We derive new space-time uncertainty relations (STUR) at the fundamental Planck length $L_P$ from quantum mechanics and general relativity (GR), both in flat and curved backgrounds. Contrary to claims present in the literature, our approach suggests that no minimal uncertainty appears for lengths, but instead for minimal space and four-volumes. Moreover, we derive a maximal absolute value for the energy density. Finally, some considerations on possible commutators among quantum operators implying our STUR are done.
We introduce a novel model of affine gravity, which implements the no-scale scenario. Namely, Planck mass and Hubble constant emerge dynamically, through the mechanism of spontaneous breaking of scale-invariance. Moreover, in our model the time direction and non--degenerate metric emerge dynamically as well. This naturally gives rise to the inflation and may server as a starting point for the "birth" of the Universe. We show that our model is phenomenologically viable, both from the perspective of the direct tests of gravity and cosmological evolution.
We offer a perspective on some recent results obtained in the context of the group field theory approach to quantum gravity, on top of reviewing them briefly. These concern a natural mechanism for the emergence of non-commutative field theories for matter directly from the GFT action, in both 3 and 4 dimensions and in both Riemannian and Lorentzian signatures. As such they represent an important step, we argue, in bridging the gap between a quantum, discrete picture of a pre-geometric spacetime and the effective continuum geometric physics of gravity and matter, using ideas and tools from fiel…
We place observational likelihood constraints on braneworld and non-commutative inflation for a number of inflaton potentials, using Planck, WMAP polarization and BAO data. Both braneworld and non-commutative scenarios of the kind considered here are limited by the most recent data even more severely than standard general-relativity models. At more than 95 % confidence level, the monomial potential $V(ϕ) \propto ϕ^p$ is ruled out for $p \geq 2$ in the Randall--Sundrum (RS) braneworld cosmology and, for $p>0$, also in the high-curvature limit of the Gauss--Bonnet (GB) braneworld and in the infr…
We propose physically motivated spacetime uncertainty relations (STUR) for flat Friedmann-Lemaître cosmologies. We show that the physical features of these STUR crucially depend on whether a particle horizon is present or not. In particular, when this is the case we deduce the existence of a maximal value for the Hubble rate (or equivalently for the matter density), thus providing an indication that quantum effects may rule out a pointlike big bang singularity. Finally, we costruct a concrete realisation of the corresponding quantum Friedmann spacetime in terms of operators on a Hilbert space.
Quantum groups and non-commutative spaces have been repeatedly utilized in approaches to quantum gravity. They provide a mathematically elegant cut-off, often interpreted as related to the Planck-scale quantum uncertainty in position. We consider here a different geometrical interpretation of this cut-off, where the relevant non-commutative space is the space of directions around any spacetime point. The limitations in angular resolution expresses the finiteness of the angular size of a Planck-scale minimal surface at a maximum distance 1/\sqrt{Lambda} related the cosmological constant Lambda.…
We show how a radiation dominated universe subject to space-time quantization may give rise to inflation as the radiation temperature exceeds the Planck temperature. We consider dispersion relations with a maximal momentum (i.e. a mimimum Compton wavelength, or quantum of space), noting that some of these lead to a trans-Planckian branch where energy increases with decreasing momenta. This feature translates into negative radiation pressure and, in well-defined circumstances, into an inflationary equation of state. We thus realize the inflationary scenario without the aid of an inflaton field.…
Investigations of possible violations of the Pauli Exclusion Principle represent critical tests of the microscopic space-time structure and properties. Space-time non-commutativity provides a class of universality for several Quantum Gravity models. In this context the VIP-2 Lead experiment sets the strongest bounds, searching for Pauli Exclusion Principle violating atomic-transitions in lead, excluding the $θ$-Poincaré Non Commutative Quantum Gravity models far above the Planck scale for non-vanishing $θ_{μν}$ ``electric-like'' components, and up to $6.9 \cdot 10^{-2}$ Planck scales if $θ_{0i…
As a group-theoretic foundation of gravity, it is considered an affine-Goldstone nonlinear model based upon the nonlinear realization of the global affine symmetry spontaneously broken at the Planck scale to the Poincare symmetry. It is shown that below this scale the model justifies and elaborates an earlier introduced effective field theory of the quartet-metric gravity incorporating the gravitational dark substances emerging in addition to the tensor graviton. The prospects for subsequent going beyond the nonlinear model above the Planck scale are indicated.
