The Ehrhart ring of the edge polytope $\mathcal{P}_G$ for a connected simple graph $G$ is known to coincide with the edge ring of the same graph if $G$ satisfies the odd cycle condition. This paper gives for a graph which does not satisfy the condition, a generating set of the defining ideal of the Ehrhart ring of the edge polytope, described by combinatorial information of the graph. From this result, two factoring properties of the Ehrhart series are obtained; the first one factors out bipartite biconnected components, and the second one factors out a even cycle which shares only one edge with other part of the graph. As an application of the factoring properties, the root distribution of Ehrhart polynomials for bipartite polygon trees is determined.
We use the ordinary Euler operator to compute the Ehrhart series for an arbitrary lattice polytope. The resulting formula involves the coefficients of the Ehrhart polynomial, combined via Eulerian numbers. We use this to compute $h^*_{d-1}$ in terms of the coefficients of the Ehrhart polynomial, resulting in a new linear inequality satisfied by the coefficents of the Ehrhart polynomial.
An interesting open problem in Ehrhart theory is to classify those lattice polytopes having a unimodal $h^*$-vector. Although various sufficient conditions have been found, necessary conditions remain a challenge. In this paper, we consider integrally closed reflexive simplices and discuss an operation that preserves reflexivity, integral closure, and unimodality of the $h^*$-vector, providing one explanation for why unimodality occurs in this setting. We also discuss the failure of proving unimodality in this setting using weak Lefschetz elements.
We introduce the definition of an Ehrhart limit, that is, a formal power series with integer coefficients that is the limit in the ring of formal power series of a sequence of Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomials. We identify a variety of examples of sequences of polytopes that yield Ehrhart limits, with a focus on reflexive polytopes and simplices.
In the present paper, we introduce a multibasic extension of the Ehrhart theory. We give a multibasic extension of Ehrhart polynomials and Ehrhart series. We also show that an analogue of Ehrhart reciprocity holds for multibasic Ehrhart polynomials.
We provide a formula for the Ehrhart polynomial of the connected matroid of size $n$ and rank $k$ with the least number of bases, also known as a minimal matroid. We prove that their polytopes are Ehrhart positive and $h^*$-real-rooted (and hence unimodal). We prove that the operation of circuit-hyperplane relaxation relates minimal matroids and matroid polytopes subdivisions, and also preserves Ehrhart positivity. We state two conjectures: that indeed all matroids are $h^*$-real-rooted, and that the coefficients of the Ehrhart polynomial of a connected matroid of fixed rank and cardinality ar…
The fractional stable set polytope ${\rm FRAC}(G)$ of a simple graph $G$ with $d$ vertices is a rational polytope that is the set of nonnegative vectors $(x_1,\ldots,x_d)$ satisfying $x_i+x_j\le 1$ for every edge $(i,j)$ of $G$. In this paper we show that (i) The $δ$-vector of a lattice polytope $2 {\rm FRAC}(G)$ is alternatingly increasing; (ii) The Ehrhart ring of ${\rm FRAC}(G)$ is Gorenstein; (iii) The coefficients of the numerator of the Ehrhart series of ${\rm FRAC}(G)$ are symmetric, unimodal and computed by the $δ$-vector of $2 {\rm FRAC}(G)$.
In Ehrhart theory, the $h^*$-vector of a rational polytope often provide insights into properties of the polytope that may be otherwise obscured. As an example, the Birkhoff polytope, also known as the polytope of real doubly-stochastic matrices, has a unimodal $h^*$-vector, but when even small modifications are made to the polytope, the same property can be very difficult to prove. In this paper, we examine the $h^*$-vectors of a class of polytopes containing real doubly-stochastic symmetric matrices.
It is known that the normalized volume of standard hypersimplices (defined as some slices of the unit hypercube) are the Eulerian numbers. More generally, a recent conjecture of Stanley relates the Ehrhart series of hypersimplices with descents and excedences in permutations. This conjecture was proved by Nan Li, who also gave a generalization to colored permutations. In this article, we give another generalization to colored permutations, using the flag statistics introduced by Foata and Han. We obtain in particular a new proof of Stanley's conjecture, and some combinatorial identities relati…
We express the generating function for lattice points in a rational polyhedral cone with a simplicial subdivision in terms of multivariate analogues of the h-polynomials of the subdivision and "local contributions" of the links of its nonunimodular faces. We also compute new examples of nonunimodal h^*-vectors of reflexive polytopes.
For every positive integer $n$, consider the linear operator $\U_{n}$ on polynomials of degree at most $d$ with integer coefficients defined as follows: if we write $\frac{h(t)}{(1 - t)^{d + 1}} = \sum_{m \geq 0} g(m) t^{m}$, for some polynomial $g(m)$ with rational coefficients, then $\frac{\U_{n}h(t)}{(1- t)^{d + 1}} = \sum_{m \geq 0} g(nm) t^{m}$. We show that there exists a positive integer $n_{d}$, depending only on $d$, such that if $h(t)$ is a polynomial of degree at most $d$ with nonnegative integer coefficients and $h(0) \geq 1$, then for $n \geq n_{d}$, $\U_{n}h(t)$ has simple, real,…
We describe several experimental results obtained in four candidates social choice elections. These include the Condorcet and Borda paradoxes, as well as the Condorcet efficiency of plurality voting with runoff. The computations are done by Normaliz. It finds precise probabilities as volumes of polytopes and counting functions encoded as Ehrhart series of polytopes.
