse propagation model applied to the generation of the acoustic phonons yields the temperature dependence of the optical constants, and longitudinal and transverse sound velocities in the temperature range of 3.1 K to 300 K. The frequency and dephasing times of the phonons show anomalous temperature dependence below T_SC …
In view of the recent experimental facts in the iron-pnictides, we make a proposal that the itinerant electrons and local moments are simultaneously present in such multiband materials. We study a minimal model composed of coupled itinerant electrons and local moments to illustrate how a consistent explanation of the experimental measurements can be obtained in the leading order approximation. In this mean-field approach, the spin-density-wave (SDW) order and superconducting pairing of the itinerant electrons are not directly driven by the Fermi surface nesting, but are mainly induced by their…
Moessbauer spectroscopy measurements were performed for the temperature range between 4.2 K and 300 K in a transmission geometry applying 14.41-keV resonant line in 57Fe for PrFeAsO the latter being a parent compound of the iron-based superconductors belonging to the '1111' family. It was found that an itinerant 3d magnetic order develops at about 165 K and it is accompanied by an orthorhombic distortion of the chemical unit cell. A complete longitudinal 3d incommensurate spin density wave (SDW) order develops at about 140 K. Transferred hyperfine magnetic field generated by the praseodymium m…
A magneto-orbital coupling mechanism is proposed to account for the weak energy gap at the Fermi energy in the $(π,0)$ ordered SDW state of a realistic three band model for iron pnictides involving $d_{xz}$, $d_{yz}$, and $d_{xy}$ Fe orbitals. The orbital mixing terms between the $d_{xy}$ and $d_{xz}/d_{yz}$ orbitals, which are important in reproducing the orbital composition of the elliptical electron pockets at $(\pm π,0)$ and $(0,\pm π)$, are shown to play a key role in the energy gap formation in the SDW state.
In Ba(Fe0.95Co0.05)2As2 all of the 75As NMR intensity at the paramagnetic resonance position vanishes abruptly below Tonset(SDW)=56 K, indicating that magnetic (spin density wave) order is present in all of the sample volume, despite bulk superconductivity below Tc=15 K. The two phases thus coexist homogeneously at the microscopic scale. In Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2, on the other hand, the signal loss below Tonset(SDW)~75 K is not complete, revealing that magnetic order is bound to finite-size areas of the sample, while the remaining NMR signal shows a clear superconducting response below Tc=37 K. Thus,…
When passing through a phase transition, electronic system saves energy by opening energy gaps at the Fermi level. Delineating the energy gap anisotropy provides insights into the origin of the interactions that drive the phase transition. Here, we report the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study on the detailed gap anisotropies in both the tetragonal magnetic and superconducting phases in Sr$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$. First, we found that the spin-density-wave (SDW) gap is strongly anisotropic in the tetragonal magnetic phase. The gap magnitude correlates with the orbital ch…
We report the temperature-dependent optical conductivity and ARPES studies of the iron-based superconductor (SC) Sr$_{0.67}$Na$_{0.33}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ in the high-temperature tetragonal paramagnetic phase; below the structural and magnetic transitions at $T_{\rm N}\simeq$125 K in the orthorhombic spin-density-wave (SDW)-like phase, and $T_r\simeq$42 K in the reentrant tetragonal double-Q magnetic phase where both charge and SDW order exist; and below the SC transition at $T_c\simeq$10 K. The free-carrier component in the optical conductivity is described by two Drude contributions; one strong and…
We report electronic Raman scattering measurements of Sr(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals in their magnetic - Spin Density Wave (SDW) phase. The spectra display multiple, polarization-resolved SDW gaps as expected in a band-folding itinerant picture for a multiband system. The temperature dependence of the SDW gaps reveals an unusual evolution of the reconstructed electronic structure with at least one gap being activated only well below the magnetic SDW transition $T_N$. A comparison with temperature dependent Hall measurements allows us to assign this activated behavior to a chang…
Besides the conventional spin-density-wave (SDW) state, a new kind of orbital-transverse density-wave (OTDW) state is shown to exist generally in multi-orbital systems. We demonstrate that the orbital character of Fermi surface nesting plays an important role in density responses. The relationship between antiferromagnetism and structural phase transition in LaFeAsO (1111) and BaFe$_2$As$_2$ (122) compounds of iron-based superconductors may be understood in terms of the interplay between the SDW and OTDW with a five-orbital Hamiltonian. We propose that the essential difference between 1111 and…
We measured the transport properties and susceptibility of single crystals Ca$_{1-x}$La$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$(x=0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.19 and 0.25). Large in-plane resistivity anisotropy similar to that in Co-doped 122 iron-pnictides is observed although no transition metals were introduced in the FeAs-plane. The in-plane resistivity anisotropy gradually increases with La doping below T$_{SDW}$, being different from the hole-doped 122 superconductors. The susceptibilities of the samples show that La doping leads to suppression of SDW and induces a Curie-Weiss-like behavior at low temperature, which i…
