The Schur-Horn Theorem states that there exists a self-adjoint matrix with a given spectrum and diagonal if and only if the spectrum majorizes the diagonal. Though the original proof of this result was nonconstructive, several constructive proofs have subsequently been found. Most of these constructive proofs rely on Givens rotations, and none have been shown to be able to produce every example of such a matrix. We introduce a new construction method that is able to do so. This method is based on recent advances in finite frame theory which show how to construct frames whose frame operator has a given prescribed spectrum and whose vectors have given prescribed lengths. This frame construction requires one to find a sequence of eigensteps, that is, a sequence of interlacing spectra that satisfy certain trace considerations. In this paper, we show how to explicitly construct every such sequence of eigensteps. Here, the key idea is to visualize eigenstep construction as iteratively building a staircase. This visualization leads to an algorithm, dubbed Top Kill, which produces a valid sequence of eigensteps whenever it is possible to do so. We then build on Top Kill to explicitly parametrize the set of all valid eigensteps. This yields an explicit method for constructing all self-adjoint matrices with a given spectrum and diagonal, and moreover all frames whose frame operator has a given spectrum and whose elements have given lengths.
Given a finite set $X\subseteq\R$ we characterize the diagonals of self-adjoint operators with spectrum $X$. Our result extends the Schur-Horn theorem from a finite dimensional setting to an infinite dimensional Hilbert space analogous to Kadison's theorem for orthogonal projections and the second author's result for operators with three point spectrum.
Let $M$ be a compact Hausdorff space. We prove that in this paper, every self--adjoint matrix over $C(M)$ is approximately diagonalizable iff $\dim M\le 2$ and $\HO^2(M,\mathbb Z)\cong 0$. Using this result, we show that every unitary matrix over $C(M)$ is approximately diagonalizable iff $\dim M\le 2$, $\HO^1(M,\mathbb Z)\cong\HO^2(M,\mathbb Z)\cong 0$ when $M$ is a compact metric space.
Symplectic self-adjointness of Hamiltonian operator matrices is studied, which arises in symplectic elasticity and optimal control. For the cases of diagonal domain and off-diagonal domain, necessary and sufficient conditions are shown. The proofs use Frobenius-Schur fractorizations of unbounded operator matrices. Under additional assumptions, sufficient conditions based on perturbation method are obtained. The theory is applied to a problem in symplectic elasticity.
We study the Hodge-Dirac operators $\mathcal{D}$ associated with a class of non-symmetric Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators $\mathcal{L}$ in infinite dimensions. For $p\in (1,\infty)$ we prove that $i\mathcal{D}$ generates a $C_0$-group in $L^p$ with respect to the invariant measure if and only if $p=2$ and $\mathcal{L}$ is self-adjoint. An explicit representation of this $C_0$-group in $L^2$ is given and we prove that it has finite speed of propagation. Furthermore we prove $L^2$ off-diagonal estimates for various operators associated with $\mathcal{L}$, both in the self-adjoint and the non-self-a…
The eigenvalues of a self-adjoint nxn matrix A can be put into a decreasing sequence $λ=(λ_1,...,λ_n)$, with repetitions according to multiplicity, and the diagonal of A is a point of $R^n$ that bears some relation to $λ$. The Schur-Horn theorem characterizes that relation in terms of a system of linear inequalities. We give a new proof of the latter result for positive trace-class operators on infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces, generalizing results of one of us on the diagonals of projections. We also establish an appropriate counterpart of the Schur inequalities that relate spectral proper…
We construct operators which factorize the transfer function associated with a non-self-adjoint 2x2 operator matrix whose diagonal entries can have overlapping spectra and whose off-diagonal entries are unbounded operators.
A theorem of Mirsky provides necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of an N-square complex matrix with prescribed diagonal entries and prescribed eigenvalues. We give a simple inductive proof of this theorem.
We analyze the interplay between maximal/minimal/adjoint ideals of multilinear operators (between sequence spaces) and their associated Köthe sequence spaces. We establish relationships with spaces of multipliers and apply these results to describe diagonal multilinear operators from Lorentz sequence spaces. We also define and study some properties of the ideal of $(E;p)$-summing multilinear mappings, a natural extension of the linear ideal of absolutely $(E;p)$-summing operators.
We investigate the topological and metric structure of the set of idempotent operators and projections which have prescribed diagonal entries with respect to a fixed orthonormal basis of a Hilbert space. As an application, we settle some cases of conjectures of Larson, Dykema, and Strawn on the connectedness of the set of unit-norm tight frames.
