We give an overview of low-energy Compton scattering (gamma^(*) p --> gamma p) with a real or virtual incoming photon. These processes allow the investigation of one of the fundamental properties of the nucleon, i.e. how its internal structure deforms under an applied static electromagnetic field. Our knowledge of nucleon polarisabilities and their generalization to non-zero four-momentum transfer will be reviewed, including the presently ongoing experiments and future perspectives.
During the workshop "Compton Scattering off Protons and Light Nuclei: pinning down the nucleon polarisabilities" (ECT*, Trento, Italy, 29 July -- 2 August 2013, http://www.ectstar.eu/node/98), recent developments had been reviewed in experimental and theoretical studies of real and virtual Compton scattering, static and generalized dipole scalar and spin polarisabilities of nucleons, as well as related phenomena in physics of muonic atoms. A vivid topic at the workshop was pathways towards the most precise extraction of the static polarisabilities from low-energy Compton cattering---including …
We review theoretical progress and prospects for determining the nucleon's static dipole polarisabilities from Compton scattering on few-nucleon targets, including new values; see Refs. [1-5] for details and a more thorough bibliography.
We review the recent baryon chiral perturbation theory results for the nucleon polarisabilities that describe the different regimes of nucleon Compton scattering --- real, virtual, and doubly virtual. We stress the importance of the empirical verification of the theory in the context of the calculation of the inelastic nucleon structure corrections, such as the two-photon exchange contributions. We also discuss the recently obtained constraints that relate the different regimes of nucleon Compton scattering and can provide additional information on the nucleon structure.
An analytic calculation of the differential cross section for elastic Compton scattering on the deuteron at photon energies ωin the range of 25-50 MeV is presented to next-to-next-to-leading order, i.e. to an accuracy of \sim 3%. The calculation is model-independent and performed in the low energy nuclear Effective Field Theory without dynamical pions. The iso-scalar, scalar electric and magnetic nucleon polarisabilities α_0 and β_0 enter as free parameters with a theoretical uncertainty of about 20%. Using data at $ω_{Lab}=49 MeV$ we find $α_0=8.4\pm 3.0(exp)\pm 1.7(theor)$, $β_0=8.9\pm 3.9(e…
Compton scattering provides important insight into the structure of the nucleon. For photons up to about 300 MeV, it is parameterised by six dynamical dipole polarisabilities which characterise the response of the nucleon to a monochromatic photon of fixed frequency and multipolarity. Their zero-energy limit yields the well-known static electric and magnetic dipole polarisabilities αand β, and the four dipole spin polarisabilities. Chiral Effective Field Theory (ChiEFT) describes nucleon, deuteron and 3-He Compton scattering, using consistent nuclear currents, rescattering and wave functions. …
A complete set of linearly independent observables in Compton scattering with arbitrarily polarised real photons off an arbitrarily polarised spin-1 target is introduced, for the case that the final-state polarisations are not measured. Adopted from the one widely used e.g. in deuteron photo-dissociation, it consists of 18 terms: the unpolarised cross section, the beam asymmetry, 4 target asymmetries and 12 asymmetries in which both beam and target are polarised. They are expressed by the helicity amplitudes and -- where available -- related to observables discussed by other authors. As applic…
We present an analysis of $13$ observables in Compton scattering on the proton. Cross sections, asymmetries with polarised beam and/or targets, and polarisation-transfer observables are investigated for energies up to the $Δ(1232)$ resonance to determine their sensitivity to the proton's dipole scalar and spin polarisabilities. The Chiral Effective Field Theory Compton amplitude we use is complete at N$^4$LO, $\mathcal{O(}e^2δ^4)$, for photon energies $ω\sim m_π$, and so has an accuracy of a few per cent there. At photon energies in the resonance region it is complete at NLO, $\mathcal{O}(e^2δ…
We analyse the proton Compton-scattering differential cross section for photon energies up to 325 MeV using Chiral Effective Field Theory and extract new values for the electric and magnetic polarisabilities of the proton. Our EFT treatment builds in the key physics in two different regimes: photon energies around the pion mass ("low energy") and the higher energies where the Delta(1232) resonance plays a key role. The Compton amplitude is complete at N4L0, O(e^2 delta^4), in the low-energy region, and at NLO, O(e^2 delta^0), in the resonance region. Throughout, the Delta-pole graphs are dress…
We calculate the forward unpolarised doubly-virtual Compton scattering (VVCS) off the deuteron in the framework of pionless effective field theory, up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3LO) for the longitudinal and next-to-leading order (NLO) for the transverse amplitude. The charge elastic form factor of the deuteron, obtained from the residue of the longitudinal VVCS amplitude, is used to extract the value of the single unknown two-nucleon one-photon contact coupling that enters the longitudinal amplitude at N3LO. We also study the lowest spin-independent generalised polarisabilitie…
In addition to the E2/M1 ratio of the N->$Δ$ transition, the electromagnetic polarizabilities and spin-polarizabilities are important structure constants of the nucleon which serve as sensitive tests of chiral perturbation theory and of models of the nucleon. Recently, these quantities have been investigated experimentally at MAMI (Mainz) by high-precision Compton scattering using hydrogen and deuterium targets, where for the latter the method of quasi-free scattering has been applied.
