CuMoO4 is a triclinic quantum magnet based on S = 1/2 moments at the Cu2+ site. It has recently attracted interest due to the remarkable changes in its chromic and volumetric properties at high temperatures, and in its magnetic properties at low temperatures. This material exhibits a first order structural phase transition at T_C ~ 190 K as well as a magnetic phase transition at T_N ~ 1.75 K. We report low temperature heat capacity measurements as well as extensive elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on powder samples taken above and below T_N. We observe neutron diffraction consistent with a simple (1/2, 0, 0) antiferromagnetic structure indicating a doubling of the a-axis periodicity below T_N. In addition, inelastic neutron scattering above a spin gap of ~ 2.3 meV is consistent with triplet excitations out of paired S = 1/2 moments which form singlet dimers. Low lying spin wave excitations are also observed and these originate from ordered S = 1/2 moments below T_N. Taken together these measurements show the ground state of CuMoO4 to display both non-magnetic singlets, and ferromagnetically-coupled spins coexisting within an antiferromagnetic structure below T_N ~ 1.75 K.

We have performed X-ray diffraction experiments on a single crystalline CeCoSi to investigate the unresolved ordered phase below $T_0 \sim 12$ K. We have discovered that a triclinic lattice distortion takes place below $T_0$, which is further modified in the subsequent antiferromagnetic ordered phase. The structural domains can be selected by applying a magnetic field, indicating that some electronic ordering exists behind and affects the magnetic anisotropy in the hidden ordered phase below $T_0$. The transition at $T_0$, although the order parameter is still unknown, is associated with the m…
The layered honeycomb lattice iridate Cu$_2$IrO$_3$ is the closest realization of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid, primarily due to the enhanced interlayer separation and nearly ideal honeycomb lattice. We report pressure-induced structural evolution of Cu$_2$IrO$_3$ by powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD) up to $\sim$17 GPa and Raman scattering measurements up to $\sim$25 GPa. A structural phase transition (monoclinic $C2/c \: \rightarrow$ triclinic $P\bar{1}$) is observed with a broad mixed phase pressure range ($\sim$4 to 15 GPa). The triclinic phase consists of heavily distorted honeycomb lattic…
The quantum magnetism in a three-singlet model (TSM) with singlet crystalline electric field (CEF) states interacting on a lattice is investigated, motivated by its appearance in compounds with 4f^2 and 5f^2 electronic structure. Contrary to conventional (semi-classical) magnetism there are no preformed moments above the ordering temperature Tm. They appear spontaneously as induced or excitonic moments due to singlet-singlet mixing at Tm. In most cases the transition is of second order, however for large matrix elements between the excited states it turns into a first order transition at a cri…
Magnetic Field Effect on Crossover Temperature from Non-Fermi Liquid to Fermi Liquid Behavior in f^2-Impurity Systems with Crystalline-Electric-Field Singlet State Competing with Kondo-Yosida Singlet State
Magnetization and high-resolution x-ray diffraction measurements of the Kitaev-Heisenberg material alpha-RuCl3 reveal a pressure-induced crystallographic and magnetic phase transition at a hydrostatic pressure of p=0.2 GPa. This structural transition into a triclinic phase is characterized by a very strong dimerization of the Ru-Ru bonds, accompanied by a collapse of the magnetic susceptibility. Ab initio quantum-chemistry calculations disclose a pressure-induced enhancement of the direct 4d-4d bonding on particular Ru-Ru links, causing a sharp increase of the antiferromagnetic exchange intera…
Magnetically Robust Non-Fermi Liquid Behavior in Heavy Fermion Systems with f^2-Configuration: Competition between Crystalline-Electric-Field and Kondo-Yosida Singlets
We have investigated the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of antiferromagnetic Ising spin chain CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$ by magnetization and heat capacity measurements. Both monoclinic $α$-CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$ and triclinic $γ$-CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$ exhibit field-induced metamagnetic transition from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic state via an intermediate ferrimagnetic state with 1/3 magnetization plateau. Due to this field-induced metamagnetic transition, these systems show large conventional as well as inverse magnetocaloric effects. In $α$-CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$, we observe field-induced complex magnet…
Magnetic excitations of the recently discovered frustrated spin-1/2 two-leg ladder system Li$_2$Cu$_2$O(SO$_4$)$_2$ are investigated using inelastic neutron scattering, magnetic susceptibility and infrared absorption measurements. Despite the presence of a magnetic dimerization concomitant with the tetragonal-to-triclinic structural distortion occurring below 125 K, neutron scattering experiments reveal the presence of dispersive triplet excitations above a spin gap of $Δ= 10.6$ meV at 1.5 K, a value consistent with the estimates extracted from magnetic susceptibility. The likely detection of …
