The quark-lepton complementarity (QLC) relations indicate a deep structure that interrelates quarks and leptons. We propose new scenarios, in a seesaw framework with discrete $A_4$ flavor symmetry, which can accommodate the QLC relations and the nonzero neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ together with all the available neutrino experimental data, in a consistent way to generate the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix for the quark mixing. Certain effective dimension-5 operators are introduced, which induce a deviation of the lepton mixing matrix from the tribimaximal mixing (TBM) pattern and lead the quark mixing matrix to the CKM one in form. We explicitly demonstrate three different possibilities of constructing the charged lepton mixing matrix and point out that the {\it phases} of whose elements play a crucial role to satisfy the QLC relations. We find that for the reactor mixing angle $θ_{13}$ its possible values can vary around the center value $\sin θ_{13} \simeq λ/\sqrt{2}$ ($λ\simeq 0.22$ being the Cabbibo angle) and have the lower bound $θ_{13} \gtrsim 3.5^{\circ}$. We also show that sizable leptonic CP violation characterized by the Jarlskog invariant $|J_{\rm CP}|\sim{\cal O}(10^{-2})$ is allowed, which is expected to be tested in the future experiments such as the upcoming long baseline neutrino oscillation ones.
Although tribimaximal mixing (TBM) and quark-lepton complementarity (QLC) are both compatible with experimental data within one standard deviation ($ 1 σ$), the TBM and QLC assumptions are mutually exclusive by $56 σ$.
The newly proposed finite symmetry Sigma(81) is applied to the problem of neutrino tribimaximal mixing. The result is more satisfactory than those of previous models based on A_4 in that the use of auxiliary symmetries (or mechanisms) may be avoided. Deviations from the tribimaximal pattern are expected, but because of its basic structure, only tan^2 (theta_12) may differ significantly from 0.5 (say 0.45) with sin^2 (2 theta_23) remaining very close to one, and theta_13 very nearly zero.
We investigate the viability of thermal leptogenesis in type-I seesaw models with leptonic flavour symmetries that lead to tribimaximal neutrino mixing. We consider an effective theory with an A4 x Z3 x Z4 symmetry, which is spontaneously broken at a scale much higher than the electroweak scale. At the high scale, leptonic Yukawa interactions lead to exact tribimaximal mixing and the heavy Majorana neutrino mass spectrum is exactly degenerate. In this framework, leptogenesis becomes viable once this degeneracy is lifted either by renormalization group effects or by a soft breaking of the A4 sy…
We consider the perturbatively modified tribimaximal (or bimaximal) mixing to estimate the (Dirac-type) CP phase in neutrino mixing matrix. The expressions for the CP phase are derived from the equivalence between the standard parametrization of the neutrino mixing matrix for the Majorana neutrino and modified tribimaximal or bimaximal mixing matrices with appropriate CP phases. Carrying out numerical analysis based on the current experimental results for neutrino mixing angles, we can predict the values of the CP phase for several possible cases.
Brannen has recently pointed out that the observed charged lepton masses satisfy the relation m_e +m_μ+m_τ= {2/3} (\sqrt{m_e}+\sqrt{m_μ}+\sqrt{m_τ})^2, while the observed neutrino masses satisfy the relation m_{ν1} +m_{ν2} +m_{ν3} = {2/3} (-\sqrt{m_{ν1}}+\sqrt{m_{ν2}}+\sqrt{m_{ν3}})^2. It is discussed what neutrino Yukawa interaction form is favorable if we take the fact pointed out by Brannen seriously.