We study inflation in Weyl gravity. The original Weyl quadratic gravity, based on Weyl conformal geometry, is a theory invariant under Weyl symmetry of (gauged) local scale transformations. In this theory Planck scale ($M$) emerges as the scale where this symmetry is broken spontaneously by a geometric Stueckelberg mechanism, to Einstein-Proca action for the Weyl "photon" (of mass near $M$). With this action as a "low energy" broken phase of Weyl gravity, century-old criticisms of the latter (due to non-metricity) are avoided. In this context, inflation with field values above $M$ is natural, …
We present a new multitrace matrix model, which is a generalization of the real quartic one matrix model, exhibiting dynamical emergence of a fuzzy two-sphere and its non-commutative gauge theory. This provides a novel and a much simpler alternative to Connes non-commutative geometry and to the IKKT matrix model for emergent geometry in two dimensions.
Pauli Exclusion Principle (PEP) violations induced by space-time non-commutativity, a class of universality for several models of Quantum Gravity, are investigated by the VIP-2 Lead experiment at the Gran Sasso underground National Laboratory of INFN. The VIP-2 Lead experimental bound on the non-commutative space-time scale $Λ$ excludes $θ$-Poincaré far above the Planck scale for non vanishing ``electric-like" components of $θ_{μν}$, and up to $6.9 \cdot 10^{-2}$ Planck scales if they are null. Therefore, this new bound represents the tightest one so far provided by atomic transitions tests. T…
The description of the phase space of relativistic particles coupled to three-dimensional Einstein gravity requires momenta which are coordinates on a group manifold rather than on ordinary Minkowski space. The corresponding field theory turns out to be a non-commutative field theory on configuration space and a group field theory on momentum space. Using basic non-commutative Fourier transform tools we introduce the notion of non-commutative heat-kernel associated with the Laplacian on the non-commutative configuration space. We show that the spectral dimension associated to the non-commutati…
The value of the cosmological constant is explained in terms of a noisy diffusion of energy from the low energy particle physics degrees of freedom to the fundamental Planckian granularity which is expected from general arguments in quantum gravity. The quantitative success of our phenomenological model is encouraging and provides possibly useful insights about physics at the scale of quantum gravity.
There is a growing evidence that due to quantum gravity effects the effective spacetime dimensionality might change in the UV. In this letter we investigate this hypothesis by using quantum fields to derive the UV behaviour of the static, two point sources potential. We mimic quantum gravity effects by using non-commutative fields associated to a Lie group momentum space with a Planck mass curvature scale. We find that the static potential becomes finite in the short-distance limit. This indicates that quantum gravity effects lead to a dimensional reduction in the UV or, alternatively, that po…
Recently, a model for an emergent gravity based on $SO(5)$ Yang-Mills action in Euclidian 4-dimensional spacetime was proposed. In this work we provide some 1 and 2-loops computations and show that the model can accommodate suitable predicting values for the Newtonian constant. Moreover, it is shown that the typical scale of the expected transition between the quantum and the geometrodynamical theory is consistent with Planck scale. We also provide a discussion on the cosmological constant problem.
We argue that the emergent spacetime picture admits a background-independent formulation of cosmic inflation. The inflation in this picture corresponds to the dynamical emergence of spacetime while the conventional inflation is simply an (exponential) expansion of a preexisting spacetime owing to the vacuum energy carried by an inflaton field. We show that the cosmic inflation arises as a time-dependent solution of the matrix quantum mechanics describing the dynamical process of Planck energy condensate in vacuum without introducing any inflaton field as well as an {\it ad hoc} inflation poten…
Proposals that quantum gravity gives rise to non-commutative spacetime geometry and deformations of Poincare symmetry are examined in the context of (2+1)-dimensional quantum gravity. The results are expressed in five lessons, which summarise how the gravitational constant, Planck's constant and the cosmological constant enter the non-commutative and non-cocommutative structures arising in (2+1)-dimensional quantum gravity. It is emphasised that the much studied bicrossproduct kappa-Poincare algebra does not arise directly in (2+1)-dimensional quantum gravity.
