QCD lattice simulations with 2+1 flavours (when two quark flavours are mass degenerate) typically start at rather large up-down and strange quark masses and extrapolate first the strange quark mass and then the up-down quark mass to its respective physical value. Here we discuss an alternative method of tuning the quark masses, in which the singlet quark mass is kept fixed. Using group theory the possible quark mass polynomials for a Taylor expansion about the flavour symmetric line are found, first for the general 1+1+1 flavour case and then for the 2+1 flavour case. This ensures that the kaon always has mass less than the physical kaon mass. This method of tuning quark masses then enables highly constrained polynomial fits to be used in the extrapolation of hadron masses to their physical values. Numerical results for the 2+1 flavour case confirm the usefulness of this expansion and an extrapolation to the physical pion mass gives hadron mass values to within a few percent of their experimental values. Singlet quantities remain constant which allows the lattice spacing to be determined from hadron masses (without necessarily being at the physical point). Furthermore an extension of this programme to include partially quenched results is given.

Using the O(a) Symanzik improved action an estimate is given for the strange quark mass for unquenched (n_f=2) QCD. The determination is via the axial Ward identity (AWI) and includes a non-perturbative evaluation of the renormalisation constant. Numerical results have been obtained at several lattice spacings, enabling the continuum limit to be taken. Our results indicate a value for the strange quark mass (in the MS-bar scheme at a scale of 2 GeV) in the range 100 - 130 MeV. A comparison is also made with other recent lattice determinations of the strange quark mass using dynamical sea quark…
By considering a flavour expansion about the SU(3)-flavour symmetric point, we investigate how flavour-blindness constrains octet baryon matrix elements after SU(3) is broken by the mass difference between quarks. Similarly to hadron masses we find the expansions to be constrained along a mass trajectory where the singlet quark mass is held constant, which provides invaluable insight into the mechanism of flavour symmetry breaking and proves beneficial for extrapolations to the physical point. Expansions are given up to third order in the expansion parameters. Considering higher orders would g…
By considering a flavour expansion about the SU(3)-flavour symmetric point, we investigate how flavour-blindness constrains octet baryon matrix elements after SU(3) is broken by the mass difference between the strange and light quarks. We find the expansions to be highly constrained along a mass trajectory where the singlet quark mass is held constant, which proves beneficial for extrapolations of 2+1 flavour lattice data to the physical point. We investigate these effects numerically via a lattice calculation of the flavour-conserving and flavour-changing matrix elements of the vector and axi…
We report measurements of diagonal susceptibilities for the baryon number, chi_B, electrical charge, chi_Q, third component of isospin, chi_I, strangeness, chi_S, and hypercharge, chi_Y, as well as the off-diagonal chi_BQ, chi_BY, chi_BS, etc. We show that the ratios of susceptibilities in the high temperature phase are robust variables, independent of lattice spacing, and therefore give predictions for experiments. We also investigate strangeness production and flavour symmetry breaking matrix elements at finite temperature. Finally, we present evidence that in the high temperature phase of Q…
Fluctuations of conserved quantities in heavy-ion collisions have been argued to be diagnostic tools for the nature of the produced phase. These can be related to the predictions of quark number susceptibilities (QNS) from lattice QCD. Using the diagonal QNS, we extracted the Wroblewski parameter in a dynamical QCD computation. Our results on the cross correlations χ_{BQ}, χ_{BY}, χ_{BS} and χ_{QY} allow us to explore the charge and baryon number of objects that carry flavour. We present evidence that in the high temperature phase of QCD the different flavour quantum numbers are excited in lin…
Using an SU(3)-flavour symmetry breaking expansion between the strange and light quark masses, we determine how this constrains the extrapolation of baryon octet matrix elements and form factors. In particular we can construct certain combinations, which fan out from the symmetric point (when all the quark masses are degenerate) to the point where the light and strange quarks take their physical values. As a further example we consider the vector amplitude at zero momentum transfer for flavour changing currents.
