In this note we present an algorithm to generate new Schr\" odinger type equations explicitly solvable in terms of orthogonal polynomials or associated special functions.
We systematically describe and classify 1-dimensional Schrödinger equations that can be solved in terms of hypergeometric type functions. Beside the well-known families, we explicitly describe 2 new classes of exactly solvable Schrödinger equations that can be reduced to the Hermite equation.
By using the point canonical transformation approach in a manner distinct from previous ones, we generate some new exactly solvable or quasi-exactly solvable potentials for the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation with a position-dependent effective mass. In the latter case, SUSYQM techniques provide us with some additional new potentials.
The Fokker-Planck equation associated with the two - dimensional stationary Schrödinger equation has the conservation low form that yields a pair of potential equations. The special form of Darboux transformation of the potential equations system is considered. As the potential variable is a nonlocal variable for the Schrödinger equation that provides the nonlocal Darboux transformation for the Schrödinger equation. This nonlocal transformation is applied for obtaining of the exactly solvable two - dimensional stationary Schrödinger equations. The examples of exactly solvable two - dimensional…
We study in detail the relationship between the Tavis-Cummings Hamiltonian of quantum optics and a family of quasi-exactly solvable Schrödinger equations. The connection between them is stablished through the biconfluent Heun equation. We found that each invariant $n$-dimensional subspace of Tavis-Cummings Hamiltonian corresponds either to $n$ potentials, each with one known solution, or to one potential with $n$-known solutions. Among these Schrödinger potentials appear the quarkonium and the sextic oscillator.
We present a class of confining potentials which allow one to reduce the one-dimensional Schroodinger equation to a named equation of mathematical physics, namely either Bessel's or Whittaker's differential equation. In all cases, we provide closed form expressions for both the symmetric and antisymmetric wavefunction solutions, each along with an associated transcendental equation for allowed eigenvalues. The class of potentials considered contains an example of both cusp-like single wells and a double-well.
The main contribution of our paper is to give a partial classification of the quasi-exactly solvable Lie algebras of first order differential operators in three variables, and to show how this can be applied to the construction of new quasi-exactly solvable Schrödinger operators in three dimensions.
A novel exactly solvable Schrödinger equation with a position-dependent mass (PDM) describing a Coulomb problem in $D$ dimensions is obtained by extending the known duality relating the quantum $d$-dimensional oscillator and $D$-dimensional Coulomb problems in Euclidean spaces for $D = (d+2)/2$. As an intermediate step, a mapping between a quantum $d$-dimensional nonlinear oscillator of Mathews-Lakshmanan type (or oscillator in a space of constant curvature) and a quantum $D$-dimensional Coulomb-like problem in a space of nonconstant curvature is derived. It is finally reinterpreted in a PDM b…
An exactly solvable position-dependent mass Schrödinger equation in two dimensions, depicting a particle moving in a semi-infinite layer, is re-examined in the light of recent theories describing superintegrable two-dimensional systems with integrals of motion that are quadratic functions of the momenta. To get the energy spectrum a quadratic algebra approach is used together with a realization in terms of deformed parafermionic oscillator operators. In this process, the importance of supplementing algebraic considerations with a proper treatment of boundary conditions for selecting physical w…
We apply solutions of Heun's general equation to the stationary Schrödinger equation with two quasi-exactly solvable elliptic potentials which depend on a real parameter $\ell$. We get finite-series solutions from power series expansions for Heun's equation if $\ell$ is an integer, except if $\ell=-1,-2,-3,-4$. If $\ell\neq-5/2$ is half an odd integer, we obtain finite series in terms of hypergeometric functions. The quasi-exact solvability is expressed by the finite series solutions. However, for any value of $\ell$, we find infinite-series eigenfunctions which are convergent and bounded for …
We construct a Madelung fluid model with specific time variable parameters as dissipative quantum fluid and linearize it in terms of Schrodinger equation with time dependent parameters. It allows us to find exact solutions of the nonlinear Madelung system in terms of solutions of the Schrodinger equation and the corresponding classical linear ODE with variable frequency and damping. For the complex velocity field the Madelung system takes the form of a nonlinear complex Schrodinger-Burgers equation, for which we obtain exact solutions using complex Cole-Hopf transformation. In particular, we d…
Motivated by the interest in non-relativistic quantum mechanics for determining exact solutions to the Schrodinger equation we give two potentials that are conditionally exactly solvable. The two potentials are partner potentials and we obtain that each linearly independent solution of the Schrodinger equation includes two hypergeometric functions. Furthermore we calculate their reflection and transmission amplitudes. Finally we discuss some additional properties of these potentials.
