This paper studies unique continuation for weakly degenerate parabolic equations in one space dimension. A new Carleman estimate of local type is obtained to deduce that all solutions that vanish on the degeneracy set, together with their conormal derivative, are identically equal to zero. An approximate controllability result for weakly degenerate parabolic equations under Dirichlet boundary condition is deduced.
In this paper we present a null controllability result for a degenerate semilinear parabolic equation with first order terms. The main result is obtained after the proof of a new Carleman inequality for a degenerate linear parabolic equation with first order terms.
In this paper, we analyze the null controllability property for a degenerate parabolic equation involving memory terms with a locally distributed control. We first derive a null controllability result for a nonhomogeneous degenerate heat equation via new Carleman estimates with weighted time functions that do not blow up at t= 0. Then this result is successfully used with a classical fixed point to obtain null controllability for the initial memory system.
In the discrete setting of one-dimensional finite-differences we prove a Carleman estimate for a semi-discretization of the parabolic operator $\partial_t-\partial_x (c\partial_x)$ where the diffusion coefficient $c$ has a jump. As a consequence of this Carleman estimate, we deduce consistent null-controllability results for classes of semi-linear parabolic equations.
We prove null controllability for linear and semilinear heat equations with dynamic boundary conditions of surface diffusion type. The results are based on a new Carleman estimate for this type of boundary conditions.
We consider a system of two parabolic equations with a forcing term present in one equation and a cubic coupling term in the other one. We prove that the system is locally null controllable.
Let us consider a nonlinear degenerate reaction-diffusion equation with application to climate science. After proving that the solution remains nonnegative at any time, when the initial state is nonnegative, we prove the approximate controllability between nonnegative states at any time via multiplicative controls, that is, using as control the reaction coefficient.
In this paper, we prove a Carleman estimate for fully-discrete approximations of parabolic operators in which the discrete parameters $h$ and $\triangle t$ are connected to the large Carleman parameter. We use this estimate to obtain relaxed observability inequalities which yield, by duality, controllability results for fully-discrete linear and semilinear parabolic equations.
We show Carleman estimates, observability inequalities and null controllability results for parabolic equations with non smooth coefficients degenerating at an interior point.
In this paper, we study the global approximate multiplicative controllability for nonlinear degenerate parabolic Cauchy-Neumann problems. First, we will obtain embedding results for weighted Sobolev spaces, that have proved decisive in reaching well-posedness for nonlinear degenerate problems. Then, we show that the above systems can be steered in $L^2$ from any nonzero, nonnegative initial state into any neighborhood of any desirable nonnegative target-state by bilinear piecewise static controls. Moreover, we extend the above result relaxing the sign constraint on the initial date.
The aim of this paper is to perform a Stackelberg strategy to control parabolic equations. We have one control, \textit{the leader}, that is responsible for a null controllability property; additionally, we have a control \textit{the follower} that solves a robust control objective. That means, that we seek for a saddle point of a cost functional. In this way, the follower control is not sensitive to a broad class of external disturbances. As far as we know, the idea of combining robustness with a Stackelberg strategy is new in literature
We consider a fully-discrete approximations of 1-D heat equation with dynamic boundary conditions for which we provide a controllability result. The proof of this result is based on a relaxed observability inequality for the corresponding adjoint system. This is done by using a suitable Carleman estimate for such models where the discrete parameters $h$ and $Δt$ are connected to the one of the large Carleman parameters.
This paper deals with the analysis of the internal control with constraint of positive kind of a parabolic PDE with nonlinear diffusion when the time horizon is large enough. The minimal controllability time will be strictly positive. We prove a global steady state constrained controllability result for a quasilinear parabolic with nonlinearity in the diffusion term. Then, under suitable dissipative assumption in the system and local controllability results, we conclude the result to any initial datum and any target trajectory.