We study properties of pseudoscalar flavour-singlet mesons from Wilson twisted mass lattice QCD with Nf=2+1+1 dynamical quark flavors. Results for masses are presented at three values of the lattice spacing and light quark masses corresponding to values of the pion mass from 230 MeV to 500 MeV. We briefly discuss scaling effects and the light and strange quark mass dependence of the eta mass. In addition we present an exploratory study using Osterwalder-Seiler type strange and charm valence quarks. This approach avoids some of the complications of the twisted mass heavy doublet. We present fir…
We present results for screening masses of light and strange mesons in 2+1 flavour QCD using improved (p4fat3) staggered fermions on 6x24^3 lattices. We have studied the screening masses of scalar, pseudo-scalar, vector and axial-vector mesons along the line of constant physics, determined by a pion mass ~220 MeV and a kaon mass ~500 MeV. In order to investigate the cut-off and volume dependencies we have also performed studies of the meson screening correlators in the non-interacting theory using the p4 and the standard staggered discretizations.
We study properties of the thermal transition in QCD, using anisotropic, fixed-scale lattice simulations with $N_f = 2+1$ flavours of Wilson fermion. Observables are compared for two values of the pion mass, focusing on chiral properties. Results are presented for the Polyakov loop, various susceptibilities, the chiral condensate and its susceptibility, and the onset of parity doubling in the light and strange baryonic sector.
We extend a known method to integrate out the strange quark in three flavour chiral perturbation theory to the context of an arbitrary number of flavours. As an application, we present the explicit formulae to one--loop accuracy for the heavy quark mass dependency of the low energy constants after decreasing the number of flavours by one while integrating out the heaviest quark in N--flavour chiral perturbation theory.
The ground state and first excited state masses of Omega(b) and Omega(bb) baryons are calculated in lattice QCD using dynamical 2+1 flavour gauge fields. A set of baryon operators employing different combinations of smeared quark fields was used in the framework of the variational method. Results for radial excitation energies were confirmed by carrying out a supplementary multiexponential fitting analysis. Comparison is made with quark model calculations.
The explicit breaking of chiral symmetry of the Wilson fermion action results in additive quark mass renormalization. Moreover, flavour singlet and non-singlet scalar currents acquire different renormalization constants with respect to continuum regularization schemes. This complicates keeping the renormalized strange quark mass fixed when varying the light quark mass in simulations with $N_f=2+1$ sea quark flavours. Here we present and validate our strategy within the CLS (Coordinated Lattice Simulations) effort to achieve this in simulations with non-perturbatively order-$a$ improved Wilson …
We present results on the sum of the masses of light and strange quark using improved staggered quarks. Our calculation uses 2+1 flavours of dynamical quarks. The effects of the dynamical quarks are clearly visible.
Since the strange quark has a light mass of order Lambda_QCD, fluctuations of sea s-s bar pairs may play a special role in the low-energy dynamics of QCD by inducing significantly different patterns of chiral symmetry breaking in the chiral limits N_f=2 (m_u=m_d=0, m_s physical) and N_f=3 (m_u=m_d=m_s=0). This effect of vacuum fluctuations of s-s bar pairs is related to the violation of the Zweig rule in the scalar sector, described through the two O(p^4) low-energy constants L_4 and L_6 of the three-flavour strong chiral lagrangian. In the case of significant vacuum fluctuations, three-flavou…
The SU(3) flavour symmetry breaking expansion in up, down and strange quark masses is extended from hadron masses to meson decay constants. This allows a determination of the ratio of kaon to pion decay constants in QCD. Furthermore when using partially quenched valence quarks the expansion is such that SU(2) isospin breaking effects can also be determined. It is found that the lowest order SU(3) flavour symmetry breaking expansion (or Gell-Mann-Okubo expansion) works very well. Simulations are performed for 2+1 flavours of clover fermions at four lattice spacings.
