Context: Low mass X-ray binaries were found to have very low frequency breaks in their power density spectra below which the power density spectra are nearly in white noise structure and at higher frequencies they approximately follow the $P_ν\propto ν^{-1.3}$ law.
Aims: In 2005, Gilfanov and Arefiev studied X-ray variability of persistent LMXBs in the $10^{-8}-10^{-1}$ Hz frequency range and
To determine whether high mass X-ray binary power density spectra have similar properties and the findings for low mass X-ray binaries are also valid for high mass binaries, we analyzed the time series of high mass X-ray binary sources produced by All Sky Monitor of Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer.
Method: We obtained the power density spectra of the high mass X-ray binaries using the cosine transform of autocorrelation function.
Results: We identified break frequencies for seven sources, namely OAO 1657-415, SS 433, Vela X-1, SMC X-1, 4U 1700-377, GX 301-2, and LMC X-1. The normalized break frequencies with respect to the orbital frequency ($f_{break}/f_{orbit}$) for sources OAO 1657-415, SS 433, SMC X-1 and LMC X-1 are consistent with those of Roche lobe overflow systems. The other high mass X-ray binary systems, Vela X-1, GX 301-2, and 4U 1700-377, however, have larger break frequency ratios, $f_{break}/f_{orb} $, which are indicative of short viscous times. These are all wind-accreting sources and the stellar winds in the systems allow the formation of only short radius discs.
Consequently, we qualitatively distinguished the Roche lobe overflow binaries from the wind accreting system by comparing their normalized break frequencies.
Explaining variability observed in the accretion flows of black hole X-ray binary systems remains challenging, especially concerning timescales less than, or comparable to, the viscous timescale but much larger than the inner orbital period despite decades of research identifying numerous relevant physical mechanisms. We take a simplified but broad approach to study several mechanisms likely relevant to patterns of variability observed in the persistently high-soft Roche-lobe overflow system LMC X-3. Based on simple estimates and upper bounds, we find that physics beyond varying disk/corona bi…
We present the results of 2D, moving mesh, viscous hydrodynamical simulations of accretion onto merging supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries. We include viscous heating, shock heating, and radiative cooling, and simulate the transition from the "pre-decoupling" epoch, where the inspiral timescale is longer than the viscous timescale, to the "post-decoupling" epoch, where the inspiral timescale is shorter than the viscous timescale. We find that there is no abrupt halt to the accretion at decoupling, but rather the accretion shows a slow decay, with significant accretion well after the expec…
Many statistical properties of X-ray aperiodic variability from accreting compact objects can be explained by the propagating fluctuations model applied to the accretion disc. The mass accretion rate fluctuations originate from variability of viscosity, which arises at every radius and causes local fluctuations of the density. The fluctuations diffuse through the disc and result in local variability of the mass accretion rate, which modulates the X-ray flux from the inner disc in the case of black holes, or from the surface in the case of neutron stars. A key role in the theoretical explanatio…
We have identified 55 candidate high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) in M33 using available archival {\it HST} and {\it Chandra} imaging to find blue stars associated with X-ray positions. We use the {\it HST} photometric data to model the color-magnitude diagrams in the vicinity of each candidate HMXB to measure a resolved recent star formation history (SFH), and thus a formation timescale, or age for the source. Taken together, the SFHs for all candidate HMXBs in M33 yield an age distribution that suggests preferred formation timescales for HMXBs in M33 of $<$ 5 Myr and $\sim$ 40 Myr after the i…
Giant outbursts of Be/X-ray binaries may occur when a Be-star disc undergoes strong eccentricity growth due to the Kozai-Lidov (KL) mechanism. The KL effect acts on a disc that is highly inclined to the binary orbital plane provided that the disc aspect ratio is sufficiently small. The eccentric disc overflows its Roche lobe and material flows from the Be star disc over to the companion neutron star causing X-ray activity. With N-body simulations and steady state decretion disc models we explore system parameters for which a disc in the Be/X-ray binary 4U 0115+634 is KL unstable and the result…
