A robust scheme for state preparation and state trapping for the spins of two electrons in a semiconductor double quantum dot is presented. The system is modeled by two spins coupled to two independent bosonic reservoirs. Decoherence effects due to this environment are minimized by application of optimized control fields which make the target state to the ground state of the isolated driven spin system. We show that stable spin entanglement with respect to pure dephasing is possible. Specifically, we demonstrate state trapping in a maximally entangled state (Bell state) in the presence of decoherence.
The carrier-phonon interaction in semiconductor quantum dots can greatly affect the optical preparation of the excited state. For resonant excitation used in the Rabi preparation scheme, the polaron is formed accompanied by the emission of a phonon wave packet, leading to a degradation of preparation fidelity. In this paper, phonon wave packets for different coherent excitation schemes are analyzed. One example is the adiabatic rapid passage scheme relying on a chirped excitation. Here, also a phonon wave packet is emitted, but the preparation fidelity can still be approximately unity. A focus…
It is demonstrated how the exciton and the biexciton state of a quantum dot can be prepared with high fidelity on a picosecond time-scale by driving the dot with a strong laser pulse that is tuned above the exciton resonance for exciton preparation and in resonance with the exciton transition for biexciton preparation. The proposed schemes make use of the phonon-induced relaxation towards photon dressed states in optically driven quantum dots and combine the simplicity of Rabi flopping with the robustness of adiabatic rapid passage schemes. Our protocols allow for an on-demand, fast and almost…
Preparation of a specific quantum state is a required step for a variety of proposed practical uses of quantum dynamics. We report an experimental demonstration of optical quantum state preparation in a semiconductor quantum dot with electrical readout, which contrasts with earlier work based on Rabi flopping in that the method is robust with respect to variation in the optical coupling. We use adiabatic rapid passage, which is capable of inverting single dots to a specified upper level. We demonstrate that when the pulse power exceeds a threshold for inversion, the final state is independent …
A theoretical proposal for testing Bell's inequality in mesoscopic systems is presented. We show that the entanglement of two electron spins can be detected in the spin filter effect in the mesoscopic semiconductor / ferromagnetic semiconductor / semiconductor junction. The current-current correlation function is calculated by use of the quantum scattering theory and we compare it with the local hidden variable theory. We also discuss the influence of an imperfect spin filter and derive the condition to see the violation of Bell's inequality experimentally.
We propose an experiment to test Bell's inequality violation in condensed-matter physics. We show how to generate, manipulate and detect entangled states using ballistic electrons in Coulomb-coupled semiconductor quantum wires. Due to its simplicity (only five gates are required to prepare entangled states and to test Bell's inequality), the proposed semiconductor-based scheme can be implemented with currently available technology. Moreover, its basic ingredients may play a role towards large-scale quantum-information processing in solid-state devices.
We study the potential for controlled transfer of population to the biexciton state of a semiconductor quantum dot coupled with a metal nanoparticle, under the influence of an electromagnetic pulse with hyperbolic secant shape, and derive analytical solutions of the density matrix equations, for both zero and nonzero biexciton energy shift. These solutions lead to efficient transfer to the biexciton state, for various interparticle distances, including relatively small values. In certain cases, when the distance between the two particles is small, the transfer of population is strongly modifie…
The ability to entangle quantum systems is crucial for many applications in quantum technology, including quantum communication and quantum computing. Here, we propose a new, simple, and versatile setup for deterministically creating Bell and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states between photons of different frequencies in a two-step protocol. The setup consists of a quantum bit (qubit) coupled ultrastrongly to three photonic resonator modes. The only operations needed in our protocol are to put the qubit in a superposition state, and then tune its frequency in and out of resonance with sum…
For many applications of semiconductor quantum dots in quantum technology a well controlled state preparation of the quantum dot states is mandatory. Since quantum dots are embedded in the semiconductor matrix, the interaction with phonons plays often a major role in the preparation process. In this review, we discuss the influence of phonons on three basically different optical excitation schemes which can be used for the preparation of exciton, biexciton, and superposition states: a resonant excitation leading to Rabi rotations in the excitonic system, an excitation with chirped pulses explo…
We propose a compact and highly-efficient scheme for complete Bell-state analysis using two-photon absorption in a superconducting proximity region of a semiconductor avalanche photodiode. One-photon transitions to the superconducting Cooper-pair based condensate in the conduction band are forbidden, whereas two-photon transitions are allowed and are strongly enhanced by superconductivity. This Cooper-pair based two-photon absorption results in a strong detection preference of a specified entangled state. Our analysis shows high detection purity of the desired Bell state with negligible false …
Because of their weak coupling to the electromagnetic field dark excitons in semiconductor quantum dots possess extremely long lifetimes, which makes them attractive candidates for quantum information processing. On the other hand, preparation and manipulation of dark states is challenging, because commonly used optical excitation mechanisms are not applicable. We propose a new, efficient mechanism for the deterministic preparation of the dark exciton exploiting the application of a tilted magnetic field and the optical excitation with a chirped, i.e., frequency modulated, laser pulse.
