We report on the low-frequency current fluctuations and electronic noise in thin-films made of bismuth selenide topological insulators. The films were prepared via the graphene-like mechanical exfoliation and used as the current conducting channels in the four- and two-contact devices. Analysis of the resistance dependence on the film thickness indicates that the surface contribution to conductance is dominant in our samples. It was established that the current fluctuations have the noise spectrum close to the pure 1/f in the frequency range from 1 to 10 kHz (f is the frequency). The relative noise amplitude S/I^2 for the examined films was increasing from ~5x10^-8 to 5x10^-6 (1/Hz) as the resistance of the channels varied from ~10^3 to 10^5 Ohms. The obtained noise data is important for understanding electron transport through the surface and volume of topological insulators, and proposed applications of this class of materials.
To determine the friction coefficient of graphene, micro-scale scratch tests are conducted on exfoliated and epitaxial graphene at ambient conditions. The experimental results show that the monolayer, bilayer, and trilayer graphene all yield friction coefficients of approximately 0.03. The friction coefficient of pristine graphene is less than that of disordered graphene, which is treated by oxygen plasma. Ramping force scratch tests are performed on graphene with various numbers of layers to determine the normal load required for the probe to penetrate graphene. A very low friction coefficien…
The modification of single layer graphene due to intense, picoseconds near-infrared laser pulses is investigated. We monitor the stable changes introduced to graphene upon photoexcitation using Raman spectroscopy. We find that photoexcitation leads to both a local increase in hole doping and a reduction in compressive strain. Possible explanations for these effects, due to photo-induced oxygenation and photo-induced buckling of the graphene, are discussed.
We have developed a method for depositing graphene monolayers and bilayers with minimum lateral dimensions of 2-10 nm by the mechanical exfoliation of graphite onto the Si(100)-2x1:H surface. Room temperature, ultra-high vacuum (UHV) tunnelling spectroscopy measurements of nanometer-sized single-layer graphene reveal a size dependent energy gap ranging from 0.1-1 eV. Furthermore, the number of graphene layers can be directly determined from scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) topographic contours. This atomistic study provides an experimental basis for probing the electronic structure of nano…
Liquid-phase exfoliation is one of the most promising routes for large scale production of multilayer graphene dispersions. These dispersions, which may be used in coatings, composites or paints, are believed to contain disorder-free graphene multilayers. Here we address the nature of defects in such samples obtained by liquid-phase exfoliation of graphite powder in N-methyl--2--pyrrolidone. Our Raman spectroscopy data challenges the assumption that these multilayers are free of bulk defects, revealing that defect localization strongly depends on the sonication time. For short ultrasound times…
Near infrared pump-probe spectroscopy has been used to measure the ultrafast dynamics of photoexcited charge carriers in monolayer and multilayer graphene. We observe two decay processes occurring on 100 fs and 2 ps timescales. The first is attributed to the rapid electron-phonon thermalisation in the system. The second timescale is found to be due to the slow decay of hot phonons. Using a simple theoretical model we calculate the hot phonon decay rate and show that it is significantly faster in monolayer flakes than in multilayer ones. In contrast to recent claims, we show that this enhanced …
High surface area graphene sheets were obtained by electrochemical exfoliation of graphite in an acid media under constant potential conditions. Filtration and centrifugation processes played an important role in order to obtain stable dispersions in water. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging revealed highly exfoliated crystalline samples of ~5(\mum). Raman, FT-IR and XPS spectroscopy further confirmed the high quality of the exfoliated material. The electrochemically exfoliated graphene (EEG) was decorated with gold nanoparticles (AuNP) using …
We report on "graphene-like" mechanical exfoliation of single-crystal Bi2Te3 films and thermoelectric characterization of the stacks of such films. Thermal conductivity of the resulting "pseudo-superlattices" was measured by the "hot disk" and "laser flash" techniques. The room-temperature in-plane (cross-plane) thermal conductivity of the stacks decreases by a factor of ~2.4 (3.5) as compared to bulk. The thermal conductivity reduction with preserved electrical properties leads to strong increase in the thermoelectric figure of merit. It is suggested that the film thinning to few-quintuples a…