Very faint X-ray binaries appear to be transient in many cases with peak luminosities much fainter than that of usual soft X-ray transients, but their nature still remains elusive. We investigate the possibility that this transient behaviour is due to the same thermal/viscous instability which is responsible for outbursts of bright soft X-ray transients, occurring in ultracompact binaries for adequately low mass-transfer rates. More generally, we investigate the observational consequences of this instability when it occurs in ultracompact binaries. We use our code for modelling the thermal-vis…
General-relativistic simulations of binary neutron star mergers with viscosity reveal a new outflow mechanism operating in unequal mass binaries on dynamical timescales and enabled by turbulent viscosity. These "viscous-dynamical" ejecta are launched during merger due to the thermalization of mass exchange streams between the secondary and the primary neutron star. They are characterized by asymptotic velocities extending up to ${\sim} 0.8\, c$, and have masses that depend on the efficiency of the viscous mechanism. Depending on the unknown strength of the effective viscosity arising from magn…
Evolution of close binaries often proceeds through the common envelope stage. The physics of the envelope ejection (CEE) is not yet understood, and several mechanisms were suggested to be involved. These could give rise to different timescales for the CEE mass-loss. In order to probe the CEE-timescales we study wide companions to post-CE binaries. Faster mass-loss timescales give rise to higher disruption rates of wide binaries and result in larger average separations. We make use of data from Gaia DR2 to search for ultra-wide companions (projected separations $10^3$-$2\times 10^5$ a.u. and $M…
New viscous neutrino-radiation hydrodynamics simulations are performed for accretion disks surrounding a spinning black hole with low mass $3M_\odot$ and dimensionless spin 0.8 or 0.6 in full general relativity, aiming at modeling the evolution of a merger remnant of massive binary neutron stars or low-mass black hole-neutron star binaries. We reconfirm the following results found by previous studies of other groups: 15-30% of the disk mass is ejected from the system with the average velocity of $\sim $5-10% of the speed of light for the plausible profile of the disk as merger remnants. In add…
We present the results of 2D, moving-mesh, viscous hydrodynamical simulations of an accretion disc around a merging supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB). The simulation is pseudo-Newtonian, with the BHs modeled as point masses with a Paczynski-Wiita potential, and includes viscous heating, shock heating, and radiative cooling. We follow the gravitational inspiral of an equal-mass binary with a component mass M_bh=10^6 M_sun from an initial separation of 60r_g (where r_g=GM_bh/c^2 is the gravitational radius) to the merger. We find that a central, low-density cavity forms around the binary, a…
In this paper, we discuss the damping of density oscillations in dense nuclear matter in the temperature range relevant to neutron star mergers. This damping is due to bulk viscosity arising from the weak interaction ``Urca'' processes of neutron decay and electron capture. The nuclear matter is modelled in the relativistic density functional approach. The bulk viscosity reaches a resonant maximum close to the neutrino trapping temperature, then drops rapidly as temperature rises into the range where neutrinos are trapped in neutron stars. We investigate the bulk viscous dissipation timescales…
We propose the thick-disc model of Gu et al. 2016 to interpret the transition between soft ultraluminous state (SUL) and supersoft ultraluminous (SSUL) state in NGC 247. As accretion rate increases, the inner disc will puff up and act as shield to block the innermost X-ray emission regions and absorb both soft and hard X-ray photons. The absorbed X-ray emission will be re-radiated as a much softer blackbody X-ray spectrum. Hence NGC 247 shows flux dips in the hard X-ray band and transits from the SUL state to the SSUL state. The $\sim 200$s transition timescale can be explained by the viscous …
We present time series analyses of the full Kepler dataset of Zw 229-15. This Kepler light curve --- with a baseline greater than three years, composed of virtually continuous, evenly sampled 30-minute measurements --- is unprecedented in its quality and precision. We utilize two methods of power spectral analysis to investigate the optical variability and search for evidence of a bend frequency associated with a characteristic optical variability timescale. Each method yields similar results. The first interpolates across data gaps to use the standard Fourier periodogram. The second, using th…
