We prove a large deviation result for a random symmetric n x n matrix with independent identically distributed entries to have a few eigenvalues of size n. If the spectrum S survives when the matrix is rescaled by a factor of n, it can only be the eigenvalues of a Hilbert-Schmidt kernel k(x,y) on [0,1] x [0,1]. The rate function for k is $I(k)=1/2\int h(k(x,y) dxdy$ where h is the Cramer rate function for the common distribution of the entries that is assumed to have a tail decaying faster than any Gaussian. The large deviation for S is then obtained by contraction.
Random matrices have played an important role in many fields including machine learning, quantum information theory and optimization. One of the main research focuses is on the deviation inequalities for eigenvalues of random matrices. Although there are intensive studies on the large-deviation inequalities for random matrices, only a few of works discuss the small-deviation behavior of random matrices. In this paper, we present the small-deviation inequalities for the largest eigenvalues of sums of random matrices. Since the resulting inequalities are independent of the matrix dimension, they…
We establish a large deviation principle for the empirical spectral measure of a sample covariance matrix with sub-Gaussian entries, which extends Bordenave and Caputo's result for Wigner matrices having the same type of entries [7]. To this aim, we need to establish an asymptotic freeness result for rectangular free convolution, more precisely, we give a bound in the subordination formula for information-plus-noise matrices.
We present large deviations principles for the moments of the empirical spectral measure of Wigner matrices and empirical measure of $β$-ensembles in three cases : the case of Wigner matrices without Gaussian tails, that is Wigner matrices whose entries have tail distributions decreasing as $e^{-ct^α}$, for some constant $c>0$ and with $α\in (0,2)$, the case of Gaussian Wigner matrices, and the case of $β$-ensembles associated with a convex potential with polynomial growth.
The probability of the small deviations of the matrix $AA^T$ determinant is estimated, where $A$ is an $n\times\infty$ random matrix with centered entries having joint Gaussian distribution. The inequality obtained is sharp in a sence.
We establish large deviations estimates for the largest eigenvalue of Wigner matrices with sub-Gaussian entries. Under technical assumptions, we show that the large deviation behavior of the largest eigenvalue is universal for small deviations, in the sense that the speed and the rate function are the same as in the case of the GOE. In contrast, in the regime of very large deviations, we obtain a non-universal rate function and we prove that the associated eigenvector is localized given the large deviation event, thus establishing the existence of a transition between two different large devia…
We prove large deviations principles for spectral measures of perturbed (or spiked) matrix models in the direction of an eigenvector of the perturbation. In each model under study, we provide two approaches, one of which relying on large deviations principle of unperturbed models derived in the previous work "Sum rules via large deviations" (Gamboa-Nagel-Rouault, JFA, 2016).
We establish a moderate deviation principle (MDP) for the number of eigenvalues of a Wigner matrix in an interval. The proof relies on fine asymptotics of the variance of the eigenvalue counting function of GUE matrices due to Gustavsson. The extension to large families of Wigner matrices is based on the Tao and Vu Four Moment Theorem and applies localization results by Erdös, Yau and Yin. Moreover we investigate families of covariance matrices as well.
We prove a large deviation principle for the largest eigenvalue of Wigner matrices without Gaussian tails, namely such that the distribution tails $\mathbb{P}( |X_{1,1}|>t)$ and $\mathbb{P}(|X_{1,2}|>t)$ behave like $e^{-bt^α}$ and $e^{-at^α}$ respectively for some $a,b\in (0,+\infty)$ and $α\in (0,2)$. The large deviation principle is of speed $N^{α/2}$ and with a good rate function depending only on the tail distribution of the entries.
We establish a moderate deviations principle (MDP) for the log-determinant $\log | \det (M_n) |$ of a Wigner matrix $M_n$ matching four moments with either the GUE or GOE ensemble. Further we establish Cramér--type moderate deviations and Berry-Esseen bounds for the log-determinant for the GUE and GOE ensembles as well as for non-symmetric and non-Hermitian Gaussian random matrices (Ginibre ensembles), respectively.
We establish a large deviation theorem for the empirical spectral distribution of random covariance matrices whose entries are independent random variables with mean 0, variance 1 and having controlled forth moments. Some new properties of Laguerre polynomials are also given.
We give abstract versions of the large deviation theorem for the distribution of zeros of polynomials and apply them to the characteristic polynomials of Hermitian random matrices. We obtain new estimates related to the local semi-circular law for the empirical spectral distribution of these matrices when the 4th moments of their entries are controlled.