Free-standing exfoliated monolayer graphene is an ultra-thin flexible membrane, which exhibits out of plane deformation or corrugation. In this paper, a technique is described to measure the band structure of such free-standing graphene by angle-resolved photoemission. Our results show that photoelectron coherence is limited by the crystal corrugation. However, by combining surface morphology measurements of the graphene roughness with angle-resolved photoemission, energy dependent quasiparticle lifetime and bandstructure measurements can be extracted. Our measurements rely on our development …
The deformation and fracture behaviour of one-atom-thick mechanically exfoliated graphene has been studied in detail. Monolayer graphene flakes with different lengths, widths and shapes were successfully prepared by mechanical exfoliation and deposited onto poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) beams. The fracture behaviour of the monolayer graphene was followed by deforming the PMMA beams. Through in-situ Raman mapping at different strain levels, the distributions of strain over the graphene flakes were determined from the shift of the graphene Raman 2D band. The failure mechanisms of the exfoliat…
We study the vibrational, magnetic and transport properties of Few Layer Graphene (FLG) using Raman and electron spin resonance spectroscopy and microwave conductivity measurements. FLG samples were produced using wet chemical exfoliation with different post-processing, namely ultrasound treatment, shear mixing, and magnetic stirring. Raman spectroscopy shows a low intensity D mode which attests a high sample quality. The G mode is present at $1580$ cm$^{-1}$ as expected for graphene. The 2D mode consists of 2 components with varying intensities among the different samples. This is assigned to…
We report the first experimental study of graphene transferred on \b{eta}-Si3N4(0001)/Si(111). Our work provides a comprehensive quantitative understanding of the physics of ultrathin Si3N4 as a gate dielectric for graphene-based devices. The Si3N4 film was grown on Si(111) under ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions and investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Subsequently, a graphene flake was deposited on top of it by a polymer-based transfer technique, and a Hall bar device was fabricated from the graphene flake. STM was employed again to study the graphene flake under UHV conditi…
Graphene is susceptible to morphological instabilities such as wrinkles and folds, which result from the imposition of thermo-mechanical stresses upon cooling from high temperatures and/ or under biaxial loading. A particular pattern encountered in CVD graphene is that of mosaic formation. Although it is understood that this pattern results from the severe biaxial compression upon cooling from high temperatures, it has not been possible to create such a complex pattern at room temperature by mechanical loading. Herein, we have managed by means of lateral wrinkling induced by tension and Euler …
The study of the nanomechanics of graphene $-$ and other 2D materials $-$ has led to the discovery of exciting new properties in 2D crystals, such as their remarkable in-plane stiffness and out of plane flexibility, as well as their unique frictional and wear properties at the nanoscale. Recently, nanomechanics of graphene has generated renovated interest for new findings on the pressure-induced chemical transformation of a few-layer thick epitaxial graphene into a new ultra-hard carbon phase, named diamene. In this work, by means of a machine learning technique, we provide a fast and efficien…
We have mapped the Dirac point in exfoliated monolayer and bilayer graphene using spatially resolved scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) measurements at low temperature. The Dirac point shifts in energy at different locations in graphene. However, a cross correlation with the topography shows no correlation indicating that topographic features such as ripples are not the primary source of the variation. Rather, we attribute the shift of the Dirac point to random charged impurities located near the graphene. Our findings emphasize the need to advance exfoliated graphene sample preparation to …
The discovery of graphene, a single layer of covalently bonded carbon atoms, has attracted intense interests. Initial studies using mechanically exfoliated graphene unveiled its remarkable electronic, mechanical and thermal properties. There has been a growing need and rapid development in large-area deposition of graphene film and its applications. Chemical vapour deposition on copper has emerged as one of the most promising methods in obtaining large-scale graphene films with quality comparable to exfoliated graphene. In this chapter, we review the synthesis and characterizations of graphene…
The sheet samples of thermally exfoliated graphite (TEG) carbon nanotubes (CNT) composites (TEG CNT cs) were obtained by persulphate oxidation using chemical (CO) and electrochemical (anode) oxidation (ECAO). Electron microscopy reveals multi layered structures of few layer graphene nanosheets with folded and tubular like fragments.Electron microscopy reveals multilayered structures of few layer graphene nanosheets with folded and tubular like fragments. The effective thermal diffusivity values were estimated by nonstationary photo-pyroelectric thermophysical characterization using the heat pu…