The dynamics of precessing binary black holes (BBHs) in the post-Newtonian regime has a strong timescale hierarchy: the orbital timescale is very short compared to the spin-precession timescale which, in turn, is much shorter than the radiation-reaction timescale on which the orbit is shrinking due to gravitational-wave emission. We exploit this timescale hierarchy to develop a multi-scale analysis of BBH dynamics elaborating on the analysis of Kesden et al. (2015). We solve the spin-precession equations analytically on the precession time and then implement a quasi-adiabatic approach to evolv…
High mass X-ray binaries hold the promise of giving us understanding of the structure of the winds of their supermassive companion stars by using the emission from the compact object as a backlight to evaluate the variable absorption in the structured stellar wind. The wind along the line of sight can change on timescales as short as minutes and below. However, such short timescales are not available to direct measurement of absorption through X-ray spectroscopy with the current generation of X-ray telescopes. In this paper, we demonstrate the usability of color-color diagrams for assessing th…
We investigate how the proximity of supergiant donor stars to the Eddington-limit, and their advanced evolutionary stage, may influence the evolution of massive and ultra-luminous X-ray binaries with supergiant donor stars (SGXBs and ULXs). We construct models of massive stars with different internal hydrogen/helium gradients and different hydrogen-rich envelope masses, and expose them to slow mass loss to probe the response of the stellar radius. In addition, we compute the corresponding Roche-lobe overflow mass-transfer evolution with our detailed binary stellar evolution code, approximating…
We study mass flow rate through a disc resulting from a varying mass supply rate. Variable mass supply rate occurs, e.g., during disc state transitions, and in interacting eccentric binaries. It is, however, damped by the viscosity of the disc. Here, we calculate this damping in detail. We derive an analytical description of the propagation of the flow rate using the solution of Lynden-Bell & Pringle, in which the disc is assumed to extend to infinity. In particular, we derive the accretion-rate Green's function, and its Fourier transform, which gives the fractional damping at a given variabil…
Similar to black-hole X-ray binary (BHXRB) transients, hysteresis-like state transitions are also seen in some neutron-star X-ray binaries (NSXRBs). Using a method based on wavelets and lightcurves constructed from archival RXTE observations, we extract a minimal timescale over the complete range of transitions for 4U 1608-52 during the 2002 and 2007 outbursts and the 1999 and 2000 outbursts for Aql X-1. We present evidence for a strong positive correlation between this minimal timescale and a similar timescale extracted from the corresponding power spectra of these sources.
Binary stars are common. While only those with small separations may exchange gas with one another, even the widest binaries interact with their gaseous surroundings. Drag forces and accretion rates dictate how these systems are transformed by these interactions. We perform three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton flows, in which a binary moves supersonically relative to a homogeneous medium, using the adaptive mesh refinement code FLASH. We simulate a range of values of the initial semi-major axis of the orbit relative to the gravitational focusing impact parameter …
Variation of mass supply rate from the companion can be smeared out by viscous processes inside an accretion disk. By the time the flow reaches the inner edge, the variation in X-rays needs not reflect the true variation of the rate at the outer edge. However, if the viscosity fluctuates around a mean value, one would expect the viscous time scale also to spread around a mean value. In HMXBs, the size of the viscous Keplerian disk is smaller & thus such a spread could be lower as compared to the LMXBs. If there is an increasing or decreasing trend in viscosity, the interval between enhanced em…
Recently, two empirical correlations related to the minimum variability timescale ($\rm MTS$) of the lightcures are discovered in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). One is the anti-correlation between $\rm MTS$ and Lorentz factor $Γ$, the other is the anti-correlation between the $\rm MTS$ and gamma-ray luminosity $L_γ$. Both the two correlations might be used to explore the activity of the central engine of GRBs. In this paper we try to understand these empirical correlations by combining two popular black hole (BH) central engine models (namely, Blandford \& Znajek mechanism and neutrino-dominated acc…