We present lower bounds for the coefficients of Ehrhart polynomials of convex lattice polytopes in terms of their volume. Concerning the coefficients of the Ehrhart series of a lattice polytope we show that Hibi's lower bound is not true for lattice polytopes without interior lattice points. The counterexample is based on a formula of the Ehrhart series of the join of two lattice polytope. We also present a formula for calculating the Ehrhart series of integral dilates of a polytope.
We describe an algorithm for the computation of generalized (or weighted) Ehrhart series based on Stanley decompositions as implemented in the offspring NmzIntegrate of Normaliz. The algorithmic approach includes elementary proofs of the basic results. we illustrate the computations by examples from combinatorial voting theory.
We use machine learning to predict the dimension of a lattice polytope directly from its Ehrhart series. This is highly effective, achieving almost 100% accuracy. We also use machine learning to recover the volume of a lattice polytope from its Ehrhart series, and to recover the dimension, volume, and quasi-period of a rational polytope from its Ehrhart series. In each case we achieve very high accuracy, and we propose mathematical explanations for why this should be so.
We study a natural set of refinements of the Ehrhart series of a closed polytope, first considered by Chapoton. We compute the refined series in full generality for a simplex of dimension d, a cross-polytope of dimension d, respectively a hypercube of dimension d<4, using commutative algebra. We deduce summation formulae for products of q-integers with different arguments, generalizing a classical identity due to MacMahon and Carlitz. We also present a characterisation of a certain refined Eulerian polynomial in algebraic terms.
Hibi showed that the polynomial in the numerator of the Ehrhart series of a reflexive polytope is palindromic. We proved that those in the numerator of the Ehrhart series of every graph polytope (defined later) of the bipartite graph is palindromic. From this, one of the conjectures (raised in the A205497 of OEIS \cite{[O]}) follows immediately.

A result of Haglund implies that the $(q,t)$-bigraded Hilbert series of the space of diagonal harmonics is a $(q,t)$-Ehrhart function of the flow polytope of a complete graph with netflow vector $(-n, 1, \dots, 1)$. We study the $(q,t)$-Ehrhart functions of flow polytopes of threshold graphs with arbitrary netflow vectors. Our results generalize previously known specializations of the mentioned bigraded Hilbert series at $t=1$, $0$, and $q^{-1}$. As a corollary to our results, we obtain a proof of a conjecture of Armstrong, Garsia, Haglund, Rhoades and Sagan about the $(q, q^{-1})$-Ehrhart fun…
In this paper, we give a criterion of the nearly Gorenstein property of the Ehrhart ring of the stable set polytope of an h-perfect graph: the Ehrhart ring of the stable set polytope of an h-perfect graph $G$ with connected components $G^{(1)}, \ldots, G^{(\ell)}$ is nearly Gorenstein if and only if (1) for each $i$, the Ehrhart ring of the stable set polytope of $G^{(i)}$ is Gorenstein and (2) $|ω(G^{(i)})-ω(G^{(j)})|\leq 1$ for any $i$ and $j$, where $ω(G^{(i)})$ is the clique number of $G^{(i)}$. We also show that the Segre product of Cohen-Macaulay graded rings with linear non-zerodivisor …
Recently several authors have proved results on Ehrhart series of free sums of rational polytopes. In this note we treat these results from an algebraic viewpoint. Instead of attacking combinatorial statements directly, we derive them from structural results on affine monoids and their algebras that allow conclusions for Hilbert and Ehrhart series. We characterize when a binomial regular sequence generates a prime ideal or even normality is preserved for the residue class ring.
We use a polynomial decomposition result by Stapledon to show that the numerator polynomial of the Ehrhart series of an open polytope is the difference of two symmetric polynomials with nonnegative integer coefficients. We obtain a related decomposition for order polytopes and for the numerator polynomial of the corresponding series for chromatic polynomials. The nonnegativity of the coefficients in such decompositions provide inequalities satisfied by the coefficients of chromatic polynomials for any simple graph.
This is the first one of a series of papers on association of orientations, lattice polytopes, and abelian group arrangements to graphs. The purpose is to interpret the integral and modular tension polynomials of graphs at zero and negative integers. The whole exposition is put under the framework of subgroup arrangements and the application of Ehrhart polynomials. Such viewpoint leads to the following main results of the paper: (i) the reciprocity law for integral tension polynomials; (ii) the reciprocity law for modular tension polynomials; and (iii) a new interpretation for the value of the…
In 1966 Gallai asked whether all longest paths in a connected graph have nonempty intersection. This is not true in general and various counterexamples have been found. However, the answer to Gallai's question is positive for several well-known classes of graphs, as for instance connected outerplanar graphs, connected split graphs, and 2-trees. A graph is series-parallel if it does not contain $K_4$ as a minor. Series-parallel graphs are also known as partial 2-trees, which are arbitrary subgraphs of 2-trees. We present a proof that every connected series-parallel graph has a vertex that is co…
By means of analytic techniques we show that the expected number of spanning trees in a connected labelled series-parallel graph on $n$ vertices chosen uniformly at random satisfies an estimate of the form $s \varrho^{-n} (1+o(1))$, where $s$ and $\varrho$ are computable constants, the values of which are approximately $s \approx 0.09063$ and $\varrho^{-1} \approx 2.08415$. We obtain analogue results for subfamilies of series-parallel graphs including 2-connected series-parallel graphs, 2-trees, and series-parallel graphs with fixed excess.