The theorem of Furstenberg and Kesten provides a strong law of large numbers for the norm of a product of random matrices. This can be extended under various assumptions, covering nonnegative as well as invertible matrices, to a law of large numbers for the norm of a vector on which the matrices act. We prove corresponding precise large deviation results, generalizing the Bahadur-Rao theorem to this situation. Therefore, we obtain a third-order Edgeworth expansion for the cumulative distribution function of the vector norm. This result in turn relies on an application of the Nagaev-Guivarch me…
In this paper, we consider the addition of two matrices in generic position, namely A + U BU * , where U is drawn under the Haar measure on the unitary or the orthogonal group. We show that, under mild conditions on the empirical spectral measures of the deterministic matrices A and B, the law of the largest eigenvalue satisfies a large deviation principle, in the scale N, with an explicit rate function involving the limit of spherical integrals. We cover in particular all the cases when A and B have no outliers.
We prove general nonlinear large deviation estimates similar to Chatterjee-Dembo's original bounds except that we do not require any second order smoothness. Our approach relies on convex analysis arguments and is valid for a broad class of distributions. Our results are then applied in three different setups. Our first application consists in the mean-field approximation of the partition function of the Ising model under an optimal assumption on the spectra of the adjacency matrices of the sequence of graphs. Next, we apply our general large deviation bound to investigate the large deviation …
Let $(g_{n})_{n\geq 1}$ be a sequence of independent identically distributed $d\times d$ real random matrices with Lyapunov exponent $γ$. For any starting point $x$ on the unit sphere in $\mathbb R^d$, we deal with the norm $ | G_n x | $, where $G_{n}:=g_{n} \ldots g_{1}$. The goal of this paper is to establish precise asymptotics for large deviation probabilities $\mathbb P(\log | G_n x | \geq n(q+l))$, where $q>γ$ is fixed and $l$ is vanishing as $n\to \infty$. We study both invertible matrices and positive matrices and give analogous results for the couple $(X_n^x,\log | G_n x |)$ with targ…
In this article, we consider random Wigner matrices, that is symmetric matrices such that the subdiagonal entries of Xn are independent, centered, and with variance one except on the diagonal where the entries have variance two. We prove that, under some suitable hypotheses on the laws of the entries, the law of the largest eigenvalue satisfies a large deviation principle with the same rate function as in the Gaussian case. The crucial assumption is that the Laplace transform of the entries must be bounded above by the Laplace transform of a centered Gaussian variable with same variance. This …
In this article we consider Wigner matrices $X_N$ with variance profiles (also called Wigner-type matrices) which are of the form $X_N(i,j) = σ(i/N,j/N) a_{i,j} / \sqrt{N}$ where $σ$ is a symmetric real positive function of $[0,1]^2$ and $σ$ will be taken either continuous or piecewise constant. We prove a large deviation principle for the largest eigenvalue of those matrices under the same condition of sharp sub-Gaussian bound and for some other assumptions on $σ$. These sub-Gaussian bounds are verified for example for Gaussian variables, Rademacher variables or uniform variables on $[- \sqrt…
We present a large deviation principle at speed N for the largest eigenvalue of some additively deformed Wigner matrices. In particular this includes Gaussian ensembles with full-rank general deformation. For the non-Gaussian ensembles, the deformation should be diagonal, and we assume that the laws of the entries have sharp sub-Gaussian Laplace transforms and satisfy certain concentration properties. For these latter ensembles we establish the large deviation principle in a restricted range $(-\infty, x_c)$, where $x_c$ depends on the deformation only and can be infinite.
Let $(g_{n})_{n\geq 1}$ be a sequence of independent and identically distributed positive random $d\times d$ matrices and consider the matrix product $G_n: = g_n \ldots g_1$. Under suitable conditions, we establish the Berry-Esseen bounds on the rate of convergence in the central limit theorem and moderate deviation expansions of Cramér type, for the matrix norm $\| G_n \|$ of $G_n$, for its $(i,j)$-th entry $G_n^{i,j}$, and the and for its spectral radius $ρ(G_n)$.
We prove a moderate deviation principle for subgraph count statistics of Erdos-Renyi random graphs. This is equivalent in showing a moderate deviation principle for the trace of a power of a Bernoulli random matrix. It is done via an estimation of the log-Laplace transform and the Gaertner-Ellis theorem. We obtain upper bounds on the upper tail probabilities of the number of occurrences of small subgraphs. The method of proof is used to show supplemental moderate deviation principles for a class of symmetric statistics, including non-degenerate U-statistics with independent or Markovian entrie…
We establish precise right-tail small deviation estimates for the largest eigenvalue of real symmetric and complex Hermitian matrices whose entries are independent random variables with uniformly bounded moments. The proof relies on a Green function comparison along a continuous interpolating matrix flow for a long time. Less precise estimates are also obtained in the left tail.