We present a systematic group space scan of discrete Abelian flavor symmetries for lepton mass models that produce nearly tribimaximal lepton mixing. In our models, small neutrino masses are generated by the type-I seesaw mechanism. The lepton mass matrices emerge from higher-dimension operators via the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism and are predicted as powers of a single expansion parameter εthat is of the order of the Cabibbo angle θ_C\simeq 0.2. We focus on solutions that can give close to tribimaximal lepton mixing with a very small reactor angle θ_{13}\approx 0 and find several thousand expl…
We address two fundamental aspects of flavor physics: the mass hierarchy and the large lepton mixing angles. On one side, left-right flavor symmetry realizes the democratic mass matrix patterns and explains why one family is much heavier than the others. On the other side, discrete flavor symmetry such as A4 leads to the observed tribimaximal mixing for the leptons. We show that, by explicitly breaking the left-right flavor symmetry into the diagonal A4, it is possible to explain both the observed charged fermion mass hierarchies and quark and lepton mixing angles. In particular we predict a h…
We survey the lepton flavor violation branching ratios Br(mu->e,gamma), Br(tau->mu,gamma), and Br(tau->e,gamma) in mSUGRA for a broad class of lepton mass matrix textures that give nearly tribimaximal lepton mixing. Small neutrino masses are generated by the type-I seesaw mechanism with non-degenerate right-handed neutrino masses. The textures exhibit a hierarchical mass pattern and can be understood from flavor models giving rise to large leptonic mixing. We study the branching ratios for the most general CP-violating forms of the textures. It is demonstrated that the branching ratios can be …
General lowest order perturbations to hermitian squared mass matrices of leptons are considered away from the tribimaximal (TBM) limit in which a weak flavor basis with mass diagonal charged leptons is chosen. The three measurable TBM deviants are expressed linearly in terms of perturbation induced dimensionless coefficients appearing in the charged lepton and neutrino flavor eigenstates. With unnatural cancellations assumed to be absent and the charged lepton perturbation contributions to their flavor eigenstates argued to be small, we analytically derive the following result. Within lowest o…
Neutrino tribimaximal mixing is obtained from the breaking of A_4 to Z_3 in the charged-lepton sector and to Z_2 in the neutrino sector. To enforce this conflicting pattern, extra particles and symmetries are usually invoked, often accompanied by nonrenormalizable interactions and even extra dimensions. It is shown here in a specific renormalizable model how A_4 alone will accomplish this, with only the help of lepton number.
Group theoretical arguments seem to indicate the discrete symmetry S4 as the minimal flavour symmetry compatible with tribimaximal neutrino mixing. We prove in a model independent way that indeed S4 can realize exact tribimaximal mixing through different symmetry breaking patterns. We present two models in which lepton tribimaximal mixing is realized in different ways and for each one we discuss the superpotential that leads to the correct breaking of the flavor symmetry.
Current neutrino data are consistent with the so-called tribimaximal mixing scenario, which predicts \sin^2 θ_{12}=1/3, zero U_{e3} and maximal θ_{23}. This implies a special form of the neutrino mass matrix. Introducing small breaking terms in this mass matrix generates deviations from the tribimaximal scheme and leads to testable correlations between the parameters. They depend on where the perturbation is located in the mass matrix. A special case of such perturbations are radiative corrections. Alternative deviations from tribimaximal mixing may stem from contributions of the charged lepto…
Tribimaximal leptonic mixing is a mass-independent mixing scheme consistent with the present solar and atmospheric neutrino data. By conveniently decomposing the effective neutrino mass matrix associated to it, we derive generic predictions in terms of the parameters governing the neutrino masses. We extend this phenomenological analysis to other mass-independent mixing schemes which are related to the tribimaximal form by a unitary transformation. We classify models that produce tribimaximal leptonic mixing through the group structure of their family symmetries in order to point out that ther…
