Here we propose a possible way to produce superconductors with high critical temperature Tc by confinement of a Fermi liquid in a superlattice of quantum stripes (wells, wires or dots). The enhancement of Tc is obtained by tuning the size L of the stripes (wells, wires or dots), and the wavelength of electrons at the Fermi level λF at the resonance condition L λF. The 3D superconducting phase is stabilized by the condition that the separation W between the stripes (wells, wires or dots) should be of the order of the coherence length ξ0. This quantum state is realized in Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu2O8+y superconductor with Tc= 84K, where the resonance condition kFy~2π/L for the component of the Fermi wavevector normal to the stripe direction holds. This work gives the parameters for the design of new superconducting materials with higher Tc made of metal heterostructures approaching the atomic limit.
We discuss heat transport in hole-doped manganites, nickelates and cuprates for which real-space charge ordering has been observed. We survey the thermal transport response to charge order in the various materials and the associated structural modifications, particularly distortions of the metal-oxygen polyhedra associated with localized charge, that may be a principal source of phonon damping.
We perform infrared conductivity measurements on a series of CaCuO$_2$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures made by the insulating cuprate CaCuO$_2$ (CCO) and the insulating perovkite SrTiO$_3$ (STO). We estimate the carrier density of various heterostructures, with different level of hole doping from the integral of the optical conductivity and we measure the corresponding degree of correlation by estimating the ratio between the Drude weight and the integral of the infrared spectrum. The analysis demonstrates a large degree of correlation, which increases as the doping is reduced. The experimental res…
Normal-state magnetic properties of cuprate high-T_c superconductors are interpreted based on the self-consistent solution of the t-J model of Cu-O planes. The solution method retains the rotation symmetry of spin components in the paramagnetic state and has no preset magnetic ordering. The obtained solution is homogeneous. The calculated temperature and concentration dependencies of the magnetic susceptibility are close to those observed in experiment. These results offer explanations for the observed scaling of the static uniform susceptibility and for the changes in the spin correlation len…
Recent experiments on heterostructures composed of two or more films of cuprate superconductors of different oxygen doping levels\cite{Yuli,Gozar} have shown a remarkable T$_c$ enhancement (up to 50%) relative to single compound films. We provide here a simple explanation of the enhancement which arises naturally from a collection of experimental works. We show that the enhancement could be caused by a structural change in the lattice, namely an increase in the distance of the apical oxygen from the copper-oxygen plane. This increase modifies the effective off-site interaction in the plane whi…
We present a low-energy muon-spin-rotation study of the magnetic and superconducting properties of YBa2Cu3O7/PrBa2Cu3O7 trilayer and bilayer heterostructures. By determining the magnetic-field profiles throughout these structures we show that a finite superfluid density can be induced in otherwise semiconducting PrBa2Cu3O7 layers when juxtaposed to YBa2Cu3O7 "electrodes" while the intrinsic antiferromagnetic order is unaffected.
A simple empirical relation has been found to exist between optimum Tc and the formal mean cation charge <qc> of perovskite-related superconductors, covering both conventional superconductors and superconducting cuprates. Tc is shown to increase exponentially with decreasing <qc>. It is suggested that a Ba-based cuprate with <qc> about 2 reach a Tc around 200 K. The strong correlation may be thought of as an indication for a common mechanism of superconductivity of the whole family of compounds. In addition, the structural assignment for the 'cubic' high-Tc phase reported by Volkov (Tc = 117 K…
The magnetic susceptibility of underdoped yttrium and lanthanum cuprates is interpreted based on the self-consistent solution of the t-J model of a Cu-O plane. The calculations reproduce correctly the frequency dependencies of the susceptibility in YBa2Cu3O_{7-y} and La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO4 attributing their dissimilarity to the difference in the damping of spin excitations. In YBa2Cu3O_{7-y} these excitations are well defined at the antiferromagnetic wave vector Q=(π,π) even in the normal state which manifests itself in a pronounced maximum -- the resonance peak -- in the susceptibility. In La_{2-x}…
The incommensurate magnetic response observed in normal-state cuprate perovskites is interpreted based on the projection operator formalism and the t-J model of Cu-O planes. In agreement with experiment the calculated dispersion of maxima in the susceptibility has the shape of two parabolas with upward and downward branches which converge at the antiferromagnetic wave vector. The maxima are located at the momenta $({1/2},{1/2}\pmδ)$, $({1/2}\pmδ,{1/2})$ and at $({1/2}\pmδ,{1/2}\pmδ)$, $({1/2}\pmδ,{1/2}\mpδ)$ in the lower and upper parabolas, respectively. The upper parabola reflects the disper…

The superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ of multilayers of electron-doped cuprates, composed of underdoped (or undoped) and overdoped La% $_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (LCCO) and Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (PCCO) thin films, is found to increase significantly with respect to the $T_{c}$ of the corresponding single-phase films. By investigating the critical current density of superlattices with different doping levels and layer thicknesses, we find that the $T_{c}$ enhancement is caused by a redistribution of charge over an anomalously large distance.