We present a detailed analysis of a quantum model for Loop Quantum Cosmology based on strict application of the Thiemann regularization algorithm for the Hamiltonian in Loop Quantum Gravity, extending the results presented previously in our brief report. This construction leads to a qualitative modification of the bounce paradigm. Quantum gravity effects still lead to a quantum bounce connecting deterministically large classical Universes. However, the evolution features a large epoch of de Sitter Universe, with emergent cosmological constant of Planckian order, smoothly transiting into a spat…
The gravitational wave signal GW150914, recently detected by LIGO and Virgo collaborations, is used to place a bound on the scale of quantum fuzziness of non-commutative space-time. We show that the leading non-commutative correction to the phase of the gravitational waves produced by a binary system appears at the 2nd order of the post- Newtonian expansion. This correction is proportional to $Λ^2 \equiv |θ^{0i}|^2/(l_P t_P)^2$, where $θ^{μν}$ is the antisymmetric tensor of non-commutativity. To comply with GW150914 data, we find that $\sqrtΛ \lesssim 6$, namely less than one order of magnitud…
We review the main recent progresses in non-commutative space-time phenomenology in underground experiments. A popular model of non-commutative space-time is $θ$-Poincaré model, based on the Groenewold-Moyal plane algebra. This model predicts a violation of the Spin-statistic theorem, in turn implying an energy and angular dependent violation of the Pauli Exclusion principle. Pauli Exclusion Principle Violating transitions in nuclear and atomic systems can be tested with very high accuracy in underground laboratory experiments such as DAMA/LIBRA and VIP(2). In this paper we derive that the $θ$…
A quantum deformation of the conformal algebra of the Minkowskian spacetime in $(3+1)$ dimensions is identified with a deformation of the $(4+1)$-dimensional AdS algebra. Both Minkowskian and AdS first-order non-commutative spaces are explicitly obtained, and the former coincides with the well known $κ$-Minkowski space. Next, by working in the conformal basis, a new non-commutative Minkowskian spacetime is constructed through the full (all orders) dual quantum group spanned by deformed Poincaré and dilation symmetries. Although Lorentz invariance is lost, the resulting non-commutative spacetim…
In this paper we examine a small but detailed test of the emergent gravity picture with explicit solutions in gravity and gauge theory. We first derive symplectic U(1) gauge fields starting from the Eguchi-Hanson metric in four-dimensional Euclidean gravity. The result precisely reproduces the U(1) gauge fields of the Nekrasov-Schwarz instanton previously derived from the top-down approach. In order to clarify the role of noncommutative spacetime, we take the Braden-Nekrasov U(1) instanton defined in ordinary commutative spacetime and derive a corresponding gravitational metric. We show that t…
The Fermi-point scenario of emergent gravity has the following consequences: gravity emerges together with fermionic and bosonic matter; emergent fermionic matter consists of massless Weyl fermions; emergent bosonic matter consists of gauge fields; Lorentz symmetry persists well above the Planck energy; space-time is naturally 4-dimensional; Universe is naturally flat; cosmological constant is naturally small or zero; underlying physics is based on discrete symmetries; `quantum gravity' cannot be obtained by quantization of Einstein equations; there is no contradiction between quantum mechanic…
The quantum nature of the Big Bang is reexamined in the framework of Loop Quantum Cosmology. The strict application of a regularization procedure to the Hamiltonian, originally developed for the Hamiltonian in loop quantum gravity, leads to a qualitative modification of the bounce paradigm. Quantum gravity effects still lead to a quantum bounce connecting deterministically large classical Universes. However, the evolution features a large epoch of de Sitter Universe, with emergent cosmological constant of Planckian order, smoothly transiting into a flat expanding Universe.
We explain how quantum gravity can be defined by quantizing spacetime itself. A pinpoint is that the gravitational constant G = L_P^2 whose physical dimension is of (length)^2 in natural unit introduces a symplectic structure of spacetime which causes a noncommutative spacetime at the Planck scale L_P. The symplectic structure of spacetime M leads to an isomorphism between symplectic geometry (M, ω) and Riemannian geometry (M, g) where the deformations of symplectic structure ωin terms of electromagnetic fields F=dA are transformed into those of Riemannian metric g. This approach for quantum g…
We start from classical general relativity coupled to matter fields. Each configuration variable and its conjugate momentum, as also space-time points, are raised to the status of matrices [equivalently operators]. These matrices obey a deterministic Lagrangian dynamics at the Planck scale. By coarse-graining this matrix dynamics over time intervals much larger than Planck time, one derives quantum theory as a low energy emergent approximation. If a sufficiently large number of degrees of freedom get entangled, spontaneous localisation takes place, leading to the emergence of classical space-t…
A Lorentz invariant statistical model is presented for rotational fluctuations in the local inertial frame that arise from new quantum degrees of freedom of space-time. The model assumes invariant classical causal structure, and a Planck information density in invariant proper time determined by the world line of an observer. It describes macroscopic spacelike correlations that appear as observable timelike correlations in phase differences of light propagating on paths that begin and end on the same world line. The model allows an exact prediction for the autocorrelation of any interferometer…
