New viscous neutrino-radiation hydrodynamics simulations are performed for accretion disks surrounding a spinning black hole with low mass $3M_\odot$ and dimensionless spin 0.8 or 0.6 in full general relativity, aiming at modeling the evolution of a merger remnant of massive binary neutron stars or low-mass black hole-neutron star binaries. We reconfirm the following results found by previous studies of other groups: 15-30% of the disk mass is ejected from the system with the average velocity of $\sim $5-10% of the speed of light for the plausible profile of the disk as merger remnants. In addition, we find that for the not extremely high viscous coefficient case, the neutron richness of the ejecta does not become very high, because weak interaction processes enhance the electron fraction during the viscous expansion of the disk before the onset of the mass ejection, resulting in the suppression of the lanthanide synthesis. For high-mass disks, the viscous expansion timescale is increased by a longer-term neutrino emission, and hence, the electron fraction of the ejecta becomes even higher. We also confirm that the mass distribution of the electron fraction depends strongly on the magnitude of the given viscous coefficient. This demonstrates that a first-principle magnetohydrodynamics simulation is necessary for black hole-disk systems with sufficient grid resolution and with sufficiently long timescale (longer than seconds) to clarify the nucleosynthesis and electromagnetic signals from them.
We perform long-term general relativistic neutrino radiation hydrodynamics simulations (in axisymmetry) for a massive neutron star (MNS) surrounded by a torus, which is a canonical remnant formed after the binary neutron star merger. We take into account the effects of viscosity, which is likely to arise in the merger remnant due to magnetohydrodynamical turbulence. As the initial condition, we employ the azimuthally averaged data of the MNS-torus system derived in a three-dimensional, numerical-relativity simulation for the binary neutron star merger. The viscous effect plays key roles for th…
Long-term viscous neutrino-radiation hydrodynamics simulations in full general relativity are performed for a massive disk surrounding spinning stellar-mass black holes with mass $M_{\rm BH}=4$, $6$, and $10M_\odot$ and initial dimensionless spin $χ\approx 0.8$. The initial disk is chosen to have mass $M_{\rm disk}\approx 0.1$ or $3M_\odot$ as plausible models of the remnants for the merger of black hole-neutron star binaries or the stellar core collapse from a rapidly rotating progenitor, respectively. For $M_{\rm disk} \approx 0.1M_\odot$ with the outer disk edge initially located at $r_{\rm…
We analyze the interaction of a radiation-dominated jet and its surroundings using the equations of radiation hydrodynamics in the viscous limit. In a previous paper we considered the two-stream scenario, which treats the jet and its surroundings as distinct media interacting through radiation viscous forces. Here we present an alternative boundary layer model, known as the free-streaming jet model -- where a narrow stream of fluid is injected into a static medium -- and present solutions where the flow is ultrarelativistic and the boundary layer is dominated by radiation. It is shown that the…
There is accumulating evidence for mass ejection in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) driven by radio pulsar activity during X-ray quiescence. In this paper we consider the condition for mass ejection by comparing the radiation pressure from a millisecond pulsar, and the gas pressure at the inner Lagrange point or at the surrounding accretion disk. We calculate the critical spin period of the pulsar below which mass ejection is allowed. Combining with the evolution of the mass transfer rate, we present constraints on the orbital periods of the systems. We show that mass ejection could happen in …
We study the post-merger mass ejection of low-mass binary neutron stars (NSs) with the system mass of $2.5\, M_\odot$, and subsequent nucleosynthesis by performing general-relativistic, neutrino-radiation viscous-hydrodynamics simulations in axial symmetry. We find that the merger remnants are long-lived massive NSs surviving more than several seconds, irrespective of the nuclear equations of state (EOSs) adopted. The ejecta masses of our fiducial models are $\sim 0.06$-$0.1\, M_\odot$ (depending on the EOS), being $\sim 30\%$ of the initial disk masses ($\sim 0.15$-$0.3\, M_\odot$). Post-proc…
The plateau in the duration distribution of long Gamma-Ray Bursts (LGRBs) provides a direct observational evidence for the Collapsar model. The plateau reflects the fact that the observed duration satisfies: $T_{90} = t_{e}-t_{b}$ where $t_{e}$ is the time that the central engine operates and $t_{b}$ is a threshold time, interpreted within the Collapsar model as the time it takes for the relativistic jet to penetrate the stellar envelope. Numerical simulation and macronova observations suggest that compact binary mergers involve mass ejection. If short-Gamma Ray Bursts (sGRBs) arise from such …
