Graphane is obtained by perfectly hydrogenating graphene. There exists an intermediate material, partially hydrogenated graphene (which we call \textit{hydrographene}), interpolating from pure graphene to pure graphane. It has various intriguing electronic and magnetic properties. We investigate a metal-insulator transition, employing a quantum-site percolation model together with a graph theoretical approach. Hydrographene is an exceptional case in which electronic properties cannot be determined solely by the density of states at the Fermi energy. Though there are plenty of zero energy state in wide range of hydrogenation density, most of them are insulating states. We also demonstrate that it shows a bulk ferromagnetic property based on the Lieb theory.
This article presents a design for the two-dimensional heterostructure (2DH) systems of graphane quantum dot array in graphane (GQD/Graphane), and silicene quantum dot array in silicane (SiQD/Silicane). A first-principles method was used to evaluate the deformation effect for magnetism as well as the electronic properties for the 2DH systems. The energy levels of quantum dot (QD) array and the band structure of its hydrogenated counterpart are coupling for both 2DH systems of C and Si. The hydrogenated part shares part of strain on QD array, however, the strain sharing effect is stronger in Si…
The theory of optical effects in hydrogenated graphene (graphane) in terahertz and infrared range is developed, including the analysis of complex conductivity, reflection coefficient for graphane on a substrate and dispersion of surface plasmon-polaritons. The calculations are based on quite simple analytical approximation of graphane band structure in the vicinity of Gamma-point and on the modified model of quantum coherence relaxation. Comparison of the obtained theoretical results with corresponding experimental data can be used both for the determination of graphane characteristics (Fermi …
We investigated thermal properties of the epoxy-based composites with a high loading fraction - up to f=45 vol.% - of the randomly oriented electrically conductive graphene fillers and electrically insulating boron nitride fillers. It was found that both types of the composites revealed a distinctive thermal percolation threshold at the loading fraction f>20 vol.%. The graphene loading required for achieving the thermal percolation was substantially higher than the loading for the electrical percolation. Graphene fillers outperformed boron nitride fillers in the thermal conductivity enhancemen…
Polyvinyl-pyrrolidone (PVP) loaded with different fractions of dispersed nano-graphene platelets (NGP) were studied by Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy in the frequency range from 1 mHz to 1 MHz. Complex permittivity and dynamic ac conductivity as a function of frequency, temperature and composition were explored. The concentration-dependent insulator-to-conductor transition was traced through dependence of the dc conductivity and the onset of the dispersive ac ac conductivity. The temperature evolution of the dielectric spectra, below and above the fractional threshold exhibits different dyn…
The thermal properties of an epoxy-based binary composites comprised of graphene and copper nanoparticles are reported. It is found that the "synergistic" filler effect, revealed as a strong enhancement of the thermal conductivity of composites with the size-dissimilar fillers, has a well-defined filler loading threshold. The thermal conductivity of composites with a moderate graphene concentration of ~15 wt% exhibits an abrupt increase as the loading of copper nanoparticles approaches ~40 wt%, followed by saturation. The effect is attributed to intercalation of spherical copper nanoparticles …
Development of the next generation thermal interface materials with high thermal conductivity is important for thermal management and packaging of electronic devices. We report on the synthesis and thermal conductivity measurements of non-curing thermal paste, i.e. grease, based on mineral oil with the mixture of graphene and few-layer graphene flakes as the fillers. It was found that graphene thermal paste exhibits a distinctive thermal percolation threshold with the thermal conductivity revealing a sublinear dependence on the filler loading. This behavior contrasts with the thermal conductiv…
An overview is given of recent advances in experimental and theoretical understanding of optical properties of ultra-thin crystal structures (graphene, phosphorene, silicene, MoS2, MoSe2 , WS2 , WSe2 , h-AlN, h-BN, fluorographene, graphane). Ultra-thin crystals are atomically-thick layered crystals that have unique properties which differ from their 3D counterpart. Because of the difficulties in the synthesis of few-atom-thick crystal structures, which are thought to be the main building blocks of future nanotechnology, reliable theoretical predictions of their electronic, vibrational and opti…
The development of cryogenic semiconductor electronics and superconducting quantum computing requires composite materials that can provide both thermal conduction and thermal insulation. We demonstrated that at cryogenic temperatures, the thermal conductivity of graphene composites can be both higher and lower than that of the reference pristine epoxy, depending on the graphene filler loading and temperature. There exists a well-defined cross-over temperature - above it, the thermal conductivity of composites increases with the addition of graphene; below it, the thermal conductivity decreases…
We review the current state of the art of graphene-enhanced thermal interface materials for the management of heat the next generation of electronics. Increased integration densities, speed, and power of electronic and optoelectronic devices require thermal interface materials with substantially higher thermal conductivity, improved reliability, and lower cost. Graphene has emerged as a promising filler material that can meet the demands of future high-speed and high-powered electronics. This review describes the use of graphene as a filler in curing and non-curing polymer matrices. Special at…
The discovery of the integer quantum Hall effect in the early eighties of the last century, with highly precise quantization values for the Hall conductance in multiples of $e^2/h$, has been the first fascinating manifestation of the topological state of matter driven by magnetic field and disorder, and related to the formation of non-dissipative current flow. In 2005, several new phenomena such as the spin Hall effect and the quantum spin Hall effect were predicted in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling and vanishing external magnetic field. More recently, the Zeeman spin Hall effect a…