It is pointed out that if a neutrino mass matrix for right-handed neutrinos in seesaw mechanism has mu -tau symmetry and total lepton number L_{e}+L_{μ}+L_τ remains constant (not zero), exact tribimaximal neutrino mixing in this sector is produced. The same follows for the effective Majorana light neutrino mass matrix provided that Yukawa couplings (multiplied by the corresponding Higgs vacuum expectation values) in Dirac mass matrix satisfy some constraints which in general implies zero leptongenesis asymmetry. However this can be avoided when two of the heavy right-hand neutrinos [the third …
The recent results from Daya Bay and RENO reactor neutrino experiments have firmly established that the smallest reactor mixing angle $θ_{13}$ is non-vanishing at the $5 σ$ level, with a relatively large value, i.e., $θ_{13}\approx 9^{\circ}$. Using the fact that the neutrino mixing matrix can be represented as $V_{\rm PMNS}=U_l^{\dagger} U_ν P_ν$, where $U_l$ and $U_ν$ result from the diagonalization of the charged lepton and neutrino mass matrices and $P_ν$ is a diagonal matrix containing the Majorana phases and assuming the tri-bimaximal form for $U_ν$, we investigate the possibility of acc…
In light of the recent neutrino experimental results from Daya Bay and RENO Collaborations, we construct a realistic tribimaximal-like Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata (PMNS) leptonic mixing matrix. Motivated by the Qin-Ma (QM) parametrization for the quark mixing matrix in which the CP-odd phase is approximately maximal, we propose a simple ansatz for the charged lepton mixing matrix, namely, it has the QM-like parametrization, and assume the tribimaximal mixing (TBM) pattern for the neutrino mixing matrix. The deviation of the leptonic mixing matrix from the TBM one is then systematically stu…
Recent work on a lepton mass matrix model based on an SU(3) flavor symmetry which is broken into S_4 is reviewed. The flavor structures of the masses and mixing are caused by VEVs of SU(2)_L-singlet scalars ϕwhich are nonets ({\bf 8}+{\bf 1}) of the SU(3) flavor symmetry, and which are broken into {\bf 2}+{\bf 3}+{\bf 3}' and {\bf 1} of S_4. If we require the invariance under the transformation (ϕ^{(8)},ϕ^{(1)}) \to (-ϕ^{(8)},+ϕ^{(1)}) for the superpotential of the nonet field ϕ^{(8+1)}, the model leads to a beautiful relation for the charged lepton masses. The observed tribimaximal neutrino m…
On account of the new neutrino oscillation data signalling a non-zero value for the smallest mixing angle ($θ_z$), we present an explicit realization of the underlying U(1) symmetry characterizing the maximal atmospheric mixing angle ($θ_y = π/ 4$) pattern with two degenerate masses but now with generic values of $θ_z$. We study the effects of the form invariance with respect to U(1), and/or $Z_3$, $Z_2$ subgroups, on the Yukawa couplings and the mass terms. Later on, we specify $θ_z$ to its experimental best fit value ($ \sim 8^o$), and impose the symmetry in an entire model which includes ch…
The neutrino oscillation data are in very good agreement with the tribimaximal mixing pattern: \sin^2θ_{23}=1/2, \sin^2θ_{12}=1/3, and \sin^2θ_{13}=0. Attempts to generate this pattern based on finite family symmetry groups typically assume that the family symmetry is broken to different subgroups in the charged lepton and the neutrino mass matrices. This leads to a technical problem, where the cross-couplings between the Higgs fields responsible for the two symmetry breaking chains force their vacuum expectation values to align, upsetting the desired breaking pattern. Here, we present a class…
We propose a model-independent analysis of the neutrino mass matrix through an expansion in terms of the eigenvectors defining the lepton mixing matrix, which we show can be parametrized as small perturbations of the tribimaximal mixing eigenvectors. This approach proves to be powerful and convenient for some aspects of lepton mixing, in particular when studying the sensitivity of the mass matrix elements to departures from their tribimaximal form. In terms of the eigenvector decomposition, the neutrino mass matrix can be understood as originating from a tribimaximal dominant structure with sm…
Present data on neutrino masses and mixing favor the highly symmetric tribimaximal neutrino mixing matrix which suggests an underlying flavor symmetry. A systematic study of non-abelian finite groups of order $g \leq 31$ reveals that tribimaximal mixing can be derived not only from the well known tetrahedral flavor symmetry $T \equiv A_4$, but also by using the binary tetrahedral symmetry $T^{'} \equiv SL_2(F_3)$ which does not contain the tetrahedral group as a subgroup. $T^{'}$ has the further advantage that it can also neatly accommodate the quark masses including a heavy top quark.