The observed signatures of winds from X-ray binaries are broadly consistent with thermal winds, driven by X-ray irradiation of the outer accretion disc. Thermal winds produce mass outflow rates that can exceed the accretion rate in the disc. We study the impact of this mass loss on the stability and lightcurves of X-ray binaries subject to the thermal-viscous instability, which drives their outbursts. Strong mass loss could shut off outbursts early, as proposed for the 2015 outburst of V404 Cyg. We use an analytical model for thermal (Compton) wind mass loss. Scattering in the strong wind expe…
Several scenarios have been proposed in which the orbits of binary black holes enter the band of a gravitational wave detector with significant eccentricity. To avoid missing these signals or biasing parameter estimation it is important that we consider waveform models that account for eccentricity. The ingredients needed to compute post-Newtonian (PN) waveforms produced by spinning black holes inspiralling on quasi-eccentric orbits have been available for almost two decades at 2 PN order, and this work has recently been extended to 2.5 PN order. However, the computational cost of directly imp…
The gravitational interaction at parsec to sub-parsec scales between a circumbinary gas disc and a super massive black hole binary (SMBHB) is a promising mechanism to drive the migration of SMBHBs toward coalescence. The typical dynamical evolution can be separated in two main regimes: I) Slow migration ($T_{\rm mig}$ $\sim$ $10^{3-4}\times T_{\rm orb}$), where viscous torques are not efficient enough to redistribute the extracted angular momentum from the binary, leading to the formation of a low density cavity around the binary. II) Fast migration ($T_{\rm mig}$ $\sim$ $10^{1-2} \times T_{\r…
Redback millisecond pulsars (hereafter redbacks) are a sub-population of eclipsing millisecond pulsars in close binaries. The formation processes of these systems are not clear. The three pulsars showing transitions between rotation- and accretion-powered states belong to both redbacks and transient low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), suggesting a possible evolutionary link between the them. Through binary evolution calculations, we show that the accretion disks in almost all LMXBs are subject to the thermal-viscous instability during certain evolutionary stages, and the parameter space for the d…
We suggest a model of the advection dominated accretion flow (ADAF) with magnetically driven outflows to explain hysteretic state transition observed in X-ray binaries (XRBs). The transition from a thin disk to an ADAF occurs when the mass accretion rate is below a critical value. The critical mass accretion rate for the ADAF can be estimated by equating the equilibration timescale to accretion timescale of the ADAF, which is sensitive to its radial velocity. The radial velocity of thin disks is very small, which leads to the advection of the external field in thin disks very inefficient. ADAF…
A natural consequence of the galaxy formation paradigm is the existence of supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries. Gravitational perturbations from a far-away SMBH companion can induce high orbital eccentricities on dark matter particles orbiting the primary SMBH via the eccentric Kozai-Lidov mechanism. This process yields an influx of dark matter particles into the primary SMBH ergosphere, where test particles linger for long timescales. This influx results in high self-gravitating densities, forming a dark matter clump that is extremely close to the SMBH. In such a situation, the gravitatio…
While jets appear as a fundamental result of accretion processes onto compact objects in X-ray binaries, there is as yet no standard model for their underlying physics. The origin of the observed disk-jet coupling also remains largely unknown. X-ray variability studies have revealed complex variability in the accretion flow onto stellar-mass black holes and neutron stars, on timescales as short as milliseconds. The detection of correlated broad-band rapid time variability in the jet emission would provide valuable information on how the variability is transferred along the jet and on the times…
Accreting black holes are unique tools to understand the physics under extreme gravity. While black hole X-ray binaries differ vastly in mass from AGN, their accretion and ejection flows are assumed to be essentially similar. Black hole X-ray binaries or microquasars are, however, quasars for the impatient as variability timescales scale directly with mass. State changes, i.e., strong variations in emission properties, in black hole X-ray binaries can happen within hours and whole outburst cycles within months to years. But our understanding of the drivers of such changes and the contributions…