We examine the effect of CuO intergrowths on the superconductivity in epitaxial La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_3/YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} (LCMO/YBCO) thin-film heterostructures. Scanning transmission electron microscopy on bilayer LCMO/YBCO thin films revealed double CuO-chain intergrowths which form regions with the 247 lattice structure in the YBCO layer. These nanoscale 247 regions do not appear in x-ray diffraction, but can physically account for the reduced critical temperature Tc of bilayer thin films relative to unilayer films with the same YBCO thickness, at least down to ~25 nm. We attribute the CuO int…
We have studied the superexchange interaction $J_{ij}$ in doped $2D$ cuprates. The AFM interaction strongly depends on the state of the lattice of a CuO$_2$ layer surrounded by two LaO rock salt layers. In a static $U$ and $D$ stripe nanostructure, the homogeneous AFM interaction is impossible due to the $U/D/U...$ periodic stripe sequence and $T_N=0$. In a dynamic stripe nanostructure, the ideal CuO$_2$ layer with nonlocal effects and the homogeneous AFM interaction are restored. However the interaction $J_{ij}$ decreases by the exponential factor due to partial dynamic quenching. The meaning…
Is it possible to increase Tc by constructing cuprate heterostructures, which combine the high pairing energy of underdoped layers with the large carrier density of proximate overdoped layers? We investigate this question within a model bilayer system using an effective theory of the doped Mott insulator. Interestingly, the question hinges on the fundamental nature of the superconducting state in the underdoped regime. Within a plain slave boson mean field theory, there is absolutely no enhancement of Tc. However, we do get a substantial enhancement for moderate inter-layer tunneling when we u…
This thesis presents a systematic study of magnetotransport and magnetic ordering in manganite-high T$_c$ cuprate spin valve structures. YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$ - La$_{2 / 3}$Sr$_{1 / 3}$MnO$_{3}$ heterostructures of (110) orientation are grown to allow direct injection of spin polarized holes from the La$_{2 / 3}$Sr$_{1 / 3}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) into the CuO$_2$ superconducting planes of the YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$ (YBCO). Galvanomagnetic studies on the LSMO-YBCO-LSMO trilayers reveal unusually high AMR ($\sim$72000%) on rotating the field in the plane of the heterostructure whose magnetic grou…
We report on the study of electron transport in the oxide heterostructures with superconductor/magnetic matter (S/M) interfaces where anomaly large penetration of superconducting correlations in magnetic matter (proximity effect) is realized. The developed theoretical model based on multilayer magnetic structure of M-interlayer and experiment show presence of the long-range proximity effect at S/M-interface with antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering of the interlayer magnetization. The investigated hybrid heterostructures include cuprate superconductor, the AF-cuprate interlayer and conventional sup…
A theoretical analysis is presented on possible effects of disorder by dopants in high-temperature superconducting cuprate perovskites, to define their basic spectra of spin and electronic excitations, and the subsequent observable properties, especially doping dependence of superconducting order parameter. The central point in the proposed physical picture is formation of specific impurity subband within the insulating bandgap of initial undoped material, serving as a source for the system metallization and further transition into superconducting state with anisotropic order parameter.