Harrison, Perkins and Scott have proposed simple charged lepton and neutrino mass matrices that lead to the tribimaximal mixing $U_{\rm TBM}$. We consider in this work an extension of the mass matrices so that the leptonic mixing matrix becomes $U_{\rm PMNS}=V_L^{\ell\dagger}U_{\rm TBM}W$, where $V_L^\ell$ is a unitary matrix needed to diagonalize the charged lepton mass matrix and $W$ measures the deviation of the neutrino mixing matrix from the bimaximal form. Hence, corrections to $U_{\rm TBM}$ arise from both charged lepton and neutrino sectors. Following our previous work to assume a Qin-…
A simple relation U_{MNS}=V_{CKM}^\dagger U_{TB} between the lepton and quark mixing matrices (U_{MNS} and V_{CKM}) is speculated under an ansatz that U_{MNS} becomes an exact tribimaximal mixing U_{TB} in a limit V_{CKM}={\bf 1}. By using the observed CKM mixing parameters, possible values of neutrino oscillation parameters are estimated: \sin^2 θ_{13}=0.024-0.028, \sin^2 2θ_{23}=0.94-0.95 and \tan^2 θ_{12}=0.24-1.00 depending on phase conventions of U_{TB}. Those values are testable soon by precision measurements in neutrino oscillation experiments.
In the context of A_4 symmetry, neutrino tribimaximal mixing is achieved through the breaking of A_4 to Z_3 (Z_2) in the charged-lepton (neutrino) sector respectively. The implied vacuum misalignment of the (1,1,1) and (1,0,0) directions in A_4 space is a difficult technical problem, and cannot be treated without many auxiliary fields and symmetries (and perhaps extra dimensions). It is pointed out here that an alternative scenario exists with A_4 alone and no redundant fields, if neutrino masses are "scotogenic", i.e. radiatively induced by dark scalar doublets as recently proposed.
We study renormalization group running effects on neutrino mixing patterns when a (type I) seesaw model is implemented by suitable flavour symmetries. We are particularly interested in mass-independent mixing patterns to which the widely studied tribimaximal mixing pattern belongs. In this class of flavour models, the running contribution from neutrino Yukawa coupling, which is generally dominant at energies above the seesaw threshold, can be absorbed by a small shift on neutrino mass eigenvalues leaving mixing angles unchanged. Consequently, in the whole running energy range, the change in mi…
Solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillations are consistent with a tribimaximal form of the mixing matrix $U$ of the lepton sector. Exact tribimaximal mixing leads to $θ_{13}=0$. Recent results from the Daya Bay and RENO experiments have established a non-zero value of $θ_{13}$. Keeping the leading behaviour of $U$ as tribimaximal we perform a model-independent perturbative calculation to incorporate a non-vanishing $θ_{13}$. We identify the nature of the perturbation matrix and consider the possibility of the solar neutrino splitting also resulting from it. We calculate up to first order in pe…
Maximal CP violation hypothesis is applied to a simple lepton mixing matrix form U=V_{CKM}^\dagger U_{TB}, which has recently been speculated under an ansatz that U becomes an exact tribimaximal mixing U_{TB} in a limit of the quark mixing matrix V_{CKM} \to {\bf 1}. The prediction \tan^2 θ_{12} =1/2 in the case of the exact tribimaximal mixing U=U_{TB} is onsiderably spoiled in the speculated mixing U=V_{CKM}^\dagger U_{TB}. However, the application of the hypothesis to the lepton sector can again recover the spoiled value to \tan^2 θ_{12} \simeq 1/2 if the original Kobayashi-Maskawa phase co…
More often than not, models of flavor symmetry rely on the use of nonrenormalizable operators (in the guise of flavons) to accomplish the phenomenologically successful tribimaximal mixing of neutrinos. We show instead how a simple renormalizable two-parameter neutrino mass model of tribimaximal mixing can be constructed with the non-Abelian discrete symmetry T_7 and the gauging of B-L. This is also achieved without the addition of auxiliary symmetries and particles present in almost all other proposals. Most importantly, it is verifiable at the Large Hadron Collider.
Within the type-I seesaw framework with three heavy right chiral neutrinos and in the basis where the latter and the charged leptons are mass diagonal, a near `mu-tau' symmetry in the neutrino sector is strongly suggested by the neutrino oscillation data. There is further evidence for a close to the tribimaximal mixing pattern which subsumes `mu-tau' symmetry. On the other hand, the assumption of a (maximally allowed) four zero texture in the Yukawa coupling matrix Y_nu in the same basis leads to a highly constrained and predictive theoretical scheme. We show that the requirement of an exact `…
I review some of the recent progress (up to September 2005) in applying non-Abelian discrete symmetries to the family structure of leptons, with particular emphasis on the tribimaximal mixing ansatz of Harrison, Perkins, and Scott.