The optical conductivity of LaFeAsO, BaFe$_2$As$_2$, SrFe$_2$As$_2$, and EuFe$_2$As$_2$ in the spin-density wave (SDW) state is investigated within density functional theory (DFT) in the framework of spin-polarized generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and GGA+U. We find a strong dependence of the optical features on the Fe magnetic moments. In order to recover the small Fe magnetic moments observed experimentally, GGA+$U_{\rm eff}$ with a suitable choice of negative on-site interaction $U_{\rm eff}=U-J$ was considered. Such an approach may be justified in terms of an overscreening which in…
We report a doping dependent electronic Raman scattering measurements on iron-pnictide superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals. A strongly anisotropic gap is found at optimal doping for x=0.065 with $Δ_{max}\sim 5Δ_{min}$. Upon entering the coexistence region between superconducting (SC) and spin-density-wave (SDW) orders, the effective pairing energy scale is strongly reduced. Our results are interpreted in terms of a competition between SC and SDW orders for electronic state at the Fermi level. Our findings advocate for a strong connection between the SC and SDW gaps an…
We report Raman scattering measurements on iron-pnictide superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals with varying cobalt $x$ content. The electronic Raman continuum shows a strong spectral weight redistribution upon entering the magnetic phase induced by the opening of the Spin Density Wave (SDW) gap. It displays two spectral features that weaken with doping, which are assigned to two SDW induced electronic transitions. Raman symmetry arguments are discussed to identify the origin of these electronic transitions in terms of orbital ordering in the magnetic phase. Our data do …
We study collective spin excitations of a magnetically ordered state in a multi-component system composed of both itinerant electrons and local moments. Here the induced spin-density-wave (SDW) ordering of itinerant electrons and the collinear antiferromangetic (AF) ordering of local moments are locked together via a Hund's rule coupling. We show that the Goldstone theorem still holds at the RPA level with the gapless spin wave protected inside the small SDW gap of itinerant electrons, which, however, is fragile in the presence of ion-anisotropy. A gapped out-of-phase spin mode extending over …
Spin wave dispersion and damping are investigated in the metallic SDW state of different itinerant electron models including a small interlayer hopping. Magnetic excitations in iron pnictides are shown to be well understood in terms of physical mechanisms characteristic of metallic magnets, such as carrier-induced ferromagnetic spin couplings, intra-band particle-hole excitations, and the spin-charge coupling mechanism, which is also important in ferromagnetic manganites.
The ternary iron arsenide BaFe2As2 with the tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure exhibits a spin density wave (SDW) anomaly at 140 K, very similar to LaFeAsO, the parent compound of the iron arsenide superconductors. BaFe2As2 is a poor Pauli-paramagnetic metal and undergoes a structural and magnetic phase transition at 140 K, accompanied by strong anomalies in the specific heat, electrical resistance and magnetic susceptibility. In the course of this transition, the space group symmetry changes from tetragonal (I4/mmm) to orthorhombic (Fmmm). 57Fe Moessbauer spectroscopy experiments show a singl…
In the iron-pnictide material CeFeAsO not only the Fe moments, but also the local 4f moments of the Ce order antiferromagnetically at low temperatures. We elucidate on the peculiar role of the Ce on the emergence of superconductivity. While application of pressure suppresses the iron SDW ordering temperature monotonously up to 4 GPa, the Ce-4f magnetism is stabilized, until both types of magnetic orders disappear abruptly and a narrow SC dome develops. With further increasing pressure characteristics of a Kondo-lattice system become more and more apparent in the electrical resistivity. This su…
We analyze spin density wave (SDW) order in iron-based superconductors and electronic structure in the SDW phase. We consider an itinerant model for Fe-pnictides with two hole bands centered at $(0,0)$ and two electron bands centered at $(0,π)$ and $(π,0)$ in the unfolded BZ. A SDW order in such a model is generally a combination of two components with momenta $(0,π)$ and $(π,0)$, both yield $(π,π)$ order in the folded zone. Neutron experiments, however, indicate that only one component is present. We show that $(0,π)$ or $(π,0)$ order is selected if we assume that only one hole band is involv…
Parent compounds AFe2As2 (A=Ca, Ba, Eu) of the 122 family of the iron-based superconductors have been studied by 57Fe Moessbauer spectroscopy in the temperature range 4.2 K - ~300 K. Spin density waves (SDW) have been found with some confidence. They are either incommensurate with the lattice period or the ratio of the respective periods is far away from ratio of small integers. SDW shape is very unconventional i.e. differs from the sinusoidal shape. Magnetic order starts with lowered temperature as narrow sheets of the significant electron spin density separated by areas with very small spin …
A central question in a large class of strongly correlated electron systems, including heavy fermion compounds and iron pnictides, is the identification of different phases and their origins. It has been shown that the antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase in some heavy fermion compounds is induced by Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between localized moments, and that the competition between this interaction and Kondo effect is responsible for quantum criticality. However, conclusive experimental evidence of the RKKY interaction in pnictides is lacking. Here, using high resolution $^{…
