Losses in superconducting planar resonators are presently assumed to predominantly arise from surface-oxide dissipation, due to experimental losses varying with choice of materials. We model and simulate the magnitude of the loss from interface surfaces in the resonator, and investigate the dependence on power, resonator geometry, and dimensions. Surprisingly, the dominant surface loss is found to arise from the metal-substrate and substrate-air interfaces. This result will be useful in guiding device optimization, even with conventional materials.
Metallic coplanar microwave resonators are widely employed at room temperature, but their low-temperature performance has received little attention so far. We characterize compact copper coplanar resonators with multiple modes from 2.5 to 20 GHz at temperatures as low as 5 K. We investigate the influence of center conductor width (20 to 100 μm) and coupling gap size (10 to 50 μm), and we observe a strong increase of quality factor (Q) for wider center conductors, reaching values up to 470. The magnetic-field dependence of the resonators is weak, with a maximum change in Q of 3.5% for an applie…
We characterize niobium nitride (NbN) $λ/2$ coplanar waveguide resonators, which were fabricated from a 10nm thick film on silicon dioxide grown by sputter deposition. For films grown at 120°C we report a superconducting critical temperature of 7.4K associated with a normal square resistance of 1k$Ω$ leading to a kinetic inductance of 192pH/$\Box$. We fabricated resonators with a characteristic impedance up to 4.1k$Ω$ and internal quality factors $Q_\mathrm{i} > 10^4$ in the single photon regime at zero magnetic field. Moreover, in the many photons regime, the resonators present high magnetic …
Superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators that can operate in strong magnetic fields are important tools for a variety of high frequency superconducting devices. Magnetic fields degrade resonator performance by creating Abrikosov vortices that cause resistive losses and frequency fluctuations, or suppressing superconductivity entirely. To mitigate these effects we investigate lithographically defined artificial defects in resonators fabricated from NbTiN superconducting films. We show that by controlling the vortex dynamics the quality factor of resonators in perpendicular magnetic fields …
Commensurability oscillations in the rf conductivity of unidirectional lateral superlattices: measurement of anisotropic conductivity by coplanar waveguide
We characterize a novel Josephson parametric amplifier based on a flux-tunable quarter-wavelength resonator. The fundamental resonance frequency is ~1GHz, but we use higher modes of the resonator for our measurements. An on-chip tuning line allows for magnetic flux pumping of the amplifier. We investigate and compare degenerate parametric amplification, involving a single mode, and nondegenerate parametric amplification, using a pair of modes. We show that we reach quantum-limited noise performance in both cases, and we show that the added noise can be less than 0.5 added photons in the case o…
We describe a fully broadband approach for electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments where it is possible to not only tune the magnetic field but also the frequency continuously over wide ranges. Here a metallic coplanar transmission line acts as compact and versatile microwave probe that can easily be implemented in different cryogenic setups. We perform ESR measurements at frequencies between 0.1 and 67 GHz and at temperatures between 50 mK and room temperature. Three different types of samples (Cr3+ ions in ruby, organic radicals of the nitronyl-nitroxide family, and the doped semiconductor…
Recent experiments on the coupling of the in-plane motional state of electrons floating on the surface of liquid helium to a microwave resonator have revealed the importance of helium surface fluctuations to the coherence of this motion. Here we investigate these surface fluctuations by studying the resonance properties of a superconducting coplanar waveguide (CPW) resonator filled with superfluid helium, where a significant fraction of the resonator's electromagnetic mode volume is coupled to the surface dynamics of the liquid. We present preliminary results on real-time CPW resonator frequen…
We present simulations and analytic calculations of the electromagnetic microwave fields of coplanar waveguide (CPW) resonators in the vicinity of highly conducting metallic samples. The CPW structures are designed with the aim of investigating electron spin resonance (ESR) in metallic heavy-fermion systems, in particular YbRh$_2$Si$_2$, close to the quantum critical point. Utilizing CPW resonators for ESR experiments allows for studies at mK temperatures and a wide range of freely selectable frequencies. It is therefore of great interest to evaluate the performance of resonant CPW structures …
Magnetic-field-resilient superconducting coplanar waveguide (SCPW) resonators are essential for developing integrated quantum circuits of various qubits and quantum memory devices. Molybdenum-Rhenium (MoRe), which is a disordered superconducting alloy forming a highly transparent contact to the graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), would be a promising platform for realizing the field-resilient SCPW resonators combined with graphene- and CNT-based nano-hybrid qubits. We fabricated MoRe SCPW resonators and investigated their microwave transmission characteristics with varying temperature and ex…
Molybdenum rhenium alloy thin films can exhibit superconductivity up to critical temperatures of $T_c=15\mathrm{K}$. At the same time, the films are highly stable in the high-temperature methane / hydrogen atmosphere typically required to grow single wall carbon nanotubes. We characterize molybdenum rhenium alloy films deposited via simultaneous sputtering from two sources, with respect to their composition as function of sputter parameters and their electronic dc as well as GHz properties at low temperature. Specific emphasis is placed on the effect of the carbon nanotube growth conditions on…
Separating the influence of hyperfine from spin-orbit interactions in spin-dependent carrier recombination and dissociation processes necessitates magnetic resonance spectroscopy over a wide range of frequencies. We have designed compact and versatile coplanar waveguide resonators for continuous-wave electrically detected magnetic resonance, and tested these on organic light-emitting diodes. By exploiting both the fundamental and higher-harmonic modes of the resonators we cover almost five octaves in resonance frequency within a single setup. The measurements with a common pi-conjugated polyme…