We experimentally demonstrate an ultrafast method for preparing spin states of donor-bound electrons in GaAs with single laser pulses. Each polarization state of a preparation pulse has a direct mapping onto a spin state, with bijective correspondence between the Poincaré-sphere (for photon polarization) and Bloch-sphere (for spin) state representations. The preparation is governed by a stimulated Raman process and occurs orders of magnitude faster than the spontaneous emission and spin dephasing. Similar dynamics governs our ultrafast optical Kerr detection of the spin coherence, thus getting…
In semiconductor quantum dots the coupling to the environment, i.e. to phonons, plays a crucial role for optical state preparation. We analyze the phonon impact on two methods for a direct optical preparation of the dark exciton, which is enabled by a tilted magnetic field: the excitation with a chirped laser pulse and the excitation with a detuned pulse. Our study reveals that for both methods phonons either do not impede the proposed mechanism or are even useful by widening the parameter range where a dark state preparation is possible due to phonon-assisted dark exciton preparation. In view…
We propose and demonstrate the sequential initialization, optical control, and read-out of a single spin trapped in a semiconductor quantum dot. Hole spin preparation is achieved through ionization of a resonantly excited electron-hole pair. Optical control is observed as a coherent Rabi rotation between the hole and charged exciton states, which is conditional on the initial hole spin state. The spin-selective creation of the charged exciton provides a photocurrent read-out of the hole spin state.
Coherent spin states in semiconductor quantum dots offer promise as electrically controllable quantum bits (qubits) with scalable fabrication. For few-electron quantum dots made from gallium arsenide (GaAs), fluctuating nuclear spins in the host lattice are the dominant source of spin decoherence. We report a method of preparing the nuclear spin environment that suppresses the relevant component of nuclear spin fluctuations below its equilibrium value by a factor of ~ 70, extending the inhomogeneous dephasing time for the two-electron spin state beyond 1 microsecond. The nuclear state can be r…
Transferring entangled states between photon pairs is essential for quantum communication technologies. Semiconductor quantum dots are the most promising candidate for generating polarization-entangled photons deterministically. Recent improvements in photonic quality and brightness now make them suited for complex quantum optical purposes in practical devices. Here we demonstrate for the first time swapping of entangled states between two pairs of photons emitted by a single quantum dot. A joint Bell measurement heralds the successful generation of the Bell state $Ψ^+$ with a fidelity of up t…
The precise simulation of the preparation, control, and readout of a single-hole spin is investigated via hierarchical equations of motion(HEOM) approach. By ionization of a resonantly excited electron-hole pair and tunneling the conduction level electrons into electrodes, a single-hole spin qubit is initialized. SU(2) control is achieved via the combination of Larmor procession of the hole spin in Voigt geometry magnetic field and rotation about the optical axis with a geometric phase induced by a picosecond laser pulse. Read-out of the qubit is implemented through photocurrent. We compared t…
Several important proposals to use semiconductor quantum dots in quantum information technology rely on the control of the dark exciton ground states, such as dark exciton based qubits with a $μ$s life time. In this paper, we present an efficient way to occupy the dark exciton ground state by a single short laser pulse. The scheme is based on an optical excitation with a longitudinal field component featured by, e.g., radially polarized beams or certain Laguerre-Gauss or Bessel beams. Utilizing this component, we show within a configuration interaction approach that high-energy exciton states …

In this paper, we review recent theoretical proposal of using electron spins in quantum confined structures as qubits. We also present a theoretical proposal for testing Bell's inequality in nano-electronics devices. We show that the entanglement of two electron spins can be detected in the spin filter effect in the nanostructure semiconductor / ferromagnetic semiconductor / semiconductor jun…

An error-corrected quantum processor will require millions of qubits, accentuating the advantage of nanoscale devices with small footprints, such as silicon quantum dots. However, as for every device with nanoscale dimensions, disorder at the atomic level is detrimental to qubit uniformity. Here we investigate two spin qubits confined in a silicon double-quantum-dot artificial molecule. Each quantum dot has a robust shell structure and, when operated at an occupancy of 5 or 13 electrons, has single spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ valence electron in its $p$- or $d$-orbital, respectively. These higher elect…