We report the first Nernst effect measurement on the new iron-based superconductor LaO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$FeAs $(x=0.1)$. In the normal state, the Nernst signal is negative and very small. Below $T_{c}$ a large positive peak caused by vortex motion is observed. The flux flowing regime is quite large compared to conventional type-II superconductors. However, a clear deviation of the Nernst signal from normal state background and an anomalous depression of off-diagonal thermoelectric current in the normal state between $T_{c}$ and 50 K are observed. We propose that this anomaly in the normal state Ne…
In the stoichiometric Fe-pnictides the same d-electrons form the local moments and participate in the metallic conductivity. In the manuscript the emergence of the magnetic moments on the Fe-sites, their interaction with the itinerant electrons are studied in the paramagnetic phase at the different relations between the onsite Coulomb repulsion and the intraatomic Hund's exchange. The energy of the local center that is due to its interaction with the conduction electrons is calculated exactly. It is found that the spin density wave transition is controlled by the RKKY interactions between the …
An SDW antiferromagnetic (SDW-AF) low temperature phase transition is generally observe and the AF spin fluctuations are considered to play an important role for the superconductivity paring mechanism in FeAs superconductors. However, a similar magnetic phase transition is not observed in FeSe superconductors, which has caused considerable discussion. We report on the intrinsic electronic states of FeSe as elucidated by transport measurements under magnetic fields using a high quality single crystal. A mobility spectrum analysis, an ab initio method that does not make assumptions on the transp…
Iron-based superconductors Ba0.7Rb0.3Fe2As2 and CaFe1.92Co0.08As2 of the '122' family have been investigated by means of the 14.41-keV Moessbauer transition in 57Fe versus temperature ranging from the room temperature till 4.2 K. A comparison is made with the previously investigated parent compounds BaFe2As2 and CaFe2As2. It has been found that Moessbauer spectra of these superconductors are composed of the magnetically split component due to development of spin density wave (SDW) and non-magnetic component surviving even at lowest temperatures. The latter component is responsible for supercon…

The new quaternary iron arsenide-fluoride SrFeAsF with the tetragonal ZrCuSiAs-type structure was synthesized and the crystal structure was determined by X-ray powder diffraction (P4/nmm, a = 399.30(1), c = 895.46(1) pm). SrFeAsF undergoes a structural and magnetic phase transition at 175 K, accompanied by strong anomalies in the specific heat, electrical resistance and magnetic susceptibility. In the course of this transition, the space group symmetry changes from tetragonal (P4/nmm) to orthorhombic (Cmme). 57Fe Moessbauer spectroscopy experiments show a single signal at room temperature at a…
A new layered Ti-based pnictide oxide superconductor, Ba1-xNaxTi2Sb2O (0.0 <= x <= 0.33), is reported. X-ray studies reveal it crystallizes in the tetragonal CeCr2Si2C structure. The undoped parent compound, BaTi2Sb2O (P4/mmm; a=4.1196(1)Å; c=8.0951(2)Å), exhibits a CDW/SDW transition at 54K. Upon chemical doping with Na, the CDW/SDW transition is systematically suppressed and super-conductivity arises with the critical temperatures, Tc, increasing to 5.5 K. Bulk superconductivity is confirmed by resistivity, magnetic and heat capacity measurements. Like the high-Tc cuprates and the iron pnict…
Using ab-initio band structure calculation based on the local density approximation, Cr K-edge resonant X-ray magnetic scattering spectra are analyzed in the spin density wave (SDW) state of chromium. We perform band structure calculation, assuming an ideal bcc lattice structure with the lattice constant observed at the spin-flip temperature T_{SF} and a commensurate SDW state with the propagation vector close to the observed value at T_{SF}. Taking account of the spin-orbit interaction, we obtain the orbital moment on each Cr site induced in proportion to the local spin moment, which is quite…
The nature of spin-density wave and its relation with superconductivity are crucial issues in the newly discovered Fe-based high temperature superconductors. Particularly it is unclear whether the superconducting phase and spin density wave (SDW) are truly exclusive from each other as suggested by certain experiments. With angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we here report exchange splittings of the band structures in Sr1-xKxFe2As2 (x=0,0.1,0.2), and the non-rigid-band behaviors of the splitting. Our data on single crystalline superconducting samples unambiguously prove that SDW and sup…
Electronic and magnetic properties of the heavily H-doped LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$H$_x$ $(x\sim0.5 )$ were studied in the framework of the density functional theory combined with the dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT). We found a stripe-like-ordered structure of hydrogen and oxygen atoms, as a ground state, with the same configuration as the antiferromagnetic (AF) order. The new configuration could explain the existing experimental results related to the heavily H-doped LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$H$_x$, such as an in-plane electronic anisotropy and a non-uniform magnetic behavior. A significant anisotropy was …
We present the first comprehensive derivation of the intrinsic electronic phase diagram of the iron-oxypnictide superconductors in the normal state based on the analysis of the electrical resistivity $ρ$ of both LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ and SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ for a wide range of doping. Our data give clear-cut evidence for unusual normal state properties in these new materials. In particular, the emergence of superconductivity at low doping levels is accompanied by distinct anomalous transport behavior in $ρ$ of the normal state which is reminiscent of the spin density wave (SDW) signature in th…