QCD lattice simulations yield hadron masses as functions of the quark masses. From the gradients of the hadron masses the sigma terms can then be determined. We consider here dynamical 2+1 flavour simulations, in which we start from a point of the flavour symmetric line and then keep the singlet or average quark mass fixed as we approach the physical point. This leads to highly constrained fits for hadron masses in a multiplet. The gradient of this path for a hadron mass then gives a relation between the light and strange sigma terms. A further relation can be found from the change in the sing…
The inclusion of physical effects from sea quarks has been one of the main advances in lattice QCD simulations over the last few years. We report on recent studies with four flavours of dynamical quarks and address some of the potential issues arising in this new setup. First results for physical observables in the light, strange and charm sectors are presented together with the status of dedicated simulations to perform the non-perturbative renormalisation in mass-independent schemes.
We present results for the light meson masses, the bare strange quark mass and preliminary non-perturbative renormalisation of B_K in 2+1 flavour domain wall QCD. The ensembles used were generated with the Iwasaki gauge action and have a volume of 16^3 x 32 with a fifth dimension size of 16 and an inverse lattice spacing of 1.6 GeV. These ensembles have u and d masses as low as one quarter of the strange quark mass. All data were generated jointly by the UKQCD and RBC collaborations on QCDOC machines.
We calculate all neutral vector two-point functions in Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) to two-loop order and use these to estimate the ratio of disconnected to connected contributions as well as contributions involving the strange quark. We extend the ratio of $-1/10$ derived earlier in two flavour ChPT at one-loop order to a large part of the higher order contributions and discuss corrections to it. Our final estimate of the ratio disconnected to connected is negative and a few % in magnitude.
We present results on the scalar strangeness and charm contents of the nucleon and of the disconnected contributions to the nucleon spin. These are obtained on two flavour non-perturbatively improved Sheikholeslami-Wilson configurations at a pseudoscalar mass of 290 MeV. We quote f_{T_s} = m_s<N|ss|N>/m_N< = 0.070(22) as our preliminary value for the strange quark fraction of the nucleon mass and a modified minimal subtraction scheme value Delta s = -0.015(10), with as yet unknown systematics, for the strangeness contribution to the spin.
Filtering algorithms for two degenerate quark flavours have advanced to the point that, in 2+1 flavour simulations, the cost of the strange quark is significant compared with the light quarks. This makes efficient filtering algorithms for single flavour actions highly desirable, in particular when considering 1+1+1 flavour simulations for QED+QCD. Here we discuss methods for filtering the RHMC algorithm that are implemented within BQCD, an open-source Fortran program for Hybrid Monte Carlo simulations.
We report on the calculation of the kaon B-parameter using two dynamical flavours of domain wall fermions. Our analysis is based on three ensembles of configurations, each consisting of about 5,000 HMC trajectories, with a lattice spacing of approximately 1.7 GeV for 16^3x32 lattices; dynamical quark masses range from approximately the strange quark mass to half of that. Both degenerate and non-degenerate quark masses are used for the kaons.
We describe a calculation of the spectrum of strange and nonstrange hadrons that simultaneously correlates the dressed-quark-core masses of meson and baryon ground- and excited-states within a single framework. The foundation for this analysis is a symmetry-preserving Dyson-Schwinger equation treatment of a vector-vector contact interaction. Our results exemplify and highlight the deep impact of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking on the hadron spectrum: an accurate description of the meson spectrum entails a similarly successful prediction of the spectrum of baryons, including those with stran…
By extending the SU(3) flavour symmetry breaking expansion from up, down and strange sea quark masses to partially quenched valence quark masses we propose a method to determine charmed quark hadron masses including possible QCD isospin breaking effects. Initial results for some open charmed pseudoscalar meson states and singly and doubly charmed baryon states are encouraging and demonstrate the potential of the procedure. Essential for the method is the determination of the scale using singlet quantities, and to this end we also give here a preliminary estimation of the recently introduced Wi…
QCD lattice simulations determine hadron masses as functions of the quark masses. From the gradients of these masses and using the Feynman-Hellmann theorem the hadron sigma terms can then be determined. We use here a novel approach of keeping the singlet quark mass constant in our simulations which upon using an SU(3) flavour symmetry breaking expansion gives highly constrained (i.e. few parameter) fits for hadron masses in a multiplet. This is a highly advantageous procedure for determining the hadron mass gradient as it avoids the use of delicate chiral perturbation theory. We illustrate the…
We present precision lattice calculations of the pseudoscalar decay constants of the charmed sector as well as determinations of the bottom quark mass and its ratio to the charm quark mass. We employ Nf=2+1+1 dynamical quark gauge configurations generated by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration, using data at three values of the lattice spacing and pion masses as low as 210 MeV. Strange and charm sea quark masses are close to their physical values.