We investigate both experimentally and theoretically a simple yet more robust and flexible alternative to Rabi oscillation-type biexciton preparation protocols traditionally used for semiconductor quantum dots. The quantum dot is excited by a strong laser pulse positively detuned from the two-photon resonance yielding an on demand initialization of the biexciton state by making use of the phonon-induced thermalization of the photon dressed states. It is shown that for excitation pulses in the picosecond range, a stable and high fidelity of up to $f_{XX}=0.98\pm 0.01$ is reached. Notably, the g…
We theoretically investigate the dynamics of two spin qubits interacting with a magnetic medium. A systematic formal framework for this qubit-magnet hybrid system is developed in terms of the steady-state properties of the magnetic medium. Focusing on the induced dissipative coupling between the spin qubits, we show how a sizable long-lived entanglement can be established via the magnetic environment, in the absence of any coherent coupling. Moreover, we demonstrate that maximally-entangled two-qubit states (Bell states) can be achieved in this scheme when complemented by proper postselection.…
The energy states in semiconductor quantum dots are discrete as in atoms, and quantum states can be coherently controlled with resonant laser pulses. Long coherence times allow the observation of Rabi-flopping of a single dipole transition in a solid state device, for which occupancy of the upper state depends sensitively on the dipole moment and the excitation laser power. We report on the robust preparation of a quantum state using an optical technique that exploits rapid adiabatic passage from the ground to an excited state through excitation with laser pulses whose frequency is swept throu…
Feshbach resonances are an invaluable tool in atomic physics, enabling precise control of interactions and the preparation of complex quantum phases of matter. Here, we theoretically analyze a solid-state analogue of a Feshbach resonance in two dimensional semiconductor heterostructures. In the presence of inter-layer electron tunneling, the scattering of excitons and electrons occupying different layers can be resonantly enhanced by tuning an applied electric field. The emergence of an inter-layer Feshbach molecule modifies the optical excitation spectrum, and can be understood in terms of Fe…
Bell's theorem sets a boundary between the classical and quantum realms, by providing a strict proof of the existence of entangled quantum states with no classical counterpart. An experimental violation of Bell's inequality demands simultaneously high fidelities in the preparation, manipulation and measurement of multipartite quantum entangled states. For this reason the Bell signal has been tagged as a single-number benchmark for the performance of quantum computing devices. Here we demonstrate deterministic, on-demand generation of two-qubit entangled states of the electron and the nuclear s…
Topological systems, such as fractional quantum Hall liquids, promise to successfully combat environmental decoherence while performing quantum computation. These highly correlated systems can support non-Abelian anyonic quasiparticles that can encode exotic entangled states. To reveal the non-local character of these encoded states we demonstrate the violation of suitable Bell inequalities. We provide an explicit recipe for the preparation, manipulation and measurement of the desired correlations for a large class of topological models. This proposal gives an operational measure of non-locali…
Using standard microfabrication techniques it is now possible to construct devices, which appear to reliably manipulate electrons one at a time. These devices have potential use as building blocks in quantum computing devices, or as a standard of electrical current derived only from a frequency and the fundamental charge. To date the error rate in semiconductor 'tuneable-barrier' pump devices, those which show most promise for high frequency operation, have not been tested in detail. We present high accuracy measurements of the current from an etched GaAs quantum dot pump, operated at zero sou…
Entanglement resources are key ingredients of future quantum technologies. If they could be efficiently integrated into a semiconductor platform a new generation of devices could be envisioned, whose quantum-mechanical functionalities are controlled via the mature semiconductor technology. Epitaxial quantum dots (QDs) embedded in diodes would embody such ideal quantum devices, but QD structural asymmetries lower dramatically the degree of entanglement of the sources and hamper severely their real exploitation in the foreseen applications. In this work, we overcome this hurdle using strain-tuna…
A major question for condensed matter physics is whether a solid-state quantum computer can ever be built. Here we discuss two different schemes for quantum information processing using semiconductor nanostructures. First, we show how optically driven coupled quantum dots can be used to prepare maximally entangled Bell and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states by varying the strength and duration of selective light pulses. The setup allows us to perform an all-optical generation of the quantum teleportation of an excitonic state in an array of coupled quantum dots. Second, we give a proposal for …