Two-dimensional layered transition-metal-dichalcogenide compound 1T-TaS2 shows the rare coexistence of charge density wave (CDW) and electron correlation driven Mott transition. In addition, atomic-cluster spins on the triangular lattice of the CDW state of 1T-TaS2 give rise to the possibility of the exotic spin-singlet state in which quantum fluctuations of spins are strong enough to prevent any long range magnetic ordering down to absolute zero ( 0 K). We present here the evidences of a glass-like random singlet magnetic state in 1T-TaS2 at low temperatures through a study of temperature and…
$γ$-triclinic and $α$-monoclinic polymorphs of CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$ are two of the few known transition metal ion based materials that display stepped $1/3$ magnetization plateaus at low temperatures. Neutron diffraction [M. Markkula et al. Phys. Rev. B 86, 134401 (2012)], x-ray dichroism [N. Hollmann et al. Phys. Rev. B 89, 201101(R) (2014)], and dielectric measurements [K. Singh et al. J. Mater. Chem. 22, 6436 (2012)] have shown a coupling between orbital, magnetic and structural orders in CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$. We apply neutron inelastic scattering to investigate this coupling by measuring the spin-…
We report the structural and magnetic properties of a quantum magnet PbCuTeO5. The triclinic structure of PbCuTeO5 comprises of alternating layers (ab-planes), in which one layer is composed of S = 1/2 dimer chains and another layer is composed of S = 1/2 trimer chains formed by corner-shared CuO4 units. Magnetic susceptibility data show a Curie-Weiss behavior with an antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature (Theta_CW) of -165 K. At low temperature, both the heat capacity Cp(T) and susceptibility data show an anomaly at Tc = 6 K with a weak ferromagnetic (WFM) moment suggesting the appearance…
We present an experimental investigation of the magnetic structure in a tetramer system SeCuO$_3$ using neutron diffraction and nuclear resonance techniques. We establish a non-collinear, commensurate antiferromagnetic ordering with a propagation vector $\textbf{k} = \left(0,0,1 \right)$. The order parameter follows a critical behavior near $T_N = 8$ K, with a critical exponent $β= 0.32$ in agreement with a 3D universality class. Evidence is presented that a singlet state starts to form on tetramers at temperatures as high as 200 K, and its signature is preserved within the ordered state throu…

Uranium compounds can manifest a wide range of fascinating many-body phenomena, and are often thought to be poised at a crossover between localized and itinerant regimes for 5f electrons. The antiferromagnetic dipnictide USb2 has been of recent interest due to the discovery of rich proximate phase diagrams and unusual quantum coherence phenomena. Here, linear-dichroic X-ray absorption and elastic neutron scattering are used to characterize electronic symmetries on uranium in USb2 and isostructural UBi2. Of these two materials, only USb2 is found to enable strong Hund's rule alignment of local …
Theoretical models of the spin-orbital liquid (SOL) FeSc$_2$S$_4$ have predicted it to be in close proximity to a quantum critical point separating a spin-orbital liquid phase from a long-range ordered magnetic phase. Here, we examine the magnetic excitations of FeSc$_2$S$_4$ through time-domain terahertz spectroscopy under an applied magnetic field. At low temperatures an excitation emerges that we attribute to a singlet-triplet excitation from the SOL ground state. A three-fold splitting of this excitation is observed as a function of applied magnetic field. As singlet-triplet excitations ar…
The development of long-range ferromagnetic (FM) order in dilute magnetic topological insulators can induce dissipationless electronic surface transport via the quantum anomalous Hall effect. We measure the magnetic excitations in a prototypical magnetic topological crystalline insulator, Sn$_{0.95}$Mn$_{0.05}$Te, using inelastic neutron scattering. Neutron diffraction and magnetization data indicate that our Sn$_{0.95}$Mn$_{0.05}$Te sample has no FM long-range order above a temperature of 2 K. However, we observe slow, collective FM fluctuations ($<$~70 $μ$eV), indicating proximity to FM orde…
We report a $^{35}$Cl nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study of the diluted Kitaev material $α$-Ru$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$Cl$_3$ ($x=0.1$ and $0.2$) where non-magnetic Ir$^{3+}$ dopants substitute Ru$^{3+}$ ions. Upon dilution, the $^{35}$Cl spectra exhibit unusual large magnetic inhomogeneity, which sets in at temperatures below the Kitaev exchange energy scale. At the same time, the $^{35}$Cl spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ as a function of dilution and magnetic field unravels a critical doping of $x_c\approx 0.22$, towards which both the field-induced spin gap and the zero-field magnetic orde…

