This is the fourth of five papers that construct an isomorphism between the Seiberg-Witten Floer homology and the Heegaard Floer homology of a given compact, oriented 3-manifold. The isomorphism is given as a composition of three isomorphisms; the first of these relates a version of embedded contact homology on an an auxillary manifold to the Heegaard Floer homology on the original. The second isomorphism relates the relevant version of the embedded contact homology on the auxilliary manifold with a version of the Seiberg-Witten Floer homology on this same manifold. The third isomorphism relates the Seiberg-Witten Floer homology on the auxilliary manifold with the appropriate version of Seiberg-Witten Floer homology on the original manifold. The paper describes the second of these isomorphisms.
Various Seiberg-Witten Floer cohomologies are defined for a closed, oriented 3-manifold; and if it is the mapping torus of an area-preserving surface automorphism, it has an associated periodic Floer homology as defined by Michael Hutchings. We construct an isomorphism between a certain version of Seiberg-Witten Floer cohomology and the corresponding periodic Floer homology, and describe some immediate consequences.
This is the last of five papers that construct an isomorphism between the Seiberg-Witten Floer homology and the Heegaard Floer homology of a given compact, oriented 3-manifold.
Let M be a closed, connected and oriented 3-manifold. This article is the first of a five part series that constructs an isomorphism between the Heegaard Floer homology groups of M and the corresponding Seiberg-Witten Floer homology groups of M.
We show that monopole Floer homology (as defined by Kronheimer and Mrowka) is isomorphic to the S^1-equivariant homology of the Seiberg-Witten Floer spectrum constructed by the second author.
Let $Y$ be a closed and oriented $3$-manifold. We define different versions of unfolded Seiberg-Witten Floer spectra for $Y$. These invariants generalize Manolescu's Seiberg-Witten Floer spectrum for rational homology $3$-spheres. We also compute some examples when $Y$ is a Seifert space.
This note corrects an erroneous statement in Lemma 3.8 of the author's paper Embedded Contact Homology and Seiberg-Witten Floer Homology IV which was published in Volume 14 of Geometry and Topology in 2009.
This is an expansion on my talk at the Geometry and Topology conference at McMaster University, May 2004. We outline a program to relate the Heegaard Floer homologies of Ozsvath-Szabo, and Seiberg-Witten-Floer homologies as defined by Kronheimer-Mrowka. The center-piece of this program is the construction of an intermediate version of Floer theory, which exhibits characteristics of both theories.
Given a three-manifold with b_1=1 and a nontorsion spin^c structure, we use finite dimensional approximation to construct from the Seiberg-Witten equations two invariants in the form of a periodic pro-spectra. Various functors applied to these invariants give different flavors of Seiberg-Witten Floer homology. We also construct stable homotopy versions of the relative Seiberg-Witten invariants for certain four-manifolds with boundary.
We compute the $\mathrm{Pin}(2)$-equivariant Seiberg-Witten Floer homology of Seifert rational homology three-spheres in terms of their Heegaard Floer homology. As a result of this computation, we prove Manolescu's conjecture that $β=-\barμ$ for Seifert integral homology three-spheres. We show that the Manolescu invariants $α, β,$ and $γ$ give new obstructions to homology cobordisms between Seifert fiber spaces, and that many Seifert homology spheres $Σ(a_1,...,a_n)$ are not homology cobordant to any $-Σ(b_1,...,b_n)$. We then use the same invariants to give an example of an integral homology …
In joint work with Yang Huang, we defined a canonical absolute grading on Heegaard Floer homology by homotopy classes of oriented 2-plane fields. A similar grading was defined on embedded contact homology by Michael Hutchings. In this paper we show that the isomorphism between these homology theories defined by Colin-Ghiggini-Honda preserves this grading.
We outline Hutchings's prescription that produces an ECH analog of Latschev and Wendl's algebraic $k$-torsion in the context of $ech$, a variant of ECH used in a proof of the isomorphism between Heegaard Floer and Seiberg-Witten Floer homologies; and we explain how it translates into Heegaard Floer homology.