The stability criteria of rapid mass transfer and common envelope evolution are fundamental in binary star evolution. They determine the mass, mass ratio and orbital distribution of many important systems, such as X-ray binaries, Type Ia supernovae and merging gravitational wave sources. We use our adiabatic mass-loss model to systematically survey the intermediate-mass stars' thresholds for dynamical-timescale mass transfer. The impact of metallicity on the stellar responses and critical mass ratios is explored. Both tables ($Z=0.001$) and fitting formula ($Z=0.001$ and $Z=0.02$) of critical …
Flickering, and more specifically aperiodic broad-band variability, is an important phenomenon used in understanding the geometry and dynamics of accretion flows. Although the inner regions of accretion flows are known to generate variability on relatively fast timescales, the broad-band variability generated in the outer regions have mostly remained elusive due to their long intrinsic variability timescales. Ultra-compact AM CVn systems are relatively small when compared to other accreting binaries and are well suited to search and characterise low frequency variability. Here we present the f…
Using archival RXTE data, we show that the ultracompact X-ray binary in NGC 1851 exhibits large amplitude X-ray flux varations of more than a factor of 10 on timescales of days to weeks and undergoes sustained periods of months where the time-averaged luminosty varies by factors of two. Variations of this magnitude and timescale have not been reported previously in other ultracompact X-ray binaries. Mass transfer in ultracompact binaries is thought to be driven by gravitational radiation and the predicted transfer rates are so high that the disks of ultracompact binaries with orbits as short a…
We propose a model to explain the time delay between the peak of the optical and X-ray luminosity, \dt hereafter, in UV/optically-selected tidal disruption events (TDEs). The following picture explains the observed \dt in several TDEs as a consequence of the circularization and disk accretion processes as long as the sub-Eddington accretion. At the beginning of the circularization, the fallback debris is thermalized by the self-crossing shock caused by relativistic precession, providing the peak optical emission. During the circularization process, the mass fallback rate decreases with time to…
The purpose of this work is to review the observational properties of Be/X-ray binaries. The open questions in Be/X-ray binaries include those related to the Be star companion, that is, the so-called "Be phenomenon", such as, timescales associated to the formation and dissipation of the equatorial disc, mass-ejection mechanisms, V/R variability, and rotation rates; those related to the neutron star, such as, mass determination, accretion physics, and spin period evolution; but also, those that result from the interaction of the two constituents, such as, disc truncation and mass transfer. Unti…
We present the results of our monitoring program to study the long-term variability of the Halpha line in high-mass X-ray binaries. We have carried out the most complete optical spectroscopic study of the global properties of high-mass X-ray binaries so far with the analysis of more than 1100 spectra of 20 sources. Our aim is to characterise the optical variability timescales and study the interaction between the neutron star and the accreting material. Our results can be summarised as follows: i) we find that Be/X-ray binaries with narrow orbits are more variable than systems with long orbita…
In addition to gamma-ray binaries which contain a compact object, high-energy and very high-energy gamma rays have also been detected from colliding-wind binaries. The collision of the winds produces two strong shock fronts, one for each wind, both surrounding a shock region of compressed and heated plasma, where particles are accelerated to very high energies. Magnetic field is also amplified in the shocked region on which the acceleration of particles greatly depends. In this work, we performed full three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations of colliding winds coupled to a code that e…
We analyze the inspiral dynamics of equal-mass precessing black-hole binaries using multi-timescale techniques. The orbit-averaged post-Newtonian evolutionary equations admit two constants of motion in the equal-mass limit, namely the magnitude of the total spin $S$ and the effective spin $ξ$. This feature makes the entire dynamics qualitatively different compared to the generic unequal-mass case, where only $ξ$ is constant while the variable $S$ parametrizes the precession dynamics. For fixed individual masses and spin magnitudes, an equal-mass black-hole inspiral is uniquely characterized by…