We propose a seesaw scenario that possible corrections to the tribimaximal pattern of lepton mixing are due to the small phase splitting of the right-handed neutrino mass matrix. we show that the small deviations can be expressed analytically in terms of two splitting parameters($δ_1$ and $δ_2$) in the leading order. The solar mixing angle $θ_{12}$ favors a relatively smaller value compared to zero order value ($35.3^\circ$), and the Dirac type CP phase $δ$ chooses a nearly maximal one. The two Majorana type CP phases $ρ$ and $σ$ turn out to be a nearly linear dependence. Also a normal hierarc…
Assuming that the leptonic mixing matrix is given in first approximation by the tribimaximal form we deduce some consequences with regard to the finite symmetries that may be applied in the minimal lepton sector of the electroweak theory.
I review some of the recent progress (up to December 2005) in applying non-Abelian discrete symmetries to the family structure of leptons, with particular emphasis on the tribimaximal mixing ansatz of Harrison, Perkins, and Scott.
Recently the possible origin of the so-called quark-lepton complementarity relations has received a considerable amount of attention. We point out some of the inherent ambiguities in such analyses.
We argue that the difference between the observed approximate quark-lepton complementarity and the theoretical prediction based on realistic quark-lepton symmetry within the seesaw mechanism may be adjusted by means of a triplet contribution in the seesaw formula.
The complementarity between the quark and lepton mixing matrices is shown to provide a robust prediction for the neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}^{PMNS}$. We obtain this prediction by first showing that the matrix $V_M$, product of the CKM and PMNS mixing matrices, may have a zero (1,3) entry which is favored by experimental data. Hence models with bimaximal or tribimaximal forms of the correlation matrix $V_M$ are quite possible. Any theoretical model with a vanishing (1,3) entry of $V_M$ that is in agreement with quark data, solar, and atmospheric mixing angle leads to $θ_{13}^{PMNS}=(9{^{+1}_{…
We study the existence of one/two texture zeros or one/two vanishing minors in the neutrino mass matrix with $μτ$ symmetry. In the basis where the charged lepton mass matrix and the Dirac neutrino mass matrix are diagonal, the one/two zeros or one/two vanishing minors in the right-handed Majorana mass matrix having $μτ$ symmetry will propagate via seesaw mechanism as one/two vanishing minors or one/two texture zeros in the neutrino mass matrix with $μτ$ symmetry respectively. It is found that only five such texture structures of the neutrino mass matrix are phenomenologically viable. For tribi…
With the progress of increasingly precise measurements on the neutrino mixing angles, phenomenological relations such as quark-lepton complementarity (QLC) among mixing angles of quarks and leptons and self-complementarity (SC) among lepton mixing angles have been observed. Using the latest global fit results of the quark and lepton mixing angles in the standard Chau-Keung scheme, we calculate the mixing angles and CP-violating phases in the other eight different schemes. We check the dependence of these mixing angles on the CP-violating phases in different phase schemes. The dependence of QLC…
In the present work we study both thermal and non-thermal leptogenesis in all neutrino mass models describing the presently available neutrino mass patterns. We consider the Majorana CP violating phases coming from right-handed Majorana mass matrices to estimate the baryon asymmetry of the universe, for different neutrino mass models namely degenerate, inverted hierarchical and normal hierarchical models, with tribimaximal mixings. Considering two possible diagonal forms of Dirac neutrino mass matrix as either charged lepton or up-quark mass matrix, the right-handed Majorana mass matrices are …
We present a renormalizable model for fermion masses based solely on the double tetrahedral group T'. It does not include right handed neutrinos and majorana neutrino masses are generated radiatively. The scalar sector of the model involves three SU(2) doublets and a set of lepton number violating (charged) scalars needed to give mass to the neutrinos. In the quark sector the model leads to a Fritzsch type scenario that is consistent with all the existing data. In the lepton sector, the model leads to tribimaximal (and near tribimaximal) mixing, and an inverted mass hierarchy.
The neutrino mixing matrix has been measured to be of a form consistent with tribimaximal mixing, while the quark mixing matrix is almost diagonal. A scheme based on flavour A_4 symmetry for understanding these patterns simultaneously is presented.
