An experimental program to demonstrate a novel phase space manipulation in which the horizontal and longitudinal emittances of a particle beam are exchanged has been completed at the Fermilab A0 Photoinjector. A new beamline, consisting of a TM110 deflecting mode cavity flanked by two horizontally dispersive doglegs has been installed. We report on the first direct observation of transverse and longitudinal emittance exchange.
A new approach to the longitudinal vane modulation profile in a Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) has been discovered that significantly improves bunching and longitudinal emittance control. This procedure has been successfully tested in different RFQ models with satisfactory reduction of the longitudinal emittance; thus, this advanced method can be implemented for any RFQ. Highlights: Advanced longitudinal vane modulation profile that improves bunching and longitudinal emittance control. Vane manipulation to avoid the nonlinear effects of the accelerating field inside the cell. Analysis in the…
We revise a previous version of this paper proposing a method to transfer emittances from the transverse planes to the longitudinal. It turned out the system showed non-Hamiltonian behavior because the longitudinal component of the transverse electric field at ends of the transverse resonator were not included in the model. Including those fields the 6D emittance is conserved. We review the mechanism behind the emittance conservation. It is still possible to produce an emittance transfer with the RF quadrupole field setting the tunes on synchro-betatron resonance for a short period of time the…
This paper presents an analysis of the emittance preservation during a heavy ion bunching process. This analysis aims at finding the correlation between the rms emittance of a coasting beam and that of the resulting bunches. The emittance of a Gaussian coasting beam bunched adiabatically in synchrotrons is investigated using theoretical considerations and particle tracking simulations. New results are presented on the relation between the emittance before and after the bunching process. It is found that a constant factor can be determined to describe this relation. This factor can be used to a…
The well-known relaxed theoretical minimum emittance (TME) cell is commonly used in the design of multi-bend achromat (MBA) lattices for the new generation of diffraction limited storage rings. But significantly lower emittance at moderate focusing properties can be achieved by combining longitudinal gradient bends (LGB) and reverse bends (RB) in a periodic lattice unit cell. LGBs alone, however, are of rather limited gain. We investigate the emittance achievable for different unit cell classes as a function of the cell phase advance in a most general framework, i.e. with a minimum of assumpti…
Full exploitation of emittance exchange (EEX) requires aberration-free performance of a complex imaging system including active radio-frequency (RF) elements which can add temporal distortions. We investigate the performance of an EEX line where the exchange occurs between two dimensions with normalized emittances which differ by multiple orders of magnitude. The transverse emittance is exchanged into the longitudinal dimension using a double dog-leg emittance exchange setup with a five cell RF deflector cavity. Aberration correction is performed on the four most dominant aberrations. These in…
We report on an experiment to produce a train of sub-picosecond microbunches using a transverse-to-longitudinal emittance exchange technique. The generation of a modulation on the longitudinal phase space is done by converting an initial horizontal modulation produced using a multislits mask. The preliminary experimental data clearly demonstrate the conversion process. To date only the final energy modulation has been measured. However numerical simulations, in qualitative agreement with the measurements, indicate that the conversion process should also introduce a temporal modulation.