The simple connected graphs may be classified by their cycle composition (number and lengths of cycles). This work derives the counting series of the simple connected graphs that have cycles of unrestricted number and length, but no overlapping cycles. Cycle pairs of these graphs of interest must not have common nodes or edges. The recipe of counting these graphs is based on the counting series of the associated planted graphs, multisets of planted graphs, a recursive synthesis of enriched trees, and a generalized Otter's formula that maps the underlying rooted block graphs to the underlying b…
Let G be a connected bipartite graph with color classes E and V and root polytope Q. Regarding the hypergraph (V,E) induced by G, we prove that its interior polynomial is equivalent to the Ehrhart polynomial of Q, which in turn is equivalent to the h-vector of any triangulation of Q. It follows that the interior polynomials of (V,E) and its transpose (E,V) agree. When G is a complete bipartite graph, our result recovers a well known hypergeometric identity due to Saalschütz. It also implies that certain extremal coefficients in the Homfly polynomial of a special alternating link can be read of…
Seymour's Splitter Theorem is a basic inductive tool for dealing with $3$-connected matroids. This paper proves a generalization of that theorem for the class of $2$-polymatroids. Such structures include matroids, and they model both sets of points and lines in a projective space and sets of edges in a graph. A series compression in such a structure is an analogue of contracting an edge of a graph that is in a series pair. A $2$-polymatroid $N$ is an s-minor of a $2$-polymatroid $M$ if $N$ can be obtained from $M$ by a sequence of contractions, series compressions, and dual-contractions, where…

We present an exact formula for the ordinary generating series of the simple paths between any two vertices of a graph. Our formula involves the adjacency matrix of the connected induced subgraphs and remains valid on weighted and directed graphs. As a particular case, we obtain a relation linking the Hamiltonian paths and cycles of a graph to its dominating connected sets.
The series-parallel (SP) graphs are those containing no topological $K_{_4}$ and are considered trivial. We relax the prohibition distinguishing the SP graphs by forbidding only embeddings of $K_{_4}$ whose edges with both ends 3-valent (skeleton hereafter) induce a graph isomorphic to certain prescribed subgraphs of $K_{_4}$. In particular, we describe the structure of the graphs containing no embedding of $K_{_4}$ whose skeleton is isomorphic to $P_{_3}$ or $P_{_4}$. Such "almost series-parallel graphs" (ASP) still admit a concise description. Amongst other things, their description reveals …
Consider a family $\mathcal{T}$ of 3-connected graphs of moderate growth, and let $\mathcal{G}$ be the class of graphs whose 3-connected components are graphs in $\mathcal{T}$. We present a general framework for analyzing such graphs classes based on singularity analysis of generating functions, which generalizes previously studied cases such as planar graphs and series-parallel graphs. We provide a general result for the asymptotic number of graphs in $\mathcal{G}$, based on the singularities of the exponential generating function associated to $\mathcal{T}$. We derive limit laws, which are e…
Let $M$ be a 3-connected matroid, and let $N$ be a 3-connected minor of $M$. A pair $\{x_1,x_2\} \subseteq E(M)$ is $N$-detachable if one of the matroids $M/x_1/x_2$ or $M \backslash x_1 \backslash x_2$ is both 3-connected and has an $N$-minor. This is the second in a series of three papers where we describe the structures that arise when it is not possible to find an $N$-detachable pair in $M$. In the first paper in the series, we showed that, under mild assumptions, either $M$ has an $N$-detachable pair, $M$ has one of three particular 3-separators that can appear in a matroid with no N-deta…
Given a graph $G=(V, E)$, a connected sides cut $(U, V\backslash U)$ or $δ(U)$ is the set of edges of E linking all vertices of U to all vertices of $V\backslash U$ such that the induced subgraphs $G[U]$ and $G[V\backslash U]$ are connected. Given a positive weight function $w$ defined on $E$, the maximum connected sides cut problem (MAX CS CUT) is to find a connected sides cut $Ω$ such that $w(Ω)$ is maximum. MAX CS CUT is NP-hard. In this paper, we give a linear time algorithm to solve MAX CS CUT for series parallel graphs. We deduce a linear time algorithm for the minimum cut problem in the…
This paper is the last paper in a series of five papers. Building on earlier papers in this series, we prove an analogue of Kuratowski's characterisation of graph planarity for three dimensions. More precisely, a simply connected 2-dimensional simplicial complex embeds in 3-space if and only if it has no obstruction from an explicit list of obstructions. This list of obstructions is finite except for one infinite family.