We present a model of neutrino mixing based on the flavour group $Δ(27)$ in order to account for the observation of a non-zero reactor mixing angle ($θ_{13}$). The model provides a common flavour structure for the charged-lepton and the neutrino sectors, giving their mass matrices a `circulant-plus-diagonal' form. Mass matrices of this form readily lead to mixing patterns with realistic deviations from tribimaximal mixing, including non-zero $θ_{13}$. With the parameters constrained by existing measurements, our model predicts an inverted neutrino mass hierarchy. We obtain two distinct sets of…
We systematically construct an extensive list of realistic mass matrix textures for leptons. For this set of matrices, we discuss the parameter space, and illustrate how these textures could be generated in explicit models from flavor symmetries.
We examine how a parametrization of neutrino mixing matrix reflecting quark-lepton complementarity can be probed by considering phase-averaged oscillation probabilities, flavor composition of neutrino fluxes coming from atmospheric and astrophysical neutrinos and lepton flavor violating radiative decays. We discuss about some distinct features of the parametrization by comparing with the triminimal parametrization of perturbations to tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing matrix.
The addition of an A_4 family symmetry and extended Higgs sector to the Standard Model can generate the tribimaximal mixing pattern for leptons, assuming the correct vacuum expectation value alignment of the Higgs scalars. Deviating this alignment affects the predictions for the neutrino oscillation and neutrino mass observables. An attempt is made to classify the plethora of models in the literature, with respect to the chosen A_4 particle assignments. Of these models, two particularly popular examples have been analyzed for deviations from tribimaximal mixing by perturbing the vacuum expecta…
The measurements of the neutrino and quark mixing angles satisfy the empirical relations called Quark-Lepton Complementarity. These empirical relations suggest the existence of a correlation between the mixing matrices of leptons and quarks. In this work, we examine the possibility that this correlation between the mixing angles of quarks and leptons originates in the similar hierarchy of quarks and charged lepton masses and the seesaw mechanism type~I, that gives mass to the Majorana neutrinos. We assume that the similar mass hierarchies of charged lepton and quark masses allows us to represe…
The quark-lepton complementarity (QLC) is very suggestive in understanding possible relations between quark and lepton mixing matrices. We explore the QLC relations in all the possible angle-phase parametrizations and point out that they can approximately hold in five parametrizations. Furthermore, the vanishing of the smallest mixing angles in the CKM and PMNS matrices can make sure that the QLC relations exactly hold in those five parametrizations. Finally, the sensitivity of the QLC relations to radiative corrections is also discussed.
We describe current and future hadron collider limits on new vector-like leptons with exotic decays. We consider the possibility that, besides standard decays, the new leptons can also decay into a Standard Model charged lepton and a stable particle like a dark photon. To increase their applicability, our results are given in terms of arbitrary branching ratios in the different decay channels. In the case that the dark photon is stable at cosmological scales we discuss the interplay between the dark photon and the vector-like lepton in generating the observed dark matter relic abundance and th…
Following analogy of the `db' triangle in the quark mixing case, we have explored the construction of the `ν_2.ν_3' leptonic unitarity triangle using the Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata matrix obtained by Bjorken {\it et al.} through generalization of the tribimaximal scenario. In particular, for the U_{e3} range 0.05-0.15, the existence of the leptonic unitarity triangle indicates a fairly good possibility of having non zero CP violation.