Beginning in 1973, several non-cuprate transition metal and non-transition metal oxides were discovered with superconducting transition temperatures between 10 and 30 K. Retrospectives about these discoveries in spinel structure LiTi2O4 and perovskite structure (Ba,K)(Bi,Pb)O3 are given.
Heterostructures consisting of a cuprate superconductor YBa2Cu3O7x and a ruthenate/manganite (SrRuO3/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3) spin valve have been studied by SQUID magnetometry, ferromagnetic resonances and neutron reflectometry. It was shown that due to the influence of magnetic proximity effect a magnetic moment is induced in the superconducting part of heterostructure and at the same time the magnetic moment is suppressed in the ferromagnetic spin valve. The experimental value of magnetization induced in the superconductor has the same order of magnitude with the calculations based on the induced ma…
We analyze the conditions for observation of zero sound in layered perovskites with transition metal ion on chalcogenide oxidizer. We conclude that propagation of zero sound is possible only for anti-ferromagnetic sign of the $s$-$d$ interaction. If the $s$-$d$ exchange integral $J_{sd}$ has antiferromagnetic sign, as it is perhaps in the case for layered cuprates, zero sound is a thermally activated dissipation mode, which generates only "hot spots" in the Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) data along the Fermi contour. We predict that zero sound will be observable for transitio…
The effects of spin-polarized quasiparticle transport in superconducting YBa2Cu3O_{7-δ} (YBCO) epitaxial films are investigated by means of current injection into perovskite ferromagnet-insulator-superconductor (F-I-S) heterostructures. These effects are compared with the injection of simple quasiparticles into control samples of perovskite non-magnetic metal-insulator-superconductor (N-I-S). Systematic studies of the critical current density as a function of the injection current density, temperature and the thickness of the superconductor reveal drastic differences between the F-I-S and N-I-…
In complex transition metal oxide heterostructures of physically dissimilar perovskite compounds, interface phenomena can lead to novel physical properties not observed in either of their constituents. This remarkable feature opens new prospects for technological applications in oxide electronic devices based on nm-thin oxide films. Here we report on a significant electronic charge and orbital reconstruction at interfaces between YBa2Cu3O6 and SrTiO3 studied using local spin density approximation (LSDA) with intra-atomic Coulomb repulsion (LSDA+U). We show that the interface polarity results i…
We report on structural, DC, X-ray and neutron studies of hybrid superconducting mesa-heterostructures with a cuprate antiferromagnetic interlayer Ca1-xSrxCuO2 (CSCO). The upper electrode was bilayer Nb/Au superconductor and copper oxide superconductor YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) was the bottom electrode. It was experimentally shown that during the epitaxial growth of the two films YBCO and CSCO a charge carrier doping takes place in the CSCO interlayer with a depth about 20 nm. The conductivity of the doped part of CSCO layer is close to the metal type, while the reference CSCO film, deposited directly …
We propose a novel heterostructure to achieve chiral topological superconductivity in 2D. A substrate with a large Rashba spin-orbit coupling energy is brought in proximity to a twisted bilayer of thin films exfoliated from a high-temperature cuprate superconductor. The combined system is then exposed to an out-of-plane magnetic field. The rare $d + id$ pairing symmetry expected to occur in such a system allows for nontrivial topology; specifically, in contrast to the case of the twisted bilayer in isolation, the substrate induces an odd Chern number. The resulting phase is characterized by th…
A pivotal challenge posed by unconventional superconductors is to unravel how superconductivity emerges upon cooling from the generally complex normal state. Some of the most prominent unconventional superconductors are oxides: strontium titanate, strontium ruthenate, and the cuprates exhibit greatly different superconducting transition temperatures $T_c$, and although their respective superconducting pairing mechanisms remain unknown, they are thought to differ as well. Here we use nonlinear magnetic response, a probe that is uniquely sensitive to the superconducting precursor, to uncover rem…
We propose an alternative platform to observe Majorana bound states in solid state systems. High critical temperature cuprate superconductors can induce superconductivity, by proximity effect, in quasi one dimensional nanowires with strong spin orbit coupling. They favor a wider and more robust range of conditions to stabilize Majorana fermions due to the large gap values, and offer novel functionalities in the design of the experiments determined by different dispersion for Andreev bound states as a function of the phase difference.