The status of Compton scattering by the nucleon at energies of the first and second resonance is summarized. In addition to a general test of dispersion theories and a precise determination of polarizabilities, the validities of four fundamental sum rules are explored. {\it Recommended} averages of experimental values for the electromagnetic polarizabilities and spin-polarizabilities of the nucleon are determined: $α_p=12.0\pm 0.6$, $β_p=1.9\mp 0.6$, $α_n= 12.5 \pm 1.7$, $β_n= 2.7 \mp 1.8$ (unit $10^{-4}$fm$^3$), $γ^{(p)}_π= -38.7 \pm 1.8$, $γ^{(n)}_π= 58.6 \pm 4.0$ (unit $10^{-4}$fm$^4$).
Study of the structure and dynamics of the nucleon has been deeply renewed with the advent of a parameterization of the partonic structure of the nucleon in terms of the Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs). Encoding the correlations between the elementary constituents of the nucleon, GPDs allow a 3-dimensional imaging of the nucleon from the dynamical link between the transverse position and the longitudinal momentum of partons. Double Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DDVCS) corresponds to the scattering from the nucleon of a virtual photon that finally generates a lepton pair, where the…
We formulate a new power-counting scheme for a chiral effective field theory of nucleons, pions, and Deltas. This extends chiral perturbation theory into the Delta-resonance region. We calculate nucleon Compton scattering up to next-to-leading order in this theory. The resultant description of existing $γ$p cross section data is very good for photon energies up to about 300 MeV. We also find reasonable numbers for the spin-independent polarizabilities $α_p$ and $β_p$.
We consider deeply virtual Compton scattering and deep inelastic scattering in presence of Regge exchanges that are part of the non-perturbative quark-nucleon amplitude. In particular we discuss contribution from the Pomeron exchange and demonstrate how it leads to Regge scaling of the Compton amplitude. Comparison with HERA data is given.
We formulate the low energy theorem for virtual Compton scattering off a nucleon and examine its consequences for generalized nucleon polarizabilites. As a result of a new, model independent definition of the low energy limit for VVCS reaction, all generalized sum rules of the nucleon have continuous limit for real photons and obtain contributions from the $t$-channel that were not included previously.
Virtual Compton scattering off the nucleon (VCS) is studied in the regime of low energy of the outgoing real photon. This regime allows one to directly access the generalized polarizabilities of the nucleon in a VCS experiment. In the derivation of the low energy theorem for VCS that exists in the literature, the low energy limit taken for virtual initial photons does not match on that for real photons, when one approaches the initial photon's mass shell. While this problem has for a long time been attributed to the non-analyticity of the Compton amplitude with respect to the photon virtuality…
Using hydrogen and deuterium targets, Compton scattering by the proton and neutron have been studied at the tagged photon beam of the MAMI (Mainz) accelerator using different experimental setups. The theoretical tools for the analysis of the experimental data have been investigated, as there are the nonsubtracted dispersion theory and the theory of quasi-free reactions on the proton and neutron bound in the deuteron. Experimental Compton scattering data are understood in the first and second resonance region with good precision. Precise electromagnetic polarizabilities and spin polarizabilitie…
We derive two new sum rules for the unpolarized doubly virtual Compton scattering process on a nucleon, which establish novel low-$Q^2$ relations involving the nucleon's generalized polarizabilities and moments of the nucleon's unpolarized structure functions $F_1(x,Q^2)$ and $F_2(x,Q^2)$. These relations facilitate the determination of some structure constants which can only be accessed in off-forward doubly virtual Compton scattering, not experimentally accessible at present. We perform an empirical determination for the proton and compare our results with a next-to-leading-order chiral pert…
I give a summary of recent results on nucleon polarizabilities, with emphasis on chiral perturbation theory. The predictive calculations of Compton scattering off the nucleon are compared to recent empirical determinations and lattice QCD calculations of the polarizabilities, thereby testing chiral perturbation theory in the single-baryon sector.
