We present first principles calculations of the exchange interactions between magnetic impurities deposited on (001), (110) and (111) surfaces of Cu and Au and analyze them, in particular, in the asymptotic regime. For the (110) and the (111) surfaces we demonstrate that the interaction shows an oscillatory behavior as a function of the distance, R, of the impurities and that the amplitude of the oscillations decays as 1/R^2. Furthermore, the frequency of the oscillations is closely related to the length of the Fermi vector of the surface states existing on these surfaces. Due to the asymmetry of the the surface states' dispersion, the frequency of the oscillations becomes also asymmetric on the (110) surfaces, while on the Au(111) surface two distinct frequencies are found in the oscillations as a consequence of the Bychkov-Rashba splitting of the surface states. Remarkably, no long range oscillations of the exchange interaction are observed for the (001) surfaces where the surface states are unoccupied. When burying the impurities beneath the surface layer, oscillations mediated by the bulk states become visible.
Quantum size effects in Pb layers with absorbed Kondo adatoms: Determination of the exchange coupling constant
本文研究了酞菁锰(MnPc)吸附在Si衬底上的Pb层上的磁相互作用。我们进行了从头计算的状态密度和近藤温度的函数的铅单层的数量。与实验数据的比较[Phys. Rev. Lett. 99,256601(2007)]然后允许我们确定吸附分子的自旋和Pb主体的自旋之间的交换耦合常数J。这种方法产生了一个通用的和可靠的方法来获得J,通过结合实验和数值计算结果。
We propose a reversible mechanism for switching Heisenberg-type exchange interactions between deposited transition metal adatoms from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic. Using first-principles calculations, we show that this mechanism can be realized for cobalt atoms on the surface of black phosphorus by making use of electrically-controlled orbital repopulation, as recently demonstrated by scanning probe techniques [Nat. Commun. 9, 3904 (2018)]. We find that field-induced repopulation not only affects the spin state, but also causes considerable modification of exchange interaction between ad…
Conventional and Acoustic Surface Plasmons on Noble Metal Surfaces: A Time-dependent Density Functional Theory Study
Coherent control of individual atomic and molecular spins on surfaces has recently been demonstrated by using electron spin resonance (ESR) in a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). Here we present a combined experimental and modeling study of the ESR of a single hydrogenated Ti atom that is exchange-coupled to a Fe adatom located in 0.6-0.8 nm away. Continuous wave and pulsed ESR of the Ti spin showed a Rabi rate with two contributions, one from the tip and the other from the Fe, whose spin interactions with Ti were modulated by the radio-frequency electric field. The Fe contribution is compa…
Magnetic adatoms on a superconducting substrate undergo a quantum phase transition as their exchange coupling to the conduction electrons increases. For quantum spins, this transition is accompanied by screening of the adatom spin. Here, we explore the consequences of this screening for the phase diagrams and subgap excitation spectra of dimers of magnetic adatoms coupled by hybridization of their Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states and spin-spin interactions. We specifically account for higher spins, single-ion anisotropy, Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida coupling, and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions rele…
Magnetic adatoms on surfaces are exchange coupled to their environment, inducing fast relaxation of excited spin states and decoherence. These interactions can be suppressed by inserting decoupling layers between the magnetic adsorbate and the metallic substrate. Using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we investigate the magnetic properties of single Fe atoms on Au(111) covered by a monolayer of MoS$_2$ and explore the influence of the moiré structure on the spin excitation spectra. Fe adatoms absorbed at minima of the moiré structure exhibit almost pure inelastic…
Plasmonic nanojunctions, consisting of adjacent metal structures with nanometre gaps, can support localised plasmon resonances that boost light matter interactions and concentrate electromagnetic fields at the nanoscale. In this regime, the optical response of the system is governed by poorly understood dynamical phenomena at the frontier between the bulk, molecular and atomic scales. Here, we report ubiquitous spectral fluctuations in the intrinsic light emission from photo-excited gold nanojunctions, which we attribute to the light-induced formation of domain boundaries and quantum-confined …
Inducing a robust long-range magnetic order in diamagnetic graphene remains a challenge. While nitrogen-doped graphene is reported to be a promising candidate, the corresponding exchange mechanism endures unclear and is essential to tune further and manipulate magnetism. Within the first-principles calculations, we systematically investigate the local moment formation and the concurrent interaction between various defect complexes. The importance of adatom diffusion on the differential defect abundance is discussed. The individual nitrogen complexes that contribute toward itinerant and a local…
Hybrid density functionals replace a fraction of an underlying generalized-gradient approximation (GGA) exchange description with a Fock-exchange component. Range-separated hybrids (RSHs) also effectively screen the Fock-exchange component and thus open the door for characterizations of metals and adsorption at metal surfaces. The RSHs are traditionally based on a robust GGA, such as PBE [PRL $\textbf{77}$, 3865 (1996)], for example, as implemented in the HSE design [JPC $\textbf{118}$, 8207 (2003)]. Here we define a RSH extension to the van der Waals density functional (vdW-DF) method [ROPP $…
A theoretical study is presented of the effect of an in-plane magnetic exchange field on the band structure of centrosymmetric films of noble metals and topological insulators. Based on an ab initio relativistic $\mathbf{k}\cdot\mathbf{p}$ theory, a minimal effective model is developed that describes two coupled copies of a Rashba or Dirac electronic system residing at the opposite surfaces of the film. The coupling leads to a structural gap at $\barΓ$ and causes an exotic redistribution of the spin density in the film when the exchange field is introduced. We apply the model to a nineteen-lay…
We study odd-parity nematic superconductivity in doped topological insulators in presence of surface magnetic impurities. The peculiar surface subgap spectrum, characterized by a Majorana flatband, nodal cones and the surface states of the parent topological insulator, gives rise to an overall ferromagnetic RKKY interactions between the surface impurities. An additional coupling between the impurities and a preemptive chiral order parameter promote a surface time-reversal symmetry breaking solution at the surface of the system. We discuss the relevant scenarios and suggest to engineer surface …