The evidence for proximity-induced superconductivity in heterostructures of topological insulators and high-Tc cuprates has been intensely debated. We use molecular beam epitaxy to grow thin films of topological insulator Bi2Te3 on a cuprate Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x, and study the surface of Bi2Te3 using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. In few unit-cell thick Bi2Te3 films, we find a V-shaped gap-like feature at the Fermi energy in dI/dV spectra. By reducing the coverage of Bi2Te3 films to create nanoscale islands, we discover that this spectral feature dramatically evolve…
Recent developments in high-temperature superconductivity highlight a generic tendency of the cuprates to develop competing electronic (charge) supermodulations. While coupled to the lattice and showing different characteristics in different materials, these supermodulations themselves are generally conceived to be quasi-two-dimensional, residing mainly in individual CuO2 planes, and poorly correlated along the c-axis. Here we observed with resonant elastic x-ray scattering a distinct type of electronic supermodulation in YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) thin films grown epitaxially on La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO)…
We report on mutual proximity effects in d-wave superconductor/half-metal heterostructures which correspond to systems composed of high-Tc cuprates and manganite materials. In our study, proximity effects are induced by the interplay of two separate interface effects: spin-mixing (or rotation) surface scattering and spin-flip scattering. The surface spin-mixing scattering introduces spin-triplet pairing correlations in superconducting side; as a result, Andreev bound states are formed at energies within the superconducting gap. The spin-flip scattering introduces not only long range equal-spin…
Despite the structural resemblance of certain cuprate and nickelate parent compounds there is a striking spread of $T_c$ among such transition metal oxide superconductors. We adopt a minimal two-orbital $e_g$ model which covers cuprates and nickelate heterostructures in different parametric limits, and analyse its superconducting instabilities. The joint consideration of interactions, doping, Fermiology, and in particular the $e_g$ orbital splitting allows us to explain the strongly differing pairing propensities in cuprate and nickelate superconductors.
A detailed tight-binding analysis of the electron band structure of the CuO_2 plane of layered cuprates is performed within a sigma-band Hamiltonian including four orbitals - Cu3d_x^2-y^2, Cu4s, O2p_x, and O2p_y. Both the experimental and theoretical hints in favor of Fermi level located in a Cu or O band, respectively, are considered. For these two alternatives analytical expressions are obtained for the LCAO electron wave functions suitable for the treatment of electron superexchange. Simple formulae for the Fermi surface and electron dispersions are derived by applying the Loewdin down-fold…
We introduce a generic Froehlich-Coulomb model of the oxides, which also includes infinite on-site (Hubbard) repulsion, and describe a simple analytical method of solving the multi-polaron problem in complex lattice structures. Two particular lattices, a zig-zag ladder and a perovskite layer, are studied. We find that depending on the relative strength of the Froehlich and Coulomb interactions these systems are either polaronic Fermi (or Luttinger)-liquids, bipolaronic superconductors, or charge segregated insulators. In the superconducting phase the carriers are superlight mobile bipolarons. …
Interfacial phonons between iron-based superconductors (FeSCs) and perovskite substrates have received considerable attention due to the possibility of enhancing preexisting superconductivity. Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we studied the correlation between superconductivity and e-ph interaction with interfacial-phonons in an iron-based superconductor Sr$_2$VO$_3$FeAs ($T_c \approx$ 33 K) made of alternating FeSC and oxide layers. The quasiparticle interference measurement over regions with systematically different average superconducting gaps due to the e-ph coupling locally modulate…
The superconductor-to-insulator transition (SIT) induced by means such as external magnetic fields, disorder or spatial confinement is a vivid illustration of a quantum phase transition dramatically affecting the superconducting order parameter. In pursuit of a new realization of the SIT by interfacial charge transfer, we developed extremely thin superlattices composed of high $T_c$ superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ (YBCO) and colossal magnetoresistance ferromagnet La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ (LCMO). By using linearly polarized resonant X-ray absorption spectroscopy and magnetic circular dic…