This review gives an update on virtual Compton scattering (VCS) off the nucleon, $γ^* N \to N γ$, in the low-energy regime. We recall the theoretical formalism related to the generalized polarizabilities (GPs) and model predictions for these observables. We present the GP extraction methods that are used in the experiments: the approach based on the low-energy theorem for VCS and the formalism of Dispersion Relations. We then review the experimental results, with a focus on the progress brought by recent experimental data on proton generalized polarizabilities, and we conclude by some perspect…
We review the experimental and theoretical status of elastic electron scattering and elastic low-energy photon scattering (with both real and virtual photons) from the nucleon. As a consequence of new experimental facilities and new theoretical insights, these subjects are advancing with unprecedented precision. These reactions provide many important insights into the spatial distributions and correlations of quarks in the nucleon.
It is shown that the Quark-Level Linear $σ$ Model (QLL$σ$M) leads to a prediction for the diamagnetic term of the polarizabilities of the nucleon which is in excellent agreement with the experimental data. The bare mass of the $σ$ meson is predicted to be $m_σ=666$ MeV and the two-photon width $Γ(σ\toγγ)=(2.6\pm 0.3)$ keV. It is argued that the mass predicted by the QLL$σ$M corresponds to the $γγ\toσ\to NN$ reaction, i.e. to a $t$-channel pole of the $γN\to Nγ$ reaction. Large -angle Compton scattering experiments revealing effects of the $σ$ meson in the differential cross section are discuss…
We review the current state of knowledge of the nucleon polarizabilities and of their role in nucleon Compton scattering and in hydrogen spectrum. We discuss the basic concepts, the recent lattice QCD calculations and advances in chiral effective-field theory. On the experimental side, we review the ongoing programs aimed to measure the nucleon (scalar and spin) polarizabilities via the Compton scattering processes, with real and virtual photons. A great part of the review is devoted to the general constraints based on unitarity, causality, discrete and continuous symmetries, which result in m…
Cross sections for quasi-free Compton scattering from the deuteron were measured for incident energies of 236--260 MeV at the laboratory angle -135 degrees. The recoil nucleons were detected in a liquid-scintillator array situated at 20 degrees. The measured differential cross sections were used, with the calculations of Levchuk et al., to determine the polarizabilities of the bound nucleons. For the bound proton, the extracted values were consistent with the accepted value for the free proton. Combining our results for the bound neutron with those from Rose et al., we obtain one-sigma constra…
The exclusive photoproduction off nucleon of a large invariant mass lepton pair in the backward region specified by the small Mandelstam variable $-u$ is discussed in the framework of collinear QCD factorization. The amplitude is factorized in terms of photon-to-nucleon Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs) which encode the photon content of the nucleon. Model estimates of these new non-perturbative objects are described and the corresponding cross sections calculated. The background due to the electromagnetic Bethe-Heitler process is shown to be negligible in the kinematical regime of int…
An effective field theory is used to give a model-independent description of Compton scattering at energies comparable to the pion mass. The amplitudes for scattering on the proton and the deuteron, calculated to fourth order in small momenta in chiral perturbation theory, contain four undetermined parameters that are in one-to-one correspondence with the nucleon polarizabilities. These polarizabilities are extracted from fits to data on elastic photon scattering on hydrogen and deuterium. For the proton we find: alpha_p = 12.1 +/- 1.1 +/- 0.5, beta_p = 3.4 +/- 1.1 +/- 0.1, both in units of 10…
This PhD thesis is devoted to the low-energy structure of the nucleon (proton and neutron) as seen through electromagnetic probes, e.g., electron and Compton scattering. The research presented here is based primarily on dispersion theory and chiral effective-field theory. The main motivation is the recent proton radius puzzle, which is the discrepancy between the classic proton charge radius determinations (based on electron-proton scattering and normal hydrogen spectroscopy) and the highly precise extraction based on first muonic-hydrogen experiments by the CREMA Collaboration. The precision …