Different cases of sequences of the Laplace Transformations for the 2D Schrodinger operator in the periodic magnetic field and electric potential are considered. They lead to the exactly solvable operators with nonstandard spectral properties including the double-periodic operators with algebraic Fermi surface known from the periodic soliton theory. Two appendices are added. In the Appendix I (the author - S. Novikov) two discretizations of the 2D operators and Laplace transformations are constructed. In the Appendix II (the authors - S. Novikov and I. Taimanov) some nonstandard 1D discrete op…
We consider an exactly solvable discretisation of the radial Schrödinger equation of the hydrogen atom with l=0. We first examine direct solutions of the finite difference equation and remark that the solutions can be analytically continued entire functions. A recursive expression for the coefficients in the solution is obtained. The next step is to identify the related three-term recursion relation for Pollaczek polynomials. One-to-one correspondence between the spectral and position representations facilitates the evaluation of Pollaczek polynomials corresponding to the discrete spectrum. Fi…
Quasi-Exactly Solvable Schrödinger Equations occupy an intermediate place between exactly-solvable (e.g. the harmonic oscillator and Coulomb problems etc) and non-solvable ones. Their major property is an explicit knowledge of several eigenstates while the remaining ones are unknown. Many of these problems are of the anharmonic oscillator type with a special type of anharmonicity. The Hamiltonians of quasi-exactly-solvable problems are characterized by the existence of a hidden algebraic structure but do not have any hidden symmetry properties. In particular, all known one-dimensional (quasi)-…
We review an exact WKB resolution method for the stationary 1D Schrödinger equation with a general polynomial potential. This contribution covers already published material: we supply a commented summary here, stressing a few aspects which were less highlighted before. As some of our earlier papers needed later corrections, we also recapitulate these here in footnotes in the bibliography. The latter, not meant to be exhaustive, focuses on narrowly relevant works plus some broader ones that do offer more extensive bibliographies.
For applications to quasi-exactly solvable Schrödinger equations in quantum mechanics, we consider the general conditions that have to be satisfied by the coefficients of a second-order differential equation with at most $k+1$ singular points in order that this equation has particular solutions that are $n$th-degree polynomials. In a first approach, we show that such conditions involve $k-2$ integration constants, which satisfy a system of linear equations whose coefficients can be written in terms of elementary symmetric polynomials in the polynomial solution roots whenver such roots are all …
For the two-dimensional Schrödinger equation, the general form of the point transformations such that the result can be interpreted as a Schrödinger equation with effective (i.e. position dependent) mass is studied. A wide class of such models with different forms of mass function is obtained in this way. Starting from the solvable two-dimensional model, the variety of solvable partner models with effective mass can be built. Several illustrating examples not amenable to the conventional separation of variables are given.
We turn back to the well known problem of interpretation of the Schrodinger operator with the pseudopotential being the first derivative of the Dirac function. We show that the problem in its conventional formulation contains hidden parameters and the choice of the proper selfadjoint operator is ambiguously determined. We study the asymptotic behavior of spectra and eigenvectors of the Hamiltonians with increasing smooth potentials perturbed by short-range potentials. Appropriate solvable models are constructed and the corresponding approximation theorems are proved. We introduce the concepts …
Using the disconjugacy properties of the Schrödinger equation, it is possible to develop a new type of generalized SUSY QM partnership which allows to generate new solvable rational extensions for translationally shape invariant potentials having a finite bound state spectrum. For this we prolong the dispersion relation relating the energy to the quantum number out of the physical domain until a disconjugacy sector. The prolonged excited states Riccati-Schrödinger (RS) functions are used to build Darboux-Bäcklund transforms which give regular isospectral extensions of the initial potential. We…
We consider vector Non-linear Schrodinger Equation(NLSE) with balanced loss-gain(BLG), linear coupling(LC) and a general form of cubic nonlinearity. We use a non-unitary transformation to show that the system can be exactly mapped to the same equation without the BLG and LC, and with a modified time-modulated nonlinear interaction. The nonlinear term remains invariant, while BLG and LC are removed completely, for the special case of a pseudo-unitary transformation. The mapping is generic and may be used to construct exactly solvable autonomous as well as non-autonomous vector NLSE with BLG. We…
We show that it is possible to generate an infinite set of solvable rational extensions from every exceptional first category translationally shape invariant potential. This is made by using Darboux-Bäcklund transformations based on unphysical regular Riccati-Schrödinger functions which are obtained from specific symmetries associated to the considered family of potentials.