The properties of pristine, free-standing graphene monolayers prepared by mechanical exfoliation of graphite are investigated. The graphene monolayers, suspended over open trenches, are examined by means of spatially resolved Raman spectroscopy of the G-, D-, and 2D-phonon modes. The G-mode phonons exhibit reduced energies (1580 cm-1) and increased widths (14 cm-1) compared to the response of graphene monolayers supported on the SiO2 covered substrate. From analysis of the G-mode Raman spectra, we deduce that the free-standing graphene monolayers are essentially undoped, with an upper bound of…
Graphene has attracted much attention due to its interesting properties and potential applications. Chemical exfoliation methods have been developed to make graphene recently, aimed at large-scale assembly and applications such as composites and Li ion batteries. Although efficient, the chemical exfoliation methods involve oxidation of graphene and introduce defects in the as-made sheets. Hydrazine reduction at 100 has shown to partially restore the structure and conductance of graphite oxide. However, the reduced GO still shows strong defect peaks in Raman spectra with higher resistivity than…
Inkjet printable graphene inks are very attractive for applications in flexible and foldable electronics, such as wearable electronics and the Internet of Things. However, the ink preparation is still very time consuming as high concentrations can be achieved only with prolonged sonication (>24 hours) or with expensive setups. Here we demonstrate a water-based inkjet printable ink made from electrochemically exfoliated graphene. A printable and stable (> 1 month) ink with concentration of ~2.25 mg mL-1 was formulated in less than 5 hrs, using two successive steps: first exfoliation and dispers…
Bismuth telluride - Bi(2)Te(3)- and related compounds have recently attracted strong interest owing to the discovery of the topological insulator properties in many members of this family of materials. The few-quintuple films of these materials are particularly interesting from the physics point of view. We report results of the micro-Raman spectroscopy study of the "graphene-like" exfoliated few-quintuple layers of Bi(2)Te(3), Bi(2)Se(3) and Sb(2)Te(3). It is found that crystal symmetry breaking in few-quintuple films results in appearance of A1u-symmetry Raman peaks, which are not active in …
Monolayer graphene has been grown on crystallized Cu (111) films on standard oxidized Si 100 mm wafers. The monolayer graphene demonstrates high uniformity (>97% coverage), with immeasurable defects (>95% defect-negligible) across the entire wafer. Key to these results is the phase transition of evaporated copper films from amorphous to crystalline at the growth temperature as corroborated by X-ray diffraction and electron backscatter diffraction. Noticeably, phase transition of copper film is observed on technologically ubiquitous oxidized Si wafer where the oxide is a standard amorphous ther…
We have investigated the effect of ambient gas pressure (Argon) used during thermal exfoliation of graphite oxide on the number of graphene sheets in the resulting graphene. The ambience gas Ar pressures used are 80, 25, 1 atmosphere and 10-3 as well as 10-5 torr. We have found curious result that the number of graphene sheets in exfoliated graphene stack is dependent on the applied pressure for exfoliation of graphite oxide (GO). By lowering the exfoliation pressure, the numbers of sheets get reduced. The numbers of sheets in exfoliated graphene stack have been determined by Lorentzian fit of…
For the first time, the magnetic force microscopy (MFM) is used to characterize the mechanically-exfoliated single- and few-layer MoS2 and graphene nanosheets. By analysis of the phase and amplitude shifts, the magnetic response of MoS2 and graphene nanosheets exhibits the dependence on their layer number. However, the solution-processed single-layer MoS2 nanosheet shows the reverse magnetic signal to the mechanically-exfoliated one, and the graphene oxide nanosheet has not shown any detectable magnetic signal. Importantly, graphene and MoS2 flakes become nonmagnetic when they exceed a certain…
We report measurements of the electronic structure and surface morphology of exfoliated graphene on an insulating substrate using angle-resolved photoemission and low energy electron diffraction. Our results show that although exfoliated graphene is microscopically corrugated, the valence band retains a massless fermionic dispersion, with a Fermi velocity of ~10^6 m/s. We observe a close relationship between the morphology and electronic structure, which suggests that controlling the interaction between graphene and the supporting substrate is essential for graphene device applications.