The recent experimental measurements of the solar neutrino mixing angle $θ_{sol}$ and the Cabibbo mixing angle $θ_C$ reveal a surprising relation, $ θ_{sol}+θ_C \simeq \fracπ{4}$. We note that the lepton mixing matrix derived from quark-lepton unification can lead to a shift of the complementarity relation at low energy. While the renormalization group effects generally lead to additive contribution on top of the shift, in this letter, we show that the threshold corrections which may exist in some intermediate scale new physics such as supersymmetric standard model can diminish it, so we can a…
It is suggested that there is an underlying symmetry which relates the quark and lepton sectors. Namely, among the mixing matrix elements of CKM for quarks and PMNS for leptons there exist complementarity relations at a high energy scale (such as the see-saw or even the GUT scales). Assuming that the relations would remain during the matrix elements running down to the EW scale. Observable breaking of the rational relation is attributed to existence of sterile neutrinos which mix with the active neutrino to result in the observable PMNS matrix. We show that involvement of a sterile in the (3+1…
As a result of identification of the solution to the solar neutrino problem, a rather precise relation theta_{sun} + theta_C = pi/4 between the leptonic 1-2 mixing angle theta_{sun} and the Cabibbo angle has emerged. It would mean that the lepton and the quark mixing angles add up to the maximal, suggesting a deep structure by which quarks and leptons are interrelated. We refer the relation ``quark-lepton complementarity'' (QLC) in this paper. We formulate general conditions under which the QLC relation is realized. We then present several scenarios which lead to the relation and elaborate on …
Recent measurements of the neutrino solar mixing angle and the Cabibbo angle satisfy the empirical relation theta_{sol} + theta_{C} ~ 45^{o}. This relation suggests the existence of a correlation between the mixing matrices of leptons and quarks, the so called quark-lepton complementarity. Here, we examine the possibility that this correlation originates in the strong hierarchy in the mass spectra of quarks and charged leptons, and the seesaw mechanism that gives mass to the Majorana neutrinos. In a unified treatment of quarks and leptons in which the mass matrices of all fermions have a simil…
In the so-called yukawaon model, where effective Yukawa coupling constants Y_f^{eff} (f=e,ν,u,d) are given by vacuum expectation values of gauge singlet scalars (yukawaons) Y_f with 3\times 3 flavor components, it is tried to give a unified description of quark and lepton mass matrices. Especially, without assuming any discrete symmetry in the lepton sector, nearly tribimaximal mixing is derived by assumed a simple up-quark mass matrix form.
To include the quark sector, the $A_{5}\equiv I$ (icosahedron) four generation lepton model is extended to a binary icosahedral symmetry $I'$ flavor model. We find the masses of fermions, including the heavy sectors, can be accommodated. At leading order the CKM matrix is the identity and the PMNS matrix, resulting from same set of vacua, corresponds to tribimaximal mixings.
Similarity between the weak interaction properties of quarks and leptons has led to suggestions that the origin of lepton mixing angles may be related to those of quarks. In this paper, we present a gauge model based on $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R\times SU(4)_c$ group that leads to a new form for the quark lepton complementarity which predicts the solar neutrino mixing angle in terms of the Cabibbo angle for the case of inverted mass hierarchy for neutrinos. We also indicate how these ideas can be implemented in an $E_6$ inspired trinification $SU(3)_C \times SU(3)_L \times SU(3)_R$ model, which i…
We compute the effect of non diagonal neutrino mass in l_i -> l_j gamma in SUSY theories with non trivial Quark-Lepton complementarity and a flavor symmetry. The correlation matrix V_M=U_{CKM}U_{PMNS} is such that its (1,3) entry, as preferred by the present experimental data, is zero. We do not assume that $V_M$ is bimaximal. Quark-Lepton complementarity and the flavor symmetry strongly constrain the theory and we obtain a clear prediction for the contribution to mu -> e gamma and the tau decays tau -> e gamma and tau -> mu gamma. If the Dirac neutrino Yukawa couplings are degenerate but the …
Motivated by the success of A_4 in explaining neutrino tribimaximal mixing, and its approximate residual Z_3 symmetry in the quark and charged-lepton sectors, the notion of "flavor triality" is proposed. Under this hypothesis, certain processes such as tau+ to mu+mu+e- and tau+ to e+e+mu- are favored, but tau+ to mu+e+e- and mu+ to e+e+e- are disfavored. Similarly, B0 to tau+e- is favored, but B0 to tau-e+ is disfavored.
A basis independent formulation of quark-lepton complementarity is implemented at a high scale for quasidegenerate Majorana neutrinos. It is shown that even with the renormalization group evolution in the minimal supersymmetric standard model, the scenario can be consistent with the data provided a nontrivial role is played by the Majorana phases. Correlated constraints are found on these phases and the neutrino mass scale using the current data. We also indicate how future accurate measurements of the mixing angles can serve as tests of this scenario and restrict the values of the Majorana ph…
