The evidence for proximity-induced superconductivity in heterostructures of topological insulators and high-Tc cuprates has been intensely debated. We use molecular beam epitaxy to grow thin films of topological insulator Bi2Te3 on a cuprate Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x, and study the surface of Bi2Te3 using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. In few unit-cell thick Bi2Te3 films, we find a V-shaped gap-like feature at the Fermi energy in dI/dV spectra. By reducing the coverage of Bi2Te3 films to create nanoscale islands, we discover that this spectral feature dramatically evolves into a much larger hard gap, which can be understood as a Coulomb blockade gap. This conclusion is supported by the evolution of dI/dV spectra with the lateral size of Bi2Te3 islands, as well as by topographic measurements that show an additional barrier separating Bi2Te3 and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x. We conclude that the prominent gap-like feature in dI/dV spectra in Bi2Te3 films is not a proximity-induced superconducting gap. Instead, it can be explained by Coulomb blockade effects, which take into account additional resistive and capacitive coupling at the interface. Our experiments provide a fresh insight into the tunneling measurements of complex heterostructures with buried interfaces.
Single electron transistors (SETs) made from single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are promising for quantum electronic devices operating with ultra-low power consumption and allow fundamental studies of electron transport. We report on SETs made by registered in-plane growth utilizing tailored nanoscale catalyst patterns and chemical vapor deposition. Metallic SWCNTs have been removed by an electrical burn-in technique and the common gate hysteresis was removed using PMMA and baking, leading to field effect transistors with large on/off ratios up to 10^5. Further segmentation into 200 nm shor…
We introduce selective area grown hybrid InAs/Al nanowires based on molecular beam epitaxy, allowing arbitrary semiconductor-superconductor networks containing loops and branches. Transport reveals a hard induced gap and unpoisoned 2e-periodic Coulomb blockade, with temperature dependent 1e features in agreement with theory. Coulomb peak spacing in parallel magnetic field displays overshoot, indicating an oscillating discrete near-zero subgap state consistent with device length. Finally, we investigate a loop network, finding strong spin-orbit coupling and a coherence length of several microns…
The superconducting nominal "non-doped" $La_{1.85}Y_{0.15}CuO_4$ (LYCO) thin films are successfully prepared by dc magnetron-sputtering and in situ post-annealing in vacuum. The best $T_{C0}$ more than 13K is achieved in the optimal LYCO films with highly pure c-axis oriented T'-type structure. In the normal state, the quasi-quadratic temperature dependence of resistivity, the negative Hall coefficient and effect of oxygen content in the films are quite similar to the typical Ce-doped T'-214 cuprates, suggesting that T'-LYCO shows the electron-doping nature like known n-type cuprates, and is n…
We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to study the doping evolution of infinite-layer Sr$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$CuO$_{2}$ thin films grown by molecular-beam epitaxy. At low doping, the material exhibits a dispersive lower Hubbard band typical of the superconducting cuprate parent compounds. As carriers are added to the system, a continuous evolution from charge-transfer insulator to superconductor is observed, with the initial lower Hubbard band pinned well below the Fermi level and the development of a coherent low-energy band with electron doping. This two-component spectral function emph…
The superconductivity phase diagrams of electron doped cuprates of the form R(2-x)CexCuO4 (with R= La, Pr, Nd, Sm, and Eu) have been determined for cerium compositions 0 < x < 0.36 in a consistent series of epitaxial thin films grown by reactive molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The use of epitaxial thin films allows the growth of materials away from thermodynamical equilibrium expanding the accessible phase space beyond the availability of bulk material. The superconducting phase space systematically increases with the rare earth ionic size. The doping concentration where the maximal transition t…
We have grown untwinned YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) films on (110) MgO substrates that were pre-annealed at high temperature in oxygen atmosphere. The annealing results in surface reconstruction with shallow facets, which induce the suppression of the YBCO twinning domains, and the preferential alignment of the CuO chains along one of the in-plane directions of the substrate. Because of the large mismatch between the in-plane lattice parameters of film and substrate, the strain induced by the MgO into the YBCO layer is strong and very peculiar. The YBCO film is compressed, with respect to th…