We present a determination of the strange quark mass for two flavours (nf=2) of light dynamical quarks using the axial Ward identity. The calculations are performed on the lattice using O(a) improved Wilson fermions and include a fully non-perturbative determination of the renormalisation constant. In the continuum limit we find in the MSbar scheme at 2GeV, ms = 111(6)(4)(6)MeV using the force scale r0 = 0.467fm, where the first error is statistical, the second and third are systematic due to the fit and scale uncertainties respectively. Results are also presented for the light quark mass and …
The energy spectrum of a system containing a static quark anti-quark pair is computed for a wide range of source separations using lattice QCD with $N_\mathrm{f}=2+1$ dynamical flavours. By employing a variational method with a basis including operators resembling both the gluon string and systems of two separated static mesons, the first three energy levels are determined up to and beyond the distance where it is energetically favourable for the vacuum to screen the static sources through light- or strange-quark pair creation, enabling both these screening phenomena to be observed. The separa…
Extending the SU(3) flavour symmetry breaking expansion from up, down and strange sea quark masses to partially quenched valence quark masses allows an extrapolation to the charm quark mass. This approach leads to a determination of charmed quark hadron masses and decay constants. We describe our recent progress and give preliminary results in particular with regard to the recently discovered doubly charmed baryon by the LHCb Collaboration.
We apply spectral methods to compute the OZI-rule suppressed loop-loop correlators in the pseudoscalar meson flavour singlet channel. Using SESAM configurations (obtained with two degenerate sea quark flavours on 16x16x16x32 lattices at beta = 5.6 with standard Wilson action), we find for the first time clear evidence for mass plateau formation in the eta' channel of this theory. As a consequence, we observe a clear signal of a mass gap persistent under chiral extrapolation. This sets the stage for a more realistic two-channel approach, where partially quenched strange quarks would be included…
Dynamical 2+1 flavour lattice QCD is used to calculate the splittings between the masses of mesons and baryons containing a single static heavy quark and domain-wall light and strange quarks. Our calculations are based on the dynamical domain-wall gauge field configurations generated by the RBC and UKQCD collaborations at a spatial volume of (2.7 fm)^3 and a range of quark masses with a lightest value corresponding to a (partially-quenched) pion mass of 275 MeV. When extrapolated to the physical values of the light quark masses, the results of our calculations are generally in good agreement w…
We compute the strangeness and light-quark contributions Delta s, Delta u and Delta d to the proton spin in nf=2 lattice QCD at a pion mass of about 285 MeV and at a lattice spacing a approx 0.073 fm, using the non-perturbatively improved Sheikholeslami-Wohlert Wilson action. We carry out the renormalization of these matrix elements which involves mixing between contributions from different quark flavours. Our main result is the small negative value MSbar scheme value Delta s = -0.020(10)(4), at a scale mu = 7.4 GeV, of the strangeness contribution to the nucleon spin. The second error is an e…
We report here results on charm and strange hadron spectra. Adopting a mixed action approach, we use overlap fermions for valence quarks, on a background of 2+1+1 flavours HISQ gauge configurations of MILC collaboration. Two lattice spacings (0.09 fm and 0.06 fm) are used. We find the hyperfine splitting of 1S charmonia to be 114(3)(-2) MeV and 109(4)(-3) MeV, and the splitting (m(Omega_ccc)-3/2 m(JΨ)) is found to be 110(20)(-10) MeV and 120(10) MeV, corresponding to lattices with spacings a = 0.09 and 0.06 fm respectively. We also look at the ratio of the leptonic decay constant f_Ds*/f_Ds.