We find exact solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for a family of quasi-exactly solvable time-dependent potentials by means of non-unitary gauge transformations.
We study the uniqueness question for two inverse problems on graphs. Both problems consist in finding (possibly complex) edge or nodal based quantities from boundary measurements of solutions to the Dirichlet problem associated with a weighted graph Laplacian plus a diagonal perturbation. The weights can be thought of as a discrete conductivity and the diagonal perturbation as a discrete Schrödinger potential. We use a discrete analogue to the complex geometric optics approach to show that if the linearized problem is solvable about some conductivity (or Schrödinger potential) then the lineari…
Combining recent results on rational solutions of the Riccati-Schrödinger equations for shape invariant potentials to the scheme developed by Fellows and Smith in the case of the one dimensional harmonic oscillator, we show that it is possible to generate an infinite set of solvable rational extensions for every translationally shape invariant potential of the second category.
Combining recent results on rational solutions of the Riccati-Schrödinger equations for shape invariant potentials to the finite difference Bäcklund algorithm and specific symmetries of the isotonic potential, we show that it is possible to generate the three infinite sets (L1, L2 and L3 families) of regular rational solvable extensions of this potential in a very direct and transparent way.
By exploiting the hidden algebraic structure of the Schrodinger Hamiltonian, namely the sl(2), we propose a unified approach of generating both exactly solvable and quasi-exactly solvable quantum potentials. We obtain, in this way, two new classes of quasi-exactly solvable systems one of which is of periodic type while the other hyperbolic.
Based on a method that produces the solutions to the Schrodinger equations of partner potentials, we give two conditionally exactly solvable partner potentials of exponential type defined on the half line. These potentials are multiplicative shape invariant and each of their linearly independent solution includes a sum of two hypergeometric functions. Furthermore we calculate the scattering amplitudes and study some of their properties.
Orthogonal Polynomials in Quantum Mechanics. Exact solutions of the Schrodinger equation with the hyperbolic Scarf potential (Scarf II) in terms of Romanovski polynomials. Among the applications included is the solution of the problem of an electron within a particular potential leading to the definition of new non-spherical angular functions.
The nonlocal Darboux transformation of the two - dimensional stationary Schrödinger equation is considered and its relation to the Moutard transformation is established. It is shown that a special case of the nonlocal Darboux transformation provides the Moutard transformation. New examples of solvable two - dimensional stationary Schrödinger operators with smooth potentials are obtained as an application of the nonlocal Darboux transformation.
In Part I of this series of papers we have described a general formalism to compute the vacuum effects of a scalar field via local (or global) zeta regularization. In the present Part II we exemplify the general formalism in a number of cases which can be solved explicitly by analytical means. More in detail we deal with configurations involving parallel or perpendicular planes and we also discuss the case of a three-dimensional wedge.
We consider two quasi-exactly solvable problems in one dimension for which the Schrödinger equation can be converted to Heun's equation. We show that in neither case the Bender-Dunne polynomials form an orthogonal set. Using the anti-isopectral transformation we also discover a new quasi-exactly solvable problem and show that even in this case the polynomials do not form an orthogonal set.
The paper presents a detailed analysis of the so-called "Double-Root Tangent-Polynomial" (DRtTP) reduction of the regular Gauss-reference (r-GRef) potential exactly solvable by hypergeometric functions. It is shown that the Dutt-Khare-Varshni (DKV) potential represents a remarkable particular case when the DRtTP r-GRef becomes expressible in terms of elementary functions. This is also true for its basic single- or double-step SUSY partners which are either exactly or conditionally exactly quantized by Heun polynomials (Hp-EQ or Hp-CEQ, respectively).