Studies to date on ferromagnet/d-wave superconductor heterostructures focus mainly on the effects at or near the interfaces while the response of bulk properties to heterostructuring is overlooked. Here we use resonant soft x-ray scattering spectroscopy to reveal a novel c-axis ferromagnetic coupling between the in-plane Cu spins in YBa$_2$ Cu$_3$ O$_{7-x}$ (YBCO) superconductor when it is grown on top of ferromagnetic La$_{0.7}$ Ca$_{0.3}$ MnO$_3$ (LCMO) manganite layer. This coupling, present in both normal and superconducting states of YBCO, is sensitive to the interfacial termination such …
Based on first-principles calculations including a Coulomb repulsion term, we identify trends in the electronic reconstruction of $A$NiO$_2$/SrTiO$_3$(001) ($A=$ Pr, La) and $A$CuO$_2$/SrTiO$_3$(001) ($A=$ Ca, Sr). Common to all cases is the emergence of a quasi-two-dimensional electron gas (q2DEG) in SrTiO$_3$(001), albeit the higher polarity mismatch at the interface of nickelates vs. cuprates to the nonpolar SrTiO$_3(001)$ substrate (${3+}/0$ vs. ${2+}/0$) results in an enhanced q2DEG carrier density. The simulations reveal a significant dependence of the interfacial Ti $3d_{xy}$ band bendi…
As-grown AgF2 has a remarkably similar electronic structure as insulating cuprates, but it is extremely electronegative, which makes it hard to handle and dope. Furthermore, buckling of layers reduces magnetic interactions and enhances unwanted self-trapping lattice effects. We argue that epitaxial engineering can solve all these problems. By using a high throughput approach and first principle computations, we find a set of candidate substrates which can sustain the chemical aggressiveness of AgF2 and at the same time have good lattice parameter matching for heteroepitaxy, enhancing AgF2 magn…
We present a methodology based on \textit{ex-situ} (post-growth) electrochemistry to control the oxygen concentration in thin films of the superconducting oxide La$_2$CuO$_{4+y}$ grown epitaxially on substrates of isostructural LaSrAlO$_4$. The superconducting transition temperature, which depends on the oxygen concentration, can be tuned by adjusting the pH level of the base solution used for the electrochemical reaction. As our main finding, we demonstrate that the dopant oxygens can either occupy the interstitial layer in an orientationally disordered state or organize into a crystalline ph…
We report the phase diagram of Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$ infinite layer thin films grown on SrTiO$_3$. A superconducting dome spanning $0.125 < x < 0.25$ is found, remarkably similar to cuprates, albeit over a narrower doping window. However, while cuprate superconductivity is bounded by an insulator for underdoping and a metal for overdoping, here we observe weakly insulating behavior on either side of the dome. Furthermore, the normal state Hall coefficient is always small and proximate to a continuous zero crossing in doping and in temperature, in contrast to the $\sim 1/x$ dependence observe…
This thesis presents a systematic study of magnetotransport and magnetic ordering in manganite-high T$_c$ cuprate spin valve structures. YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$ - La$_{2 / 3}$Sr$_{1 / 3}$MnO$_{3}$ heterostructures of (110) orientation are grown to allow direct injection of spin polarized holes from the La$_{2 / 3}$Sr$_{1 / 3}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) into the CuO$_2$ superconducting planes of the YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$ (YBCO). Galvanomagnetic studies on the LSMO-YBCO-LSMO trilayers reveal unusually high AMR ($\sim$72000%) on rotating the field in the plane of the heterostructure whose magnetic grou…
We have grown underdoped (x = 0.11, 0.12) and optimally doped (x = 0.16) La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) crystals by traveling-solvent floating-zone (TSFZ) technique. In order to obtain LSCO single crystals of high quality, we have made much effort to optimize the preparation procedures. For example, we have adopted sol-gel route to prepare highly fine and homogeneous LSCO precursor powder, and used quite slow growth rate. The sizable grown crystal ingots are typically about 6.6 mm in diameter and 100 mm in length, and no impurity phases were detected. The high quality of grown crystals has been verified …