A natural geometric framework of noncommutative spacetime is symplectic geometry rather than Riemannian geometry. The Darboux theorem in symplectic geometry then admits a novel form of the equivalence principle such that the electromagnetism in noncommutative spacetime can be regarded as a theory of gravity. Remarkably the emergent gravity reveals a noble picture about the origin of spacetime, dubbed as emergent spacetime, which is radically different from any previous physical theory all of which describe what happens in a given spacetime. In particular, the emergent gravity naturally explain…
We consider the issue of computability at the most fundamental level of physical reality: the Planck scale. To this aim, we consider the theoretical model of a quantum computer on a non commutative space background, which is a computational model for quantum gravity. In this domain, all computable functions are the laws of physics in their most primordial form, and non computable mathematics finds no room in the physical world. Moreover, we show that a theorem that classically was considered true but non computable, at the Planck scale becomes computable but non decidable. This fact is due to …
There ought to exist a reformulation of quantum theory which does not depend on classical time. To achieve such a reformulation, we introduce the concept of an atom of space-time-matter (STM). An STM atom is a classical non-commutative geometry, based on an asymmetric metric, and sourced by a closed string. Different such atoms interact via entanglement. The statistical thermodynamics of a large number of such atoms gives rise, at equilibrium, to a theory of quantum gravity. Far from equilibrium, where statistical fluctuations are large, the emergent theory reduces to classical general relativ…
We relate structurally dynamic cellular networks, a class of models we developed in fundamental space-time physics, to SDCA, introduced some time ago by Ilachinski and Halpern. We emphasize the crucial property of a non-linear interaction of network geometry with the matter degrees of freedom in order to emulate the supposedly highly erratic and strongly fluctuating space-time structure on the Planck scale. We then embark on a detailed numerical analysis of various large scale characteristics of several classes of models in order to understand what will happen if some sort of macroscopic or co…
Observations indicate that the universe is effectively flat, but they do not rule out a closed universe. The role of positive curvature is negligible at late times, but can be crucial in the early universe. In particular, positive curvature allows for cosmologies that originate as Einstein static universes, and then inflate and later reheat to a hot big bang era. These cosmologies have no singularity, no "beginning of time", and no horizon problem. If the initial radius is chosen to be above the Planck scale, then they also have no quantum gravity era, and are described by classical general re…
A common feature of all Quantum Gravity (QG) phenomenology approaches is to consider a modification of the mass shell condition of the relativistic particle to take into account quantum gravitational effects. The framework for such approaches is therefore usually set up in the cotangent bundle (phase space). However it was recently proposed that this phenomenology could be associated with an energy dependent geometry that has been coined ``rainbow metric". We show here that the latter actually corresponds to a Finsler Geometry, the natural generalization of Riemannian Geometry. We provide in t…
The concept of a horizon known from general relativity describes the loss of causal connection and can be applied to non-gravitational scenarios such as out-of-equilibrium condensed-matter systems in the laboratory. This analogy facilitates the identification and theoretical study (e.g., regarding the trans-Planckian problem) and possibly the experimental verification of "exotic" effects known from gravity and cosmology, such as Hawking radiation. Furthermore, it yields a unified description and better understanding of non-equilibrium phenomena in condensed matter systems and their universal f…
Canonical quantum gravity provides insights into the quantum dynamics as well as quantum geometry of space-time by its implications for constraints. Loop quantum gravity in particular requires specific corrections due to its quantization procedure, which also results in a discrete picture of space. The corresponding changes compared to the classical behavior can most easily be analyzed in isotropic models, but perturbations around them are more involved. For one type of corrections, consistent equations have been found which shed light on the underlying space-time structure at the Planck scale…
It is shown that nearly-flat 3+1D spacetime emerging from a dual quantum field theory in 2+1D displays quantum fluctuations from classical Euclidean geometry on macroscopic scales. A covariant holographic mapping is assumed, where plane wave states with wavevector k on a 2D surface map onto classical null trajectories in the emergent third dimension at an angle θ=l_P k relative to the surface element normal, where l_P denotes the Planck length. Null trajectories in the 3+1D world then display quantum uncertainty of angular orientation, with standard deviation Δθ=\sqrt{l_P/z} for longitudinal p…
Einstein's equations of general relativity (GR) can describe the connection between events within a given hypervolume of size $L$ larger than the Planck length $L_P$ in terms of wormhole connections where metric fluctuations give rise to an indetermination relationship that involves the Riemann curvature tensor. At low energies (when $L \gg L_P$), these connections behave like an exchange of a virtual graviton with wavelength $λ_G=L$ as if gravitation were an emergent physical property. Down to Planck scales, wormholes avoid the gravitational collapse and any superposition of events or space--…