In this paper, we consider forward stochastic nonlinear parabolic equations, with a control localized in the drift term. Under suitable assumptions, we prove the small-time global null-controllability, with a truncated nonlinearity. We also prove the statistical local null-controllability of the true system. The proof relies on a precise estimation of the cost of null-controllability of the stochastic heat equation and on an adaptation of the source term method to the stochastic setting. The main difficulty comes from the estimation of the nonlinearity in the fixed point argument due to the la…
In this paper, we consider a parabolic PDE on a torus of arbitrary dimension. The nonlinear term is a smooth function of polynomial growth of any degree. In this general setting, the corresponding Cauchy problem is not necessarily well posed. We show that the equation in question is approximately controllable by only a finite number of Fourier modes. This result is proved by using some ideas from the geometric control theory introduced by Agrachev and Sarychev.
One proves that the linear and semilinear stochastic parabolic equations with a multiplicative noise with a finite number of modes are exactly null controllable.
This paper is devoted to a study of the unique continuation property for stochastic parabolic equations. Due to the adapted nature of solutions in the stochastic situation, classical approaches to treat the the unique continuation problem for deterministic equations do not work. Our method is based on a suitable partial Holmgren coordinate transform and a stochastic version of Carleman-type estimate.
This paper deals with the hierarchical control of the parabolic equation. We use Stackelberg{Nash strategies. As usual, we consider one leader and two followers. To each leader we associate a Nash equilibrium corresponding to a bi-objective optimal control problem, then, we look for a leader that solves null controllability e with trajectories problem. We consider linear and nonlinear equations in dimension 1.
In a separable Hilbert space $X$, we study the linear evolution equation \begin{equation*} u'(t)+Au(t)+p(t)Bu(t)=0, \end{equation*} where $A$ is an accretive self-adjoint linear operator, $B$ is a bounded linear operator on $X$, and $p\in L^2_{loc}(0,+\infty)$ is a bilinear control. We give sufficient conditions in order for the above control system to be locally controllable to the ground state solution, that is, the solution of the free equation ($p\equiv0$) starting from the ground state of $A$. We also derive global controllability results in large time and discuss applications to paraboli…
This paper deals with a multi-objective control problem for a class of nonlocal parabolic equations, where the non-locality is expressed through an integral kernel. We present the Stackelberg strategy that combines the concepts of controllability to trajectories with optimal control. The strategy involves two controls: a main control (the leader) and a secondary control (the follower). The leader solves a controllability to trajectories problem which consists to drive the state of the system to a prescribed target at a final time while the follower solves an optimal control problem which consi…
In this paper we prove a uniform controllability result for a fourth order parabolic partial differential equation which includes a transport term, when the coefficients of higher order terms vanish. We prove the null controllability of the system with a single boundary control, and also it is obtained that the cost of the control decreases to zero, under the hypothesis of the control time being large enough. Moreover, we prove that, if the control time is small enough, the cost of controllability increases to infinity.
This paper is devoted to the controllability of linear systems of two coupled parabolic equations when the coupling involves a space dependent first order term. This system is set on an bounded interval, and the first equation is controlled by a force supported in a subinterval of I or on the boundary. In the case where the intersection of the coupling and control domains is nonempty, we prove null controllability at any time. Otherwise, we provide a minimal time for null controllability. Finally we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the approximate controllability. The main technic…
We consider systems of parabolic equations coupled in zero order terms in a star-like or a tree-like shape, with an internal control acting in only one of the equations. We obtain local exact controllability to the stationary solutions of the system, under hypotheses concerning the supports of the coupling functions. The key point is establishing Carleman estimates with appropriate observation operators for the adjoint to the linearized system, which allows the study of the controllability problem, in either linear or nonlinear cases, in an $L^\infty$ framework.