We show that if in the particle beam there are linear correlations between energy of particles and their transverse positions and momenta (linear beam dispersions), then the transverse projected emittances always can be reduced by letting the beam to pass through magnetostatic system with specially chosen nonzero lattice dispersions. The maximum possible reduction of the transverse projected emittances occurs when all beam dispersions are zeroed, and the values of the lattice dispersions required for that are completely defined by the values of the beam dispersions and the beam rms energy spre…
In this paper we revisit the calculation of the emittance dilution of charged particle bunches due to collimator wakefield effects in the paraxial approximation. We also compare analytical results with numerical simulations considering the example of a collimator structure installed in the Accelerator Test Facility 2 (ATF2) at KEK
Space-charge-induced emittance growth is a big con-cern for designing low energy and high intensity linacs. The Equipartitioning Principle was introduced to mini-mize space-charge-induced emittance growth by remov-ing free energy between the transverse and longitudinal degrees of freedom. In this study, a different design guide-line is being proposed. It suggests to hold the ratio of longitudinal emittance to transverse emittance around one and take advantage of low emittance transfer for minimizing emittance growth. Using a high intensity RFQ accelerator as an example, a comparison between th…
Generating temporally separated two X-ray pulses or even two pulses with different colors has been pursued for various X-ray experiments. Recently, this concept is extended to generate multi-color X-ray pulses, and a few approaches have been proposed. We introduce one of possible new ways to generate multi-color X-ray using a longitudinal phase space (LPS) modulator and a manipulator. In this example, a wakefield structure and double-emittance exchange beamline are used as the LPS modulator and the LPS manipulator, respectively. In this way, we can generate multiple bunches having designed ene…
We present a pepper-pot design in which we address the problem of penetration by high energy particle, deriving analytical expressions and performing GEANT4 simulations for the estimation of the error introduced by a long (thick) pepper-pot. We also show that a careful design allows to measure the emittance of electron beam of several hundred MeV and beyond.
Small, stray magnetic and RF fields in electron guns and injectors can perturb an electron beam and introduce correlations between the otherwise orthogonal transverse trajectories. These correlations couple the x and y dynamics which increases the transverse emittance. If the correlation becomes "diluted" or randomized in the beam transport then as the correlation disappears the 4D emittance increases. This paper discusses two important correlations common to most electron injectors. The first results from the coupling of a weak quadrupole field with beam rotation in a solenoid, and the second…
Knowledge of the transverse four-dimensional beam rms-parameters is essential for applications that involve lattice elements that couple the two transverse degrees of freedom (planes). Of special interest is the removal of inter-plane correlations to reduce the projected emittances. A dedicated ROtating System for Emittance measurements (ROSE) has been proposed, developed, and successfully commissioned to fully determine the four-dimensional beam matrix. This device has been used at the High Charge injector (HLI) at GSI using a beam line which is composed of a skew quadrupole triplet, a normal…
Precise manipulation of high brightness electron beams requires detailed knowledge of the particle phase space shape and evolution. As ultrafast electron pulses become brighter, new operational regimes become accessible with emittance values in the picometer range, with enormous impact on potential scientific applications. Here we present a new characterization method for such beams and demonstrate experimentally its ability to reconstruct the 4D transverse beam matrix of strongly correlated electron beams with sub-nanometer emittance and sub-micrometer spot size, produced with the HiRES beaml…
2D and 4D transverse phase-space of a low-energy ion-beam is measured with two of the most common emittance scanners. The article covers the description of the installation, the setup, the settings, the experiment and the benchmark of the two emittance meters. We compare the results from three series of measurements and present the advantages and drawbacks of the two systems. Coupling between phase-space planes, correlations and mitigation of deleterious effects are discussed. The influence of background noise and aberrations of trace-space figures on emittance measurements and RMS calculation…
For injection of beams into circular machines with different horizontal and vertical emittance acceptance, the injection efficiency can be increased if these beams are flat, i.e. if they feature unequal transverse emittances. Generation of flat electron beams is well known and has been demonstrated already in beam experiments. It was proposed also for ion beams that were generated in an Electron Cyclotron-Resonance (ECR) source. We introduce an extension of the method to beams that underwent charge state stripping without requiring their generation inside an ECR source. Results from multi-part…