This is the third of five papers that construct an isomorphism between the Seiberg-Witten Floer homology and the Heegaard Floer homology of a given compact, oriented 3-manifold. The isomorphism is given as a composition of three isomorphisms; the first of these relates a version of embedded contact homology on an an auxillary manifold to the Heegaard Floer homology on the original. This paper describes the relationship between the differential on the embedded contact homology chain complex and the differential on the Heegaard Floer chain complex. The paper also describes the relationship betwe…
Using Furuta's idea of finite dimensional approximation in Seiberg-Witten theory, we refine Seiberg-Witten Floer homology to obtain an invariant of homology 3-spheres which lives in the S^1-equivariant graded suspension category. In particular, this gives a construction of Seiberg-Witten Floer homology that avoids the delicate transversality problems in the standard approach. We also define a relative invariant of four-manifolds with boundary which generalizes the Bauer-Furuta stable homotopy invariant of closed four-manifolds.
This is the second of five papers that construct an isomorphism between the Seiberg-Witten Floer homology and the Heegaard Floer homology of a given compact, oriented 3-manifold. The isomorphism is given as a composition of three isomorphisms; the first of these relates a version of embedded contact homology on an an auxillary manifold to the Heegaard Floer homology on the original. This paper describes this auxilliary manifold, its geometry, and the relationship between the generators of the embedded contact homology chain complex and those of the Heegaard Floer chain complex. The pseudoholom…
We define Pin(2)-equivariant Seiberg-Witten Floer homology for rational homology 3-spheres equipped with a spin structure. The analogue of Froyshov's correction term in this setting is an integer-valued invariant of homology cobordism whose mod 2 reduction is the Rokhlin invariant. As an application, we show that there are no homology 3-spheres Y of Rokhlin invariant one such that Y # Y bounds an acyclic smooth 4-manifold. By previous work of Galewski-Stern and Matumoto, this implies the existence of non-triangulable high-dimensional manifolds.
We introduce a Floer homotopy version of the contact invariant introduced by Kronheimer-Mrowka-Ozváth-Szabó. Moreover, we prove a gluing formula relating our invariant with the first author's Bauer-Furuta type invariant, which refines Kronheimer-Mrowka's invariant for 4-manifolds with contact boundary. As an application, we give a constraint for a certain class of symplectic fillings using equivariant KO-cohomology.
We will define a version of Seiberg-Witten-Floer stable homotopy types for a closed, oriented 3-manifold $Y$ with $b_1(Y) > 0$ and a spin-c structure $\mathfrak{c}$ on $Y$ with $c_1(\mathfrak{c})$ torsion under an assumption on $Y$. Using the Seiberg-Witten-Floer stable homotopy type, we will construct a gluing formula for the stable cohomotopy version of Seiberg-Witten invariants of a closed 4-manifold $X$ which has a decomposition $X = X_1 \cup_Y X_2$ along $Y$.
Motivated by various possible generalizations of Taubes's \(SW=Gr\) theorem [T] to Floer-theoretic setting, we prove certain variants of Taubes's convergence theorem in \cite{T} (the first part of his proof of \(SW=Gr\)). In place of the closed symplectic 4-manifold considered in [T], this article considers non-compact manifolds with cylindrical ends, equipped with a self-dual harmonic 2-form with non-degenerate zeroes. This extends and simplifies some central technical ingredients of the author's prior work in [LT] and [KLT5]. Other expected applications include: extending the \(HM=PFH\) theo…
We survey the different versions of Floer homology that can be associated to three-manifolds. We also discuss their applications, particularly to questions about surgery, homology cobordism, and four-manifolds with boundary. We then describe Floer stable homotopy types, the related Pin(2)-equivariant Seiberg-Witten Floer homology, and its application to the triangulation conjecture.
In this paper, we give a systematic study of Seiberg-Witten theory on closed oriented manifold $M$ with codimension-$3$ oriented Riemannian foliation $F$. Under a certain topological condition, we construct the basic Seiberg-Witten invariant and the monopole Floer homologies $\bar{HM}(M,F,\mfs;Γ),~\hat{HM}(M,F,\mfs;Γ), ~\widecheck{HM}(M,F,\mfs;Γ)$, for each transverse \spinc structure $\mfs$, where $Γ$ is a complete local system. We will show that these homologies are independent of the bundle-like metric and generic perturbation. The major difference between the basic monopole Floer homologie…
This paper is the sequel to "The equivalence of Heegaard Floer homology and embedded contact homology via open book decompositions I" and is devoted to proving some of the technical parts of the HF=ECH isomorphism.
