We present a theoretical model for the dynamics of an electron that gets trapped by means of decoherence and quantum interference in the central quantum dot (QD) of a semiconductor nanoring (NR) made of five QDs, between 100 K and 300 K. The electron's dynamics is described by a master equation with a Hamiltonian based on the tight-binding model, taking into account electron-LO phonon interaction (ELOPI). Based on this configuration, the probability to trap an electron with no decoherence is almost 27%. In contrast, the probability to trap an electron with decoherence is 70% at 100 K, 63% at 200 K and 58% at 300 K. Our model provides a novel method of trapping an electron at room temperature.
The nuclear spin of a phosphorus atom in silicon has been used as a quantum bit in various quantum-information experiments. It has been proposed that this nuclear-spin qubit can be efficiently controlled by an ac electric field, when embedded in a two electron dot-donor setup subject to intrinsic or artificial spin-orbit interaction. Exposing the qubit to control electric fields in that setup exposes it to electric noise as well. In this work, we describe the effect of electric noise mechanisms, such as phonons and $1/f$ charge noise, and estimate the corresponding decoherence time scales of t…
We show that the decoherence, which in the long run destroys quantum features of a system, can be used to reveal the entanglement in a two-qubit system. To this end, we consider a criterion that formally resembles the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality. In our case the local observables are set by the coupling of each qubit to the environmental noise, controlled with the dynamical decoupling method. We demonstrate that the constructed inequality is an entanglement criterion---it can only be violated by non-separable initial two-qubit states, provided that the local noises are correla…
We study theoretically the phonon-induced relaxation and decoherence of spin states of two electrons in a lateral double quantum dot in a SiGe/Si/SiGe heterostructure. We consider two types of singlet-triplet spin qubits and calculate their relaxation and decoherence times, in particular as a function of level hybridization, temperature, magnetic field, spin orbit interaction, and detuning between the quantum dots, using Bloch-Redfield theory. We show that the magnetic field gradient, which is usually applied to operate the spin qubit, may reduce the relaxation time by more than an order of ma…
Strong Coulomb interactions in two-dimensional systems, together with quantum confinement, make many-body processes particularly effective for carrier dynamics, which plays a crucial role in determining carrier lifetime, photoconductivity, and emission yield of the materials. Hereby, by using optical pump and terahertz probe spectroscopy, we have investigated the photocarrier dynamics in the PdSe2 films with different thickness. The experimental results reveal that the photocarrier relaxation consists of two components: a fast component of 2.5 ps that shows the layer-thickness independence, an…
Decoherence-assisted initialization of a resident hole spin polarization in a two-dimensional hole gas
The decoherence of quantum states defines the transition between the quantum world and classical physics. Decoherence or, analogously, quantum mechanical collapse events pose fundamental questions regarding the interpretation of quantum mechanics and are technologically relevant because they limit the coherent information processing performed by quantum computers. We have discovered that the transition regime enables a novel type of matter transport. Applying this discovery, we present nanoscale devices in which decoherence, modeled by random quantum jumps, produces fundamentally novel phenome…
Solid-state emitters are excellent candidates for developing integrated sources of single photons. Yet, phonons degrade the photon indistinguishability both through pure dephasing of the zero-phonon line and through phonon-assisted emission. Here, we study theoretically and experimentally the indistinguishability of photons emitted by a semiconductor quantum dot in a microcavity as a function of temperature. We show that a large coupling to a high quality factor cavity can simultaneously reduce the effect of both phonon-induced sources of decoherence. It first limits the effect of pure dephasi…
Single-photon emitters in solid-state systems are important building blocks for scalable quantum technologies. Recently, quantum light emitters have been discovered in the wide-gap van der Waals insulator hBN. These color centers have attracted considerable attention due to their quantum performance at elevated temperatures and wide range of transition energies. Here, we demonstrate coherent state manipulation of a single hBN color center with ultrafast laser pulses and investigate in our joint experiment-theory study the coupling between the electronic system and phonons. We demonstrate that …
We study quantum enhancement of transport in open systems in the presence of disorder and dephasing. Quantum coherence effects may significantly enhance transport in open systems even in the deep classical regime (where the decoherence rate is greater than the inter-site hopping amplitude), as long as the disorder is sufficiently strong. When the strengths of disorder and dephasing are fixed, there is an optimal opening strength at which the coherent transport enhancement is optimized. Analytic results are obtained in two simple paradigmatic tight-binding models of large systems: the linear ch…
Bosonic condensation of microcavity polaritons is accompanied by their relaxation from the ensemble of excited states into a single quantum state. The excess of energy is transferred to the crystal lattice that eventually involves heating of the structure. Creation of the condensate results in the local increase of the temperature which leads to the red shift of the exciton energy providing the mechanism for polariton self-trapping. By employing the driven-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii model we predict a new type of a stable localized solution supported by the thermally-induced self-trapping in…
We detect in real time inter-dot tunneling events in a weakly coupled two electron double quantum dot in GaAs. At finite magnetic fields, we observe two characteristic tunneling times, T_d and T_b, belonging to, respectively, a direct and a blocked (spin-flip-assisted) tunneling. The latter corresponds to lifting of a Pauli spin blockade and the tunneling times ratio eta=T_b/T_d characterizes the blockade efficiency. We find pronounced changes in the behavior of eta upon increasing the magnetic field, with eta increasing, saturating and increasing again. We explain this behavior as due to the …
We report microwave-driven photon-assisted tunneling in a suspended carbon nanotube double quantum dot. From the resonant linewidth at a temperature of 13 mK, the charge dephasing time is determined to be 280 +- 30 ps. The linewidth is independent of driving frequency, but increases with increasing temperature. The moderate temperature dependence is inconsistent with expectations from electron-phonon coupling alone, but consistent with charge noise arising in the device. The extracted level of charge noise is comparable with that expected from previous measurements of a valley-spin qubit, wher…
The choice of electrostatic gating over the conventional chemical doping for phase engineering of quantum materials is attributed to the fact that the former can reversibly tune the carrier density without affecting the system's level of disorder. However, this proposition seems to break down in field-effect transistors involving SrTiO$_3$ (STO) based two-dimensional electron gases. Such peculiar behavior is associated with the electron trapping under an external electric field. However, the microscopic nature of trapping centers remains an open question. In this paper, we investigate electric…
Photoluminescent carbon nanotubes are expected to become versatile room-temperature single-photon sources that have applications in quantum information processing. Quantum emission from carbon nanotubes is often induced by localization of excitons or exciton-exciton annihilation. Here, we modify the local energy landscape of excitons by decorating nanoscale pentacene particles onto air-suspended single-walled carbon nanotubes. Directional exciton diffusion from the undecorated region to the decorated site is demonstrated, suggesting exciton trapping induced by local dielectric screening from p…