Magnetization, specific heat, and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements are carried out to clarify the low-energy excitations for the S = 1/2 polyhedral clusters {Mo$_{72}$V$_{30}$} and {W$_{72}$V$_{30}$}. The clusters provide unique model systems of Kagomé network on a quasi-sphere. The linear field variation of magnetization at low temperatures indicates that the ground state is singlet for both clusters. The temperature and the magnetic field dependence of specific heat shows a distinct difference between two clusters with differing structural symmetries. In {W$_{72}$V$_{30}$} with I$_…
Based on a special variant of plaquette expansion, an operator is constructed whose eigenvalues give the low-energy singlet spectrum of spin-$\frac12$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on square lattice with nearest- and frustrating next-nearest-neighbor exchange couplings $J_1$ and $J_2$. It is well known that a non-magnetic phase arises in this model at $0.4\lesssim J_2/J_1\lesssim 0.6$ sandwiched by two Néel ordered phases. In agreement with previous results, we observe a first-order quantum phase transition (QPT) at $J_2\approx 0.64J_1$ from the non-magnetic phase to the Néel one. Large gap ($\gt…
Strong spin-orbital-coupling magnetic systems with the honeycomb structure can provide bond-directional interactions which may result in Kitaev quantum spin liquids and exotic anyonic excitations. However, one of the key ingredients in real materials$-$disorders$-$has been much less studied in Kitaev systems. Here we synthesized a trigonal SrIr$_2$O$_{6-δ}$ with $δ\approx 0.25$, which consists of two-dimensional honeycomb Ir planes with edge-sharing IrO$_6$ octahedra. First-principles computation and experimental measurements suggest that the electronic system is gapped, and there should be no…
Heavy fermion materials are compounds in which localized $f$-orbitals hybridize with delocalized $d$ ones, leading to quasiparticles with large renormalized masses. The presence of strongly correlated $f$-electrons at the Fermi level may also lead to long-range order, such as magnetism, or unconventional superconductivity. From a theoretical point of view, the ``standard model'' for heavy fermion compounds is the Periodic Anderson Model (PAM). Despite being extensively scrutinized, its thermodynamic properties in three-dimensional lattices have not been carefully addressed by unbiased methodol…
Recent experiments [J. Guo et al., Phys. Rev. Lett.124,206602 (2020)] on thermodynamic properties of the frustrated layered quantum magnet SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ -- the Shastry-Sutherland material -- have provided strong evidence for a low-temperature phase transition between plaquette-singlet and antiferromagnetic order as a function of pressure. Further motivated by the recently discovered unusual first-order quantum phase transition with an apparent emergent O(4) symmetry of the antiferromagnetic and plaquette-singlet order parameters in a two-dimensional "checkerboard J-Q" quantum spin model…
Dynamical correlation functions contain important physical information on correlated spin models. Here a dynamical theory suitable suitable to the isotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain in a longitudinal magnetic field is extended to anisotropy larger than one . The aim of this paper is the study of the line shape of the spin dynamical structure factor components +-, -+ and zz of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg-Ising chain in a longitudinal magnetic field near their sharp peaks. To reach that goal, the nature of the specific type of elementary magnetic configurations both unbound and associated with real…
Materials containing non-Kramers magnetic ions can show unusual quantum excitations because of the exact mapping of the two-singlet crystal-field ground state to a quantum model of Ising spins in a transverse magnetic field. Here, we model the magnetic excitation spectrum of garnet-structured Ho3Ga5O12, which has a two-singlet crystal-field ground state. We use a reaction-field approximation to explain published inelastic neutron-scattering data [Zhou et al., Phys. Rev. B 78, 140406(R) (2008)] using a three-parameter model containing the magnetic dipolar interaction, the two-singlet crystal-fi…

The singlet ground state magnetism in pyrochlore osmates Y$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ and Ho$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ is studied by DC and AC susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron powder diffraction measurements. Despite the expected non-magnetic singlet in the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) limit for Os$^{4+}$ ($5d^4$), Y$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ exhibits a spin-glass (SG) ground state below 4 K with weak magnetism, suggesting possible proximity to a quantum phase transition between the non-magnetic state in the strong SOC limit and the magnetic state in the strong superexchange limit. Ho$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ has the same …