Stellar-mass binary black holes (BBHs) embedded in active galactic nucleus (AGN) discs are possible progenitors of black-hole mergers detected in gravitational waves by LIGO/VIRGO. To better understand the hydrodynamical evolution of BBHs interacting with the disc gas, we perform a suite of high-resolution 2D simulations of binaries in local disc (shearing-box) models, considering various binary mass ratios, eccentricities and background disc properties. We use the $γ$-law equation of state and adopt a robust post-processing treatment to evaluate the mass accretion rate, torque and energy tran…
The discovery of periodicity in the arrival times of the fast radio bursts (FRBs) poses a challenge to the oft-studied magnetar scenarios. However, models that postulate that FRBs result from magnetized shocks or magnetic reconnection in a relativistic outflow are not specific to magnetar engines; instead, they require only the impulsive injection of relativistic energy into a dense magnetized medium. Motivated thus, we outline a new scenario in which FRBs are powered by short-lived relativistic outflows (``flares'') from accreting black holes or neutron stars, which propagate into the cavity …
Stable mass transfer from a massive post-main sequence (post-MS) donor is thought to be a short-lived event of thermal-timescale mass transfer which strips the donor star of nearly its entire H-rich envelope, producing a hot helium star. This long-standing picture is based on stellar models with Hertzprung gap (HG) donors. Motivated by a finding that in low-metallicity binaries, post-MS mass transfer may instead be initiated by core-helium burning (CHeB) donors, we use the MESA code to compute grids of detailed massive binary models at three metallicities: Solar and that of the Large and the S…
We present long term H$α$ monitoring results of five Be/X-ray binaries to study the Be disc size variations and their influence on Type II (giant) X-ray outbursts. The work is done in the context of the viscous decretion disc model which predicts that Be discs in binary systems are truncated by resonant torques induced by the neutron star in its orbit. Our observations show that type II outbursts are not correlated(nor anti-correlated) with the disc size, as they are seen to occur both at relatively small and large Be disc radii. We discuss these observations in context of alternate interpreta…
The hydrogen-rich envelopes accreted by white dwarf stars from their red dwarf companions lead to thermonuclear runaways observed as classical nova eruptions peaking at up to 1 Million solar luminosities. Virtually all nova progenitors are novalike binaries exhibiting high rates of mass transfer to their white dwarfs before and after an eruption. It is a puzzle that binaries indistinguishable from novalikes, but with much lower mass transfer rates, and resulting dwarf nova outbursts, co-exist at the same orbital periods. Nova shells surrounding several dwarf novae demonstrate that at least som…
Type I outbursts in Be/X-ray binaries are usually associated with the eccentricity of the binary orbit. The neutron star accretes gas from the outer parts of the decretion disk around the Be star at each periastron passage. However, this mechanism cannot explain type I outbursts that have been observed in nearly circular orbit Be/X-ray binaries. With hydrodynamical simulations and analytic estimates we find that in a circular orbit binary, a nearly coplanar disk around the Be star can become eccentric. The extreme mass ratio of the binary leads to the presence of the 3:1 Lindblad resonance ins…
X-ray variability of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and black hole binaries can be analysed by means of the power spectral density (PSD). The break observed in the power spectrum defines a characteristic variability timescale of the accreting system. The empirical variability scaling that relates characteristic timescale, black hole mass, and accretion rate ($T_B \propto M_{BH}^{2.1}/\dot{M}^{0.98}$) extends from supermassive black holes in AGN down to stellar-mass black holes in binary systems. We suggest that the PSD break timescale is associated with the cooling timescale of electrons in the …
We carry out 2D viscous hydrodynamics simulations of circumbinary disk (CBD) accretion using {\footnotesize AREPO}. We resolve the accretion flow from a large-scale CBD down to the streamers and disks around individual binary components. Extending our recent studies \citep{mun19}, we consider circular binaries with various mass ratios ($0.1\leq q_{\rm{b}}\leq1$) and study accretion from ``infinite'', steady-supply disks and from finite-sized, viscously spreading tori. For ``infinite'' disks, a global steady state can be reached, and the accretion variability has a dominant frequency ${\sim}0.2…