The ORBIT code has been widely used for beam dynamics simulations including injection and acceleration in high-intensity hadron synchrotrons. When the ORBIT's 1D longitudinal tracking was employed for the acceleration process in CSNS/RCS, the longitudinal emittance in eV-s was found decreasing substantially during acceleration, though the adiabatic condition is still met during this process. This is against the Liouville theorem that predicts the preservation of the emittance during acceleration. The recent machine study in the accelerator and the simulations with a self-made code demonstrate …
A high-energy muon collider scenario require a "final cooling" system that reduces transverse emittance by a factor of ~10 while allowing longitudinal emittance increase. The baseline approach has low-energy transverse cooling within high-field solenoids, with strong longitudinal heating. This approach and its recent simulation are discussed. Alternative approaches which more explicitly include emittance exchange are also presented. Round-to-flat beam transform, transverse slicing, and longitudinal bunch coalescence are possible components of an alternative approach. Wedge-based emittance exch…
In the lattice designs for the next generation storage ring light sources, longitudinal gradient bending magnets and anti-bending magnets have been adopted. A logical question raised by the trend of varying the longitudinal distribution of dipole strength is: what are the optimal distributions of the dipole and quadrupole fields in a lattice cell for the purpose of minimizing the natural emittance? We studied this problem by numerically optimizing the dipole and quadrupole distributions of the normalized cell optics using the particle swarm optimization algorithm. The results reveal the featur…
The solenoid scan is a widely used method for the in-situ measurement of the thermal emittance in a photocathode gun. The popularity of this method is due to its simplicity and convenience since all rf photocathode guns are equipped with an emittance compensation solenoid. This paper shows that the solenoid scan measurement overestimates the thermal emittance in the ordinary measurement configuration due to a weak quadrupole field (present in either the rf gun or gun solenoid) followed by a rotation in the solenoid. This coupled transverse dynamics aberration introduces a correlation between t…
We present a clear signature of the Schottky effect in a RF photoinjector using photons with energy lower than the Mg cathode work function. This signature is manifested by the shift in the RF phase angle for the onset of the detection of photoelectrons via single-photon absorption and allows for a reasonable estimate of the field enhancement factor. This is a viable method to generate an electron beam with very low thermal emittance and thus, a high brightness beam.
The generation of a flat electron beam directly from a photoinjector is an attractive alternative to the electron damping ring as envisioned for linear colliders. It also has potential applications to light sources such as the generation of ultra-short x-ray pulses or Smith-Purcell free electron lasers. In this Letter, we report on the experimental generation of a flat-beam with a measured transverse emittance ratio of $100\pm 20.2$ for a bunch charge of $\sim 0.5$ nC; the smaller measured normalized root-mean-square emittance is $\sim 0.4$ $μ$m and is limited by the resolution of our experime…
Controlling non-linear effects in the transverse dynamics of charged particle beams in circular accelerators opens new possibilities for controlling some of the beam properties. Beam splitting by crossing a stable 1D non-linear resonance is part of the routine operation of the CERN Proton Synchrotron. The beam undergoes trapping and transport inside stable islands created in the horizontal plane to allow multi-turn extraction towards the Super Proton Synchrotron, where the beam is used for fixed-target experiments. This process acts only on the horizontal beam emittance, inducing a reduction o…
Ultralow emittance ($\leq20$ nm, normalized) electron beams with $10^5$ electrons per bunch are obtained by tightly focusing an ultrafast ($\sim$ 100 fs) laser pulse on the cathode of a 1.6 cell radiofrequency photoinjector. Taking advantage of the small initial longitudinal emittance, a downstream velocity bunching cavity is used to compress the beam to $<10$ fs rms bunch length. The measurement is performed using a thick high voltage deflecting cavity which is shown to be well-suited to measure ultrashort durations of bunching beams, provided that the beam reaches a ballistic longitudinal fo…
In state of the art photoinjector electron sources, thermal emittance from photoemission dominates the final injector emittance. Therefore, low thermal emittance cathode developments and diagnostics are very important. Conventional thermal emittance measurements for the high gradient gun are time-consuming and thus thermal emittance is not measured as frequently as quantum efficiency during the lifetime of photocathodes, although both are important properties for the photoinjector optimizations. In this paper, a single shot measurement of photoemission transverse momentum, i.e., thermal emitta…