Humidity sensing is important to a variety of technologies and industries, ranging from environmental and industrial monitoring to medical applications. Although humidity sensors abound, few available solutions are thin, transparent, compatible with large-area sensor production and flexible, and almost none are fast enough to perform human respiration monitoring through breath detection or real-time finger proximity monitoring via skin humidity sensing. This work describes chemiresistive graphene-based humidity sensors produced in few steps with facile liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) followed b…
A number of the charge-density-wave materials reveal a transition to the macroscopic quantum state around 200 K. We used graphene-like mechanical exfoliation of titanium diselenide crystals to prepare a set of films with different thicknesses. The transition temperature to the charge-density-wave state was determined via modification of Raman spectra of titanium diselenide films. It was established that the transition temperature can increase from its bulk value to ~240 K as the thickness of the van-der-Waals films reduces to the nanometer range. The obtained results are important for the prop…
We study the stability of various kinds of graphene samples under soft X-ray irradiation. Our results show that in single layer exfoliated graphene (a closer analogue to two dimensional material), the in-plane carbon-carbon bonds are unstable under X-ray irradiation, resulting in nanocrystalline structures. As the interaction along the third dimension increases by increasing the number of graphene layers or through the interaction with the substrate (epitaxial graphene), the effect of X-ray irradiation decreases and eventually becomes negligible for graphite and epitaxial graphene. Our results…
The observation of helical surface states in Bi-based three-dimensional topological insulators has been a challenge since their theoretical prediction. The main issue raises when the Fermi level shifts deep into the bulk conduction band due to the unintentional doping. This results in a metallic conduction of the bulk which dominates the transport measurements and hinders the probing of the surface states in these experiments. In this study, we investigate various strategies to reduce the residual doping in Bi-based topological insulators. Flakes of Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and Bi$_{1.5}$Sb$_{0.5}$Te$_{1.…
While graphene is a semi-metal, recently synthesized hydrogenated graphene called graphane, turns out to be an insulator. We have probed the metal insulator Transition in graphene-graphane system within the framework of density functional theory. By analysing the evolutionary trends in the electronic structure for fifteen different hydrogen concentrations on graphene, we unravel some novel features of this transition. As hydrogen coverage increases the semi-metal turns first into a metal, then transforms into an insulator. The metallic phase is spatially inhomogeneous in the sense, it contains…
We report a novel fabrication method of graphene Al2O3 gate insulators based on sputtering. Electrical performance of dual-gated mono- and bilayer exfoliated graphene devices is presented. Sputtered Al2O3 layers possess comparable quality to oxides obtained by atomic layer deposition (ALD) with respect to a high relative dielectric constant of about 8, as well as low-hysteresis performance and high breakdown voltage. We observe a moderate carrier mobility of about 1000 cm2/Vs in graphene and 350 cm2/Vs in its bilayer due to increased resonant scattering on atomic scale defects. Most likely thi…
Tunable and highly reproducible metal-insulator transitions have been observed in bilayer graphene upon thermal annealing at 400 K under high vacuum conditions. Before annealing, the sample is metallic in the whole temperature regime of study. Upon annealing, the conductivity changes from metallic to that of an insulator and the transition temperature is a function of annealing time. The pristine metallic state can be reinstated by exposing to air thereby inducing changes in the electronic properties by adsorbing water vapor, which makes graphene a technologically promising material for sensor…
The quantum Hall effect in a single-layer graphene sample is studied in strong magnetic fields up to 28 T. Our measurements reveal the existence of a metal- insulator transition from filling factor $ν=-2$ to $ν=0$. The value of the universal scaling exponent is found to be $κ=0.57 $ in graphene and therefore in a truly two-dimensional system. This value of $κ$ is in agreement with the accepted universal value for the plateau-insulator transitions in standard quasi two-dimensional electron and hole gases.
We report the successful growth of high-quality SrO films on highly-ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and single-layer graphene by molecular beam epitaxy. The SrO layers have (001) orientation as confirmed by x-ray diffraction (XRD) while atomic force microscopy measurements show continuous pinhole-free films having rms surface roughness of <1.5 Å. Transport measurements of exfoliated graphene after SrO deposition show a strong dependence between the Dirac point and Sr oxidation. Subsequently, the SrO is leveraged as a buffer layer for more complex oxide integration via the demonstration of (0…
We show that gated bilayer graphene hosts a strong topological insulator (TI) phase in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit (SO) coupling. We find that gated bilayer graphene under preserved time-reversal symmetry is a quantum valley Hall insulator for small Rashba SO coupling $λ_{\mathrm{R}}$, and transitions to a strong TI when $λ_{\mathrm{R}} > \sqrt{U^2+t_\bot^2}$, where $U$ and $t_\bot$ are respectively the interlayer potential and tunneling energy. Different from a conventional quantum spin Hall state, the edge modes of our strong TI phase exhibit both spin and valley filtering, and thus sh…