In a recent paper, Lin, Ruberman and Saveliev proved a splitting formula expressing the Seiberg-Witten invariant $λ_{SW}(X)$ of a smooth $4$-manifold with rational homology of $S^1\times S^3$ in terms of the Frøyshov invariant $h(X)$ and a Lefschetz number in reduced monopole Floer homology. In this note we observe that a similar splitting formula holds in reduced instanton Floer homology.
Floer field theory is a construction principle for e.g. 3-manifold invariants via decomposition in a bordism category and a functor to the symplectic category, and is conjectured to have natural 4-dimensional extensions. This survey provides an introduction to the categorical language for the construction and extension principles and provides the basic intuition for two gauge theoretic examples which conceptually frame Atiyah-Floer type conjectures in Donaldson theory as well as the relations of Heegaard Floer homology to Seiberg-Witten theory.
Seiberg-Witten (Floer) theory, Ozsvath-Szabo's Heegaard Floer theory, Hutchings's embedded contact homology, in different stages of development, define (or are expected to define) packages of invariants for 3- and 4-manifolds (including manifolds with boundary and manifolds with certain types of corners). We describe what are known about their relationship, what are expected, and raise some questions along the way.
In this article, we investigate the cobordism maps on periodic Floer homology (PFH). In the first part of the paper, we define the cobordism maps on PFH via Seiberg Witten theory as well as the isomorphism between PFH and Seiberg Witten cohomology. Furthermore, we show that the maps satisfy the holomorphic curve axiom. In the second part of the paper, we give an alternative definition of these maps by using holomorphic curve method, provided that the symplectic cobordisms are Lefschetz fibration satisfying certain nice conditions. Under additionally certain monotonicity assumptions, we show th…
We use Heegaard Floer homology to define an invariant of homology cobordism. This invariant is isomorphic to a summand of the reduced Heegaard Floer homology of a rational homology sphere equipped with a spin structure and is analogous to Stoffregen's connected Seiberg-Witten Floer homology. We use this invariant to study the structure of the homology cobordism group and, along the way, compute the involutive correction terms for certain families of three-manifolds.
We study the monopole Floer homology of a SOLV rational homology sphere Y from the point of view of spectral theory. Applying ideas of Fourier analysis on solvable groups, we show that for suitable SOLV metrics on Y, small regular perturbations of the Seiberg-Witten equations do not admit irreducible solutions; in particular, this provides a geometric proof that Y is an L-space.
In the present work we generalize the construction of monopole Floer homology due to Kronheimer and Mrowka to the case of a gradient flow with Morse-Bott singularities. Focusing then on the special case of a three-manifold equipped with a spin$^c$ structure isomorphic to its conjugate, we define the counterpart in this context of Manolescu's recent $\mathrm{Pin}(2)$-equivariant Seiberg-Witten-Floer homology. In particular, we provide an alternative approach to his disproof of the celebrated Triangulation conjecture.
Given a closed oriented 3-manifold M, we establish an isomorphism between the Heegaard Floer homology group HF^+(-M) and the embedded contact homology group ECH(M). Starting from an open book decomposition (S,h) of M, we construct a chain map Φ^+ from a Heegaard Floer chain complex associated to (S,h) to an embedded contact homology chain complex for a contact form supported by (S,h). The chain map Φ^+ commutes up to homotopy with the U-maps defined on both sides and reduces to the quasi-isomorphism Φfrom "The equivalence of Heegaard Floer homology and embedded contact homology I, II" on subco…
This is a companion paper to earlier work of the authors, which interprets the Heegaard Floer homology for a manifold with torus boundary in terms of immersed curves in a punctured torus. We prove a variety of properties of this invariant, paying particular attention to its relation to knot Floer homology, the Thurston norm, and the Turaev torsion. We also give a geometric description of the gradings package from bordered Heegaard Floer homology and establish a symmetry under spin$^c$ conjugation; this symmetry gives rise to genus one mutation invariance in Heegaard Floer homology for closed t…