We present a unifying scenario to address the physical origin of the diversity of X-ray lightcurves within the rho variability class of the microquasar GRS 1915+105. This 'heartbeat' state is characterized by a bright flare that recurs every ~50-100 seconds, but the profile and duration of the flares varies significantly from observation to observation. Based on a comprehensive, phase-resolved study of heartbeats in the RXTE archive, we demonstrate that very different X-ray lightcurves do not require origins in different accretion processes. Indeed, our detailed comparison of the phase-resolve…
Using the relativistic equations of radiation hydrodynamics in the viscous limit, we analyze the boundary layers that develop between radiation-dominated jets and their environments. In this paper we present the solution for the self-similar, 2-D, plane-parallel two-stream problem, wherein the jet and the ambient medium are considered to be separate, interacting fluids, and we compare our results to those of previous authors. (In a companion paper we investigate an alternative scenario, known as the free-streaming jet model.) Consistent with past findings, we show that the boundary layer that …
We use Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics to study viscous accretion flows around a weakly magnetic neutron star. We show the formation of multiple ``boundary" layers in presence of both cooling and viscosity. We find that with the introduction of a small viscosity in a sub-Keplerian flow, much like the wind accretion in HMXBs such as Cir X-1, only a single Normal Boundary Layer (NBOL) forms to adjust the rotational velocity component. With the increase of viscosity, the region extends radially and beyond some critical value, a RAdiative KEplerian Disk/layer (RAKED) forms between the sub-Kepleria…
In addition to producing a strong gravitational signal, a short gamma-ray burst (GRB), and a compact remnant, neutron star mergers eject significant masses at significant kinetic energies. This mass ejection takes place via dynamical mass ejection and a GRB jet but other processes have also been suggested: a shock-breakout material, a cocoon resulting from the interaction of the jet with other ejecta, and viscous and neutrino driven winds from the central remnant or the accretion disk. The different components of the ejected masses include up to a few percent of a solar mass, some of which is …
We investigate the behaviour of low angular momentum viscous accretion flows around black holes using Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method. Earlier, it has been observed that in a significant part of the energy and angular momentum parameter space, rotating transonic accretion flow undergoes shock transition before entering in to the black hole and a part of the post-shock matter is ejected as bipolar outflows, which are supposed to be the precursor of relativistic jets. In this work, we simulate accretion flows having injection parameters from the inviscid shock parameter space, and stu…
We investigated flow in Schwarzschild metric, around a non-rotating black hole and obtained self-consistent accretion - ejection solution in full general relativity. We covered the whole of parameter space in the advective regime to obtain shocked, as well as, shock-free accretion solution. We computed the jet streamline using von - Zeipel surfaces and projected the jet equations of motion on to the streamline and solved them simultaneously with the accretion disc equations of motion. We found that steady shock cannot exist {for $α\gsim0.06$} in the general relativistic prescription, but is lo…
We present a systematic numerical relativity study of the mass ejection and the associated electromagnetic transients and nucleosynthesis from binary neutron star (NS) mergers. We find that a few $10^{-3}\, M_\odot$ of material are ejected dynamically during the mergers. The amount and the properties of these outflow depend on binary parameters and on the NS equation of state (EOS). A small fraction of these ejecta, typically ${\sim}10^{-6}\, M_\odot$, is accelerated by shocks formed shortly after merger to velocities larger than $0.6\, {\rm c}$ and produces bright radio flares on timescales o…
Long-term neutrino-radiation resistive-magnetohydrodynamics simulations in full general relativity are performed for a system composed of a massive neutron star and a torus formed as a remnant of binary neutron star mergers. The simulation is performed in axial symmetry incorporating a mean-field dynamo term for a hypothetical amplification of the magnetic-field strength. We first calibrate the mean-field dynamo parameters by comparing the results for the evolution of black hole-disk systems with viscous hydrodynamics results. We then perform simulations for the system of a remnant massive neu…