We report on first-principles calculations of spin-dependent properties in graphene induced by its interaction with a nearby magnetic insulator (Europium oxide, EuO). The magnetic proximity effect results in spin polarization of graphene $π$ orbitals by up to 24 %, together with large exchange splitting bandgap of about 36 meV. The position of the Dirac cone is further shown to depend strongly on the graphene-EuO interlayer. These findings point towards the possible engineering of spin gating by proximity effect at relatively high temperature, which stands as a hallmark for future all-spin inf…
Chirally stacked $N$-layer graphene is a semimetal with $\pm p^N$ band-touching at two nonequivalent corners in its Brillioun zone. We predict that an off-resonant circularly polarized light (CPL) drives chirally stacked $N$-layer graphene into a Floquet Chern Insulators (FCIs), a.k.a. quantum anomalous Hall insulators, with tunable high Chern number $C_F=\pm N$ and large gaps. A topological phase transition between such a FCI and a valley Hall (VH) insulator with high valley Chern number $C_v=\pm N$ induced by a voltage gate can be engineered by the parameters of the CPL and voltage gate. We …
We report on the phonon and thermal properties of thin films of tantalum diselenide (2H-TaSe2) obtained via the graphene-like mechanical exfoliation of crystals grown by chemical vapor transport. The ratio of the intensities of the Raman peak from the Si substrate and the E2g peak of TaSe2 presents a convenient metric for quantifying film thickness. The temperature coefficients for two main Raman peaks, A1g and E2g, are -0.013 and -0.0097 cm-1/oC, respectively. The Raman optothermal measurements indicate that the room temperature thermal conductivity in these films decreases from its bulk valu…
Graphene-based vertical heterostructures, particularly stacks incorporated with other layered materials, are promising for nanoelectronics. The stacking of two model Dirac materials, graphene and topological insulator, can considerably enlarge the family of van der Waals heterostructures. Despite well understanding of the two individual materials, the electron transport properties of a combined vertical heterojunction are still unknown. Here we show the experimental realization of a vertical heterojunction between Bi2Se3 nanoplate and monolayer graphene. At low temperatures, the electron trans…
We demonstrate the existence of Giant proximity magnetoresistance (PMR) effect in a graphene spin valve where spin polarization is induced by a nearby magnetic insulator. PMR calculations were performed for yttrium iron garnet (YIG), cobalt ferrite (CFO), and two europium chalcogenides EuO and EuS. We find a significant PMR (up to 100%) values defined as a relative change of graphene conductance with respect to parallel and antiparallel alignment of two proximity induced magnetic regions within graphene. Namely, for high Curie temperature (Tc) CFO and YIG insulators which are particularly impo…
The emergence of topological order in graphene is in great demand for the realization of quantum spin Hall states. Recently, it is theoretically proposed that the spin textures of surface states in topological insulator can be directly transferred to graphene by means of proximity effect. Here we report the observations of the topological proximity effect in the graphene-topological insulator Bi2Se3 heterojunctions via magnetotransport measurements. The coupling between the p_z orbitals of graphene and the p orbitals of surface states on the Bi2Se3 bottom surface can be enhanced by applying pe…
Here we show, with simultaneous transport and photoemission measurements, that the graphene terminated SiC(0001) surface undergoes a metal-insulator transition (MIT) upon dosingwith small amounts of atomic hydrogen. We find the room temperature resistance increases by about 4 orders of magnitude, a transition accompanied by anomalies in the momentum-resolved spectral function including a non-Fermi Liquid behaviour and a breakdown of the quasiparticle picture. These effects are discussed in terms of a possible transition to a strongly (Anderson) localized ground state.
We report a systematic first-principles investigation of the influence of different magnetic insulators on the magnetic proximity effect induced in graphene. Four different magnetic insulators are considered: two ferromagnetic europium chalcogenides namely EuO and EuS and two ferrimagnetic insulators yttrium iron garnet (YIG) and cobalt ferrite (CFO). The obtained exchange-splitting varies from tens to hundreds of meV. We also find an electron doping induced by YIG and europium chalcogenides substrates, that shift the Fermi level up to 0.78 eV and 1.3 eV respectively, whereas hole doping up to…
Heterostructures of Dirac materials such as graphene and topological insulators provide interesting platforms to explore exotic quantum states of electrons in solids. Here we study the electronic structure of graphene-Sb2Te3 heterostructure using density functional theory and tight-binding methods. We show that the epitaxial graphene on Sb2Te3 turns into quantum spin-Hall phase due to its proximity to the topological insulating Sb2Te3. It is found that the epitaxial graphene develops a giant spin-orbit gap of about ~20 meV, which is about three orders of magnitude larger than that of pristine …
In a deviation from the conventional Hummers method, a spontaneous expansion approach was introduced with expanded graphite as the precursors. The intercalating agent (H2SO4) was able to penetrate into the expanded graphite; this had further expanded the graphite and as a result, a foam-like intermediate was produced. The foam-like graphite was more easily oxidized in reaction with the oxidant (KMnO4) to form graphene oxide (GO). Fully exfoliated GO was obtained with expanded graphite having the median diameter ~ 15 μm as the precursors. This procedure was much safer and productive in scalable…
We propose a scheme to fabricate the cobalt nitride CoN4 monolayer, a magnetic graphene-like two-dimensional material, in which all Co and N atoms are in a plane. Under the pressure above 40 GPa, the bulk CoN4 is stabilized in a triclinic phase. With the pressure decreasing, the triclinic phase of CoN4 is transformed into an orthorhombic phase, and the latter is a layered compound with large interlayer spacing. At ambient condition, the weak interlayer couplings are so small that single CoN4 layer can be exfoliated by the mechanical method.