Cross sections for elastic Compton scattering from the deuteron were measured over the laboratory angles 35-150 deg. Tagged photons in the laboratory energy range 84-105 MeV were scattered from liquid deuterium and detected in the large-volume Boston University NaI (BUNI) spectrometer. Using the calculations of Levchuk and L'vov, along with the measured differential cross sections, the isospin-averaged nucleon polarizabilities in the deuteron were estimated. A best-fit value of (alpha-beta) = 2.6+/-1.8 was determined, constrained by dispersion sum rules. This is markedly different from the acc…

The forward doubly-virtual Compton scattering (VVCS) off the nucleon contains a wealth of information on nucleon structure, relevant to the calculation of the two-photon-exchange effects in atomic spectroscopy and electron scattering. We report on a complete next-to-leading-order (NLO) calculation of low-energy VVCS in chiral perturbation theory ($χ$PT). Here we focus on the unpolarized VVCS amplitudes $T_1(ν, Q^2)$ and $T_2(ν, Q^2)$, and the corresponding structure functions $F_1(x, Q^2)$ and $F_2(x,Q^2)$. Our results are confronted, where possible, with "data-driven" dispersive evaluations o…
We address the question of interpolation of the virtual Compton scattering process off a polarized nucleon target between the deeply virtual regime for the initial-state photon and its near on-shell kinematics making use of the photon helicity-dependent Compton Form Factors (CFFs) as a main ingredient of the formalism. The five-fold differential cross section for the reaction with all possible polarization options for the lepton and nucleon spins is evaluated in terms of CFFs in the rest reference frame of the initial-state nucleon. We suggest a rather simple parametrization of the Compton had…
We examine the polarized doubly-virtual Compton scattering (VVCS) off the nucleon using chiral perturbation theory ($χ$PT). The polarized VVCS contains a wealth of information on the spin structure of the nucleon which is relevant to the calculation of the two-photon-exchange effects in atomic spectroscopy and electron scattering. We report on a complete next-to-leading-order (NLO) calculation of the polarized VVCS amplitudes $S_1(ν, Q^2)$ and $S_2(ν, Q^2)$, and the corresponding polarized spin structure functions $g_1(x, Q^2)$ and $g_2(x,Q^2)$. Our results for the moments of polarized structu…
We review recent developments in the theoretical investigation of the nucleon polarizabilities. We first report on the static polarizabilities as measured in real Compton scattering, comparing and interpreting the results from various theoretical approaches. In a second step, we extend the discussion to the generalized polarizabilities which can be accessed in virtual Compton scattering, showing how the information encoded in these quantities can provide a spatial interpretation of the induced polarization densities in the nucleon.
We examine elastic Compton scattering from the deuteron for photon energies ranging from zero to 100 MeV, using state-of-the-art deuteron wave functions and NN-potentials. Nucleon-nucleon rescattering between emission and absorption of the two photons is treated by Green's functions in order to ensure gauge invariance and the correct Thomson limit. With this Green's-function hybrid approach, we fulfill the low-energy theorem of deuteron Compton scattering and there is no significant dependence on the deuteron wave function used. Concerning the nucleon structure, we use Chiral Effective Field T…
Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) offer a new way to access the quark and gluon nucleon structure. We review recent progress in this domain, emphasizing the need to supplement the experimental study of deeply virtual Compton scattering by its crossed version, timelike Compton scattering. We also describe the extension of the GPD concept to three quark operators and the relevance of their nucleon to meson matrix elements, namely the transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs) which factorize in backward meson electroproduction and related processes. We discuss the main properties of the TDA…
Parity-violating elastic electron-nucleon scattering at low momentum transfer allows one to access the nucleon's weak charge, the vector coupling of the $Z$-boson to the nucleon. In the Standard Model and at tree level, the weak charge of the proton is related to the weak mixing angle and accidentally suppressed, $Q_W^{p,\,{\rm tree}}=1-4\sin^2θ_W\approx0.07$. Modern experiments aim at extracting $Q_W^p$ at $\sim1\%$ accuracy. Similarly, parity non-conservation in atoms allows to access the weak charge of atomic nuclei. We consider a novel class of radiative corrections, an exchange of two pho…
Theory and prospects of Compton scattering on nucleons and light nuclei below 500 MeV are outlined; cf. Refs. [1-3]. Invited contribution at the Workshop to Explore Physics Opportunities with Intense, Polarized Electron Beams with Energy up to 300 MeV, MIT, Cambridge (USA), 14th-16th March 2013.