We compute the full non-perturbative ghost and gluon two-point Green functions by using gauge field configurations with $\nf=2$ and $\nf=2+1+1$ twisted-mass quark flavours. We use simulations with several different light quark masses, heavy quark masses close to that of the strange and charm quarks, and lightest pseudoscalar masses ranging from 270 to 510 [MeV]. Quark flavour effects on both the gluon and the ghost propagators are then investigated in a wide range of momenta, bridging the deep infrared and intermediate momenta domain of QCD interactions in the presence of dynamical quarks. The…
We present a study of charm physics using RBC/UKQCD 2+1 flavour physical point domain wall fermion ensembles for the light quarks as well as for the valence charm quark. After a brief motivation of domain wall fermions as a suitable heavy quark discretisation we will show first results for masses and matrix elements.
The presence of strange sea quark pairs may have a significant impact of the pattern of chiral symmetry breaking : in particular large differences can occur between the chiral limits of two and three massless flavours (i.e., whether $m_s$ is kept at its physical value or sent to zero). We recall some indications of such a scenario in QCD, in relation with the peculiar dynamics of the scalar sector. We explain how this could affect the convergence of three-flavour chiral series, commonly used to extrapolate the results of lattice simulations. Finally, we indicate how lattice simulations with th…
We determine the strangeness and light quark fractions of the nucleon mass by computing the quark line connected and disconnected contributions to the matrix elements m_q <N|qbar q|N> in lattice QCD, using the non-perturbatively improved Sheikholeslami-Wohlert Wilson Fermionic action. We simulate n_F=2 mass degenerate sea quarks with a pion mass of about 285 MeV and a lattice spacing a approx 0.073 fm. The renormalization of the matrix elements involves mixing between contributions from different quark flavours. The pion-nucleon sigma-term is extrapolated to physical quark masses exploiting th…
We investigate the behaviour of the pion decay constant and the pion mass in two-flavour lattice QCD, with the physical and chiral points as ultimate goal. Measurements come from the ensembles generated by the CLS initiative using the O(a)-improved Wilson formulation, with lattice spacing down to about 0.05 fermi and pion masses as low as 190 MeV. The applicability of SU(2) chiral perturbation theory is investigated, and various functional forms, and their range of validity, are compared. The physical scale is set through the kaon decay constant, whose measurement is enabled by inserting a thi…
QCD lattice simulations with 2+1 flavours typically start at rather large up-down and strange quark masses and extrapolate first the strange quark mass to its physical value and then the up-down quark mass. An alternative method of tuning the quark masses is discussed here in which the singlet quark mass is kept fixed, which ensures that the kaon always has mass less than the physical kaon mass. It can also take into account the different renormalisations (for singlet and non-singlet quark masses) occurring for non-chirally invariant lattice fermions and so allows a smooth extrapolation to the…
Using an SU(3) flavour symmetry breaking expansion in the quark mass, we determine the QCD component of the nucleon, Sigma and Xi mass splittings of the baryon octet due to up-down (and strange) quark mass differences in terms of the kaon mass splitting. Provided the average quark mass is kept constant, the expansion coefficients in our procedure can be determined from computationally cheaper simulations with mass degenerate sea quarks and partially quenched valence quarks. Both the linear and quadratic terms in the SU(3) flavour symmetry breaking expansion are considered; it is found that the…
It has become increasingly important to include one or more individual flavours of dynamical fermion in lattice QCD simulations. This is due in part to the advent of QCD+QED calculations, where isospin symmetry breaking means that the up, down, and strange quarks must be treated separately. These single-flavour pseudofermions are typically implemented as rational approximations to the inverse of the fermion matrix, using the technique known as Rational Hybrid Monte Carlo (RHMC). Over the years, a wide range of methods have been developed for accelerating simulations of two degenerate flavours …
We present results for correlators and spectral functions of open charm mesons using 2+1 flavours of clover fermions on anisotropic lattices. The D mesons are found to dissociate close to the deconfinement crossover temperature Tc. Our preliminary results suggest a shift in the thermal D meson mass below Tc. Mesons containing strange quarks exhibit smaller thermal modifications than those containing light quarks.