Proposed fourth generation light sources using SASE FELs to generate short pulse, coherent, X-rays require demonstration of high brightness electron sources. The Gun Test Facility (GTF) at SLAC was built to test high brightness sources for the proposed Linac Coherent Light Source at SLAC. The transverse emittance measurements are made at nearly 30 MeV by measuring the spot size on a YAG screen using the quadrupole scan technique. The emittance was measured to vary from 1 to 3.5 mm-mrad as the charge is increased from 50 to 350 pC using a laser pulse width of 2 ps FWHM. The measurements are in …

Emittance exchange mediated by wedge absorbers can be used for longitudinal ionization cooling and for final transverse emittance minimization for a muon collider. A wedge absorber within the Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) could serve as a demonstration of the type of emittance exchange needed for six-dimensional (6D) cooling, including the configurations needed for muon colliders. Parameters for this test have been explored in simulation and applied to experimental configurations using a wedge-shaped absorber. A polyethylene wedge absorber has been fabricated and placed in MICE and…
A high-energy muon collider scenario requires a final cooling system that reduces transverse emittance to ~25 microns (normalized) while allowing longitudinal emittance increase. Ionization cooling using high-field solenoids (or Li Lens) can reduce transverse emittances to ~100 microns in readily achievable configurations, confirmed by simulation. Passing these muon beams at ~100 MeV/c through cm-sized diamond wedges can reduce transverse emittances to ~25 microns, while increasing longitudinal emittances by a factor of ~25. Implementation will require optical matching of the exiting beam into…
The effect of the transverse self-force in a relativistic beam has been studied in the earlier paper of the author [1]. However, the analysis of [1] missed an important observation and has lead to an incorrect estimate of the emittance growth of the beam when it passes through a long bending magnet. Here we correct that analysis. In particular, we conclude that the emittance growth due to the transverse self-force in a long bend is always much smaller than the emittance growth due to the longitudinal coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) wake.
Generally, turn-to-turn power fluctuations of incoherent spontaneous synchrotron radiation in a storage ring depend on the 6D phase-space distribution of the electron bunch. In some cases, if only one parameter of the distribution is unknown, this parameter can be determined from the measured magnitude of these power fluctuations. In this Letter, we report an absolute measurement (no free parameters or calibration) of a small vertical emittance (5--15 nm rms) of a flat beam by this method, under conditions, when it is unresolvable by a conventional synchrotron light beam size monitor.
Emittance is a beam quality that is vital for many future applications of advanced accelerators, such as compact free-electron lasers and linear colliders. In this paper, we review the challenges of preserving the transverse emittance during acceleration, both inside and outside accelerator stages. Sources of emittance growth range from space charge and instabilities caused by transverse wakefields, which can occur in any advanced accelerator scheme regardless of medium or driver type, to sources more specific to plasma accelerators, such as mismatching, misalignment, ion motion, Coulomb scatt…
A new effect is presented, which changes the emittance during colliding-beam operation in circular colliders. If the initial transverse distribution is Gaussian, the collision probability is much higher for particles in the core of the beam than in the tails. When small-amplitude particles are removed, the remaining ones therefore have a larger transverse emittance. This effect, called core depletion, may cause a decrease in luminosity. An approximate analytic model is developed to study the effect and benchmarked against a multiparticle tracking simulation. Finally, the time evolution of the …
In its normal mode of operation the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator Facility uses a high charge (10-100 nC), short pulse (3-5 psec) drive bunch to excite high-gradient accelerating fields in various slow-wave structures. To generate this bunch, we designed a 1.5 cell, L-band, rf photocathode gun with an emittance compensating solenoid to give optimal performance at high-charge; it has recently completed commissioning. More recently, we have begun to investigate the possibility of using this gun in a high-brightness, low-charge operating mode, with charge equal to approximately 1 nC, for high-pre…