Astrophysical jets are launched from strongly magnetized systems that host an accretion disk surrounding a central object. Here we address the question how to generate the accretion disk magnetization and field structure required for jet launching. We continue our work from Paper I (Mattia & Fendt 2020a), considering a non-scalar accretion disk mean-field $α^2Ω$-dynamo in the context of large scale disk-jet simulations. We now investigate a disk dynamo that follows analytical solutions of mean-field dynamo theory, essentially based only on a single parameter, the Coriolis number. We thereby co…
Most common formation channels of stellar mass black hole (BH) binaries like the ones observed by LIGO, often assume they are assembled from the direct collapse of massive pre-supernova stars. However, it is still unclear whether the final mass and spin of the newly formed BH arises from the collapse of the entire stellar progenitor or just a fraction of it, given that coupling of accretion feedback released during BH formation to the surrounding infalling star will inevitably lead to its ejection. If the BH is built up via disk accretion, outflows from the center will result in residual gas e…
The tidal disruption event by a supermassive black hole in Swift J1644+57 can trigger limit-cycle oscillations between a supercritically accreting X-ray bright state and a subcritically accreting X-ray dim state. Time evolution of the debris gas around a black hole with mass $M=10^{6} {\MO}$ is studied by performing axisymmetric, two-dimensional radiation hydrodynamic simulations. We assumed the $α$-prescription of viscosity, in which the viscous stress is proportional to the total pressure. The mass supply rate from the outer boundary is assumed to be ${\dot M}_{\rm supply}=100L_{\rm Edd}/c^2…
We present the results of a calculation of the thermal spectrum from a 2D, moving mesh, high-accuracy, viscous hydrodynamical simulation of an accreting supermassive black hole binary. We include viscous heating, shock heating, and radiative cooling, evolving for longer than a viscous time so that we reach a quasi-steady accretion state. In agreement with previous work, we find that gas is efficiently stripped from the inner edge of the circumbinary disk and enters the cavity along accretion streams, which feed persistent "mini-disks" surrounding each black hole. We also find that emission fro…
Astrophysical accretion flows are associated with energetic emission of radiation and outflows (winds and jets). Extensive observations of these two processes in X-ray binary outbursts are available. A convincing understanding of their dynamics remains, however, elusive. The main agent that controls the dynamics is believed to be a large scale magnetic field that threads the system. We propose that during the quiescent state, the field is held in place by a delicate balance between inward advection and outward diffusion through the accreting matter. We also propose that the source of the field…
Astrophysical jets are launched from strongly magnetized systems that host an accretion disk surrounding a central object. The origin of the jet launching magnetic field is one of the open questions for modeling the accretion-ejection process. Here we address the question how to generate the accretion disk magnetization and field structure required for jet launching. Applying the PLUTO code, we present the first resistive MHD simulations of jet launching including a non-scalar accretion disk mean-field $α^2Ω$-dynamo in the context of large scale disk-jet simulations. Essentially, we find the $…

We argue that the kilonova/macronova associated with the gravitational-wave event GW190425 could have been bright enough to be detected if it was caused by the merger of a low-mass black hole and a neutron star. Although tidal disruption occurs for such a low-mass black hole as is generally expected, the masses of the dynamical ejecta are limited to <~10^{-3}M_sun, which is consistent with previous work in the literature. The remnant disk could be as massive as 0.05--0.1M_sun, and the disk outflow of ~0.01--0.03M_sun is likely to be driven by viscous or magnetohydrodynamic effects. The disk ou…
We study the merger of black hole-neutron star binaries by fully general-relativistic neutrino-radiation-hydrodynamics simulations throughout the coalescence, particularly focusing on the role of neutrino irradiation in dynamical mass ejection. Neutrino transport is incorporated by an approximate transfer scheme based on the truncated moment formalism. While we fix the mass ratio of the black hole to the neutron star to be 4 and the dimensionless spin parameter of the black hole to be 0.75, the equations of state for finite-temperature neutron-star matter are varied. The hot accretion disk for…