We predict twisted double bilayer graphene to be a versatile platform for the realization of fractional Chern insulators readily targeted by tuning the gate potential and the twist angle. Remarkably, these topologically ordered states of matter, including spin singlet Halperin states and spin polarized states in Chern number $\mathcal C=1$ and $\mathcal{C}= 2$ bands, occur at high temperatures and without the need for an external magnetic field.
We demonstrate a considerable suppression of the low-field leakage through a Y2O3 topgate insulator on graphene by applying high-pressure O2 at 100 atm during post-deposition annealing (HP-PDA). Consequently, the quantum capacitance measurement for the monolayer graphene reveals the largest Fermi energy modulation (EF = ~0.52 eV, i.e., the carrier density of ~2*10^13 cm^-2) in the solid-state topgate insulators reported so far. HP-PDA is the robust method to improve the electrical quality of high-k insulators on graphene.
Very recently, a new two-dimensional graphene-like topological insulator, Bi14Rh3I9, has been synthesized. The Bi-Rh sheets with a strong spin-orbit interaction are graphene analogues with a honeycomb net composed of RhBi8 cubes. Here we derive the low-energy effective Hamiltonian involving spin-orbit coupling for Bi14Rh3I9. In the absence of spin-orbit coupling, the Bi-Rh sheets show two inequivalent Dirac cones at the corners of the hexagonal Brillouin zone. The spin-orbit interaction opens a 2400 K bandgap at the Dirac points and establishes the quantum spin Hall effect in the Bi-Rh sheets.…
MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ is an antiferromagnetic topological insulator which stimulates intense interests due to the exotic quantum phenomena and promising device applications. Surface structure is a determinant factor to understand the novel magnetic and topological behavior of MnBi2Te4, yet its precise atomic structure remains elusive. Here, we discovered a spontaneous surface collapse and reconstruction in few-layer MnBi2Te4 exfoliated under delicate protection. Instead of the ideal septuple-layer structure in the bulk, the collapsed surface is shown to reconstruct as Mn-doped Bi$_2$Te$_3$ quintuple-…
We have observed periodically repeated steps in the resistance vs. temperature characteristics of doped Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite and exfoliated doped multi-layer graphene. The observations consist of a series of regularly spaced steps in the resistance vs. temperature curves. The lowest step is observed at a temperature of from 50 to 60 K. Additional steps are observed at multiples of that basic temperature with the highest step temperature being at approximately 270 K. Quenching by a modest applied magnetic field has been observed. The sizes and widths of the observed steps appear t…
We report first-principles calculations on antiferromagnetic spin ordering in graphene under biaxial strain. Using hybrid functional calculations, we found that semimetallic graphene sheets undergo a transition to antiferromagnetic insulators at a biaxial strain of 7.7% and that the band gap rapidly increases after the onset of this transition before reaching 0.9 eV at a biaxial strain of 12%. We examined the competition of the antiferromagnetic spin ordering with two-dimensional Peierls distortions upon biaxial strain, and found that the preceding antiferromagnetic insulator phase impedes the…
Transport properties of progressively reduced graphene oxide (GO) are described. Evolution of the electronic properties reveals that as-synthesized GO undergoes insulator-semiconductor-semi-metal transitions with reduction. The apparent transport gap ranges from 10 ~ 50 meV and approaches zero with extensive reduction. Measurements at varying degrees of reduction reveal that transport in reduced GO occurs via variable-range hopping and further reduction leads to increased number of available hopping sites.