Lattice QCD with 2 light staggered quark flavours is being simulated on a $16^3\times8$ lattice to study the transition from hadronic matter to a quark gluon plasma. We have completed runs at $m_q=0.0125$ and are extending this to $m_q=0.00625$. We also examine the addition of a non-dynamical "strange" quark. Thermodynamic order parameters are being measured across the transition and further into the plasma phase, as are various screening lengths. No evidence for a first order transition is seen, and we estimate the transition temperature to be $TY_c=143(7) MeV$.
The numerical simulation of domain wall quarks with the two-step multi-boson (TSMB) algorithm is considered. The inclusion of single quark flavours, as required for strange quarks, is discussed. The usage of computer memory can be kept relatively low, independently of the order of polynomial approximations. Tests are performed with two flavours (N_f=2) of degenerate quarks near the N_t=4 thermodynamical cross over.
Quark line disconnected matrix elements of an operator, such as the axial current, are difficult to compute on the lattice. The standard method uses a stochastic estimator of the operator, which is generally very noisy. We discuss and develop further our alternative approach using the Feynman-Hellmann theorem which involves only evaluating two-point correlation functions. This is applied to computing the contribution of the quark spin to the nucleon and in particular for the strange quark. In this process we also pay particular attention to the development of an SU(3) flavour breaking expansio…
We present results for light meson masses and psedoscalar meson decay constants in 2+1 flavour domain wall QCD with the DBW2 and Iwasaki gauge actions, using lattices with linear sizes in the range 1.6 to 2.2fm and $u$ and $d$ quark masses as low as one quarter of the strange quark mass. All data were generated on the QCDOC machines at the University of Edinburgh and Brookhaven National Laboratory. Despite large residual masses and a limited number of sea quark mass values with which to perform chiral extrapolations, our results agree with experiment and scale within errors.
We describe a new technique to determine the contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon coming from the hadronic vacuum polarization using lattice QCD. Our method reconstructs the Adler function, using Padé approximants, from its derivatives at $q^2=0$ obtained simply and accurately from time-moments of the vector current-current correlator at zero spatial momentum. We test the method using strange quark correlators on large-volume gluon field configurations that include the effect of up and down (at physical masses), strange and charm quarks in the sea at multiple values of the…
We investigate the masses and decay constants of eta and eta' mesons using the Wilson twisted mass formulation with N_f=2+1+1 dynamical quark flavours based on gauge configurations of ETMC. We show how to efficiently subtract excited state contributions to the relevant correlation functions and estimate in particular the eta' mass with improved precision. After investigating the strange quark mass dependence and the continuum and chiral extrapolations, we present our results for masses and mixing angle(s) at the physical point. Using chiral perturbation theory we also extract the decay constan…
QCD results are presented for a 2+1 flavour fermion clover action (which we call the SLiNC action). A method of tuning the quark masses to their physical values is discussed. In this method the singlet quark mass is kept fixed, which solves the problem of different renormalisations (for singlet and non-singlet quark masses) occuring for non-chirally invariant lattice fermions. This procedure enables a wide range of quark masses to be probed, including the case with a heavy up-down quark mass and light strange quark mass. Preliminary results show the correct splittings for the baryon (octet and…
We determine the quark contributions to the nucleon spin Delta s, Delta u and Delta d as well as their contributions to the nucleon mass, the sigma-terms. This is done by computing both, the quark line connected and disconnected contributions to the respective matrix elements, using the non-perturbatively improved Sheikholeslami-Wohlert Wilson Fermionic action. We simulate n_F=2 mass degenerate sea quarks with a pion mass of about 285 MeV and a lattice spacing a = 0.073 fm. The renormalization of the matrix elements involves mixing between contributions from different quark flavours. The pion-…