Let $U_m$ be an $m \times m$ Haar unitary matrix and $U_{[m,n]}$ be its $n \times n$ truncation. In this paper the large deviation is proven for the empirical eigenvalue density of $U_{[m,n]}$ as $m/n \to λ$ and $n \to \infty$. The rate function and the limit distribution are given explicitly. $U_{[m,n]}$ is the random matrix model of $quq$, where $u$ is a Haar unitary in a finite von Neumann algebra, $q$ is a certain projection and they are free. The limit distribution coincides with the Brown measure of the operator $quq$.
In this paper two independent and unitarily invariant projection matrices P(N) and Q(N) are considered and the large deviation is proven for the eigenvalue density of all polynomials of them as the matrix size $N$ converges to infinity. The result is formulated on the tracial state space $TS({\cal A})$ of the universal $C^*$-algebra ${\cal A}$ generated by two selfadjoint projections. The random pair $(P(N),Q(N))$ determines a random tracial state $τ_N \in TS({\cal A})$ and $τ_N$ satisfies the large deviation. The rate function is in close connection with Voiculescu's free entropy defined for …
We prove large deviation principles (LDPs) for random matrices in the orthogonal group and Stiefel manifold, determining both the speed and good convex rate functions that are explicitly given in terms of certain log-determinants of trace-class operators and are finite on the set of Hilbert-Schmidt operators $M$ satisfying $\|MM^*\|<1$. As an application of those LDPs, we determine the precise large deviation behavior of $k$-dimensional random projections of high-dimensional product distributions using an appropriate interpretation in terms of point processes, also characterizing the space of …
We establish a large-deviations principle for the largest eigenvalue of a generalized sample covariance matrix, meaning a matrix proportional to $Z^T ΓZ$, where $Z$ has i.i.d. real or complex entries and $Γ$ is not necessarily the identity. We treat the classical case when $Z$ is Gaussian and $Γ$ is positive definite, but we also cover two orthogonal extensions: Either the entries of $Z$ can instead be sharp sub-Gaussian, a class including Rademacher and uniform distributions, where we find the same rate function as for the Gaussian model; or $Γ$ can have negative eigenvalues if $Z$ remains Ga…
We study the emergence of the giant component in the random cluster model on the complete graph, which was first studied by Bollobás, Grimmett, and Janson. We give an alternative analysis using a thermodynamic/large deviations approach introduced by Biskup, Chayes, and Smith for the case of percolation. In particular, we compute the rate function for large deviations of the size of the largest connected component of the random graph for $q\geq 1$.
In this survey, we discuss some basic problems concerning random matrices with discrete distributions. Several new results, tools and conjectures will be presented.
We consider large random trees under Gibbs distributions and prove a Large Deviation Principle (LDP) for the distribution of degrees of vertices of the tree. The LDP rate function is given explicitly. An immediate consequence is a Law of Large Numbers for the distribution of vertex degrees in a large random tree. Our motivation for this study comes from the analysis of RNA secondary structures.
The main contribution of this article is an asymptotic expression for the rate associated with moderate deviations of subgraph counts in the Erdős-Rényi random graph $G(n,m)$. Our approach is based on applying Freedman's inequalities for the probability of deviations of martingales to a martingale representation of subgraph count deviations. In addition, we prove that subgraph count deviations of different subgraphs are all linked, via the deviations of two specific graphs, the path of length two and the triangle. We also deduce new bounds for the related $G(n,p)$ model.
We consider $n\times n$ Hermitian matrices with i.i.d. entries $X_{ij}$ whose tail probabilities $\mathbb {P}(|X_{ij}|\geq t)$ behave like $e^{-at^α}$ for some $a>0$ and $α\in(0,2)$. We establish a large deviation principle for the empirical spectral measure of $X/\sqrt{n}$ with speed $n^{1+α/2}$ with a good rate function $J(μ)$ that is finite only if $μ$ is of the form $μ=μ_{\mathrm{sc}}\boxplusν$ for some probability measure $ν$ on $\mathbb {R}$, where $\boxplus$ denotes the free convolution and $μ_{\mathrm{sc}}$ is Wigner's semicircle law. We obtain explicit expressions for $J(μ_{\mathrm{sc…
In this note we study the right large deviation of the top eigenvalue (or singular value) of the sum or product of two random matrices $\mathbf{A}$ and $\mathbf{B}$ as their dimensions goes to infinity. The matrices $\mathbf{A}$ and $\mathbf{B}$ are each assumed to be taken from an invariant (or bi-invariant) ensemble with a confining potential with a possible \emph{wall} beyond which no eigenvalues/singular values are allowed. The introduction of this wall puts different models in a very generic framework. In particular, the case where the wall is exactly at the right edge of the limiting spe…
Eigenvalues of Wigner matrices has been a major topic of investigation. A particularly important subclass of such random matrices is formed by the adjacency matrix of an Erdős-Rényi graph $\mathcal{G}_{n,p}$ equipped with i.i.d. edge-weights. An observable of particular interest is the largest eigenvalue. In this paper, we study the large deviations behavior of the largest eigenvalue of such matrices, a topic that has received considerable attention over the years. We focus on the case $p = \frac{d}{n}$, where most known techniques break down. So far, results were known only for $\mathcal{G}_{…
In this paper we study empirical measures which can be thought as a decoupled version of the empirical measures generated by random matrices. We prove the large deviation principle with the rate function, which is finite only on product measures and hence is non-convex. As a corollary, we derive a large deviations principle for (univariate) average empirical measures with the rate function that superficially resembles the rate function of random matrices, but may be concave.