Dielectric measurements on insulating materials at cryogenic temperatures can be challenging, depending on the frequency and temperature ranges of interest. We present a technique to study the dielectric properties of bulk dielectrics at GHz frequencies. A superconducting coplanar Nb resonator is deposited directly on the material of interest, and this resonator is then probed in distant-flip-chip geometry with a microwave feedline on a separate chip. Evaluating several harmonics of the resonator gives access to various probing frequencies, in the present studies up to 20 GHz. We demonstrate t…
We characterize low-loss electron-beam evaporated niobium thin films deposited under ultra-high vacuum conditions. Slow deposition yields films with a high superconducting transition temperature ($9.20 \pm 0.06 \rm ~K$) as well as a residual resistivity ratio of $4.8$. We fabricate the films into coplanar waveguide resonators to extract the intrinsic loss due to the presence of two-level-system fluctuators using microwave measurements. For a coplanar waveguide resonator gap of $2~μ\rm m$, the films exhibit filling-factor-adjusted two-level-system loss tangents as low as $1.5 \times 10^{-7}$ wi…
We report on the design, fabrication and characterization of superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators with nanoscopic constrictions. By reducing the size of the center line down to 50 nm, the radio frequency currents are concentrated and the magnetic field in its vicinity is increased. The device characteristics are only slightly modified by the constrictions, with changes in resonance frequency lower than 1% and internal quality factors of the same order of magnitude as the original ones. These devices could enable the achievement of higher couplings to small magnetic samples or even to …
Precise detection of spin resonance is of paramount importance to achieve coherent spin control in quantum computing. We present a novel setup for spin resonance measurements, which uses a dc-SQUID flux detector coupled to an antenna from a coplanar waveguide. The SQUID and the waveguide are fabricated from 20~nm Nb thin film, allowing high magnetic field operation with the field applied parallel to the chip. We observe a resonance signal between the first and third excited states of Gd spins $S=7/2$ in a CaWO$_4$ crystal, relevant for state control in multi-level systems.
Ultimate sensitivity for quantum magnetometry using nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond is limited by number of NV centers and coherence time. Microwave irradiation with a high and homogeneous power density for a large detection volume is necessary to achieve highly sensitive magnetometer. Here, we demonstrate a microwave resonator to enhance the power density of the microwave field and an optical system with a detection volume of 1.4e-3 mm$^3$. The strong microwave field enables us to achieve 48 ns Rabi oscillation which is sufficiently faster than the phase relaxation time of NV centers…
A strategy aimed at decreasing dielectric loss in coplanar waveguides (CPW) and qubits involves the creation of trenches in the underlying substrate within the gaps of the overlying metallization. Participation of contamination layers residing on surfaces and interfaces in these designs can be reduced due to the change in the effective dielectric properties between the groundplane and conductor metallization. Although finite element method approaches have been previously applied to quantify this decrease, an analytical method is presented that can uniquely address geometries possessing small t…
We develop the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian approach for open systems with Neumann boundary conditions. The approach can be used for calculating the scattering matrix and the scattering function in open resonator-waveguide systems. In higher than one dimensions the method represents acoustic coupled mode theory in which the scattering solution within an open resonator is found in the form of expansion over the eigenmodes of the closed resonator decoupled from the waveguides. The problem of finding the transmission spectra is reduced to solving a set of linear equations with a non-Hermit…
We investigate the performance of niobium nitride superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators towards hybrid quantum devices with magnon-photon coupling. We find internal quality factors ~ 20000 at 20 mK base temperature, in zero magnetic field. We find that by reducing film thickness below 100 nm internal quality factor greater than 1000 can be maintained up to parallel magnetic field of ~ 1 T and perpendicular magnetic field of ~ 100 mT. We further demonstrate strong coupling of microwave photons in these resonators, with magnons in chromium trichloride, a van der Waals antiferromagnet, wh…
Coupled-resonator optical waveguides (CROWs) are known to have interesting and useful dispersion properties. Here, we study the transport in these waveguides in the general case where each resonator is open and asymmetric, i.e., is leaky and possesses no mirror-reflection symmetry. Each individual resonator then exhibits asymmetric backscattering between clockwise and counterclockwise propagating waves, which in combination with the losses induces non-orthogonal eigenmodes. In a chain of such resonators, the coupling between the resonators induces an additional source of non-hermiticity, and a…
Superconducting quantum circuits are one of the leading quantum computing platforms. To advance superconducting quantum computing to a point of practical importance, it is critical to identify and address material imperfections that lead to decoherence. Here, we use terahertz Scanning Near-field Optical Microscopy (SNOM) to probe the local dielectric properties and carrier concentrations of wet-etched aluminum resonators on silicon, one of the most characteristic components of the superconducting quantum processors. Using a recently developed vector calibration technique, we extract the THz pe…
We demonstrate an ultralow loss monolithic integrated lithium niobate photonic platform consisting of dry-etched subwavelength waveguides. We show microring resonators with a quality factor of 10$^7$ and waveguides with propagation loss as low as 2.7 dB/m.
We study the transport of a single photon in two coupled one-dimensional semi-infinite coupled-resonator waveguides (CRWs), in which both end sides are coupled to a dissipative cavity. We demonstrate that a single photon can transfer from one semi-infinite CRW to the other nonreciprocally. Based on such nonreciprocity, we further construct a three-port single-photon circulator by a T-shaped waveguide, in which three semi-infinite CRWs are pairwise mutually coupled to each other. The single-photon nonreciprocal transport is induced by the breaking of the time-reversal symmetry and the optimal c…