We report on our ongoing project to determine the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarisation contribution to the muon $g-2$, using ensembles with $N_f=2+1$ flavours of O($a$) improved Wilson quarks generated by the CLS effort, with pion masses down to the physical value. We employ O($a$) improved versions of the local and conserved vector currents to compute the contributions of the light, strange and charm quarks to $(g-2)_μ$, using the time-momentum representation. We perform a detailed investigation of the systematic effects arising from constraining the long-distance regime of the vector c…
We present an ongoing project aimed at determining the thermodynamic Equation of State (EoS) of quark--gluon matter from lattice QCD with two generations of dynamical quarks. We employ the Wilson twisted mass implementation for the fermionic fields and the improved Iwasaki gauge action. Relying on $T=0$ data obtained by the ETM Collaboration the strange and charm quark masses are fixed at their physical values, while the pion mass takes four values in the range from 470 MeV down to 210 MeV. The temperature is varied within a fixed--lattice scale approach. The values for the pseudocritical temp…
We conclude our investigation on the QCD equation of state (EoS) with 2+1 staggered flavors and one-link stout improvement. We extend our previous study [JHEP 0601:089 (2006)] by choosing even finer lattices. These new results [for details see arXiv:1007.2580] support our earlier findings. Lattices with N_t=6,8 and 10 are used, and the continuum limit is approached by checking the results at N_t=12. A Symanzik improved gauge and a stout-link improved staggered fermion action is taken; the light and strange quark masses are set to their physical values. Various observables are calculated in the…
We simulate two variants of quenched twisted mass QCD (tmQCD), with degenerate Wilson quarks of masses equal to or heavier than half the strange quark mass. We use Ward identities in order to measure the twist angles of the theory and thus check the quality of the tuning of mass parameters to a physics condition which stays constant as the lattice spacing is varied. Flavour symmetry breaking in tmQCD is studied in a framework of two fully twisted and two standard Wilson quark flavours, tuned to be degenerate in the continuum. Comparing pseudoscalar masses, obtained from connected quark diagram…
We report on recent results of the QCDSF/UKQCD Collaboration on investigations of baryon structure using configurations generated with N_f=2+1 dynamical flavours of O(a) improved Wilson fermions. With the strange quark mass as an additional dynamical degree of freedom in our simulations we avoid the need for a partially quenched approximation when investigating the properties of particles containing a strange quark, e.g. the hyperons. In particular, we will focus on the nucleon and hyperon axial charges and quark momentum fractions.
We determine the ground state and first excited state masses of singly and doubly charmed spin 1/2 and 3/2 baryons with positive and negative parity. Configurations with $N_f=2+1$ non-perturbatively improved Wilson-clover fermions were employed, with the same quark action also being used for the valence quarks, including the charm. The spectrum is calculated for pion masses in the range $M_π\sim 259-460$ MeV at a lattice spacing $a\sim 0.075$ fm. Finite volume effects are studied comparing lattices with two different linear spatial extents ($1.8\,{\rm fm}$ and $2.4\,{\rm fm}$). The physical po…
We present the final analysis of the light and strange hadron spectra from a full QCD lattice simulation with two degenerate dynamical sea quark flavours at $β= 5.6$ on a $16^3 \times 32$ lattice. Four sets of sea quark masses corresponding to the range $.69 \leq m_π/m_ρ\leq .83$ are investigated. For reference we also ran a quenched simulation at $β_{\sf eff} = 6.0$, which is the point of equal lattice spacing, $a_ρ^{-1}$. In the light sector, we find the chiral extrapolation to physical u- and d- masses to present a major source of uncertainty, comparable to the expected size of unquenching …