In a separable Hilbert space $X$, we study the controlled evolution equation \begin{equation*} u'(t)+Au(t)+p(t)Bu(t)=0, \end{equation*} where $A\geq-σI$ ($σ\geq0$) is a self-adjoint linear operator, $B$ is a bounded linear operator on $X$, and $p\in L^2_{loc}(0,+\infty)$ is a bilinear control. We give sufficient conditions in order for the above nonlinear control system to be locally controllable to the $j$th eigensolution for any $j\geq1$. We also derive semi-global controllability results in large time and discuss applications to parabolic equations in low space dimension. Our method is cons…
This paper is devoted to the partial null controllability issue of parabolic linear systems with n equations. Given a bounded domain in R N, we study the effect of m localized controls in a nonempty open subset only controlling p components of the solution (p, m < n). The first main result of this paper is a necessary and sufficient condition when the coupling and control matrices are constant. The second result provides, in a first step, a sufficient condition of partial null controllability when the matrices only depend on time. In a second step, through an example of partially controlled 2x…
We prove the null controllability of a one dimensional degenerate parabolic equation with drift and a singular potential. We study the case the potential arises at the left end point and the weighted Dirichlet boundary control is located at this point. We get a spectral decomposition of a suitable operator, defined in a weighted Sobolev space, involving Bessel functions and their zeros, then we use the moment method by Fattorini and Russell to obtain an upper estimate of the cost of controllability. We also obtain a lower estimate of the cost of controllability by using a representation theore…
This paper is devoted to studying the null and approximate controllability of two linear coupled parabolic equations posed on a smooth domain of R^N (N>1) with coupling terms of zero and first orders and one control localized in some arbitrary nonempty open subset of the domain. We prove the null controllability under a new sufficient condition and we also provide the first example of a not approximately controllable system in the case where the support of one of the nontrivial first order coupling terms intersects the control domain.
In this article we study a controllability problem for a parabolic and a hyperbolic partial differential equations in which the control is the shape of the domain where the equation holds. The quantity to be controlled is the trace of the solution into an open subdomain and at a given time, when the right hand side source term is known. The mapping that associates this trace to the shape of the domain is nonlinear. We show (i) an approximate controllability property for the linearized parabolic problem and (ii) an exact local controllability property for the linearized and the nonlinear equati…
The goal of the present article is to study controllability properties of mixed systems of linear parabolic-transport equations, with possibly non-diagonalizable diffusion matrix, on the one-dimensional torus. The equations are coupled by zero or first order coupling terms, with constant coupling matrices, without any structure assumptions on them. The distributed control acts through a constant matrix operator on the system, so that there might be notably less controls than equations, encompassing the case of indirect and simultaneous controllability. More precisely, we prove that in small ti…
In this paper, we establish a globally quantitative estimate of unique continuation at one time point for solutions of parabolic equations with Neumann boundary conditions in bounded domains. Our proof is mainly based on Carleman commutator estimates and a global frequency function argument, which is motivated from a recent work [5]. As an application, we obtain an observability inequality from measurable sets in time for all solutions of the above equations.
We study the null-controllability of some hypoelliptic quadratic parabolic equations posed on the whole Euclidean space with moving control supports, and provide necessary or sufficient geometric conditions on the moving control supports to ensure null-controllability. The first class of equations is the one associated to non-autonomous Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators satisfying a generalized Kalman rank condition. In particular, when the moving control supports comply with the flow associated to the transport part of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators, a necessary and sufficient condition for null…
We study (approximate) null-controllability of parabolic equations in $L_p(\mathbb{R}^d)$ and provide explicit bounds on the control cost. In particular we consider systems of the form $\dot{x}(t) = -A_p x(t) + \mathbf{1}_E u(t)$, $x(0) = x_0\in L_p (\mathbb{R}^d)$, with interior control on a so-called thick set $E \subset \mathbb{R}^d$, where $p\in [1,\infty)$, and where $A$ is an elliptic operator of order $m \in \mathbb{N}$ in $L_p(\mathbb{R}^d)$. We prove null-controllability of this system via duality and a sufficient condition for observability. This condition is given by an uncertainty …
We establish a strong unique continuation property for stochastic parabolic equations. Our method is based on a suitable stochastic version of Carleman estimate. As far as we know, this is the first result for strong unique continuation property of stochastic partial differential equations.
This work is devoted to the strong unique continuation problem for second order parabolic equations with nonsmooth coefficients. Introduction and bibliography have been revised.