We solve the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation for the bound states of two potential models with a rich structure as shown by their "spectral phase diagram". These potentials do not belong to the well-known class of exactly solvable problems. The solutions are finite series of square integrable functions written in terms of the Jacobi polynomials.
A one-dimensional Schrödinger equation with position-dependent effective mass in the kinetic energy operator is studied in the framework of an $so(2,1)$ algebra. New mass-deformed versions of Scarf II, Morse and generalized Pöschl-Teller potentials are obtained. Consistency with an intertwining condition is pointed out.
We show that the thermodynamics of the focusing cubic discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation are exactly solvable in dimensions three and higher. A number of explicit formulas are derived.
This work continues to study the set of quasi exactly solvable potentials related to the Eckart, Hultén, Rosen-Morse, Coulomb and the harmonic oscillator potentials. We solve the Schrödinger equation for each potential and obtain the eigenvalues and eigenstates in terms of the orthogonal polynomials. We present a unified approach to obtain the potentials from each other by suitable change of variables.
We study the Sturm--Liouville operator $$ T(\varepsilon)y=-\frac{1}{\varepsilon}y''+ p(x)y, $$ with concrete $\mathcal{PT}$-- symmetric potential $p(x) = ix$ and Dirichlet boundary conditions on the segment $[-1,1]$. Here $\varepsilon \in (0, \infty)$ is a physical parameter. We explicitly describe a beautiful phenomenon of the eigenvalue behavior when $\varepsilon$ changes from $0$ to $\infty$. All the critical values of $\varepsilon$ which determine the eigenvalue dynamics, are found in terms of the special Airy functions.
In this paper we point out a close connection between the Darboux transformation and the group of point transformations which preserve the form of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE). In our main result, we prove that any pair of time-dependent real potentials related by a Darboux transformation for the TDSE may be transformed by a suitable point transformation into a pair of time-independent potentials related by a usual Darboux transformation for the stationary Schrödinger equation. Thus, any (real) potential solvable via a time-dependent Darboux transformation can alternatively b…
The quantum version of a non-linear oscillator, previouly analyzed at the classical level, is studied. This is a problem of quantization of a system with position-dependent mass of the form $m={(1+λx^2)}^{-1}$ and with a $\la$-dependent nonpolynomial rational potential. This $\la$-dependent system can be considered as a deformation of the harmonic oscillator in the sense that for $\la\to 0$ all the characteristics of the linear oscillator are recovered. Firstly, the $\la$-dependent Schrödinger equation is exactly solved as a Sturm-Liouville problem and the $\la$-dependent eigenenergies and eig…
The paper collates a complete list of nodeless regular almost-everywhere holomorphic (AEH) solutions for a subset of rational canonical Sturm-Liouville equations (RCSLEs) exactly quantized on a finite interval by classical Jacobi polynomials. The subset was constrained by the requirement that the appropriate Liouville transformation results in the Schrodinger equation on the line. The common remarkable feature of the selected nodeless solutions co-existent with the discrete energy spectrum is that they can be used as seed functions for multi-step 'canonical Liouville-Darboux transformations' (…
A transformation method is applied to the second order ordinary differential equation satisfied by orthogonal polynomials to construct a family of exactly solvable quantum systems in any arbitrary dimensional space. Using the properties of orthogonal polynomials, the method transforms polynomial differential equation to D-dimensional radial Schrodinger equation which facilitates construction of exactly solvable quantum systems. The method is also applied using associated Laguerre and Hypergeometric polynomials. The quantum systems generated from other polynomials are also briefly highlighted.
We consider an explicitly solvable model (formulated in the Riemannian geometry terms) for a stationary wave process in a specific thin domain with the Dirichlet boundary conditions on the boundary of the domain. The transition from the solutions of the scattering problem to the solutions of a problem on the limiting quantum graph is studied. We calculate the Lagrangian gluing conditions at vertices for the problem on the limiting graph. If the frequency of the incident wave is above the bottom of the absolutely continuous spectrum, the gluing conditions are formulated in terms of the scatteri…
We use the optimized trigonometric finite basis method to find energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the time-independent Schrodinger equation with high accuracy. We apply this method to the quartic anharmonic oscillator and the harmonic oscillator perturbed by a trigonometric anharmonic term as not exactly solvable cases and obtain the nearly exact solutions.