The transverse emittance of a charged particle beam is an important figure of merit for many accelerator applications, such as ultra-fast electron diffraction, free electron lasers and the operation of new compact accelerator concepts in general. One of the easiest to implement methods to determine the transverse emittance is the phase advance scan method using a focusing element and a screen. This method has been shown to work well in the thermal regime. In the space charge dominated laminar flow regime, however, the scheme becomes difficult to apply, because of the lack of a closed descripti…
Wedge absorbers are needed to obtain longitudinal cooling in ionization cooling. They also can be used to obtain emittance exchanges between longitudinal and transverse phase space. There can be large exchanges in emittance, even with single wedges. In the present note we explore the use of wedge absorbers in the MICE experiment to obtain transverse-longitudinal emittance exchanges within present and future operational conditions. The same wedge can be used to explore "direct" and "reverse" emittance exchange dynamics, where direct indicates a configuration that reduces momentum spread and rev…
Flat beams -- beams with asymmetric transverse emittances -- have important applications in novel light-source concepts, advanced-acceleration schemes and could possibly alleviate the need for damping rings in lepton colliders. Over the last decade, a flat-beam-generation technique based on the conversion of an angular-momentum-dominated beam was proposed and experimentally tested. In this paper we explore the production of compressed flat beams. We especially investigate and optimize the flat-beam transformation for beams with substantial fractional energy spread. We use as a simulation examp…
Crossing a horizontal nonlinear resonance is the approach that can be used to split a beam in several beamlets with the goal to perform multi-turn extraction from a circular particle accelerator. Such an approach has been successfully implemented in the CERN Proton Synchrotron and is used routinely for the production of high-intensity proton beams for fixed-target physics at the Super Proton Synchrotron. Recently, thanks to the deployment of diamond detectors, originally installed to monitor the beam losses at extraction, it has been possible to measure the horizontal beam emittance of the spl…
Photoinjectors are the main high brightness electron sources for X-ray free electron lasers (XFEL). Photoinjector emittance reduction is one of the key knobs for improving XFEL lasing, so precise emittance measurement is critical. It's well known that rms emittance is very sensitive to low intensity tails of particle distributions in the phase space, whose measurement depend on the signal to noise ratio (SNR) and image processing procedures. Such sensitivities make the interpretations of beam transverse brightness challenging, leading to different emittance definitions to reduce the impact of …
I describe a new scheme for selectively isolating high density low longitudinal emittance beam particles in a storage ring from the rest of the beam without emittance dilution. I discuss the general principle of the method, called longitudinal momentum mining, beam dynamics simulations and results of beam experiments. Multi-particle beam dynamics simulations applied to the Fermilab 8 GeV Recycler (a storage ring) convincingly validate the concepts and feasibility of the method, which I have demonstrated with beam experiments in the Recycler. The method presented here is the first of its kind.
We present the results of transverse emittance and longitudinal current profile measurements of high bunch charge (greater than or equal to 100 pC) beams produced in the DC gun-based Cornell Energy Recovery Linac Photoinjector. In particular, we show that the cathode thermal and core beam emittances dominate the final 95% and core emittance measured at 9-9.5 MeV. Additionally, we demonstrate excellent agreement between optimized 3D space charge simulations and measurement, and show that the quality of the transverse laser distribution limits the optimal simulated and measured emittances. These…
The production of electron bunches with low transverse emittance approaches the thermal emittance of the photocathode as various aberrations are corrected. Recently, the coupled transverse dynamics aberration was theoretically identified as a significant source of emittance growth and a corrector magnet was proposed for its elimination [D.H. Dowell, F. Zhou, and J. Schmerge, PRAB 21, 010101 (2018)]. This aberration arises when the beam acquires an asymmetric distribution that is then rotated with respect to the transverse reference axis thus introducing a correlation in the vertical and horizo…
The injection system of the China Spallation Neutron Source uses H- stripping and phase space painting method to fill large ring acceptance with the linac beam of small emittance. The emittance evolution, beam losses, and collimation efficiency during the injection procedures for different injection parameters, such as the injection emittances, starting injection time, twiss parameters and momentum spread, were studied, and then the optimized injection parameters was obtained. In addition, the phase space painting scheme which also affect the emittance evolution and beam losses were simulated …