We have recently proposed a new matrix dynamics at the Planck scale, building on the theory of trace dynamics. This is a Lagrangian dynamics in which the matrix degrees of freedom are made from Grassmann numbers, and the Lagrangian is trace of a matrix polynomial. Matrices made from even grade elements of the Grassmann algebra are called bosonic, and those made from odd grade elements are called fermionic: together they describe an `aikyon'. In the present article we provide a basic definition of spin angular momentum in this matrix dynamics, and introduce a bosonic (fermionic) configuration v…
We study the effective cosmological dynamics, emerging as the hydrodynamics of simple condensate states, of a group field theory model for quantum gravity coupled to a massless scalar field and reduced to its isotropic sector. The quantum equations of motion for these group field theory condensate states are given in relational terms with respect to the scalar field, from which effective dynamics for spatially flat, homogeneous and isotropic space-times can be extracted. The result is a generalization of the Friedmann equations, including quantum gravity modifications, in a specific regime of …
Effective field theories (EFTs) have been widely used as a framework in order to place constraints on the Planck suppressed Lorentz violations predicted by various models of quantum gravity. There are however technical problems in the EFT framework when it comes to ensuring that small Lorentz violations remain small -- this is the essence of the "naturalness" problem. Herein we present an "emergent" space-time model, based on the "analogue gravity'' programme, by investigating a specific condensed-matter system that is in principle capable of simulating the salient features of an EFT framework…
Modeling the event horizon of a black hole by a fuzzy sphere it is shown that in the classical limit, for large astrophysical black-holes, the event horizon looks locally like a non-commutative plane with non-commutative parameter dictated by the Planck length. Some suggestions in the literature concerning black hole mass spectra are used to derive a formula for the mass spectrum of quantum black holes in terms of four integers which define the area, angular momentum, electric and magnetic charge of the black hole. We also suggest how the classical bounds on extremal black holes might be modif…
A new class of gravity-matter models defined in terms of two independent non-Riemannian volume forms (alternative generally covariant integration measure densities) on the space-time manifold are studied in some detail. These models involve an additional $R^2$ (square of the scalar curvature) term as well as scalar matter field potentials of appropriate form so that the pertinent action is invariant under global Weyl-scale symmetry. Scale invariance is spontaneously broken upon integration of the equations of motion for the auxiliary volume-form degrees of freedom. After performing transition …
In this paper we have constructed a coordinate space (or geometric) Lagrangian for a point particle that satisfies the exact Doubly Special Relativity (DSR) dispersion relation in the Magueijo-Smolin framework. Next we demonstrate how a Non-Commutative phase space is needed to maintain Lorentz invariance for the DSR dispersion relation. Lastly we address the very important issue of velocity of this DSR particle. Exploiting the above Non-commutative phase space algebra in a Hamiltonian framework, we show that the speed of massless particles is $c$ and for massive particles the speed saturates a…
We are studying the dynamics of a one-dimensional field in a non-commutative Euclidean space. The non-commutative space we consider is the one that emerges in the context of three dimensional Euclidean quantum gravity: it is a deformation of the classical Euclidean space and the Planck length plays the role of the deformation parameter. The field is interpreted as a particle which evolves in a quantum background. When the dynamics of the particle is linear, the resulting motion is similar to the standard motion in the classical space. However, non-linear dynamics on the non-commutative space a…
We examine the cosmological implications of space-time non-commutativity, discovering yet another realization of the varying speed of light model. Our starting point is the well-known fact that non-commutativity leads to deformed dispersion relations, relating energy and momentum, implying a frequency dependent speed of light. A Hot Big Bang Universe therefore experiences a higher speed of light as it gets hotter. We study the statistical physics of this "deformed radiation", recovering standard results at low temperatures, but a number of novelties at high temperatures: a deformed Planck's sp…
Emergent gravity views spacetime as an entity emergent from a more complete theory of interacting fundamental constituents valid at much finer resolution or higher energies, usually assumed to be above the Planck energy. In this view general relativity is an effective theory valid only at long wavelengths and low energies. For any presumed known theory for the microscopic structure of spacetime, we describe common tasks of emergent gravity (`top-down'), namely, identifying the conditions and processes or mechanisms whereby the familiar macroscopic spacetime emerges with high probability and re…
A Lorentz invariant framework is developed to model the cross spectrum of two interferometers in a space-time that emerges from a Planck scale quantum system with exact causal symmetry and holographic spacelike rotational correlations. Space-time relationships between world lines are generated by entanglement of geometrical states on causal diamonds. The entanglement is tied to a unique observable signature: an exotic imaginary broad band cross spectrum, with a frequency structure determined by the layout of the interferometers. The models will be used to interpret data from the reconfigured F…