Various examples of exactly solvable `discrete' quantum mechanics are explored explicitly with emphasis on shape invariance, Heisenberg operator solutions, annihilation-creation operators, the dynamical symmetry algebras and coherent states. The eigenfunctions are the (q-)Askey-scheme of hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials satisfying difference equation versions of the Schrödinger equation. Various reductions (restrictions) of the symmetry algebra of the Askey-Wilson system are explored in detail.
In this paper, we generalize a previous relativistic $1+1$-dimensional model for two mass-less Dirac particles with relativistic contact interactions to the $N$-particle case. Our model is based on the notion of a multi-time wave function which, according to Dirac, is the central object in a relativistic multi-particle quantum theory in the Schrödinger picture. Consequently, we achieve a manifestly Lorentz invariant formulation on configuration space-time. Our model is constructed to be compatible with antisymmetry and probability conservation in a relativistic sense. On the mathematical side,…

The main aim of this paper is the presentation of a new methodology to obtain Liouvillian solutions of stationary one dimensional Schrödinger equation with quasi-solvable polynomial potentials through the using of differential Galois theory and Gröbner basis. We illustrate these results by the computing of polynomial potentials of degree 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14. Moreover, we show an implementation in \textbf{Mathematica} for the decatic potential.
We present a new six-parameter family of potentials whose solutions are expressed in terms of the hypergeometric functions 3F2, 2F2 and 1F2. Both the scattering data and the bound states of these potentials are explicitly computed and the peculiar properties of the discrete spectrum are depicted in a suitable phase diagram. Our starting point is a third-order formal eigenvalue equation of the hypergeometric type (with a suitable solution known) which is transformed to the Schrödinger equation by applying the reduction of order technique as the crucial first step. The general preconditions allo…
In this paper, we study the Schrödinger equation with a new quasi-exactly solvable double-well potential. Exact expressions for the energies, the corresponding wave functions and the allowed values of the potential parameters are obtained using two different methods, the Bethe ansatz method and the Lie algebraic approach. Some numerical results are reported and it is shown that the results are in good agreement with each other and with those obtained previously via a different method.
We solve the non-stationary Schrodinger equation for several time-dependent Hamiltonians, such as the BCS Hamiltonian with an interaction strength inversely proportional to time, periodically driven BCS and linearly driven inhomogeneous Dicke models as well as various multi-level Landau-Zener tunneling models. The latter are Demkov-Osherov, bow-tie, and generalized bow-tie models. We show that these Landau-Zener problems and their certain interacting many-body generalizations map to Gaudin magnets in a magnetic field. Moreover, we demonstrate that the time-dependent Schrodinger equation for th…
In this work, we introduce a new realization of exactly-solvable time-dependent Hamiltonians based on the solutions of the fourth Painlevé and the Ermakov equations. The latter is achieved by introducing a shape-invariant condition between an unknown quantum invariant and a set of third-order intertwining operators with time-dependent coefficients. The new quantum invariant is constructed by adding a deformation term to the well-known parametric oscillator invariant. Such a deformation depends explicitly on time through the solutions of the Ermakov equation, which ensures the regularity of the…
A class of solvable (systems of) nonlinear evolution PDEs in multidimensional space is discussed. We focus on a rotation-invariant system of PDEs of Schrödinger type and on a relativistically-invariant system of PDEs of Klein-Gordon type. Isochronous variants of these evolution PDEs are also considered.
We consider exact and quasi-exact solvability of the one-dimensional Fokker-Planck equation based on the connection between the Fokker-Planck equation and the Schrödinger equation. A unified consideration of these two types of solvability is given from the viewpoint of prepotential together with Bethe ansatz equations. Quasi-exactly solvable Fokker-Planck equations related to the $sl(2)$-based systems in Turbiner's classification are listed. We also present one $sl(2)$-based example which is not listed in Turbiner's scheme.
