The influence of the surface structure and vibration mode on the resistivity of Cu films and the corresponding size effect are investigated. The temperature dependent conductivities of the films with different surface morphologies are calculated by the algorithm based upon the tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital method and the Green's function technique. The thermal effect is introduced by setting the atomic displacements according to the Gaussian distribution with the mean-square amplitude estimated by the Debye model. The result shows that the surface atomic vibration contributes significantly to the resistivity of the systems. Comparing the conductivities for three different vibration modes, it is suggested that freezing the surface vibration is necessary for practical applications to reduce the resistivity induced by the surface electron-phonon scattering.
A wide variation in the disorder strength, as inferred from an order of magnitude variation in the longitudinal resistivity of Co2FeSi (CFS) Huesler alloy thin films of fixed (50 nm) thickness, has been achieved by growing these films on Si(111) substrates at substrate temperatures ranging from room temperature (RT) to 600 C. An in-depth study of the influence of disorder on anomalous Hall resistivity, longitudinal resistivity(LR) and magnetoresistance, enabled by this approach, reveals the following. The side-jump mechanism gives a dominant contribution to anomalous Hall resistivity (AHR) in t…
It is generally understood that the resistivity of metal thin films scales with film thickness mainly due to grain boundary and boundary surface scattering. Recently, several experiments and ab initio simulations have demonstrated the impact of crystal orientation on resistivity scaling. The crystal orientation cannot be captured by the commonly used resistivity scaling models and a qualitative understanding of its impact is currently lacking. In this work, we derive a resistivity scaling model that captures grain boundary and boundary surface scattering as well as the anisotropy of the band s…
The anomaly in the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) was observed for a C1b-type NiMnSb half-Heusler alloy thin film deposited on a MgO (001) substrate. The Nernst angle (θANE) showed maximum peak with decreasing temperature and reached 0.15 at 80 K, which is considered to be brought by the cross-over from half-metal to normal ferromagnet in NiMnSb at low temperature. This anomaly was also observed for the transport properties, that is, both the resistivity and the anomalous Hall resistivity in the same temperature range.
We study the topological Hall effect in a diffusive ferromagnetic metal thin film by solving a Boltzmann transport equation in the presence of spin-flip scattering. A generalized spin diffusion equation is derived, which contains an additional source term associated with the gradient of the emergent magnetic field that arises, and its solution shows that spin accumulation may build up in the vicinity of the magnetic skyrmions. We show that the spin accumulation gives rise to a spin polarized diffusion current that in general suppresses that bulk topological Hall current. Only when the spin dif…
A realistic tight-binding model is developed and employed to elucidate the resistivity size effect due to steps on Ru thin films. The resistivity of two different film orientations, $(0001)$ and $(1 \bar{1}00)$, is computed for transport along a $[1 1 \bar{2} 0]$ direction both for smooth surfaces and for surfaces with monolayer-high steps. In the case of smooth films, the systems are also studied using solutions to the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE). Interestingly, the resistivity of $(1 \bar{1}00)$ surfaces exhibits a significant size effect even in the absence of surface steps. When mon…
The collective oscillations of surface charges (surface plasmons) induced by light-matter interactions were predicted in the 1950s to influence electrical conduction in 2D noble metals. Primarily two mechanisms were predicted and later by Frohlich which could affect the electron transport in metals; (1) Umklapp electron-electron scattering and (2) attractive interaction between free electrons in transition metals because of screening of the d-band electrons by the s-band electrons. [1] However, there is no experimental evidence to date on how such oscillations might influence the electrical co…
We present a broadband ferromagnetic resonance study of the Gilbert damping enhancement ($Δα$) due to spin pumping in NiFe/Pt bilayers. The bilayers, which have negligible interfacial spin memory loss, are studied as a function of the Pt layer thickness ($t_{\text{Pt}}$) and temperature (100-293 K). Within the framework of diffusive spin pumping theory, we demonstrate that Dyakonov-Perel (DP) or Elliot-Yaffet (EY) spin relaxation mechanisms acting alone are incompatible with our observations. In contrast, if we consider that the relation between spin relaxation characteristic time ($τ_{\text{s…
The recent realization of epitaxial SrCoO$_3$ thin films has triggered a renewed interest in their electronic, magnetic, and ionic properties. Here we uncover several unusual magneto-transport properties of this compound, suggesting that it hosts persistent spin fluctuation down to low temperatures. We achieve the metallic SrCoO$_3$ with record-low resistivity from insulating SrCoO$_{2.5}$ by the ionic liquid gating. We find a linear relationship between the anomalous Hall resistivity and the longitudinal resistivity, which cannot be accounted for by the conventional mechanisms. We theoretical…
The growth of SrRuO$_3$ (SRO) thin film with high-crystallinity and low residual resistivity (RR) is essential to explore its intrinsic properties. Here, utilizing the adsorption-controlled growth technique, the growth condition of initial SrO layer on TiO$_2$-terminated SrTiO$_3$ (STO) (001) substrate was found to be crucial for achieving a low RR in the resulting SRO film grown afterward. The optimized initial SrO layer shows a $c$(2 x 2) superstructure that was characterized by electron diffraction, and a series of SRO films with different thicknesses ($t$s) were then grown. The resulting S…
We study the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) in SrRuO$_3$ thin films, uncovering wide regimes of wavelength, temperature, and magnetic field where the Kerr rotation is not simply proportional to the magnetization but instead displays two-component behavior. One component of the MOKE signal tracks the average magnetization, while the second "anomalous" component bears a resemblance to anomalies in the Hall resistivity which have been previously reported in skyrmion materials. We present a theory showing that the MOKE anomalies arise from the non-monotonic relation between the Kerr angle and …
The resistivity of different films and structures containing fluorinated graphene (FG) flakes and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) grown graphene of various fluorination degrees under tensile and compressive strains due to bending deformations was studied. Graphene and multilayer graphene films grown by means of the CVD method were transferred onto the flexible substrate by laminating and were subjected to fluorination. They demonstrated a weak fluorination degree (F/C lower 20%). Compressive strains led to a strong (one-two orders of magnitude) decrease in the resistivity in both cases, which …
