In the Integer Quadratic Programming problem input is an n*n integer matrix Q, an m*n integer matrix A and an m-dimensional integer vector b. The task is to find a vector x in Z^n, minimizing x^TQx, subject to Ax <= b. We give a fixed parameter tractable algorithm for Integer Quadratic Programming parameterized by n+a. Here a is the largest absolute value of an entry of Q and A. As an application of our main result we show that Optimal Linear Arrangement is fixed parameter tractable parameterized by the size of the smallest vertex cover of the input graph. This resolves an open problem from th…
The Integer Programming Problem (IP) for a polytope P \subseteq R^n is to find an integer point in P or decide that P is integer free. We give an algorithm for an approximate version of this problem, which correctly decides whether P contains an integer point or whether a (1+\eps) scaling of P around its barycenter is integer free in time O(1/\eps^2)^n. We reduce this approximate IP question to an approximate Closest Vector Problem (CVP) in a "near-symmetric" semi-norm, which we solve via a sieving technique first developed by Ajtai, Kumar, and Sivakumar (STOC 2001). Our main technical contrib…
Kondo et al. (DS 2014) proposed methods for computing distances between unordered rooted trees by transforming an instance of the distance computing problem into an instance of the integer programming problem. They showed that the tree edit distance, segmental distance, and bottom-up segmental distance problem can be respectively transformed into an integer program which has $O(nm)$ variables and $O(n^2m^2)$ constraints, where $n$ and $m$ are the number of nodes of input trees. In this work, we propose new integer programming formulations for these three distances and the bottom-up distance by…
Protein threading is a method of computational protein structure prediction used for protein sequences which have the same fold as proteins of known structures but do not have homologous proteins with known structure. The most popular algorithm is based on linear integer programming. In this paper, we consider methods based on nonlinear integer programming. Actually, the existing linear integer programming is directly linearized from the original quadratic integer programming. We then develop corresponding efficient algorithms.
Packing and vehicle routing problems play an important role in the area of supply chain management. In this paper, we introduce a non-linear knapsack problem that occurs when packing items along a fixed route and taking into account travel time. We investigate constrained and unconstrained versions of the problem and show that both are NP-hard. In order to solve the problems, we provide a pre-processing scheme as well as exact and approximate mixed integer programming (MIP) solutions. Our experimental results show the effectiveness of the MIP solutions and in particular point out that the appr…
We provide a complexity classification of four variants of robust integer programming when the underlying Graver basis is given. We discuss applications to robust multicommodity flows and multidimensional transportation, and describe an effective parametrization of robust integer programming.
We address the Interval Data Min-Max Regret 0-1 Integer Linear Programming problem (MMR-ILP), a variant of the 0-1 Integer Linear Programming problem where the objective function coefficients are uncertain. We solve MMR-ILP using a Benders-like Decomposition Algorithm and two metaheuristics for min-max regret problems with interval data. Computational experiments developed on variations of MIPLIB instances show that the heuristics obtain good results in a reasonable computational time when compared to the Benders-like Decomposition algorithm.
We give an exact algorithm for the 0-1 Integer Linear Programming problem with a linear number of constraints that improves over exhaustive search by an exponential factor. Specifically, our algorithm runs in time $2^{(1-\text{poly}(1/c))n}$ where n is the number of variables and cn is the number of constraints. The key idea for the algorithm is a reduction to the Vector Domination problem and a new algorithm for that subproblem.
We overview our recently introduced theory of n-fold integer programming which enables the polynomial time solution of fundamental linear and nonlinear integer programming problems in variable dimension. We demonstrate its power by obtaining the first polynomial time algorithms in several application areas including multicommodity flows and privacy in statistical databases.
In the last decade, the power of the state-of-the-art SAT and Integer Programming solvers has dramatically increased. They implement many new techniques and heuristics and since any NP problem can be converted to SAT or ILP instance, we could take advantage of these techniques in general by converting the instance of NP problem to SAT formula or Integer program. A problem we consider, in this proof of concept, is finding a largest clique in a graph. We ran several experiments on large random graphs and compared 3 approaches: Optimised backtrack solution, Translation to SAT and Translation to I…
The Johnson-Lindenstrauss lemma allows dimension reduction on real vectors with low distortion on their pairwise Euclidean distances. This result is often used in algorithms such as $k$-means or $k$ nearest neighbours since they only use Euclidean distances, and has sometimes been used in optimization algorithms involving the minimization of Euclidean distances. In this paper we introduce a first attempt at using this lemma in the context of feasibility problems in linear and integer programming, which cannot be expressed only in function of Euclidean distances.
We consider the NP-hard problem of minimizing a convex quadratic function over the integer lattice ${\bf Z}^n$. We present a simple semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation for obtaining a nontrivial lower bound on the optimal value of the problem. By interpreting the solution to the SDP relaxation probabilistically, we obtain a randomized algorithm for finding good suboptimal solutions, and thus an upper bound on the optimal value. The effectiveness of the method is shown for numerical problem instances of various sizes.
Integer Quadratic Programming is W[1]-Hard Parameterized by the Number of Variables
该研究证明以变量数为参数的整数二次规划是W[1]-困难的,据此在标准复杂性假设下,该问题无法在f(n)|I|^{O(1)}时间内求解。
The problem of packing boxes into a large box is often a part of a larger problem. For example in furniture supply chain applications, one needs to decide what trucks to use to transport furniture between production sites and distribution centers and stores, such that the furniture fits inside. Such problems are often formulated and sometimes solved using general-purpose integer programming solvers. This chapter studies the problem of identifying a compact formulation of the multi-dimensional packing component in a general instance of integer linear programming, reformulating it using the disc…
In bi-objective integer optimization the optimal result corresponds to a set of non-dominated solutions. We propose a generic bi-objective branch-and-bound algorithm that uses a problem-independent branching rule exploiting available integer solutions and takes advantage of integer objective coefficients. The developed algorithm is applied to bi-objective facility location problems, to the bi-objective set covering problem, as well as to the bi-objective team orienteering problem with time windows. In the latter case, lower bound sets are computed by means of column generation. Comparison to s…
Given an integer dimension K and a simple, undirected graph G with positive edge weights, the Distance Geometry Problem (DGP) aims to find a realization function mapping each vertex to a coordinate in K-dimensional space such that the distance between pairs of vertex coordinates is equal to the corresponding edge weights in G. The so-called discretization assumptions reduce the search space of the realization to a finite discrete one which can be explored via the branch-and-prune (BP) algorithm. Given a discretization vertex order in G, the BP algorithm constructs a binary tree where the nodes…