The three-dimensional structure of nucleons (protons and neutrons) is embedded in so-called generalized parton distributions, which are accessible from deeply virtual Compton scattering. In this process, a high energy electron is scattered off a nucleon by exchanging a virtual photon. Then, a highly-energetic real photon is emitted from one of the quarks inside the nucleon, which carries information on the quark's transverse position and longitudinal momentum. By measuring the cross-section of deeply virtual Compton scattering, Compton form factors related to the generalized parton distributio…
Diffractive deeply virtual Compton scattering (DiDVCS) is the process $γ^*(- Q^2) + N \rightarrow ρ^0 + γ^* (Q'^2)+ N'$, where N is a nucleon or light nucleus, in the kinematical regime of large rapidity gap between the $ρ^0$ and the final photon-nucleus system, and in the generalized Bjorken regime where both photon virtualities $Q^2$ and $ Q'^2$ are large. We show that this process has the unique virtue of combining the large diffractive cross sections at high energy with the tomographic ability of deeply virtual Compton scattering to scrutinize the quark and gluon content of nucleons and li…
The electromagnetic polarizabilities of the nucleon are fundamental nucleon-structure observables that characterize its response to external electromagnetic fields. The neutron polarizabilities can be accessed from Compton-scattering data on light nuclear targets. Recent measurements of the differential cross section for Compton scattering on the deuteron below the pion-production threshold have decreased the uncertainties in the neutron polarizabilities, yet the proton polarizabilities remain known substantially more accurately. As the sensitivity of the cross section to the polarizabilities …
We report on new measurements of the electric Generalized Polarizability (GP) of the proton $α_E$ in a kinematic region where a puzzling dependence on momentum transfer has been observed, and we have found that $α_E = (5.3 \pm 0.6_{stat} \pm 1.3_{sys})~10^{-4} fm^3$ at $Q^2=0.20~(GeV/c)^2$. The new measurements, when considered along with the rest of the world data, suggest that $α_E$ can be described by either a local plateau or by an enhancement in the region $Q^2=0.20~(GeV/c)^2$ to $0.33~(GeV/c)^2$. The experiment also provides the first measurement of the Coulomb quadrupole amplitude in th…
The generalized parton distributions (GPDs) provide a new description of the complex internal structure of the nucleon in terms of its elementary constituents, the quarks and the gluons. The GPDs describe the correlation between the transverse position and the longitudinal momentum fraction of the partons in the nucleon, extending the information obtained from the measurements of the form factors and the parton distribution functions. Deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS), the electroproduction of a real photon from a single quark in the nucleon, $eN \to eNγ$, is the most straightforward ex…
We have made the first measurements of the virtual Compton scattering (VCS) process via the H$(e,e'p)γ$ exclusive reaction in the nucleon resonance region, at backward angles. Results are presented for the $W$-dependence at fixed $Q^2=1$ GeV$^2$, and for the $Q^2$-dependence at fixed $W$ near 1.5 GeV. The VCS data show resonant structures in the first and second resonance regions. The observed $Q^2$-dependence is smooth. The measured ratio of H$(e,e'p)γ$ to H$(e,e'p)π^0$ cross sections emphasizes the different sensitivity of these two reactions to the various nucleon resonances. Finally, when …
A brief discussion of the DVCS program at the Jefferson Lab 12 GeV energy upgrade is given. Emphasis is on what can be learned from using both polarized electron and polarized positron beams in conjunction with polarized nucleon targets.