We characterize diagonals of unbounded self-adjoint operators on a Hilbert space H that have only discrete spectrum, i.e., with empty essential spectrum. Our result extends the Schur-Horn theorem from a finite dimensional setting to an infinite dimensional Hilbert space, analogous to Kadison's theorem for orthogonal projections, Kaftal and Weiss' results for positive compact operators, and Bownik and Jasper's characterization for operators with finite spectrum. Furthermore, we show that if a symmetric unbounded operator E on H has a nondecreasing unbounded diagonal, then any sequence that weak…
We define the (convex) joint numerical range for an infinite family of compact operators in a Hilbert space H. We use this set to determine whether a self-adjoint compact operator A with {||A||, -||A||} in its spectrum is minimal respect to the set of diagonals in a fixed basis E of H in the operator norm, that is ||A|| <= ||A+D||, for all diagonal D. We also describe the moment set m_S = conv{ |v|^2 : v in S and ||v|| = 1 } of a subspace S of H in terms of joint numerical ranges and obtain equivalences between the intersection of moments of two subspaces and of its two related joint numerical…
In this work we introduce a new measure for the dispersion of the spectral scale of a Hermitian (self-adjoint) operator acting on a separable infinite dimensional Hilbert space that we call spectral spread. Then, we obtain some submajorization inequalities involving the spectral spread of self-adjoint operators, that are related to Tao's inequalities for anti-diagonal blocks of positive operators, Kittaneh's commutator inequalities for positive operators and also related to the Arithmetic-Geometric mean inequality. In turn, these submajorization relations imply inequalities for unitarily invar…
We characterize the set of diagonals of the unitary orbit of a self-adjoint operator with three points in the spectrum. Our result gives a Schur-Horn theorem for operators with three point spectrum analogous to Kadison's result for orthogonal projections.
We characterize the set of diagonals of the unitary orbit of a self-adjoint operator with a finite spectrum. Our result extends the Schur-Horn theorem from a finite dimensional setting to an infinite dimensional Hilbert space analogous to Kadison's theorem for orthogonal projections and the second author's result for operators with three point spectrum.
It is shown that Jamison sequences, introduced in 2007 by Badea and Grivaux ([C. Badea and S. Grivaux, Unimodular eigenvalues, uniformly distributed sequences and linear dynamics, Adv. Math. 211 (2007), no. 2, 766--793]), arise naturally in the study of topological groups with no small subgroups, of Banach or normed algebra elements whose powers are close to identity along subsequences, and in characterizations of (self-adjoint) positive operators by the accretiveness of some of their powers. The common core of these results is a description of those sequences for which non-identity elements i…
We consider an off-diagonal self-adjoint finite rank perturbation of a self-adjoint operator in a complex separable Hilbert space $\mathfrak{H}_0 \oplus \mathfrak{H}_1$, where $\mathfrak{H}_1$ is finite dimensional. We describe the singular spectrum of the perturbed operator and establish a connection with solutions to the operator Riccati equation. In particular, we prove existence results for solutions in the case where the whole Hilbert space is finite dimensional.
Consider an elliptic self-adjoint pseudodifferential operator $A$ acting on $m$-columns of half-densities on a closed manifold $M$, whose principal symbol is assumed to have simple eigenvalues. Relying on a basis of pseudodifferential projections commuting with $A$, we construct an almost-unitary pseudodifferential operator that diagonalizes $A$ modulo an infinitely smoothing operator. We provide an invariant algorithm for the computation of its full symbol, as well as an explicit closed formula for its subprincipal symbol. Finally, we give a quantitative description of the relation between th…
We develop direct and inverse spectral analysis for finite and semi-infinite non-self-adjoint Jacobi matrices with a rank one imaginary part. It is shown that given a set of $n$ not necessarily distinct non-real numbers in the open upper (lower) half-plane uniquely determines a n x n Jacobi matrix with a rank one imaginary part having those numbers as its eigenvalues counting multiplicity. An algorithm for reconstruction for such finite Jacobi matrices is presented. A new model complementing the well known Livsic triangular model for bounded linear operators with rank one imaginary part is obt…
Let H be a separable Hilbert space, and D(B(H))^ah the anti-Hermitian bounded diagonals in some fixed orthonormal basis and K(H) the compact operators. We study the group of unitary operators U_kd = {u in U(H): such that u-e^D in K(H) for D in D(B(H))^ah} in order to obtain a concrete description of short curves in unitary Fredholm orbits Ob={ e^K b e^{-K} : K in K(H)^ah } of a compact self-adjoint operator b with spectral multiplicity one. We consider the rectifiable distance on Ob defined as the infimum of curve lengths measured with the Finsler metric defined by means of the quotient space …
A theorem of Thompson provides a non-self-adjoint variant of the classical Schur-Horn theorem by characterizing the possible diagonal values of a matrix with given singular values. We prove an analogue of Thompson's theorem for II_1 factors.
For a semibounded self-adjoint operator $ T $ and a compact self-adjoint operator $ S $ acting on a complex separable Hilbert space of infinite dimension, we study the difference $ D(λ) := E_{(-\infty, λ)}(T+S) - E_{(-\infty, λ)}(T), \, λ\in \mathbb{R} $, of the spectral projections associated with the open interval $ (-\infty, λ) $. In the case when $ S $ is of rank one, we show that $ D(λ) $ is unitarily equivalent to a block diagonal operator $ Γ_λ \oplus 0 $, where $ Γ_λ $ is a bounded self-adjoint Hankel operator, for all $ λ\in \mathbb{R} $ except for at most countably many $ λ$. If, mor…
In this work the method of analyzing of the absolutely continuous spectrum for self-adjoint operators is considered. For the analysis it is used an approximation of self-adjoint operator $A$ by a sequence of operators $A_n$ with absolutely continuous spectrum on a given interval $[a,b\,]$ which converges to $A$ in a strong sense on a dense set. The notion of equi-absolute continuity is also used. It was found a sufficient condition of absolute continuity of the operator $A$ spectrum on the finite interval $[a,b\,]$ and the condition for that the corresponding spectral density belongs to the cl…