Consider a real diagonal deterministic matrix $X_n$ of size $n$ with spectral measure converging to a compactly supported probability measure. We perturb this matrix by adding a random finite rank matrix, with delocalized eigenvectors. We show that the joint law of the extreme eigenvalues of the perturbed model satisfies a large deviation principle in the scale $n$, with a good rate function given by a variational formula. We tackle both cases when the extreme eigenvalues of $X_n$ converge to the edges of the support of the limiting measure and when we allow some eigenvalues of $X_n$, that we …
Large random matrices appear in different fields of mathematics and physics such as combinatorics, probability theory, statistics, operator theory, number theory, quantum field theory, string theory etc... In the last ten years, they attracted lots of interests, in particular due to a serie of mathematical breakthroughs allowing for instance a better understanding of local properties of their spectrum, answering universality questions, connecting these issues with growth processes etc. In this survey, we shall discuss the problem of the large deviations of the empirical measure of Gaussian ran…
Let $A$ be an isotropic, sub-gaussian $m \times n$ matrix. We prove that the process $Z_x := \|Ax\|_2 - \sqrt m \|x\|_2$ has sub-gaussian increments. Using this, we show that for any bounded set $T \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$, the deviation of $\|Ax\|_2$ around its mean is uniformly bounded by the Gaussian complexity of $T$. We also prove a local version of this theorem, which allows for unbounded sets. These theorems have various applications, some of which are reviewed in this paper. In particular, we give a new result regarding model selection in the constrained linear model.
We present an analytical technique to compute the probability of rare events in which the largest eigenvalue of a random matrix is atypically large (i.e.\ the right tail of its large deviations). The results also transfer to the left tail of the large deviations of the smallest eigenvalue. The technique improves upon past methods by not requiring the explicit law of the eigenvalues, and we apply it to a large class of random matrices that were previously out of reach. In particular, we solve an open problem related to the performance of principal components analysis on highly correlated data, …
We study sample covariance matrices of the form $W=\frac 1n C C^T$, where $C$ is a $k\times n$ matrix with i.i.d. mean zero entries. This is a generalization of so-called Wishart matrices, where the entries of $C$ are independent and identically distributed standard normal random variables. Such matrices arise in statistics as sample covariance matrices, and the high-dimensional case, when $k$ is large, arises in the analysis of DNA experiments. We investigate the large deviation properties of the largest and smallest eigenvalues of $W$ when either $k$ is fixed and $n\to \infty$, or $k_n\to \i…
We consider matrices formed by a random $N\times N$ matrix drawn from the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (or Gaussian Unitary Ensemble) plus a rank-one perturbation of strength $θ$, and focus on the largest eigenvalue, $x$, and the component, $u$, of the corresponding eigenvector in the direction associated to the rank-one perturbation. We obtain the large deviation principle governing the atypical joint fluctuations of $x$ and $u$. Interestingly, for $θ>1$, in large deviations characterized by a small value of $u$, i.e. $u<1-1/θ$, the second-largest eigenvalue pops out from the Wigner semi-circ…
We establish large deviation principles and phase transition results for both quenched and annealed settings of nearest-neighbor random walks with constant drift in random nonnegative potentials on $\mathbb Z^d$. We complement the analysis of \cite{Zer}, where a shape theorem on the Lyapunov functions and a large deviation principle in absence of the drift are achieved for the quenched setting.
We obtain a large deviations principle for the self-intersection local times for a symmetric random walk in dimension d>4. As an application, we obtain moderate deviations for random walk in random sceneries in some region of parameters.
It is known that large deviations of sums of subexponential random variables are most likely realised by deviations of a single random variable. In this article we give a detailed picture of how subexponential random variables are distributed when a large deviation of their sum is observed.