In this work, the high entropy oxide A2CuO4 Ruddlesden-Popper (La0.2Pr0.2Nd0.2Sm0.2Eu0.2)2CuO4 is explored by charge doping with Ce+4 and Sr+2 at concentrations known to induce superconductivity in the simple parent compounds, Nd2CuO4 and La2CuO4. Electron doped (La0.185Pr0.185Nd0.185Sm0.185Eu0.185Ce0.075)2CuO4 and hole doped (La0.18Pr0.18Nd0.18Sm0.18Eu0.18Sr0.1)2CuO4 are synthesized and shown to be single crystal, epitaxially strained, and highly uniform. Transport measurements demonstrate that all as-grown films are insulating regardless of doping. Annealing studies show that resistivity can…
We show that the quality of Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4 films grown by pulsed laser deposition can be enhanced by using a non-stoichiometric target with extra copper added to suppress the formation of a parasitic (Nd, Ce)2O3 phase. The properties of these films are less dependent on the exact annealing procedure after deposition as compared to films grown from a stoichiometric target. Film growth can be followed by a 1 bar oxygen annealing, after an initial vacuum annealing, while retaining the superconducting properties and quality. This enables the integration of electron-doped cuprates with their hole…
Ultra-thin films of the electron doped manganite La$_{0.8}$Ce$_{0.2}$MnO$_3$ were grown in a layer-by-layer growth mode on SrTiO$_3$ (001) substrates by pulsed laser interval deposition. High structural quality and surface morphology was confirmed by a combination of synchrotron based x-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. Resonant X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements confirm the presence of Ce$^{+4}$ and Mn$^{+2}$ ions. In addition, the electron doping signature was corroborated by Hall effect measurements. All grown films show ferromagnetic ground state as revealed by both XMCD…
Recent developments in high-temperature superconductivity highlight a generic tendency of the cuprates to develop competing electronic (charge) supermodulations. While coupled to the lattice and showing different characteristics in different materials, these supermodulations themselves are generally conceived to be quasi-two-dimensional, residing mainly in individual CuO2 planes, and poorly correlated along the c-axis. Here we observed with resonant elastic x-ray scattering a distinct type of electronic supermodulation in YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) thin films grown epitaxially on La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO)…
Research on the oxide perovskites has uncovered electronic properties that are strikingly enhanced compared with those in conventional metals. Examples are the high critical temperatures of the cuprate superconductors and the colossal magnetoresistance in the manganites. The conducting layered cobaltate $\rm Na_xCoO_2$ displays several interesting electronic phases as $x$ is varied including water-induced superconductivity and an insulating state that is destroyed by field. Initial measurements showed that, in the as-grown composition, $\rm Na_xCoO_2$ displays moderately large thermopower $S$ …
Superconductivity in the cuprate superconductors and the Fe-based superconductors is realized by doping the parent compound with charge carriers, or by application of high pressure, to suppress the antiferromagnetic state. Such a rich phase diagram is important in understanding superconductivity mechanism and other physics in the Cu- and Fe-based high temperature superconductors. In this paper, we report a phase diagram in the single-layer FeSe films grown on SrTiO3 substrate by an annealing procedure to tune the charge carrier concentration over a wide range. A dramatic change of the band str…
Iron with a large magnetic moment was widely believed to be harmful to the emergence of superconductivity because of the competition between the static ordering of electron spins and the dynamic formation of electron pairs (Cooper pairs). Thus, the discovery of a high critical temperature (Tc) iron-based superconductor (IBSC) in 2008 was accepted with surprise in the condensed matter community and rekindled extensive study globally. IBSCs have since grown to become a new class of high-Tc superconductors next to the high-Tc cuprates discovered in 1986. The rapid research progress in the science…
In high temperature cuprate superconductors, it is now generally agreed that the parent compound is a Mott insulator and superconductivity is realized by doping the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator. In the iron-based superconductors, however, the parent compound is mostly antiferromagnetic metal, raising a debate on whether an appropriate starting point should go with an itinerant picture or a localized picture. It has been proposed theoretically that the parent compound of the iron-based superconductors may be on the verge of a Mott insulator, but so far no clear experimental evidence of dopi…