N-fold integer programming is a fundamental problem with a variety of natural applications in operations research and statistics. Moreover, it is universal and provides a new, variable-dimension, parametrization of all of integer programming. The fastest algorithm for $n$-fold integer programming predating the present article runs in time $O(n^{g(A)}L)$ with $L$ the binary length of the numerical part of the input and $g(A)$ the so-called Graver complexity of the bimatrix $A$ defining the system. In this article we provide a drastic improvement and establish an algorithm which runs in time $O(…
In the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP), a salesman wants to visit a set of cities and return home. There is a cost $c_{ij}$ of traveling from city $i$ to city $j$, which is the same in either direction for the Symmetric TSP. The objective is to visit each city exactly once, minimizing total travel costs. In the Graphical TSP, a city may be visited more than once, which may be necessary on a sparse graph. We present a new integer programming formulation for the Graphical TSP requiring only two classes of constraints that are either polynomial in number or polynomially separable, while addressi…
The 0-1 integer linear programming feasibility problem is an important NP-complete problem. This paper proposes a continuous-time dynamical system for solving that problem without getting trapped in non-solution local minima. First, the problem is transformed to an easier form in linear time. Then, we propose an "impulse algorithm" to escape from local traps and show its performance is better than randomization for escaping traps. Second, we present the time-to-solution distribution of the impulse algorithm and compare it with exhaustive search to see its advantages. Third, we show that the fr…
In this paper, we present FPT-algorithms for special cases of the shortest lattice vector, integer linear programming, and simplex width computation problems, when matrices included in the problems' formulations are near square. The parameter is the maximum absolute value of rank minors of the corresponding matrices. Additionally, we present FPT-algorithms with respect to the same parameter for the problems, when the matrices have no singular rank sub-matrices.
In this paper, we present a novel approach for solving a maintenance scheduling problem from the French electricity grid company RTE, as presented in the ROADEF 2020 challenge. Our approach combines constraint generation with a new family of cutting planes to address the nonconvexity of the problem. We provide mathematical proofs and separation algorithms for the cutting planes and study the practical impact of our approach on the challenge instances. This method is applicable to a wide range of problems involving the modeling of uncertainty, and is shown to improve results significantly on re…

The vertex coloring problem asks for the minimum number of colors that can be assigned to the vertices of a given graph such that for all vertices v the color of v is different from the color of any of its neighbors. The problem is NP-hard. Here, we introduce new integer linear programming formulations based on partial orderings. They have the advantage that they are as simple to work with as the classical assignment formulation, since they can be fed directly into a standard integer linear programming solver. We evaluate our new models using Gurobi and show that our new simple approach is a g…
We propose a stronger formulation of the precedence constraints and the station limits for the simple assembly line balancing problem. The linear relaxation of the improved integer program theoretically dominates all previous formulations using impulse variables, and produces solutions of significantly better quality in practice. The improved formulation can be used to strengthen related problems with similar restrictions. We demonstrate their effectiveness on the U-shaped assembly line balancing problem and on the bin packing problem with precedence constraints.

A long line of research on fixed parameter tractability of integer programming culminated with showing that integer programs with n variables and a constraint matrix with dual tree-depth d and largest entry D are solvable in time g(d,D)poly(n) for some function g. However, the dual tree-depth of a constraint matrix is not preserved by row operations, i.e., a given integer program can be equivalent to another with a smaller dual tree-depth, and thus does not reflect its geometric structure. We prove that the minimum dual tree-depth of a row-equivalent matrix is equal to the branch-depth of the …
Vertex colouring is a well-known problem in combinatorial optimisation, whose alternative integer programming formulations have recently attracted considerable attention. This paper briefly surveys seven known formulations of vertex colouring and introduces a formulation of vertex colouring using a suitable clique partition of the graph. This formulation is applicable in timetabling applications, where such a clique partition of the conflict graph is given implicitly. In contrast with some alternatives, the presented formulation can also be easily extended to accommodate complex performance in…