Modern accelerator front ends almost exclusively include radio-frequency quadrupoles for initial capture and focusing of the low-energy beam. Dynamics in the RFQ define the longitudinal bunch parameters. Simulation of the SNS RFQ with PARMTEQ seeded with a realistic LEBT distribution produces a 2.5 MeV, 40 mA H- beam with root-mean-square emittance of 130 deg-keV. In measurement, a detailed characterization of the longitudinal phase space is made, including a novel study of the dependence of longitudinal emittance on transverse coordinates. This work introduces a new virtual slit technique tha…
The proton cycle in the SIS100 synchrotron is designed to deliver single bunches with $2\times10^{13}$ particles at 29 GeV. During the cycle beam dynamics near transition energy have to be analyzed to avoid a significant emittance blow-up. In the past two scenarios were discussed, a shift of the transition energy above the extraction energy and a transition crossing with a so called $γ_\mathrm{t}$ jump. To estimate the possible emittance blow-up in both scenarios, longitudinal simulations are presented including the Johnsen effect based on the second order phase slip factor and the effect of l…
We show that the difference resonance driven by the space charge pseudo-octupole of high-intensity beams not only couples the beam core emittances; it can also lead to emittance exchange in the beam halo, which is of relevance for beam loss in high intensity accelerators. With reference to linear accelerators the "main resonance" kz/kxy =1 (corresponding to the Montague resonance 2Qx-2Qy=0 in circular accelerators) may lead to such a coupling and transfer of halo between planes. Coupling of transverse halo into the longitudinal plane - or vice versa - can occur even if the core (rms) emittance…
Motivated by the emittance requirements for future light sources, we show how longitudinal-transverse correlations can be introduced to create beams with large emittance asymmetry. This concept generalizes a key aspect of a Flat Beam Transform, which introduces initial correlations among the transverse planes, to systems with initial longitudinal-transverse correlations. We present an eigen-emittance formalism to analyze such systems. We illustrate the approach by analyzing an electron beam emitted from a photoinjector utilizing a laser with a tilted pulse front. This approach can be used to d…
A coasting hadron beam with an elliptical transverse profile, uniform charge density, and small transverse four-dimensional (4D) emittance could improve accelerator performance in several contexts. A phase space painting method to generate such a distribution is being tested in the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) accumulator ring. A critical component of these efforts is to measure the 4D emittance of the beam during accumulation. The 4D emittance can be reconstructed from measured beam profiles in two ways: in the multi-optics method, the optics between a reconstruction and measurement locati…
Phase-space partitioning offers an attractive path for the precise tailoring of complex dynamical systems. In Beam Physics, the proposed approach involves (i) producing beams with cross-plane correlations to control kinematical invariants known as eigenemittances and (ii) mapping them to invariants of motion associated with given degrees of freedom via a decoupling transformation. Here we report on the direct experimental demonstration of the mapping of eigenemittances to transverse emittances for an electron beam. Measured phase space density confirms the generation of beams with asymmetric t…
We report the development of a multileaf collimator (MLC) for charged particle beams, based on independently actuated tungsten strips which can selectively scatter unwanted particles. The MLC is used in conjunction with an emittance exchange beamline to rapidly generate highly variable longitudinal bunch profiles. The developed MLC consists of 40 independent leaves that are 2 mm wide and can move up to 10 mm, and operates in an ultra high vacuum environment, enabled by novel features such as magnetically coupled actuation. An experiment at the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator, which previously us…
Ionization cooling in a straight beamline reduces the transverse emittance of a beam, and has little effect on the longitudinal emittance (generally, in fact, it increases the longitudinal emittance). Once the beamline bends, the introduction of dispersion creates a coupling between the transverse and longitudinal planes. If this coupling is handled properly, one can achieve cooling in all three phase space planes. This is usually done by placing a wedge-shaped absorber in a region where there is dispersion. I will demonstrate using an eigenvalue analysis that there are other configurations of…
Next generation accelerators will require a high current, low emittance beam with a low energy spread. Such accelerators will employ advanced beam conditioning systems such as emittance exchangers to manipulate high brightness beams. One of the goals of the Fermilab A0 photoinjector is to investigate the transverse to longitudinal emittance exchange principle. Coherent synchrotron radiation could limit high current operation of the emittance exchanger. In this paper, we report on the preliminary experimental and simulation study of the coherent synchroton radiation (CSR) in the emittance excha…
