Unstable operations in a generalized cohomology theory E give rise to a functor from the category of algebras over E to itself which is a colimit of representable functors and a comonoid with respect to composition of such functors. In this paper I set up a framework to study the algebra of such functors, which I call formal plethories, in the case where $E_*$ is a Prüfer ring. I show that the "logarithmic" functors of primitives and indecomposables give linear approximations of formal plethories by bimonoids in the 2-monoidal category of bimodules over a ring.
We introduce the compactness locus of a geometric functor between rigidly-compactly generated tensor-triangulated categories, and describe it for several examples arising in equivariant homotopy theory and algebraic geometry. It is a subset of the tensor-triangular spectrum of the target category which, crudely speaking, measures the failure of the functor to satisfy Grothendieck-Neeman duality (or equivalently, to admit a left adjoint). We prove that any geometric functor --- even one which does not admit a left adjoint --- gives rise to a Wirthmüller isomorphism once one passes to a colocali…
Recent work of Biedermann and Röndigs has translated Goodwillie's calculus of functors into the language of model categories. Their work focuses on symmetric multilinear functors and the derivative appears only briefly. In this paper we focus on understanding the derivative as a right Quillen functor to a new model category. This is directly analogous to the behaviour of Weiss's derivative in orthogonal calculus. The immediate advantage of this new category is that we obtain a streamlined and more informative proof that the n-homogeneous functors are classified by spectra with an action of the…
The description of algebraic structure of n-fold loop spaces can be done either using the formalism of topological operads, or using variations of Segal's $Γ$-spaces. The formalism of topological operads generalises well to different categories yielding such notions as $\mathbb E_n$-algebras in chain complexes, while the $Γ$-space approach faces difficulties. In this paper we discuss how, by attempting to extend the Segal approach to arbitrary categoires, one arrives to the problem of understanding "weak" sections of a homotopical Grothendieck fibration. We propose a model for such sections, c…
Functorial properties of the correspondence between commutative BV$_\infty$-algebras and L$_\infty$-algebras are investigated. The category of L$_\infty$-algebras with L$_\infty$-morphisms is characterized as a certain category of pure BV$_\infty$-algebras with pure BV$_\infty$-morphisms. The functor assigning to a commutative BV$_\infty$-algebra the L$_\infty$-algebra given by higher derived brackets is also shown to have a left adjoint. Cieliebak-Fukaya-Latschev's machinery of IBL$_\infty$- and BV$_\infty$-morphisms is further developed with introducing the logarithm of a map.
We study linear Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) quantization, which is a derived and shifted version of the Weyl quantization of symplectic vector spaces. Using a variety of homotopical machinery, we implement this construction as a symmetric monoidal functor of $\infty$-categories. We also show that this construction has a number of pleasant properties: It has a natural extension to derived algebraic geometry, it can be fed into the higher Morita category of $E_n$-algebras to produce a "higher BV quantization" functor, and when restricted to formal moduli problems, it behaves like a determinant. Alon…
We show that the functor of $p$-typical co-Witt vectors on commutative algebras over a perfect field $k$ of characteristic $p$ is defined on, and in fact only depends on, a weaker structure than that of a $k$-algebra. We call this structure a $p$-polar $k$-algebra. By extension, the functors of points for any $p$-adic affine commutative group scheme and for any formal group are defined on, and only depend on, $p$-polar structures. In terms of abelian Hopf algebras, we show that a cofree cocommutative Hopf algebra can be defined on any $p$-polar $k$-algebra $P$, and it agrees with the cofree co…
