QCD lattice simulations with 2+1 flavours typically start at rather large up-down and strange quark masses and extrapolate first the strange quark mass to its physical value and then the up-down quark mass. An alternative method of tuning the quark masses is discussed here in which the singlet quark mass is kept fixed, which ensures that the kaon always has mass less than the physical kaon mass. It can also take into account the different renormalisations (for singlet and non-singlet quark masses) occurring for non-chirally invariant lattice fermions and so allows a smooth extrapolation to the physical quark masses. This procedure enables a wide range of quark masses to be probed, including the case with a heavy up-down quark mass and light strange quark mass. Results show the correct order for the baryon octet and decuplet spectrum and an extrapolation to the physical pion mass gives mass values to within a few percent of their experimental values.
From an analysis of recent ($I=J=1$)-$ππ$-phase-shift and pseudoscalar-meson decay-constant lattice data on two distinct chiral trajectories, where either the sum of the up, down and strange quark masses, or the mass of the strange quark is kept fixed, we extract the light and strange quark mass dependence of the rho meson parameters, and make predictions of those on chiral trajectories which involve lighter masses than the physical strange quark mass. We find that the mass of the rho meson can get as light as $700$ MeV for strange quark mass zero at physical pion masses. While the ratio of th…
Recent lattice data on $ππ$-scattering phase shifts in the vector-isovector channel, pseudoscalar meson masses and decay constants for strange-quark masses smaller or equal to the physical value allow us to study the strangeness dependence of these observables for the first time. We perform a global analysis on two kind of lattice trajectories depending on whether the sum of quark masses or the strange-quark mass is kept fixed to the physical point. The quark mass dependence of these observables is extracted from unitarized coupled-channel one-loop Chiral Perturbation Theory. This analysis gui…
We determine the strange and light quark condensates in full lattice QCD for the first time. This is done by direct calculation of the expectation value of the trace of the quark propagator followed by subtraction of the appropriate perturbative contribution to convert to a value for the condensate in the MS-bar scheme at 2 GeV. We use lattice QCD configurations including u, d, s and c quarks in the sea with u/d quark masses going down to the physical value. We find the ratio of the strange to the light quark condensate to be 1.08(16).
We calculate the strange quark content of the nucleon in 2+1-flavor lattice QCD. Chirally symmetric overlap fermion formulation is used to avoid the contamination from up and down quark contents due to an operator mixing between strange and light scalar operators, \bar{s}s and \bar{u}u+\bar{d}d. At a lattice spacing a=0.112(1) fm, we perform calculations at four values of degenerate up and down quark masses, which cover a range of the pion mass M_pi \simeq 300-540 MeV. We employ two different methods: one is a direct method where we calculate the strange quark content by directly inserting the…
We investigate the transverse quark spin densities of the nucleon with the lowest moment within the framework of the SU(3) chiral quark-soliton model, emphasizing the strange quark spin density. Based on previous results of the vector and tensor form factors, we are able to determine the impact-parameter dependent probability densities of transversely polarized quarks in an unpolarized nucleon as well as those of unpolarized quarks in a transversely polarized nucleon. We find that the present numerical results for the transverse spin densities of the up and down quarks are in good agreement wi…
We study the sigma term and the strange quark content of nucleon in 2+1-flavor QCD with dynamical overlap fermions. We analyze the lattice data of nucleon mass taken at two different strange quark masses with five values of up and down quark masses each. Using the reweighting technique, we study the strange quark mass dependence of the nucleon and extract the strange quark content.
The helicity-dependent strange quark distribution in the proton, $Δs$, is calculated in a nonlocal chiral SU(3) effective field theory. The hadronic proton to meson plus octet or decuplet baryon splitting functions are derived at the one-loop level, with loop integrals rendered finite by correlation functions introduced in the nonlocal Lagrangian. Within the convolution framework, the proton strange helicity distribution is obtained using spin-flavor symmetry to constrain the input valence quark distributions in the hadronic intermediate states. The polarized strange quark distribution is foun…
We study the light quark mass dependence of the f_0(600), kappa(800), rho(770) and K*(892) resonance parameters generated from elastic meson-meson scattering using unitarized one-loop Chiral Perturbation Theory. First, we show that it is possible to fit simultaneously all experimental scattering data up to 0.8-1 GeV together with lattice results on decay constants and scattering lengths up to a pion mass of 400 MeV, using chiral parameters compatible with existing determinations. Then, the strange and non-strange quark masses are varied from the chiral limit up to values of interest for lattic…
We calculate the nucleon strange quark content directly from disconnected three-point functions. Numerical simulations are carried out in two-flavor QCD using the overlap quark action with up and down quark masses down to a fifth of the physical strange quark mass. To improve the statistical accuracy, we calculate the nucleon two-point functions with the low-mode averaging technique, whereas the all-to-all quark propagator is used for the disconnected quark loop. We obtain the y parameter, which is the ratio of the strange and light quark contents, y = 0.024(45) at the physical point. This is …
We demonstrate that a nonzero strangeness contribution to the spacelike electromagnetic form factor of the nucleon is evidence for a strange-antistrange asymmetry in the nucleon's light-front wave function, thus implying different nonperturbative contributions to the strange and antistrange quark distribution functions. A recent lattice QCD calculation of the nucleon strange quark form factor predicts that the strange quark distribution is more centralized in coordinate space than the antistrange quark distribution, and thus the strange quark distribution is more spread out in light-front mome…
Quark mass reweighting can be used to tune the mass of dynamical quarks. The basic idea is to use gauge field ensembles generated at some bare mass parameters to evaluate observables at different bare sea quark masses. This involves the computation of so called reweighing factors which are given as ratios of fermion determinants. In the case of simulations including the strange quark, reweighting can be used to improve the approach towards physical quark masses. Optimal reweighting strategies combine a change of the strange quark mass with a change of the light quark masses in order to minimiz…
Various suggestions exist for incorporating the strange quark into twisted mass QCD. One option for quenched simulations is to employ two twisted doublets, (u,d) and (c,s), with separate twist angles. Working in the isospin limit, preliminary results for the quenched spectrum of strange hadrons are presented, with both twist angles tuned to pi/2. Splittings within the mass multiplets provide some insight into the symmetry breaking effects of twisted mass lattice QCD.
We determine f_K for lattice QCD in the two flavor approximation with non-perturbatively improved Wilson fermions. The result is used to set the scale for dimensionful quantities in CLS/ALPHA simulations. To control its dependence on the light quark mass, two different strategies for the chiral extrapolation are applied. Combining f_K and the bare strange quark mass with non-perturbative renormalization factors and step scaling functions computed in the Schroedinger Functional, we determine the RGI strange quark mass and the Lambda parameter in units of f_K.
We present preliminary results for the strange leading-order hadronic contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon using RBC/UKQCD physical point domain wall fermions ensembles. We discuss various analysis strategies in order to constrain the systematic uncertainty in the final result.