We investigate the launching mechanism of relativistic jets from black hole sources, in particular the strong winds from the surrounding accretion disk. Numerical investigations of the disk wind launching - the simulation of the accretion-ejection transition - have so far almost only been done for non-relativistic systems. From these simulations we know that resistivity, or magnetic diffusivity, plays an important role for the launching process. Here, we extend this treatment to general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (GR-MHD) applying the resistive GR-MHD code rHARM. Our model setup conside…
We present fully general-relativistic simulations of binary neutron star mergers with a temperature and composition dependent nuclear equation of state. We study the dynamical mass ejection from both quasi-circular and dynamical-capture eccentric mergers. We systematically vary the level of our treatment of the microphysics to isolate the effects of neutrino cooling and heating and we compute the nucleosynthetic yields of the ejecta. We find that eccentric binaries can eject significantly more material than quasi-circular binaries and generate bright infrared and radio emission. In all our sim…
Two close-in planets have been recently found around the M-dwarf flare star AU Microscopii (AU Mic). These Neptune-sized planets (AU Mic b and c) seem to be located very close to the so-called "evaporation valley" in the exoplanet population, making this system an important target for studying atmospheric loss on exoplanets. This process, while mainly driven by the high-energy stellar radiation, will be strongly mediated by the space environment surrounding the planets. Here we present an investigation on this last area, performing 3D numerical modeling of the quiescent stellar wind from AU Mi…
We investigate the electromagnetic (EM) counterpart of gravitational waves (GWs) emitted by a supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) through the viscous dissipation of the GW energy in an accretion disk and stars surrounding the SMBHB. We account for the suppression of the heating rate if the forcing period is shorter than the turnover time of the largest turbulent eddies. We find that the viscous heating luminosity in 0.1 solar mass stars can be significantly higher than their intrinsic luminosity, but still too low to be detected for extragalactic sources. The relative brightening is small f…
Massive neutron star (NS) with lifetimes of at least several seconds are expected to be the result of a sizable fraction of NS mergers. We study their formation using a large set of numerical relativity simulations. We show that they are initially endowed with angular momentum that significantly exceeds the mass-shedding limit for rigidly-rotating equilibria. We find that gravitational-wave (GW) emission is not able to remove this excess angular momentum within the time over which solid body rotation should be achieved. Instead, we argue that the excess angular momentum could be carried away b…
General-relativistic neutrino-radiation magnetohydrodynamics simulation of seconds-long black hole-neutron star mergers: Dependence on initial magnetic field strength, configuration, and neutron-star equation of state
We derive stringent constraints on the persistent source associated with FRB 121102: Size $10^{17}$ cm $<R<10^{18}$ cm, age $<300$ yr, characteristic electron energy $\varepsilon_e\sim0.3$ GeV, total energy $\sim10^{49}$ erg. The hot radiating plasma is confined by a cold plasma of mass $M_c<0.03 (R/10^{17.5}{\rm cm})^4 M_\odot$. The source is nearly resolved, and may be resolved by 10 GHz observations. The fact that $\varepsilon_e\sim m_p c^2$ suggests that the hot plasma was created by the ejection of a mildly relativistic, $M\sim10^{-5} M_\odot$ shell, which propagated into an extended ambi…
The accretion disk that forms after a neutron star merger is a source of neutron-rich ejecta. The ejected material contributes to a radioactively-powered electromagnetic transient, with properties that depend sensitively on the composition of the outflow. Here we investigate how the spin of the black hole remnant influences mass ejection on the thermal and viscous timescales. We carry out two-dimensional, time-dependent hydrodynamic simulations of merger remnant accretion disks including viscous angular momentum transport and approximate neutrino self-irradiation. The gravity of the spinning b…
Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) display complex X-ray spectra which exhibit a variety of emission and absorption features, that are commonly interpreted as a combination of i) a relativistically smeared reflection component, resulting from the irradiation of an accretion disk by a compact hard X-ray source, ii) one or several warm/ionized absorption components produced by AGN-driven outflows crossing our line of sight, and iii) a non relativistic reflection component produced by more distant material. Disentangling these components via detailed model fitting can thus be used to constrain the blac…
